Thought I'd start a thread on Peppermint Bristlenose Catfish, seeing as how they're the topic of conversation at the moment

This is a pic of one of mine which I got in August, pic was taken last night.

And another pic with a couple of it's tank mates.. a yoyo & an Orange Spot Bn.

All of my peppermint bn's are in community tanks with a wide range of community tropical fish... So far I haven't experienced any problems with them being in community tanks & don't expect to. Although one is currently sharing it's cave with Kuhli loaches and eventually when it's old enough to breed, the kuhli's might not be to happy about being kicked out (if the pepp bn chooses to breed in that particular cave)

Thanks for telling us about your Peppermint Bristlenose Catfish Sthn. I'm pretty jelous. My catfish is a bit on the ugly side, not pretty like yours, but I just love to watch my catfish. The first thing I do when I go to the tank is see what Bertha's up to. Catfish are great, and Peppermints are the nicest looking ones I've seen.

Some Info...

Scientific Name: Ancistrus dolichopterus Pronounced: anne-SISS-truss doll-ee-cop-TERR-uss

Adult size: in the aquarium.... can reach around 10 centimetres ..... in the wild...can reach up to 15 centimetres

Sexing: Males develop bristles on their nose and around the mouth. Females either have no bristles, or they are not as well developed as those of the male. Males also develop short erectile cheek spines (interopercular spines) near the base of the pectoral fin spine.

Diet: Vegetarian/Omnivore
In the aquarium....they are mostly vegetarian. Algae is an important part of their food supply, but it needs to be supplemented. They should be fed vegetable pellets, tablets (below) and flake, as well as fresh vegetable matter such as zucchini or lettuce - some will also eat slightly softened pumpkin. They will also eat frozen foods such as bloodworm or community dinner. Driftwood is also an integral part of their diet & should be included in their tanks.

Swimming level: They inhabit the bottom level of the tank.

Recommended for: large tropical tanks; cichlid tanks; beginners to experienced fishkeepers.

Physical description:

# The Bristlenose Catfish is an armoured catfish belonging to the family Loricariidae.
# Its body (except for the belly area) is covered with large bony plates not scales.
# They have a large broad, flat head and a flattened ventral profile.
# Many fleshy "bristles" grow on the upper surface of the head, around the mouth and nose. These tentacles can become branched like antlers in older males.
# The mouth is located on the underside of the head and is shaped like a suction cup.
# The colour is black with white spots and depends on the individual fish, age of the fish, the area that the individual is found and the food they eat.
# They take on a mottled appearance with patches of paler colour when resting or stressed.
# The body is marked by white coloured spots.
# The fins have a striped pattern.
# All fins have a thickened first ray with many small barbed hooks.

Tempermant: Generally peaceful & get along with a wide range of fish. Can tend to be more shyer & timid than other bristlenose catfish.

I haven't seen the Zebra ones. They sound really nice. Thanks for that info. My BN is really shy, but I'm hoping she becomes more comfortable in the tank as she settles in. I didn't get two, because they were both females, and my previous BNs didn't seem to be fond of each other at all. Other than that, it would have been $60 for the two which was a lot. I hope I did the right thing. I wonder if she'd like to hang out with a Peppermint BN.

Good info Sthn :thumb . Can I ask though if you could publish the source of the info? I have to make a note on the adult length also and say that many people appear to have large specimens of 12+cm and I know Discus_lover and his friend have had some around 15+cm in breeding aquaria.

Don't get your hopes up about the zebras because, a) they are illegal in SA (maybe in all of Australia), B ) they are a little hard to come by, and c) the price is up there with crazy (the last lot I saw for sale were around $600-700 for 3-4cm). Nice fish though. Also check out L134 lepard frog pleco  they are also illegal but with a price tag of $250 for a 3cm specimen it is only really expensive not crazy.

Thanks Dylema.. :thumb

I got most of the information from: http://www.wetpetz.com/bristlenose.htm

Some of the rest was just bits n piece found on various bn pages that had a bit of info. Some of it came from my own experience with them so far.

As for the size they probably can grow upto 15cm no matter where they are ... in a tank or in their natural habitat... (should probably add their natural habitat to the list of info hey  :yes )

Branjie... Dylema is right when he says that the Zebra pleco is illegal here in Sth Aust :cry2 :cry2 Don't have any idea why though :dntknw :dntknw And they are very very very expensive... near a grand :o

I wouldn't add a pepp bn to your tank just yet. It's still new & pepp bn's can be quite sensitive sometimes. People are always breeding them now so there will be plenty around later on down the track when your tank has been established for longer.

Zebra pleco are nice and although there is a small number in SA u wont normally see them in shops here, hopefully with the new law changes (*rumour only* supposedly enforced next year) the last one i heard of that was in a shop was confiscated nearly 12 months ago by fisheries. :o
