I just received an email on the new issue of Practical Fishkeeping Magazine... & one of THE main stories was that a British Fishkeeper has managed to get his Clown Loaches to spawn & has photographic evidence of it...

Article here ... http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/pfk/...m.php?news=1429

Quite an interesting read :yes

However.... I've just got a few questions... :unsure2: :unsure2:

We've all be told about how the different water conditions in different tanks can negatively affect fish when being transfered (ie. from shop to home).

However in the article above...

1) The main tank which the Clown Loaches were in had a Ph of 4.5, Temp of 27-28, High Nitrates.

2) The tank he transferred them to had a Ph of 7.2, Temp of 20C & nitrates approx 10ppm

3) The Ph of the new tanks was reduced (seemingly quite quickly) from 7.2 down to 4.5 & then 4.1.

Now.. to me those seem like HUGE differences in water conditions... and i'm sure that if some newby fishkeeper had fish die from transferring fish from one tank to another tank with those readings between tanks... wouldn't we blame the difference in water conditions for the fishes deaths :confused :confused

Then again... maybe the differences in water conditions was what caused the spawn to be infertile :unsure2:

Anyone else got any thoughts on it :unsure2:

i had clown loaches in water that was neutral, then to water that was 8.5+.. they were fine. dont clown loaches have the same body surface as discuses? the lower the ph, the higher immunity to disease (because of the acidic water quality). wouldnt that trigger sum kind of spawning mechanism in them? im not sure.. very interesting tho :thumb
