The problem we have in SA is that we have 3 list of fish that we are allowed to keep plus a noxious list.

The other states only have a noxious list, which hopefully when the new laws come into affect (eventually *rumour for late next year*) we will be the same

The allowable list was formed nearly 20 years ago, which meant a lot of fish that were not in Australia at the time are not on the list.

Also in the last 5 years a lot of black market (smuggling) has been going on and quite a few new species of fish has started showing up.

Hopefully the new laws will slow that side of the industry down, before that section destroys the industry all together.

Not a fan of the smugglers as a $30 - $150 fish retail if imported legally finishes up selling for $130 - $5000 or more.

Occasionally you get friends off the smugglers selling them on other forums cheaper than the eastern shops to get rid of the excess quickly.

These fish have had no proper quarentine proceedures and quite often carry parasites and other problems. Which is why it is a concern to the industry, all we need is an aquarium strain disease to hit the waterways and the restrictions will become unbearable i would imagine. As the govt. dept. are only interested in Aquaculture not the hobby industry..

Getting off topic now :hysterical
