Hi pplz, I have finally given in and decided to get some bristlenoses  But i have a few q's before i get them. How long do they take to grow from 2-3cm to full grown? Do they have a particular plant they like? The ones i have seen and are on hold at the moment are black with white/cream spots. What type is this? i asked the store person and thy said they were "pepper" Is $8 each the normal price? for 2-3cm long Do they do better in pairs or singley? Do they like other fish in the tank, or will they be ok by themselves? How long should the tank be up and running before i can put them in? Do they require any particular care? I have a filter/pump and a heater, lots of hiding places. Anything else? P.s. sorry i havn't been on in a while, i have moved and no longer have broadband and lately i have been focusing on my schoolwork (gotta pass

Breeding wise 1m - 2 or 3 females work well. They can be kept singularly in community tanks. growth rate and maturity depends on the type of b-nose, $8 for peppermints at any size is a bargain if they are peppers. The tamk should be well cycled before adding, any b-nose under 3.5cm needs to be aclimatised slowly IE: they do not travel or transfer as well, as the larger sizes. PH needs to be 6.5 to 7.2 all depends on who has bred them. |

Hi, You will never look back after buying BN. For normal Bn in my experience they will be getting mature (but not fully grown) in 6-9 months from 3cm. They eat all sorts of vegies and can't live on algae in the tank alone. They will be happy with most mild mannered fish. I have tetras in with mine and they don't notice each other. If you end up with two males they may fight for dominance but otherwise a group is fine, in saying that a single fish seems fine by itself as well. I like to watch them interact with one another so for me a few is better than one. some of mine like sitting on anubias leaves but also like being in amoungst java fern. They really like hiding under driftwood. Here is a picture of one of my small peppermints ![]() And a picrture of a common one. ![]() and ![]() and ![]() the normal ones can vary quite a bit in colour from light grey with white spots to dark brown with cream to yellow spots depending on substrate and happyness of the fish. If they are peppermints for $8 can you tell me where they are. good luck. Dylan |

Yeah, I'd join the queue for $8 Peppermints, although I'd need another tank for 'em... I'd think they were confused with Peppered Cories? I've had that at two LFS's, but both times they've realised before selling the fish...

Bargain if its a peppermint, not so if its a peppered cory, unless its a full grown adult I know of a shop that sells albino's very cheap but they breed their own, some have have bent spines, i dont know who it is though. So it wouldnt surprise me that a shop that breeds their own peppermints may undersell as well. everytime i get a colony together to breed them i get talked into selling them

Sorry about the long delay pplz i've been (still am)snowed under with school work, and to top it all off last thursday i was assulted on the train by a drunk angry teenage girl. my black eyes are still healing........... Sorry to hear about your run in with that girl! Sounds nasty. How big is your tank? The BN grows to something like 15cm, so if that's going to be too big, I would go for a smaller catfish. I had two common BN catfish, and ended up having to give them away because they turned my plants into swiss cheese. The LFSs tell me that this is unusual though, so maybe mine were particularly hungry. I did feed them algae wafers, but they never stopped eating plants. Their favourite plant was Hygrophillia. They did stay clear of the Wisteria. I have another plant that they loved. It is sold in little ceramic pots and has broad leaves. Good luck. |
