I can think of three ways a catfish could lose an eye.

Catfish have the ability to dissolve oxygen through there stomach wall and sometimes shoot to the surface to take a gulp of air. They swim so fast that they often come out of the water and hit the lids. This may just be a freak accident and the fish has hit the edge of the glass or plastic strip that holds your lids up. The eye will probably fall off and I would put some fungus and fin rot medication in the water to stop the eye socket from becoming infected and some melafix to help the wound heal.

The second option is one of the other fish has attacked him and pulled the eye out. Not much you can do to avoid this but the treatment is the same as above.

The last option is a bacterial or parasite infection. The eye socket has become inflamed and the eye has popped out. If you catch the problem before the eye actually pops you can save the fish’s eye but in most cases where the optical nerve has been stretched it is too late. You must be careful because most medications for parasites will also kill catfish. I would just use a little bit of salt, maybe a dose of fungus and fin rot medication and melafix to help the wound heal.

That being said...the fish should live a full and happy life once the wound has healed over.

It sounds like popeye which is generally caused by poor water quality. That's where I'd start by making sure the water parameters are all good.

Spot on - bad water quality (not saying yours definatly is bad), but high ammonia, nitrites and nitrates etc. not enough water changes cause bad water.

The bad water creates bad bacteria which can infect the fish.

In this case its eye, pop eye is a bacterial infection behind the eye.

As tildey has mentioned, check water parameters do some water changes and get a bacterial medication for his eye :thumb

In some cases sea-salt or rock salt will work. dosage depends on size of tank and type of fish you have.
