"So long uncle! I'll be back in a few days! I promise to be back with some supplies." Wei smiled brightly as he waved goodbye to his much older uncle, the elderly man gave a wave back, it might have seemed irresponsible to let the young boy go alone, though Wei had proven himself to be very capable. Wei slung a simple leather bag over his left shoulder, inside it carried various tools, such as a small hatchet for gathering wood, a flint and steel, a set of clothes and of course, a simple flask. As he turned, Wei opened the door to the hut that the two had used as their home, as he walked out, the local village was buzzing as usual, even through the intense heat of the Si Wong desert. The boy draped himself in a hooded cloth, in the desert, this was his most valuable asset, it would save him from being cooked alive during the day and keep him alive during the freezing cold nights.

The boy had begun a long journey, from what he could tell, it would take him about a half a day to make it to the landmark known as "Eagle's Shade", a massive stone that protruded from the sand and cast a shadow where merchants and travelers alike could stop and rest. The young guide made sure to keep his hood draped over his head, he also made it a point to completely cover his body in clothes, at first thought this might seem foolish, though it would pay off in the long run, the dangers of the sun ranged from sun burn, to dehydration. The cloak and clothing provided relief from the sun and thanks to having lived in the desert for so long, the heat did not get to him as much as it would a normal person. Along with that, he knew to keep a slow pace, sweating in this heat was normal but if he moved too much, he ran the risk of overheating, losing a great deal of liquid and becoming completely dehydrated. This would lead to nausea, becoming light headed and sudden weakness.

"Hm...still a long while before the desert starts to cool. Nothing should be out and about today, so I don't need to worry about Sandcrawlers. I should watch out for raiders...those sandbenders are probably even more dangerous." Wei knew that if he was spotted by a Sandbender, he would have virtually no chance to escape, out here where their powers were maximized, the slavers would be able to catch him easily and he would find himself in servitude to a local lord. However, while on the subject his mind wandered on the possibilities of his Earthbending prowess, perhaps he too could pick up the ability to Sandbend, out here that would be an extremely useful tool but the chances of learning it were minuscule at best. The only people who seemed to know it where the slavers of the Si Wong desert.

The sun had taken its toll on Katsu. The poor boy was sweating his balls off, and then some. After walking around and getting lost in the desert for over an hour, Katsu found a small cliff formation that gave him some shade, and he decided to sit under the shade to regain his strength. After sitting for about 20 minutes, Katsu started to see a figure out in the desert. A weak smile crawled onto the fire bender's face. "Maybe it is someone who knows these lands better than I." The young boy murmured to no one but himself. He weakly stood from the shade and wiped his face with his forearm, drenching the sleeve.

The weak fire bender walked out into the sun's deadly gaze again to get to the stranger. Holding up his right hand to try and shield his eyes from the bright light he pushed forward towards the silhouette. As he got closer he started waving towards the figure. It looked like someone around his age, a little younger though. The clothes completely covered him body and Katsu only made the guess based off the stature of the person.

As Katsu closed the distance he started to shout towards the person, "Hey, do you know your way around here? I kinda got lost." Katsu had completely disregarded the fire nation garb he was wearing and forgot about people who still had a hatred for the fire nation, too overcome by desperation and heat stroke to fully think his actions through. Katsu managed a weak smile towards the guy and tried to look friendly and non-threatening as possible.

Wei had luckily found himself at the base of "Eagle's Shade" rock, though as per the usual, he was not alone. From what he could tell, there was another man here though he seemed incredibly unprepared for what the desert had to offer. First off, he was not properly dressed for the weather, if he continued, the sun was going to badly burn his skin and raise his body temperature. Second, he didn't seem to have much on him, at the very least Wei had his clothing, hoodie and some supplies in his bag with him, to top it off, he also had some water. The older boy approached Wei, he was about a foot taller than the young guide, so Wei addressed him while looking up.

"Sure, I know the way through the desert. Though you should probably rest in the shade and cool off first. At the rate you're going, you'll probably be cooked alive and collapse in another ten minutes." The small child extended his hand out and basically led Katsu back into the shade of the massive rock, if they stayed for a while, they might have the pleasure of being able to procure supplies from a wandering caravan and it didn't hurt to get some much needed rest. "So, are you part of the army?" Wei asked bluntly as he sat down, pulling his hood off to reveal his light brown hair and eyes, these features were very common for folk who lived in the Earth Kingdom.

Wei had obviously taken notice of Katsu's shirt, he didn't mind leading firebenders through the desert, he had no prejudice since he knew no one in their right mind would harm a guide in the middle of quite possibly the most deadly of regions. While awaiting a response, Nanashi slung his bag off of his shoulders and opened it up, removing the small flask of water inside. It was large enough to carry a liter of water and was circular in shape, what was even better was the metal it was comprised of kept the water cool. Wei would take a sip before offering some to Katsu, he seemed to need it more since Wei was very acclimatized to the environment but of course he needed some too. "My names is Wei, Wei Shen. I work as a guide with my Uncle, we live near Omashu which is way over in that direction." Wei said as he pointed to the southeast. "I know my way through this desert like the back of my hand but you don't have much with you. So we should wait for the sun to move away before going out."

As Katsu might have noticed, Wei was not a normal boy, most kids would probably be more concerned with playing or buying new toys. Wei was a full on survivalist, able to identify a wide variety of plant life, animals and a built in sense of direction that he had gotten from walking so many groups through the desert during both night and day.

Katsu was taken by the hand by the younger boy and led back into the shade of the giant rock formation. As the boys drew closer, the survivalist asked Kutsu an odd question. Me? In the army? Laughable at best. "No. No, I suppose not. I am merely a traveler from the Fire Nation. I mean no harm, if that's what you're wondering," Ian smiled at the boy as they sat in the shade. Suddenly, Katsu thought about what he said and thought it came off defensively, "Not that you would assume that all Fire Nation citizens were trouble makers! I mean, it is an established stereotype, but that doesn't mean you believe it! Right?! Hehe,Katsu started the scratch the back of his head nervously as he tried to cover up anything that could have been taken offensive. Katsu let out a sigh of defeat.

Katsu took in the appearance of the guy. He wasn't much younger than he, but nearly a head shorter. The guy-eh, Wei, had light colored hair and was kinda cute. Katsu's face grew red, though he would doubt the boy could tell from how red his skin already was from the torment of the sun. As the boy introduced himself Katsu figured he should do the same. "My name is Katsu Yakeda, I'm from Fire Fountain City. The city with the statue of the greatest fire bender ever to exist, well, besides me!" Katsu pointed at himself with his thumb as he spoke the last part. Then Wei did something that Katsu wouldn't have expected, he offered the fire bender some water. Katsu politely took hold of the waterskin and only took a drink. He didn't want to deplete the kind stranger's water supply. "I'm actually a prodigy, or so I've been told." Katsu whispered the last part under his breath as he handed the waterskin back to the Earth Bender..

The boy told Katsu of the plan to wait for the sun to set and Katsu nodded. He understood, though it was a scary thought. The kid didn't look like much of a fighter, but Earth Benders were known for deceiving people with their looks, or so Katsu had been thought to believe. With as weak of a condition that Katsu was in, the sun was at least out, which would magnify his power, however at night, he'd be a sitting duck, but the boy had been nice enough to him this far. There was no reason that Katsu should be suspicious of the guy. He'd offered him water, after all.

"So, you do this for a living, huh? What's the strangest thing that's happened to you?" Katsu couldn't stop himself from asking the question. Growing up in a very strict society, it was hard to imagine enduring the hot sun day in and day out, not to mention traveling through the desert on a daily basis with no society in sight.

Wei sat and listened, though he was pretty mature for his age, one could tell he still hadn't gotten some of the more child like behavior out of his system. As he listened to Katsu speak, he actually crossed his legs and sat up, the kind of behavior one would see from a school though Wei had no formal education, aside form what his Uncle had taught him. "Nah, I know a lot of people from the fire nation aren't like that. I had to escort a few to the Earth Kingdoms because they were scared of what would happen if they stayed in the Fire Kingdom." Aside from the fatigued look, Wei could practically sense that Katsu did not have his strength, this could have been from any number of things but he figured he'd better get something for him to eat.

Wei flipped onto his feet and grabbed his bag, making a small fire pit as Katsu spoke about himself, telling the aspiring Earthbender that he was from "Fire Fountain City." Now, even though Wei had escorted people to the Fire Kingdom, he had not actually been inside of the massive continent, not even hesitant to look as he knew what would happen to an Earthbender in there. "Oh, so you can bend fire? Really, you're that good? That sounds really useful." Wei offered a friendly smile as he organized the stones for the fire pit before reaching into his bag and removing a few pieces of wood and what he thought would be a handful of charcoal. Unfortunately, it seemed there was only a single lump of charcoal left, Wei had forgot to grab a few more pieces. "Oh man...well, might as well use it now. Unless..." The boy took in a breath through his nose and held the charcoal lump out in front of himself, resting it on his left palm. He looked at the piece intensely and honestly, it was a little funny looking, almost like he was trying to stare it down.

After a brief moment, a sort of shape began to poke out form one of the sides of the charcoal, like it was growing. Wei was concentrating hard, however, with that little practice he had, he managed to expand the piece of coal, tripling its size, though it did take quite a bit. "Yes!" Wei whispered under his breath as he broke off a piece and placed it in the pit, stacking the wood in a ti-pi position over it. With his flint and steel he struck a few times before a spark caught onto the wood and began to burn brightly, a young fire taking place. "Hmm...well let's see..." Wei said in response to Katsu as the firebender asked him what the weirdest thing he ever saw or had happened to him while guiding people was. "Well, there was the one time where we were attacked by a sea monster." Wei smiled to himself as no one ever believed him when he started off with that line. "I had to escort a woman and her mother to Kyoshi Island and on the way there we stopped by the lake. They just wanted to wash their things when a massive sea serpent rose from the water. It shot really powerful streams of boiling hot water from its mouth, enough to break boulders into rubble."

Wei pulled his bag over and inside was something that seemed to be wrapped in a large leaf. Wei folded the leaf to display some filleted fish, salmon to be exact, the pink meat of the fish was fresh and lightly salted in order to keep it fresh longer. Wei balanced the meat carefully on some sticks that were leaned close to the fire so they would cook. "Oh! I also had to help deliver a baby once." This actually made him laugh a bit as he checked on the fish, smiling to himself. "That was a little scary but thankfully the little guy was okay. I was leading a water tribe through to Ba Sing Se and one of the pregnant woman there went into labor. I was hoping there would be no more unexpected deliveries on the way there, I wouldn't be able to handle it." Wei sat there quietly for a moment as he watched the flames of the fire, it flickered a bit, cooking the meat slowly though eventually to perfection. He turned to Katsu and spoke.

"So where are you headed? I'm just going to Ba Sing Se to get some supplies, my Uncle really needs help since it's just me and him." As Wei spoke, he took one of the sticks that had the fish filet on it and offered it to Katsu, a fish shish kabob.

As Wei started to build a fire, Katsu got a little figity. He didn't want to start the fire, but he wanted to help. So, he waited patiently as the Earth bender did his earth bending thing and next thing he knew, Wei had started a fire. "You earth benders are so resourceful. I couldn't imagine a fire bender doing much work." Katsu's face lit up again, "Not that I'm saying you, as in you people! I, uh-Oh forget I said anything." Katsu covered his face in embarrassment. As the emotional pain faded away, Wei started to tell Katsu stories of interesting things that have happened during his travels, and Katsu's face lit up as he sat there and watched as the younger guy tells Katsu stories of amazing tales.

Katsu reacts appropriately to all of the situations that Wei tells him about, gasping when he needed to, giving looks of encouragement, etc. Then, Wei asked about him. "Oh. Uh, I'm not sure where I'm going. I'm just wandering. Anywhere, but the Fire Nation." Katsu frowned, and then got on the defensive again "Not that there is any reason I'd avoid the Fire Nation or other fire benders! It's just, I grew up there, and I want to explore the world, ya know? Like the avatars." Katsu's eyes lit up with passion as he talked about it.

After that small spout Katsu's frown was back, "What if I helped out your uncle and you? I imagine a fire bender might be able to help ease some burdens around the house. I just can't work too much all the time. I have a bad heart. Doctor said I had a stress related heart attack at the age of 16 and so I'm at increased risk for the rest of my life, but that's the way the cookie crumbles." Katsu spoke of his history so matter-of-factly. It seemed to unfaze him that he almost died from stress.

Katsu took a sharp breath in through his nose and the smell of salmon assaulted him. "My, that smells heavenly. I'm not sure when the last time I had fish. It's not all that rare in the Fire Nation, very common, actually, just it's been a while for me."

Wei brought his fish kebab to his lips and began nipping away at the chunks of cooked fish meat slowly, luckily it had been salted ahead of time so the flavor was delicious. The young Earthbender was enjoying his meal as he listened to Katsu make an offer that he did not expect to hear. The firebender offered to help Wei and his Uncle Shu out at the house, the boy paused for a moment, swallowing the bit of fish he had in his mouth before tilting his head a tad. "Really? You want to help me and Uncle out? Is there anything you want in return for that? We don't really have a lot of money and our house is a little small." Katsu explained that he couldn't work too much because of a heart condition and that he had nearly died before because of it. "Oh, well I guess I can't take you to help guide. It takes a lot out of you when you first start off but eventually it teaches your body's energy to last longer."

Still, it felt wrong to turn down an offer like that and the guy seemed like he had nowhere to go on top of it. Wei nipped at the bit of fish he had left before thinking to himself deeply on what to do. He thought that he could use some company while on the way to Ba Sing Se and having a firebender around could really help if he ever managed to get in trouble with some raiders or slavers. "Want to come with me to Ba Sing Se? It's quite a journey and once we get the supplies for Uncle, I might be able to go adventuring with you!" Wei smiled a tad as he finished the last of the fish and tossed the small stick he used to hold it in the fire, helping it crackle some more. As he relaxed a bit, Wei looked to the shadow of the rock and noticed it had moved some. He stood up and walked out of the shade, seeing that the sun was no longer at it's highest point, he figured that they had around 6 hours of sunlight left which meant it was time to move.

"Whoops! We almost missed our mark to leave. The sun is only going to be up for a few moments longer and we can't waste that light. Trust me, you do not want to be out in the open at night time." Wei began packing his things and slipped his robe on again, he turned to Katsu and thought to himself, the firebender was ill equipped to deal with the desert heat and he didn't want to just have him over heat. Wei slung his bag off of his shoulders and reached inside until he pulled out an old looking cap and a headband. He took his flask out and soaked both of them without wasting too much water before placing the cap on Katsu's head and tying the headband, though not around Katsu's head. Instead he made sure it was tied around his neck, the back of the neck so that it covered his exposed neck and the water would run down his shirt, keeping him cool. The hat would obviously block any sun from hitting his face and the cool feeling of the water would help prevent any more heat stroke.

"There we go. You should be okay for a while, it's only a short walk until we find the big sand dunes, once we get there we'll have a lot of shade. After that, we'll get to the rocky area and there we'll definitely be able to make better time to get to Ba Sing Se." Wei looked onward to the west as he spoke out. "Ready to head out?" He would ask Katsu, if his firebending companion was, the boy would set off and begin the long walk to Ba Sing Se.

Gingerly biting into the salted fish meat, Katsu listened to the Earth Bender talk about how with Katsu's heart condition he wouldn't be fit for his kind of work, and as Katsu was about to object the Earth Bender made a different offer. "You would want to go adventuring with me? Like the Avatars of old? Like Aang and Korra?! That would be amazing!" Katsu spouted ecstatically. Nodding furiously, "Yeah! I'll go to Ba Sing Se with you. Sounds like a great place to take in some Earth Kingdom culture." As Katsu finished his kebab, he tossed the stick into the small camp fire as well.

Suddenly Wei got up and look up towards the sun and got a bad look on his face. Katsu got the message that they needed to leave, but as he went to stand up Wei went fishing into his bag that made Katsu hesitate. He stayed sitting down and watched as the Earth Bender pulled out a hat and a head band, dosing the head band in water. This made Katsu look puzzled, that was until Wei tied the head band around Katsu's neck. The feeling of the soft material wrapping around his neck made his hair stand on end. It relaxed him so.

Katsu listened with great intensity while Wei explained the plan of action. Katsu nodded in approval and stood up, quickly adjusting the hat to his liking. "Yes, I'm ready. Let's head out! Katsu was eager to start this adventure and followed his newly found friend into the sun.

"So, tell me about youself, Wei. Since we're going to be traveling together, we might as well get to know each other, right?" Katsu beamed a smile over to Wei.

Wei pulled his hoodie up over his head as he continued to walk along the ocean of sand, Katsu following beside him as both of them began to long trek to Ba Sing Se. Wei slung his bag strap over his right shoulder and gripped onto it with his right hand, the heat from the sun would not be as intense as it was now at an angle as opposed to being directly overhead the first time. Things were looking quite good for the mean time, the two had relaxed, cooled off and now had full stomachs meaning they had plenty of energy to expend for the walk, the journey to Ba Sing Se would be a lot easier. However, since Wei did not anticipate meeting someone, he had only packed enough food for himself, this meant they would either have to hunt for something during the cooler hours or arrive at Ba Sing Se completely famished.

Through the momentary silence, Katsu made a request to Wei, wanting to more about him since the two would now be travelling together. "Really? You want to know about me?" Wei asked as he looked to the older boy and thought to himself, he never really talked about himself or had been asked about himself while guiding people through the desert, he was just a guide. "Oh well, let's see...um I'm 14 years old, I've lived my entire life in the Si Wong Desert. Well, at least I think I have, I might have lived somewhere else while I was younger but I don't really remember much that far back." Wei seemed a tad distraught as he spoke those last words, he never really gave his origins much thought, he was just concerned with the here and now. "From what I can remember, it's always been em and Uncle Shu together. I think Uncle said he had a wife and kids but they're somewhere else now."

"I'm also an Earthbender if you couldn't tell." Wei said with a playful smile, trying to lighten up the mood a bit. "Though I'm not that good at it. Uncle Shu said he was an Earthbender too but he never shows me anything, I think he's just lying. Um...let's see...what else..." Wei thought to himself as he continued walking, the boy looked up to catch a quick glimpse of the sky, it was still bright blue, luckily that meant there would be no winds to generate a sand storm. "Oh, back in my village, I'm the only kid. That means I have to work hard to keep up with all of the adults, so I haven't really had much interaction with kids my own age. I hear in Ba Sing Se they have schools where entire groups of kids come together to play and learn useful stuff." Wei almost sounded a bit jealous, though most kids would groan at the thought of going to school, Wei really wished he had the opportunity to attend one. "Hehe, so I'm not fancy royalty, I'm not descended from warriors or anything. I'm just an Earthbending kid that works as a guide."

Wei laughed a bit, the sound of his life being so blunt, he was actually kind of put down by this but the sound of being able to go on an adventure made him brighten up. After a few moments, the two would arrive at the large sand dunes, these were each about 20 feet high and provided great shade from the descending sun. "Sorry it isn't all that glamorous. My life is pretty simple and a little boring really but still, I think I'm lucky to have a home." Wei smiled a bit as he looked around, spotting some tracks in the sand, behind them was a trail of lines that were two inches deep into the sand. Wei examined the tracks and knew these were Sandbender sailboats, the boy decided not to worry Katsu and kept it to himself. "Um, so what about you? Are you really that good a firebender? Does it run in your family?"

Katsu happily listened to the Earth Bender tell the tale of his life to the Fire Bender. He nodded as he listened, letting Wei know he was still listening, enthralled by the brief description of the Earth Bender's life. Katsu was shocked to learn that Wei never had a formal education, that idea was far beyond Katsu's way of thinking. When I find the time, I'll give Wei a taste of school! He'll be so grateful!

After a little bit further, Wei revealed that he was indeed an Earth Bender. Katsu smiled knowingly. Then Wei apologized for having a boring life, in which Katsu was appalled that Wei would think like that, but before Katsu could voice his complaint Wei asked about Katsu's life.

Katsu would address the question, but wanted to face what he had problems with first. "Your life isn't boring! Are you kidding me? This is awesome. This is what excitement is... At least, to me. You get to walk around the desert without having to worry about a strict code you've been forced to live you're entire life. Please, do not apologize for such things." Katsu frowned at the Earth Bender.

"Now, my life. Fire bending runs in my family. I wouldn't say strongly however, my mother cannot, but my dad was great!" Katsu's eyes lit up. "At a young age, it was predicted that i would outshine my father, and he was proud, in the fire bender, no emotional way. Then, going into school, i was forced into the higher level classes, and pushed and pushed, constantly. I trained everyday, from my mind, to my body, to my bending. I would spar for 6 hours a day." Katsu remembered the ache that constantly ravaged his body. "It was the constant sparing and classes that caused my heart attack, you see. The human body isn't meant to be pushed that hard, but in Fire Nation, we did it anyway."

Katsu gained a stoic look. He took a breath and adjusted his hat before continuing. "Now, am i good? My flames are so hot, they appear blue instead of red. My fire is hotter than the freshest coals." Katsu boasted. "I would show you, but i don't want to exert my strength in the sun." Katsu smiled at Wei.

Katsu stopped his boasting because he no longer knew what to talk about. He looked around while adjusting his hat. The dunes were tall, and provided shade for the two travelers, but that also meant they provided shade for far more dangerous creatures. "What do you know if the dangers of this desert?"
