So has anyone heard of the Captain Marvel movie coming out. The holy thing I found is that his villain is going to be Black Adam. I almost shit when I heard who was going to be playing the role. None other than The Rock and was thrilled to hear.

Accurate or not, IMDb.com gives a plot synopsis that indicates they'll be going with the original comic book plot of a wizard by the name of Shazam who seeks out an individual who can impart truth and justice in a cruel world. However, the wizard of Shazam probably doesn't seem as powerful (and gives the overuse of wizened old wizards in everything from Harry Potter to "Lord of the Rings") when the Greek gods from the old "Shazam!" show were a lot cooler to the younger demographic as this film has to be going for along with pleasing the adults.

Mind you, the 1970's "Shazam!" had Billy Batson materializing into a cave with the gods--via some device with twinkling colored lights inside the Winnebago he and his mentor traveled around in across the country. And because this was a low-budget show, the Greek gods were animated characters who stayed stationary...and in the same poses, incidentally. Still, though, all of us kids found that just as fun to watch as when Billy Batson yelled "Shazam!" and turned into Captain Marvel. This show was unparalleled in its hold on the younger generation of the 1970's outside of not having the best special effects and being a bit campy in a cynical 2000's frame of mind.

Obviously, the 2009 movie version is going to have to find a balance in paying tribute to that Saturday morning chestnut while completely re-inventing the whole story so it seems fresh. Other than a more-or-less re-invented comic book/graphic novel "Shazam" series that's going currently with a likely specialized audience, a re-invention for new audiences probably won't be that hard to do.

What about Captain Marvel's villains?

The most famous villain in the original Captain Marvel comic book series of the 1940's and recent graphic novels was and is Black Adam. As of this writing, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is scheduled to play Black Adam and just may be one of the most perfect casting choices for a movie in a while. Most of the past comic book representations of Black Adam look quite a bit like The Rock. And it's smart to bring Black Adam into the fold when the old 70's "Shazam!" series didn't--or maybe would have had the show run longer. Any villain with a background in Ancient Egypt provides a lot of mystery and ominous qualities anyway. Plus, Black Adam is frequently noted as being a little more powerful than Captain Marvel's powers, which provides more unexpected situations...with an expected outcome.

BWAH-HA-HA-HA!

I was looking at IMDB while doing research on my new article on BENDING STEEL (TRUTH AND JUSTICE: Sex and the City) and I followed the New Line Cinema link to the distribution list and found Billy Battson and The Legend of Shazam. I was coming over to Arkham to let everyone know.
