I have got 5 (I think) yoyo loaches... and I've just noticed that one of them seems to have an awfully "fat" belly.... started me thinking that it could possibly be 'pregnant'. So... I let my fingers do the walking ... on my keyboard... Found out that yoyo's are not known to breed in aquariums although adult females will occasionally fill with eggs. So I guess that's what mine has done. I wonder why they fill with eggs but yet don't actually breed I will try to take some pics of her & post them if I can |

Looks like carrying eggs the female in our display tank looked the same for a few weeks before absorbing or dispelling the eggs. Some fish that are seasonal breeders in the wild are the hardest to replicate their breeding habits in aquaria, some fish breed after monsoonal rain season (Botia) which means they need the heavy down pour and flooding to trigger breeding. Other species would be the oposite where they need a drought situation then flooding to trigger egg development. |

I guess there could be a natural cycle which part of it is creating eggs. It may be in the trigger for breeding that the problem arrises in aquaria like Aggies said. I guess (just looking at it scientifically) Most women will still have a menstrual cycle and ovulate even if they don't intend to become pregnant (I say most as there are oviously medical conditions etc that stop menstruation). So the fish may be similar in that respect. Dylan |

Thanks Aggies & Dylema I think she's abit hormonal aswell.... She is the only one in the tank who's currently chasing every other yoyo loach around the tank, she'll even go into their hiding places & chase them out of there. And if another fish gets in her way... she gives them a chase too.In fact... she's doing more chasing than the danio's in the tank   |

So, at some time I guess I can expect mine to do the same. And I guess the eggs will all get eaten... especially by all the other fish in the tank. |

Yeah... that's what I first thought too Fishr That she was being a little miss piggy, but something about the shape of her belly just didn't seem right & it started to occur to me that maybe she had eggs.

I'm sure her tank mates will enjoy her offerings. She may settle once she's offloaded the eggs. If she doesn't then maybe she will need to be moved into a tank on her own with space to feel comfortable enough to ' let loose'...

Naaahh!! I figure her chasing gives the other fish their daily exercise   Actually... last night while watching her... I saw her pretty much bowl one of the albino bn's off of a rock, not on purpose though & I don't think the albino bn really took alot of notice of it... cause it just continued on sucking away as if nothing had even happened  But I will keep an eye on them all though
