This may help until I find more.... Breeding takes place in hollows, caves and mud holes in banks. Females lay the eggs and the males guard them until they hatch and whilst the fry are absorbing the egg sac. the male bristlenose may guard several clutches of eggs simultaneously and it has been suggested that the tentacles may act as a fry mimic to attract females or may exude a substance that supplements the frys diet. The name ancistrus derives from the Greek 'agkistron' meaning hook - a refernence to the form of the cheek odontodes. The genera Pristiancistrus, Thysanocara and Xenocara are now synonyms of Ancistrus. Size is up to 15 cm (male), 12 cm (female), recommended temperature 23-27 degrees Celsius, lifespan up to 12 years. Feeding is easy, bristlenoses will graze on algae and other surface growing organisms as well as eating algae wafers or tablets, flake food, squash, spinach, cucumber, zucchini, green beans and peas. Sexing is very easy as the female will occasionally have bristles around the edge of the chin and the male will have them up the center of the head Breeding is also possible: Males attract female to small cave or hollow, then guard eggs after fertilization through hatching (4-8 days) until fry are free swimming (4-6 days after hatching), the aquarist need only supply a suitable cave, food, and one of each sex. Like other plecs benefit from the addition of bogwood, which they will rasp at and use as a hiding place - in the absence of other plant matter (sources of fibre) wood may be essential to the survival of these fish in the aquarium when fed on typical high protein fish food. |

Breeding.... * The Bristlenose Catfish is one of the more easily bred Loricarids. * They form pairs and are a secretive substrate spawner. Often the only sign they have bred is when the male disappears. * The eggs are laid in clusters usually in cave, either under driftwood or a rock or in an overturned flowerpot. If the size of the space isn't right, the fish will enlarged it by rasping. * The female may lay up to 120 amber coloured eggs. * The male guards the eggs and fans the water around the eggs to keep them oxygenated - right: male just outside his nest. * The fry hatch in around five days and attach themselves to tank walls. * They retain the yolk sac for two weeks after hatching and then they can be fed on crushed vegetable flake. Lettuce leaves also make good fry food, but remove it if they don't eat it quickly as it will pollute the water. * The fry should be removed, if other fish (besides the parents), are present in the tank. * Use water with the following parameters: # pH 6.5 to 7.0 # hardness between 5-12 dH. |

The biggest tip I could give you is buy some of the ceramic breeding caves. I have some of them and I also have drift wood for them to hide under but they always go for the cave. I also have a stong current in the tank. My albino boy goes for a cave right in the jet stream from my FX5 filter. I think sometimes the first spawn takes a bit of work to trigger then after that is is easier. Dylan |

Here is a photo of a cave used for reptiles. Myself and other forum members have used these with success....Aggies sell them I think..if not I'm sure the can order the for you.![]() Exo Terra Reptile Den Large The Reptile Den allows easy observation of reptiles and amphibians while in their hiding and sleeping spot without opening the terrarium and disturbing the animals. ! # Unique "through-the-glass" magnetic rock formation # Allows monitoring without disturbing the animals # Insulated to create a colder burrow (Like in nature!) # Perfect nesting site for various species # Eliminates stress while observing Digging out animals by removing the substrate and terrarium decorations is an underestimated stress factor that now is completely elimated. The rock-cover can be removed from outside the tank to observe the hiding and sleeping animals and placed back on the glass. The two pieces are kept together through the glass by strong magnets. The BNs loved it..other fish liked to rest on it. ![]() You can see the rock at the back of my tank. ![]() A forum members photo..he uses the rock with great success.
