The family Whip are no longer....one by one over time..they starved and died.
It wasn't until I was taking photos of the last three, that sthn notice something strange...something I have never seen before but she had.

I don't think so...their bellies have sunken and haven't been interested in food for awhile.
How ever..I will have to treat my six foot for worms as the whips have been in there since set up.

Hey Mars... got some info for you on Camallanus Worms.

Quote:

Camallus sp. are nematodes (roundworms) that can produce cysts but more commonly are noticed as a red worm that protrudes from the fishes' anus.  The life-cycle usually involves an aquatic insect secondary host and in an aquarium environment, the infection may be self limiting unless a lot of live insects are being fed.

There are several really nasty parasites that use snails as an intermediate host. Worms for one.

When you next get a dead guppy, try putting it in a jar or container of water for 24-36 hours or so.

See if little red or white stringy things come out of the rear vent. If they do, then you have camallanus worms. It would certainly explain the one-a-day deaths if so.

Getting rid of the worms is a real pain.

Beware.. these worms dig into the intestines. When they're killed, they detach and it can cause internal bleeding. In badly infested cases, the fish then get bacterial infections and die anyway. Or the worms can get tangled up when they die and get stuck in the intestine and block it, and start rotting inside. In other words, treating badly infested fish can kill them anyway. But if you know you have the worms, it is the only way to break the cycle.

Treatment

Levamisole is a worm treatment for nematodal parasites, camallanus and capillaria.

You need to make sure you get the pure stuff, usually sold as Pig and Poultry wormer. The dose rate is 1 ml per 7 lts. aquarium water. Or buy a worm treatment from your aquarium store containing levamisole.

Levamisole is available as 'Big L' pig & poultry wormer from the produce store. Less than $20 for 500ml. There are other brands apart from Big L but that's the one I've used.

Clears up intestinal nematodes including camallanus.  Levamisole will not affect any bacteria, including that in your filter. It is very specific to nematodes.

Dosage is 1 ml per 7 litres. Vaccuum the tank & do a water change after the treatment about 24-48 hours later.  Redose the tank after 2-3 weeks if necessary.

Ok... all the above information is snippets from other peoples experiences from other forums, so it's only a base guide and not pure fact. However, I followed their advice when I noticed Camillanus Worms in some of my fish and it worked with no harm to any of the fish or the filter.

Mars, I'll send you some of that Medication this week :yes :thumb

sorry to hear about ur losses Mars :(

this is a sticky i have on another site of what i do for my discus etc...

as for the meds, to be honest i'm not too confident using meds cause of a bad experience i had with worming discus a fair while ago now :( but have treated a few things now with good results so getting some confidence back now. i think it's a good thing not to be over confident though

the problem i had a while ago was i wanted to treat my discus with Levamisole and this is also found in pig and poultry wormers so i went out and got some poultry wormer, the product was called "worm enda poultry worma" but what i didnt know it has glucose in it also as it's not mentioned on the bottle. to cut a long story short i treated in the morning and came home from work to all my fish at the surface and gasping for air and had already lost a cpl of discus and other fish, it was a horrible site to come home too :(
luckily i had another tank setup so put the remanding fish in that and they were ok once in oxygenated water again.

since then iv'e been put onto "Big L pig and poultry wormer" which has no other additives and works great for getting rid of nematodal parasites, camallanus and capillaria.

the treatment i gave the above fish was :
a 3 day course of waterlife octozin as per directions on the bottle, 1 tablet per 22.5ltrs on days 1,2,3. "no water change in between" at the end of the treatment did a 30% water change. then 30% water changes every 2 days.

then a week later i did a 30% water change b4 treating with aquamaster fluke and tapeworm tablets 1 tablet per 20ltrs of water for 48hrs then did a 30% water change.

then left it week later i did a 30% water change b4 treating with aquamaster fluke and tapeworm tablets 1 tablet per 20ltrs of water for 48hrs then did a 30% water change.

then cleaned my filter and did a good clean of the tank.

left it another week "doing 30% water changes every 2 days"
then treated with Big L pig and Poutry wormer 14g/L @ 1ml per 7ltrs of water and did a 30% water change 24hrs after the dose.

left it another week and did a follow up treatment of Big L same as above

then cleaned filter again and thorough tank clean to get rid of any nasties.

been doing water changes every 2 days since and feeding at least 3 times a day to get some food back into the fish...

sorry for the long post, but hope this helps.
cheers
Rob...
