I'm thinking of getting one or a few Kuhli Loaches. I have small gravel in my tank, would that be o.k or do they need something really fine? Also, do you tend to see them once you get them home? I've read that if you have a few, they are more likely to be swimming about, but that's coming from a shop that sells them. Wondering if it's true in reality? Are they compatible with my other fish (see signature). Thanks! |

Yup, i've got Kuhli's in two of my tanks... both the black type & the banded type.. I lov'em to bits... They should be compatible with the fish that you have got, I can't see any problems there. They do tend to hide, I know mine do but I do see them dart out at feeding time and there is one or two of them that like to "hide" in spots that are actually quite visable   The more you have the better, I know i'll get some more eventually. As for gravel, it doesn't really matter what you have got... yes they do prefer sand, but it is not necessary. I've got largeish gravel in my 250L and they are fine with that. They can even burrow under the largish gravel if they have a mind to, I know mine did. There is another thread somewhere on here about Kuhli's... I'll see if I can find it for you. |

thanks sthn! They sound great. I reckon I'll get some. That's funny about them hiding where you can see them. I'm going to read that thread. |

They will be happy with the current in my tank. I have a 1100 Litre per hour filter in a 100 litre tank  . My Clown Loaches were playing in the current together today, it was so cute. |

sthn thanks so much for the info on chain loaches and corys. I went to Aggies today, but I have to admit, I ended up buying something else . The chain loaches were a bit pricey if I was to buy a whole bunch as recommended. The Julli Corydoras looked good, but I ended up really liking the Yoyo Loaches. In hindsight I should have probably got bigger ones, as I think the littlies I bought are a bit daunted by the other fish. They didn't eat the blood worms for tea tonight, but hopefully they will be settled in and eat some brine shrimp tomorrow. Thanks for all of the great info. I may well get some Julli Corydoras when I get my bigger tank :).

I brought 3 chain loaches at Aggies when I was in Adelaide a few weekends ago, but I intend to buy some more the next time I am up that way. My 3 are doing fine in just a shoal of 3 but I think about 6 would really bring out their characteristics. Kuhli Loches which I think are better in groups of about 8-10 are generally cheap enough.. I think I paid about $5-6 each for mine in Adelaide in April (can't remember exactly & I've misplace the book I wrote it down in). Admittedly... I have split my 10 up into 6 in one tank & 4 in another, but once again I will buy more in the future to try to bring out their true characteristics more. Yoyo's are good and they do grow reasonably quickly... I've got 4 yoyo's in my 250L and they love to hide in all the little hidey holes. They do come out when they "think" no-one is looking. Actually, earlier I was playing "Peek-a-boo" with one of my yoyo's.. he came out of his hiding spot.. saw me and darted back in again... then 10 seconds later ... stuck his head out and looked right at me... I said "boo" and he disappeared back into his hole.. 10 seconds later he came back out again, all the way this time, sat on the rock & looked at me..... I said "boo" and he turned & dived back into his hole again... This went on for a minute or two... it was so comical...  |

 How cute Sthn. Yeah, I'll get some chain loaches one day. I didn't really want to spend that much today, but they are on my wish list. I'm happy with my Yoyos for now. They are such cuties. |

![]() Scientific Name: Pangio alternans (Kottelat & Lim, 1993) Common name: Kuhli Loach Synonyms: None Distribution: Mahakam basin, Kalimantan Timur, Borneo, Indonesia Sexual Dimorphism: Females noticeably plumper when loaded with eggs like other Pangio species. Maximum size: 3 inches Similar to: Might be confused with other striped kuhlis, except for lateral dappling. Care: All kuhlis need well-established aquaria and should not be considered for newly set up tanks. Lots of hiding places with soft substrate. Best kept in groups, the larger the better. Three fish is the absolute minimum that should be kept together. Feeding: Easily fed. Accepts good quality flake, sinking pellets, thawed frozen bloodworm, Mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, etc. Water parameters: pH: 6.2-6.8. Hardness: Medium Soft to Medium. Max dh: 10 Temperature: 78 - 82ºF (25.5 - 28ºC) Breeding: Has not been bred in aquaria. Little is known about this species normal habitat. The original specimens described by Kottelat & Lim were discovered in blackwater conditions in a fast-flowing tributary stream under forest cover. It was not known if the speed of the water was seasonal or just caused by a lowering of water level in the main Mahakam River. The fish were found in leaf litter at the sides of the stream. ![]() Notes Like all Kuhlis, this species loves planted aquaria with plenty of cover and ideally with some loose leaf litter. In nature, they habitually grub around for food particles in such areas. Kuhlis are great at getting into awkward places. Undergravel filters are less in vogue these days, but aquarists occasionally stripped down tanks that they had previously kept kuhlis in only to find a population that had obviously bred in the tank hidden beneath the undergravel plate. http://www.loaches.com/species-index/pangio-alternans |

Wow those Kuhlis look nice when they're fully grown. I like how long they get. From what I hear you don't get to see them much though. |

I believe that the amount of time they spend hiding to the amount of time they spend out scouraging about & playing depends on a few things: 1) How many of them you have got? The more there are of them the more likely you are to see them out & about. 2) How much current you have got in the tank? If you have a fair amount of current I think they come out more to play in it. 3) How bright your lights are? I don't think they like really bright light. I could be wrong, but that's just been my experience with mine.. I still think they are worth having though..

The ones at the LFSs are usually hiding, but maybe that's because the lights are bright and there's probably not a lot of current. They are definitely on my list. Might have to wait until I have more room (bigger tank) though, I think my tank is full. |
