Hi all, I have two plecos. I think they are bristle nose catfish females. Anyway, normally they are both extremely busy day and night, however one of mine has been in the same spot for at least 24 hours. It has attached itself in a semi upside down position to a decorative urn, and hasn't budged. I can see it's mouth moving a little. I'm not sure if this fish is sick, or if this is something they occasionally do. I have had these fish for around 3 weeks, and it's the first time one has stopped moving. Does anyone know what could be going on? |

Just to rule out water problems, what are your stats, pH, Temp, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate? Mine sit in one spot for ages so at first thought it doesn't sound like a problem, but since you said they are normally very active there might be something amiss. Have you aded any new fish or tank decorations recently? I would try feeding them their favorite food and see if they come out and eat. Maybe it has taken them a while to decide who gets which hiding spot and now that it is sorted they will sit still a bit more. Anyone else have ideas? Dylan |

sounds like your on it dylema. I also would check water conditions first off, make sure she doesnt have any white patches on her or anything out of the ordinary. But you will find occasionaly bristlenose will hide away for quite some time and come out at night when your not watching  |

I don't have a master water test kit. They are so expensive. The pH is a bit below 7. The only thing I have added recently is 3 live plants. My pleco has just moved to spend it's time on a big leaf on one of the new plants. The other pleco is as busy as ever. |

Test kits aren't *that* expensive though - you get hundreds of tests out of 'em, and they save you from killing as many fish... but if a test kit is out of your budget, then take a water sample to an LFS that can test it for you - that way you can find out if you have a biological filter crash before all the fish die, if your nitrates are off the chart, if you're having PH swings due to soft water, etc... and while many of us can guess, and often identify what may be wrong with fish, the *first* thing everyone checks is water stats, because they're so vital... if you went to a doctor with a persistant cough, you'd want him to listen to your chest and look at your throat, first... not send you off for a cat scan, and a quick psychiatric visit to see if it's psychosomatic, and some xrays of your leg in case it's an african river worm, and check for any brain tumours that may make you cough - the most common thing to look at would be chest and throat - the most common issue for fish is... water... |

Also, considering what people pay to buy fish, when you're putting the money aside for a master test kit just think of it in the terms ... well if I had to replace my fish this is what it would cost... An Aquarium Pharmecuticals Freshwater Master Test Kit costs around $35-$40 plus P&H from online fish shops. I can PM you the web addresses of a few of them if you'd like. Believe me... I brought mine online for that price which was a considerable saving compared to $80 at my local fish shops. Once I saw how much cheaper I could get it for online I snapped one up quick smart... |

Give him a gentle prod & see if he moves. Don't bother him too much but i would just touch him to see if he's ok. |
