I'm starting to get a bit of algae in my new tank, so I think I can get a catfish now. My previous BN ate my plants like you wouldn't believe, but I'm told that's not normally the case. Anyway, these are the ones that are compatible with goldies: BN catfish Rubbernose pleco Which one would you get? Apparently there are a couple of loaches which are compatible too. Which one is the best? Hillstream Loach Dojo Loach I'm not sure what the availability is with these fish, other than the BN which are very common. If anyone has any suggestions, that would be brilliant :). |

Hillstreams are also known as borneo suckers... they have done a good job for me, but won't take any artificial food at all, including algae wafers and pure spirulina... they just don't go for it - but then I haven't had one starve, either... Common BN's are the cheapest option - Albino's tend to (in my experience) come out more and are more visible, sociable fish... I think the Hillstream will do a better job than the Dojo... but the BN is probably a better investment - it can eat more algae, will happily eat vegies and wafers, and will grow to a nice size to go with the goldies... the loach will stay much the same size as you put him in the tank at... something to remember when you buy 'em - they don't grow much in captivity... Hillstreams like the water cooler than BN's can handle happily... just a thought going in with Goldies... Cheers, Stuar |

Thanks for the info Stuart. I think I might have to get the BN for the clean up, and I have to admit, this website makes the Dojo Loaches sound like a lot of fun: http://animal-world.com/encyclo/fresh/loaches/DojoLoach.php If you scroll down, a lot of people have said really good things about them as pets. The Hillstream Loaches look a bit scary :). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Beaufor...eichowensis.jpg It's one of those fish that you'd need to see in person. You can't appreciate them on photos. I'm going to give Aggies a call on Fri or Sat and see what they have. |

Aggies have 'em as Borneo Suckers, although I may have grabbed the last one in stock a couple of weeks ago - they seem to come and go from the suppliers in waves... I got a beautiful big one, too...

Oh did you now Stuart, thanks for letting me know :). Actually it occured to me this am that I need to get decent size tank mates for these goldies, as the goldies are big and have very large mouths. The poor apple snail gets harrassed a bit by Peaches, so it's Peaches that I'm worried about with tank mates. Anything else would be able to get away faster than the snail though. |
