I was in a popular LFS today and saw a little Kuli munching and cruzing around on the gravel. I was really taken by the way it seemed to slither over the gravel like a snake. I am wondering what they are like in a community aquarium? also do they eat snails like some other loaches? I think they get pretty big right? I don't know if it would be an issue keeping them with bristlenoses or not either. Any info would be apreciated. Dylan |

I've got striped Kuhli loaches & the "black" kuhli loaches in two of my tanks which also contain cory's, yoyo's, bn's as well as various other fish... I don't have a problem with any of them mixing together... Infact, I love mine. And will probably get more as they do alot better in larger groups. They don't get large at all... about 7-10cm long... Care: All kuhlis need well-established aquaria and should not be considered for newly set up tanks. Lots of hiding places with soft substrate. Best kept in groups, the larger the better. Three fish is the absolute minimum that should be kept together. Feeding: Easily fed. Accepts good quality flake, sinking pellets, thawed frozen bloodworm, Mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, etc. Water parameters: pH: 6.2-6.8. Hardness: Medium Soft to Medium. Max dh: 10 Temperature: 78 - 82ºF (25.5 - 28ºC) Black Kuhli Loach (note: Black kuhli's look more brown than actual black)Striped Kuhli Loach ![]() |

I've seen Kuhli's kept in tanks with 3-6mm gravel and they seem to burrow into it quite well... rather annoying when they need to be caught ;) |

Yup... mine have burrowed into the gravel before and they never seemed to have a problem with having a gravel substrate rather than sand... although, I have begun to change one of my tanks over to sand and will eventually change all of them from gravel to sand. And yes... as stated above... kuhli's are one of the ultimate escape artists when it comes time to being caught... they are fast, slippery and amazingly good at disappearing in the blink of an eye  But ya just gotta love'em

I have two striped kuhli's that came as freebies with a livefish order - I see them a couple of times a week (they're in the work tank) mostly around feeding time... they get along fine with the guppies, cories, BN & Gastromyzon - I haven't seen 'em eat any snails, and I wish they would - *someone* cleaned up a big ramshorn though, 'cos I found it's shell empty today... |

Scientific Name: Pangio alternans (Kottelat & Lim, 1993) Common name: Kuhli Loach Synonyms: None Distribution: Mahakam basin, Kalimantan Timur, Borneo, Indonesia Sexual Dimorphism: Females noticeably plumper when loaded with eggs like other Pangio species. Maximum size: 3 inches Similar to: Might be confused with other striped kuhlis, except for lateral dappling. Max dh: 10 Temperature: 78 - 82ºF (25.5 - 28ºC) Breeding: Has not been bred in aquaria. Little is known about this species normal habitat. The original specimens described by Kottelat & Lim were discovered in blackwater conditions in a fast-flowing tributary stream under forest cover. It was not known if the speed of the water was seasonal or just caused by a lowering of water level in the main Mahakam River. The fish were found in leaf litter at the sides of the stream. http://www.loaches.com/species-index/pangio-alternans

Thanks guys. Now I just have to find the space for them I think. If I can set up my new tank I will have plenty of room. |
