"So long uncle! I'll be back in a few days! I promise to be back with some supplies." Wei smiled brightly as he waved goodbye to his much older uncle, the elderly man gave a wave back, it might have seemed irresponsible to let the young boy go alone, though Wei had proven himself to be very capable. Wei slung a simple leather bag over his left shoulder, inside it carried various tools, such as a small hatchet for gathering wood, a flint and steel, a set of clothes and of course, a simple flask. As he turned, Wei opened the door to the hut that the two had used as their home, as he walked out, the local village was buzzing as usual, even through the intense heat of the Si Wong desert. The boy draped himself in a hooded cloth, in the desert, this was his most valuable asset, it would save him from being cooked alive during the day and keep him alive during the freezing cold nights. The boy had begun a long journey, from what he could tell, it would take him about a half a day to make it to the landmark known as "Eagle's Shade", a massive stone that protruded from the sand and cast a shadow where merchants and travelers alike could stop and rest. The young guide made sure to keep his hood draped over his head, he also made it a point to completely cover his body in clothes, at first thought this might seem foolish, though it would pay off in the long run, the dangers of the sun ranged from sun burn, to dehydration. The cloak and clothing provided relief from the sun and thanks to having lived in the desert for so long, the heat did not get to him as much as it would a normal person. Along with that, he knew to keep a slow pace, sweating in this heat was normal but if he moved too much, he ran the risk of overheating, losing a great deal of liquid and becoming completely dehydrated. This would lead to nausea, becoming light headed and sudden weakness. "Hm...still a long while before the desert starts to cool. Nothing should be out and about today, so I don't need to worry about Sandcrawlers. I should watch out for raiders...those sandbenders are probably even more dangerous." Wei knew that if he was spotted by a Sandbender, he would have virtually no chance to escape, out here where their powers were maximized, the slavers would be able to catch him easily and he would find himself in servitude to a local lord. However, while on the subject his mind wandered on the possibilities of his Earthbending prowess, perhaps he too could pick up the ability to Sandbend, out here that would be an extremely useful tool but the chances of learning it were minuscule at best. The only people who seemed to know it where the slavers of the Si Wong desert. Word Count: 502 |

Wei was surprised to hear Katsu speak out about how Wei's life was exciting, the young Earthbender hadn't thought so but the more Katsu went on, the more Wei began to understand just how different his perception of a normal life was. He had never truly thought of what he was doing as being exciting but compared to most kids, he figured he should have considered his experiences lucky, after all he was truly different in his upbringing but he didn't have anything to compare them to, this was just the norm for him. As he finished collecting his thoughts, Katsu went on to explain his life back in the Fire Nation, the two only knew one another for a few moments but they were getting along quite well, better than the young guide had expected when meeting a completely new face. Katsu gave a vivid description of what it was like to be raised in the Fire Nation, it was very uptight from what Wei could tell. Katsu seemed to be a warrior of sorts, having trained in firebending, being forced to spar for long hours of time, that with the pressure of his father having been such a renowned firebender, it must have been really hard for Katsu to meet expectations. Wei never thought about how lucky he truly was, living with his Uncle, the elderly guide never yelled or taunted Wei for his mistakes, Shu was patient, kind and well mannered, talking Wei through the processes of how to fix his wrong doings. "Wow, it sounds like you were trained to be a one man army." Wei looked at Katsu, a look of admiration for his superb bending talents, that was something Wei wanted to be able to do more than anything, to bend just like his Uncle. "Huh? You can make blue fire? How does that work?" Wei asked confused as he looked to Katsu, surely it was a jest of some kind but Wei kept that last part to himself, not wanting to offend the firebender. Katsu then asked Wei what the dangers of the desert were, the boy had spent a lot of time in the desert and he accumulated quite the list though he figured he would just name the top three dangers of the desert. "Well, basically anything out here can kill you. The heat, the sun and even the sand can erode flesh, making it easier for bacteria to infect you. However, those can be avoided easily, there are 3 things you really need to watch out for. One is the Sandbender slavers. If they see you, you might as well have given up. Out here they have total control since it's a desert and you can't outrun their sailboats. Two is the Sand Sharks. Yeah...if you see a fin in the sand...run. Get to somewhere solid, they can't bend hard rock. Finally...Sandcrawlers. These things walk on six legs and hide in the sand like overgrown trap door spiders. They have a great sense of smell, can crawl on any surface and worst of all, they attack in packs." Wei looked to Katsu and laughed a bit, growing up out here was difficult but listing off those things seemed to be as normal to Wei as knowing the sun would come up every morning. "Right now, we should keep heading to the North West. Keep an eye out for a cave or something that was can make a camp. If not, we'll have to set up in the middle of the open desert plains...that means no evening snacks." Wei continued to walk forward, if Katsu went quiet, he too could probably hear the sharp gusts of air in the distance, these were from the Sandbenders and the sails of their boats cutting through the air. The reason Wei chose to walk through the Sand Dunes was because they were difficult to get over and they provided a cover for the two of them, making them a lot safer from the possibility of being captured. Katsu listened as the young Earth Bender described the dangers of the desert. The first three seemed somewhat obvious, but he did not expect to hear about other benders that lived out in the sands. That part made him slightly nervous. Why would people want to attack others for no reason? That's crazy. Then Wei talked about Sand Sharks, which made Katsu raise an eye brow. He had never heard of a "Sand Shark" before, and it made him confused. Were they like real sharks? Or is it just a formality name, because of the fin? Katsu made note to ask that after Wei had finished his list. The last one he listed was the Sand Crawlers. He instantly pushed those to the back of his mind, the last thing he wanted to think about was unreasonably large bugs out here. Adjusting his hat again, Katsu addressed the question the younger boy had asked him before telling him the dangers of the desert. "Well, unknown to most people, red is not the true color of heat. As something gets hotter and hotter it goes from red, to orange, to blue, to white. White fire from a bender is almost unheard of. However, blue, the next hottest, isn't as rare. Think about a camp fire. If you were to look at the fire down by the coals, you would notice that they were blue, or at least a color close to it. This is why you should cook things next to the coals. It is the most efficient in time and heat." Katsu got lost in his description of the physics of fire. Katsu took this arms and raised them above his head, interlocking his fingers and stretching his arms to full extension. There was an audible pop in his back as he let out a small noise of pleasure. "Now, what about these Sand Sharks. Are they like real sharks? Or? Because it would be horrifying if they were like real sharks... Not that real sharks are terrifying, but that would just weird, ya know?" Katsu continued his stretching of his arms, pulling them across his body one at a time, each time he let out a disgruntled grunt, matched with a small frown. |
