(OOC: This is an open thread. I will be RPing the NPC nation of Autoritär that my faction and primary race are currently at war with due to the fact that my species called the Khepri are incapable of communication to anyone's knowledge. You could sent in elements to weaken Autoritär for personal, economic or other reasons. You can send in reinforcements to save the capital city of one of the largest primarily Human kingdoms on the continent, the Khepri indiscriminately kill, destroy and devour everything living they come across including any type of civilian and wildlife. An operation to strike at the heart of the Khepri Hives will take place soon if you want to get in on it. It will involve the opportunity to deploy military assets, heroic individuals and one or more people of high psychic talent in an attempt to end the war.) (The Host's factbook and a map of the conflict http://s15.zetaboards.com/Alestrius/topic/8094745/1/#new) Current Status: The town of Valherm 10 kilometers south of Kynesburg has sounded it's great horn! The court mage's entourage and the Scholars Guild in Kynesburg have all failed to make lodestone contact and the signal fires have gone dark. Valherm and it's near 10 thousand inhabitants including combatants and civilians is now considered lost. The King has decreed that the gates be left on high alert until the midnight bell tolls, they will then be sealed and reinforced for the coming siege. Khepri numbers unknown, swarm suspected to be <10km from the capital. Kynesburg defenses stand ready. Reinforcement currently ongoing. Dwarf Clan Gurdan raises it's banner! High Elf House Irelian raises it's banner! Hierofane, seat of Odonia's central and greatest city, raises it's banner! The Sinswept Glaive Mercenary Battalion raises it's banner! The Autoritär Mechanized Golem Corps raise their banner. Port: Still open to allied vessels. Balloon towers: Still open to allied air ships. Hierofane arcane gate system: Operational. Main south gate: High alert. Western gate: Open for suppliers and refugees. Eastern gate: Sealed. The Great Harvest War. All right thinking and honorable peoples of this continent Odonia and the world of Alestrius are hereby called by the esteemed City State of Hierofane to send supplies of a medicinal, sustenance and military nature to the nation of Autoritär. Kynesburg, the capital city of Autoritär is at risk. The inhumane and destructive natural force collectively labeled as 'Khepri' by scholars in the field have yet to cease their attacks on the nation of Autoritär over the last few years. Eradication of the creatures has proven non-feasible and containment of them has slowly been failing across the length of what has been called The Great Harvest War. The Hierofane city council and the King and Mage's society in Kynesburg will both be providing logistical travel aid in the form of mass arcane portals to expedite the arrival of friendly forces to Kynesburg's defense. Plans are currently underway for an operation to potentially end the war, more information will be shared to interested parties upon reaching Kynesburg Castle Greymarch. Missive from the neutral city state of Hierofane to any and all interested parties. King Bjar Hydryn glared through the boarded up windows of Darksmoth Taven up past the towering cobblestone buildings and tiled roofs. Above the yellow merchant district hung giant arcane crystals surrounded by brass rings and bars, held aloft by the arcane processes being wrought by the dozens of magi lining the streets below each gravity defying gem. A sharp ring echoed through the air and the man felt it echo through the cast iron frame of the window despite the large nailed planks of wood covering it. A pinprick of blue light appeared perfectly between two of the giant gems in the air, enlarging and growing outward of a seemingly invisible wall. The blue sheen began to wane as the nose of a dwarven war zeppelin began to materialize, followed by the balloon and soon by the undercarriage, coated in iron plates and armed with cannons and hatches for bomb dropping. King Hydryn gave a anxious sigh as he saw the banners of Clan Gurdan hanging from the sides of the zeppelin. The Scholars Guild had insisted that Valherm would have at least a week before they would have to slash and burn, then evacuate the town. However the Khepri had somehow managed to wipe out all life in the town... his advisers had said there was hope for survivors and resistance within the town, however he was in no position to aid them. The Khepri had sped up there invasion once again, the last time they had urged the swarm forward was two years ago. When Autoritär lost it's line of forts defending the south. A faint rumble gently rocks the tavern. The King scowled and waved a hand for more wine. Several of the foreign generals and military strategists had told the king that the palace should be fortified without him in it. Over the last 4 months the Khepri had adapted once again, the feral bugs had begun sending in stealthy and "beady birds" (nicknamed because of the way they stand like flightless birds and you can only see their faint beady eyes staring at you before they leap) to eliminate town officials and other important leaders before the swarm had arrived. Kynesburg's defenses greatly outmatched that of any other Autoritär hold and the King had been confident not even a makeshift bug "assassin" could get at him. The assumed fall of Valherm had helped him change his mind. The entire horn blow hadn't been performed, which means the person sending the alarm may have been killed or the very horn tower may have been felled. Another rumble ebbs through the rock and earth. The king shook his head and stormed out into the cool darkening air. He took in the surroundings of the courtyard and raised a fist to a duo of golem knights surveying the streets. One of the two foot tall stone monstrosities raised it's shield arm in response, it's meister echoed "Autoritär siegreich!" through his lodestone. King Hydryn felt his courage returning as he continued to survey the capital as it rose high above his current position in the yellow merchant's court. The defense of Kynesburg would have the largest number of golem knights ever fielded. Considering the need to reserve infantry and keep them on the walls the abilities and surprising agility of the arcane forged golems would aid greatly in weakening the coming onslaught. Despite their effectiveness the Khepri were still yet to adapt a counter measure. Their anti air organisms aim too high for a jumping golem and their ground forces have trouble pinning them down. "We might stop them from even getting over the outer wall..." The King found himself clutching his talisman that hung from his neck, whispering a prayer to the God of Justice. WORK IN PROGRESS

Salicia tugged at the reigns of her horse, slowing its pace to allow the legion to begin to pull ahead of her. The regular soldiers marched in perfect formation, their armor and weapons shining in the morning sun. That shine worried her. The armor was not the dull sheen of steel or iron, but the more brilliant sheen of Paragon's Luster. The metal was expensive to work and hard to find (less so than the Silverite that formed her armor) and was only used by troops expecting to see truly hard fighting. The fact that her troops had been issued this equipment did not bode well. Still, it was not as though they would be hurting for soldiers. Two full legions were marching behind her, the Legion of Stone and her own Legion of Forest. The remaining legions had been moved to the eastern border, to protect against potential incursions. The Cantacles of Battlemages had granted her many retunes of their mages, enough that she was worried that there might not be enough to defend the Nation if these... insects turned their focus west. The Hermitages had declined to send more Spirit Mages to her forces, though she was glad. The Spirit Mages that were already attached to her Legion were excellent. She knew them, and they knew her and what they needed to do. Their job, after all, was far more complicated than that of the Battlemages. Throwing fire, lightning, and ice does not change. Barriers, healing, neutralization, those change. Temperature, strength, even the person themselves change the nature of the spell. Better to stay with those that know the people they're working with. A screech tore her out of her thoughts. She looked up, simultaneously pulling back on the reigns and bringing her mount to a halt. A Griffon, armored in the distinctive style of the Legion of Forest's calvary, landed and trotted over to her. The soldier placed his left fist over his heart, a traditional salute. Covered from head to toe to Paragon's Luster, it was impossible for Salicia to determine who it was. Normally, she would have asked the soldier to remove his helm to allow her to see his face, but if a rider had been dispatched time was surely not on their side. "Report. What is the situation?" Her voice was crisp and martial, but behind it was a certain eagerness to fight she found hard to suppress. "It is not good, ser." The voice was muffled, but it was easy to hear the distress in his voice. "The enemy is marching north at incredible speed. Outposts are being destroyed at a fairly alarming rate, and we have been unable to scout the enemy effectively. The parties I have sent have never returned." Salicia flinched. "I hope the retune that forged ahead has completed their work." The rider nodded. "Indeed, ser. The runes are laid, and they have begun drawing the ritual marks for Magi Bence's spell." She nodded, looking back to her soldiers and then returning her gaze to the rider. "Return, then. We will make all haste to join you." The rider saluted again before his griffon ran forward and jumped into the air, its wings beating and turning towards the capitol of Autoritär. Salicia raised her hand and signaled. A horn blew, and the army picked up its pace. |

Current Status: The town of Valherm 10 kilometers south of Kynesburg continues to fail to heed calls. The court mage's entourage and the Scholars Guild in Kynesburg have all failed to make lodestone contact and the signal fires are still out. Valherm and all assets contained are lost. The King is beginning to recall all forces currently south of the city in for a tighter line of defense to prepare for the inevitable assault. Khepri numbers unknown, swarm suspected to be <6km from the capital. A colossal wall of dust envelops the horizon south of Kynesburg. Kynesburg defenses stand ready. Reinforcement currently ongoing. Dwarf Clan Gurdan raises it's banner! High Elf House Irelian raises it's banner! Hierofane, seat of Odonia's central and greatest city, raises it's banner! The Sinswept Glaive Mercenary Battalion raises it's banner! The Autoritär Mechanized Golem Corps raise their banner. The Circle of Accudo marches for Kynesburg from the west. Port: Still open to allied vessels. Balloon towers: Still open to allied air ships. Hierofane arcane gate system: Operational. Main south gate: High alert. Western gate: Open for suppliers and refugees. Eastern gate: Sealed. Operation Autumn Shower status: Final preparations. "Operation Autumn Shower!" the gravely voice boomed from the balcony high above the Burgundy Court, Kynesburg's military marching theater and city center. Currently the space was occupied by thousands of high caliber units from across the continent, several crystal chimes also hung in the air around the side of the Kynesburg Military Academy that the speaker was using as their podium, these devices were transmitting the message to assets of Operation Autumn Shower that were already in transit to their relevant objectives, absent from the court for logistical reasons and to the leaders of nations that had donated assets to the mission. "This operation is named aptly, for today we are going to partake in the largest aerial deployment of military forces ever performed in the history of the world. As we speak, armies from House Irelian, Clan Gurdan and Hierofane are fighting battles on every single front of bug territory!" An illusion of a huge map appeared in the air above the court showing a line encircling the purple colored land associated with the living jungles and breathing spires of the enemy. Academics were still unable to come to an agreement as to why the insect-like race that lived within had begun to act in such an aggressive and large scale manner. Theories of them biding their time to gain strength and consume the world, or wanting something specific were common theories. Others simply believe that Authoritar casually culling them for decades and taking a hive a few years ago and disemboweling it for research were the cause. "Over one hundred thousand various humanoid infantry, roughly five hundred siege weapons in various forms and 100 ships are currently doing battle with buggers in every space that is tactically sound for them to do so. Why? Because we have been researching these things for a few years now considering their desire to wipe us out and we learned something. Despite this large network of hives, or bug cities, when the bugs want to attack something they seem to send large numbers from the Prime Hive." The general stopped for a moment as large metal gates began to lift up the side of the academy, allowing dozens of giant human-like golems armed with stake firing cannons, shields and melee weapons to march out and join the sides of the brief. "Now we believe enough time has past to ensure a sufficient amount of the bug mass has been siphoned out of the hive to reinforce the dozen hives currently partaking in combat or actually being assaulted with long distance weaponry. In under an hours time we will be re-calibrating the arcane gate system! The local gates we have will instead be linked to gates we have inside airships currently skirting the void high, high above bug territory." The general pointed to large metal box like objects to his right, currently Golems, steam tanks and other war machines were being loaded within. Behind these boxes was a giant crystalline and metal monstrosity, shaped faintly like the silhouette of some form of sea life with huge fins, the flying fortress and arcane engine 'Gerechtigkeit' hovered quietly. "As these airships plummet toward the surface in their entirety they will be activating their gates, we will then deploy these armored drop bunkers and the Gerechtigkeit roughly two kilometers above the Prime Hive and it's surrounds. Too early and the bunkers wards won't be able to negate the force of the landing, too late and the airships will get carved up by bugger anti air and make us lose to many gates and jeopardize the entire operation." The Gerechtigkeit slowly began to hover across the parade grounds to then sit before an arcane gate with several drop bunkers lined up before it on huge steel wagons. Hundreds of the Autoritär soldiers present and citizens in the nearby buildings began to cheer out of control, even the golems were raising their weapons in acknowledgment of the physics defying fortress. "As my countrymen who obviously witnessed or heard of this weapons test firing shows, the Gerechtigkeit is the heart of Operation Autumn Rain. It's arcane psionic displacer aplifier, AKA, the giant beam of light that comes out of this thing on either side of where the controllers are housed is capable of annihilating any matter or psionic trace within it's firing range. We are going to land around the Prime Hive and take the mid range openings from the spires of the Prime itself. We are going to have multiple teams of heavy weapons and flying assets enter these openings as the ground forces hold the openings and attempt to buy time and cause distractions. We are also going to be dropping live but inactive mana bombs on the Prime Hive's spires to cause a bit more of a distraction. The Gerechtigkeit Will be entering one of these opening with a platoon of flight capable golems and will make it's way to the head of the snake at the bottom. Once there, using knowledge acquired from the level 2 hive we took, the golems will then seal the Gerechtigkeit and themselves in with the target by manipulating the nerve system that controls the bulkheads that keep it shut and close them for good. upon obliteration of the target the Gerechtigkeit will switch all power to it's single use gate within it and teleport itself to Hierofane, all escort golems must have boarded the Gerechtigkeit at that time or they will be left behind." "Most of the forces on the surface and in the air are from our country due to the fact that fighting at the Prime Hive without the Gerechtigkeit's protection will surely be suicide. The destruction of the bug heart may put them in a completely paralyzing state, it might also make them feral and berserk. All we know is it will take away their ability to adapt and plot. The swarm currently going north will most likely fall back. At the moment said swarm is ignoring the threats back at bug lands and is pushing on to Kynesburg." "Last minute volunteers for the Gerechtigkeit's role in the operation should make themselves known immediately. Currently ranged offensive specialists, psionic experts and alchemists are desired." The Great Harvest War A squadron of light golems sent out to gauge the makeup of the initial swarm has failed to respond to communications. 6 light golems of the 12th confirmed dead. |

Warlord Vhar Sheel stuck his tongue out to taste the wind as his gutri trotted along under him. Almost immediately he withdrew it. The air was thick with many scents. Foremost among them was the familiar must of the army that surrounded him, the army that he commanded, mingling with the salty scent of the Rockfang Harbor. He cast his eyes up and down the Authoritari beach, observing his warriors and their frog-beast steeds were disembarking from the ocean in modified eggs, steel balls that rolled ever toward the shore from the seafloor. To any human, the purpose of these contraptions would seem abhorrent. His ten thousand warriors had been sealed in these false eggs, which had been forced into the reproductive organs of a hundred she-Leviathans. These mighty sea-beasts were directed toward their destination by the magic of the Thaunari, and laid these eggs just off the coast. To the Oanali warriors, however, this was merely a standard procedure. Far off in the distance, however, was the warm, meaty odor of humanity, a smell each Oanal had been trained from birth to recognize. Generally, the Oanali were trained to attack this smell. Now, however, this abhorrent smell represented Sheel's new allies. This, he knew, would take some getting used to. Sheel and his bodyguard stalked the shore, directing arriving officers and waiting. Finally, this wait paid off. A great egg, gilded in brass with the twisting runes of the Thaunari, rolled onto shore. Sheel dismounted his frog-beast, leaving it in the charge of his bodyguards, and doffed his mussel covered helmet. His naked face bore many horns: small ones above his eyes and draping from his chin, and a mighty horn on his snout the size of a human forearm. In this horn had been carved many twisting runes, and the crevices they left had been filled with steel. Sheel slithered on all six tentacles to the artificial egg as it opened. From the spent metal ball scuttled Sheel's master, a Grand Elder Thaunar. "Great Old One," Sheel reported, bowing low so as to brush the sand with his horn. The Thaunari was scarcely a third of Sheel's size, yet Sheel bowed in deference. The Elder scuttled up to Sheel on his three crustaceanous legs, and cast a shadow over the warlord with the shield-like shell it bore atop its head. Warlord Sheel, the creature beamed its thoughts directly into the great general's mind. Arise. "Thank you, Lord." Sheel's armor clanked as his body undulated upward. "The landing has been a success." I see, the nameless Elder mused. What stage are we in currently? "6,000 warriors have landed, with 4,000 yet to come," Sheel replied. "Our forces will shortly be in command of the River Kyne." We shall be able to venture far enough south to join battle against this plague of locusts? Sheel nodded, bobbing his fierce horn up and down. "The land is pocked with tributaries and oxbows. The water is fresh, not brackish, but it will suffice." Good. We shall need to inform the Autoritäri of our arrival. Do we have riders with enough self-control as not to eat the humans? Sheel chortled. "Just barely, Great Old One. I shall send men to inform them at once." Excellent. I must coordinate with the other Thaunari. I leave the remainder of this deployment in your capable hands, Warlord Sheel. Please carry on. "Yes, m'lord," Sheel responded as his little master scuttled away. Sheel turned back to slither to his frog-beast, and to continue the deployment. |

The Great City was before her. Salicia wanted to look over it, test for weaknesses and strong points, areas for healers to ply their trade from a distance rather than the front. Alas, that was not to be. A simple signal sent the columns forward. They were to link up with those defenders already in position south of the city, and to hold until relieved. Half of her force of Battlemages - thankfully all from the added retinues - were send within the city itself, where Bence had appropriated a plaza for use setting up his spell. She prayed to the Patron of Battlemages (Their Name Lost to Time) that his spell was successful. She had seen a small version in testing. If it scaled well, it would be devastating. Perhaps too devastating... She swatted the thought away like gnats. This was no time to worry about such things. The army was moving into position, shields locking into a gleaming wall. The Battlemages that remained split into two groups. The more armored of their number joined the battle line, ready to project flames like a dragon's breath into the advancing bugs, before retreating to join their brethren in the rear. Behind the line, the other battlemages split into teams of two, and stepped into pre-prepared runes carved into the ground. Staffs were unslinged and the blades at their tips briefly plunged into the soft dirt beneath. Across the field, hundreds upon thousands of smaller runes covering the field before them. As quickly as they appeared, the runes faded. No reason to give the enemy an idea what was coming. As the army's commander, she should stay behind the line. As a Knight-Enchanter, the Gods themselves couldn't keep her away. She dismounted her horse and removed the hilt from her belt. Taking a deep breath, she concentrated on the seemingly incomplete blade, allowing her energy to flow into it. In an instant, the blade sprung to life, large but not unwieldy - without weight and fully under her control. While facing an enemy who's strength and numbers she did not know made the tactician in her nervous, the Battlemage in her was rearing for a fight. Magi Althian lead his force of Battlemages and Spirit Mages towards their staging area for this... operation they were to undertake. A few Hedge Mages followed, a rare sight outside of the Circles themselves - the Hedge Mage used raw magic to attack, rather than forming it into Fire, Lightning, Ice, or Light Constructs like other mage types, and their techniques were closely guarded secrets of the Circles - whose eyes darted about every shadow. Their job was simply support. They would let other nations do the heavy lifting in this conflict, and that suited Althian just fine. Unlike Knight-Enchanters, he had no thirst for combat. He had only agreed to lead this operation because of the opportunity to study these bugs up close. They walked through the city, thankfully drawing few stares. Circle Mages - and, indeed, Mages from most human or elven civilizations - were tattooed with markings to designate them as magic users. They were relatively unobtrusive, simple triangles on the hands and feet that also served as focuses for their magic, but some cities still held a fear or distrust of mages that could lead to problems. In the Circle, of course, such marks were badges of pride, but all knew the prejudices that lay just outside their borders. This small band stopped, milling about by the other units moving for the Operation, and awaited instruction. |
