The Regional Elections Act
An Act to Codify and Develop Elections in Ascotera

In accordance with our Constitution that:
3. Citizens of Ascotera have the right to participate and vote in regional elections for:
a) The Premier every 28 days
b) The Senate every 35 days
Section I: Nominations
1.One week prior to every election, a Topic for each election (should they fall on the same day, separate Topics for Senate and Premier Elections) will be opened in the Election Zone Forum.
2.Citizens may nominate themselves or other Citizens to any position in the appropriate Topic.
3.Officials are not automatically candidates, and therefore also must be nominated.
4.Citizens may run for all positions concurrently.
5.Officials may run while still in office for another position.
6.Any Candidate may then begin campaigning in the Campaigning Zone Forum.
Section II: Time
1.In accordance with the constitution and previous elections, the dates of elections will begin with January 25, 2018, and run as the Constitution prescribes.
2.Every election will begin on Thursday at 12pm EST and end the following Friday at 12pm EST (a total of 24 hours).
Section III: Voting (Ranking)
1.Citizens may cast their vote in the appropriate Topic in the Voting Area Forum.
2.Voters shall use an instant-runoff system where in:
a.All Citizens may rank all candidates in order of their choice.
b.On the close of voting, all votes for top choice will be given to that particular candidate. Should a candidate receive more that 50% of all votes, that candidate shall win a seat, and the process shall more to part “d”.
c.Should no candidate get more than 50% of all votes, candidates with no votes shall be eliminated, and the candidate with the least votes shall also be eliminated, with those votes going to their next highest choice of those voters still in the running. Should a candidate still not have more than 50% of all votes, the process repeats.
d.Upon the victory of a candidate, he shall gain the seat. In the Senate, the process will begin again at “b” but with the victor’s votes now going to their next highest vote of candidates who have not already won a seat in the Senate, until all seats have been filled.
3.In the case of a tie, those candidates shall be put into a new election for the subsequent 24 hours (ending Saturday at 12pm EST), and shall continue subsequently, if needed, until a winner is produced.
4.Citizens may vote favorably of themselves.
Section IV: Assumption of Office
1.Any Citizen who is currently serving in or wins an office while also winning another office must indicate which position they will choose to take, forfeiting the other in favor of the first runner up.
2.Newly elected officers’ terms will begin, following the passage of this legislation, at 12am EST of the Monday following their election, ending at 12am EST of the Monday following the next regular election
3.In the case of a tie that is not settled before the beginning of the term, the victor will NOT receive extra time in the term.
Section V: Resignation and Vacancy
1.At any time, an official may resign from office, upon notification of all other officials and the Founder.
2.Upon the vacancy of a seat, whether by resignation or lack of candidates, a special election shall take place between 4 and 10 days after, following the same procedures of a regular election.
3.Those elected to fill vacancies shall only serve the remainder of that current term.
Section VI: Styles
1.The period between regular Premier elections shall be known as an Administration. All Administrations presided over by the same Citizen shall be known as a Premiership.
2.The period between regular Senate elections shall be known as a (Senatorial) Session.
