I recently discovered these devices called egg tumblers. Those of you breeding Cichlids probably know all about them. They basically provide a safe place for eggs while allowing water to be constantly pulled up through the eggs helping to prevent fungus etc. I had some BN eggs kicked out the other day and I thought I would have a go at making one. I put 5 eggs in my first DIY egg tumbler made from a piece of 25mm clear pvc hose with a 45 degree 15mm pvc pipe with an air stone for water uplift. The biggest problem with it is the clear pvc got a white slimy coating on it after being left in the water for a couple of days so I couldn't see the fry. Today I found a piece of clear acrylic pipe from a cheap sponge filter and I used that along with some plastic mesh top and bottom and the same 45 degree bend to make a better tumbler. This one is small so it's only good of a few eggs but looks way better. I have found plans for an even better one with a sponge filter incorperated so they get cleaner water but I am yet to buy the parts for that.![]() ![]() BTW the fry are just about ready to come out since they are pretty much finished their yolks. I let the fry out last night. They seemed to be strong swimmer the way they swam out able to change directions and all. I don't know if going from egg to fry in the current helps with this. I am just waiting for the rest to come out of the cave which is now in a 30cm tank linked to the 2' by a small pump and syphon tube making a really nice fry saver. I will post an update in my albino thread in catfish soon. Dylan |

and another Egg tumbler design. I think I will use this one next if I can find the carbon cartidge thing. Otherwise I will modify the plan. I found a fair bit of crap was getting sucked through mine so the sponge would be a welcome addition. Dylan |
