OOC- Even if you don't have a team entered feel free to join in, you can RP this anyway you want, from the point of view of a fan, a VIP attending and then interacting with others (think informal diplomacy, I suspect in RL many a trade deal has sprung from things like the Olympics), you can be a tourist or even a competitor) everyone is welcome to join in.

The town of Glentoran nestled in the foothills of looming grey mountains, it's buildings hugged the shore of a crystal blue lake. A fine green glen on the edge of the town which hugged the lake's shores had been prepared, a veritable city of tents of all colours surrounded a giant arena for which a temproary grandstand capable of holding some 20,000 people had been erected, added to that people watching from the slopes and standing around it wasn't unknown to have closer to 80,000 here. Some people though came purley for the festivities that accompanied the event, hundreds of distilleries, many one man operations came to sell their wares and had set up little tents stocked with seasoned oak barrels with whiskey inside. Others prefered to take the stroll back into the pretty little town full of stone cottages to try the large number of traditional taverns serving malty beers and rich stews.

The town was already a buzz as from the towns football stadium sounds of drums being tapped, pipes blown and singing could be heard, large crowds already lined the streets and those lucky enough to have tickets began filling the grand-stands. The royal family arrived, all bar three, Queen Sonia, King William and Crown Prince Richard, they would of course be arriving last.

At 11am it was time the doors of the stadium opened and the "ratter tat tat" of the drums filled the air followed a few seconds later by the sounds of pipes and flutes. The Morheim Highlanders, one of the nations most recognisable army regiments lead the way, today was special for them, usually they wore the dark green with red and yellow tartan of Morheim, today each member could wear there own clans tartan, the McClellans dark brooding green and black mingled with the more upbeat McFarland Red and blue. Behind them came the teams, the McKay clan taking the lead as last years champions. The competitors following the drums where each dressed in smart black jackets and their clan's kilts, several carried swords or their own pipes. Eventually it was the team made up of those Morheimians not affiliated to a clan to enter, they too wore kilts, the red and yellow tinged one of their nation. A polite cheer and clap went up as the teams from overseas entered, each competitor having been provided with a kilt made up of their own nations colours, it made a rather colourful and pretty display.

The procession marched through Glentoran until they reached the arena. The Queen and King William had arrived slightly ahead of them and taken their seats, the Queen wearing a tartan dress had recieved a loud cheer on her arrival, this was her first time at the games and she was really looking forward to them, she sat in front of her son Marcus Jnr who was tapping away to the rhythm of the closing drums.

The drums and pipers stood playing as the teams entered the arena, they lead the teams to positions as if on military parade as a lone piper continued playing, the erie music drifting through the valleys. Eventually everyone was in place and it fell to Chancellor of the Exchequer Oscar Roche, a fiercly proud, if not rather small, Highlander. He took to the microphone; "Ladies and Gentleman thank you for attending, we are about to begin the annual games and I am deeply honoured that this year our Stewardess is none other than Queen Sonia." The crowd cheered loudly as the Queen waved and took her position next to Roche, "Before her Majesty declares the games open, and we can all get a drink, it is customary for competitors to present the Stewardess with a gift."

A member of each team moved out of their teams and approached the stand, the Queen chuckled as she noticed her 2nd husband Crown Prince Richard striding over resplendent in his kilt. Along with the others he knelt holding his large bunch of wild flowers as was custom. The Queen chatted with each competitor as she accepted the bouqet. As she got to Richard she simply smiled, kissed his cheek and handed his gift to an aid. It was then customary for the Stewardess to present one team with her favour, a token personally to them, clearly the crowd expected Richard to be given it, instead Sonia walked back to the 10 year old boy who would be representing the McFarland clan in the dancing and raised him to his feet, she kissed his cheek before knotting her scarf around his neck, the assembled McFarland's cheered wildly as Richard gave his wife a playful eye roll. The Queen escorted her choosen favourite back to his team before returning to the platform. "It gives me great pleasure to accept these flowers from all teams competing here today, I am proud to finally get to attend these games and prouder to be your steward, I hope you all have a wonderous time. May you play hard, play fair , be proud of your efforts and may the best man win." The lone piper continued to play as the teams marched by the Queen once more, this time Richard peeled off from his team and clambered the barrier to the grandstand giving everyone a flash of his boxer shorts under his kilt.

"Ah, he's no real Highlander" a woman yelled from close by bringing a chorus of laughs from the crowd. Richard stopped and pretended to flash the spectators bringing a louder laugh and cheer from the crowd as the Prince entered into the spirt of the event. He joined his wife on her right hand side and took a seat.

"You've been drinking haven't you?" Sonia asked him taking hold of his hand as he sat to watch the rest of the ceremony.

"Hard not to, more whiskey and hip flasks in that parade than I've ever seen." he smiled his eyes slightly wide.

The crowd watched various performances as competitors began preparing for events in the tented city, when finally the opening ceremony was over the Queen retired to one of the large tents reserved for the VIP's.

There was no way Duchess Orlaith Ó Dubhshláine was going to miss these games, the odd village back home in the Union held small games but none on this scale. She'd arrived the night before with her friend from University Aideen. The pair had risen early and had a hearty breakfast, "lining the stomach" so to speak, they planned a day of watching the events, drinking and at night dancing. They'd walked along following the procession before taking their seats in the VIP area. As the pipes played Orlaith handed Aideen a small silver flask with whiskey in. "Its like a taste from home" Orlaith said as Aideen handed the flask back and she took a little drink.

The pair smiled as the little boy was given the Queen's scarf, a rather nice touch rather than giving it her husband, or second husband, that was something the Duchess couldn't get her head around, but she figured that the visit would probably explain a fair few things, she'd been rather happy that the Emperor had given her this task, it was pretty simple, come to the games, be polite, meet a few people and enjoy yourself, essentially what she'd have done given half a chance herself.

As the ceremony finished people began melting away and the two of them made their way round the various tents buying a few souveniors, the odd glass of whiskey and the like before merrily making their way into the VIP tent where they found a table and ordered some food as the place began to fill up.

Prince Robert had just returned from his time on HMS Sharpe, he'd been looking forward to a few days relaxing at home but instead he'd been ordered to come and cheer on the United Moreland athletes in these Highland Games. The more he'd read about them on the flight over the more he was actually looking forward to them, it seemed like simply an excuse for a big party and drinking session and Robert had no problem with that in the slightest. He'd recruited his co-pilot Lt.Tom Voice to come along but he'd slept most of the flight.

After touch down the pair had made their way up to Glentoran and into the first traditional store they could find, having outfitted themselves with kilts and jackets they'd made their way to the sports grounds. A few tourists, seeing how well dressed they were, mistook them for locals however the strong Moreland accents soon showed them their errors. They'd sat watching the opening ceremony with interest. "Rob, if those bloody pipes came marching over the hill at you in battle what would you do?" Tom asked as the column of pipers entered the arena.

"Either run or just wait to die" he chuckled as he took a sip of a beer, even though they'd got tickets for the VIP area they'd chosen to join the crowds, it was a much better way to get an idea of what the place was like, and that could be summed up in one word "crowded" With the opening ceremony over they made their way around the festival grounds, the lines to get drinks were rather large and so the Prince pulled his friend towards the VIP tent. "These things do have their uses" he said pointing t the wrist band they had on their right wrists. As they approached the VIP area they flashed the security guards brightly coloured plastic band and were immediately let in.

The bar was easy to get to and Tom attracted the attention of a bar maid who wandered over, "Two local beers please." he said unsure what to really order. He noticed lots of people with whiskey but being unused to drinking that he preferred to stick to what he knew. He took the two large glasses off the bar and headed back to Robert. "Cheers" he said raising a glass.

"Cheers" Robert replied. "Lets find some seats." the pair circled the inside of the tent, while the bar was easy enough to get to seats where not and most tables were taken. "Lets see if we can join them" Robert said pointing to the table where a pretty blonde girl and her friend were sat. "Excuse me miss, may me and my friend borrow those two seats" he asked nodding at the two empty seats.

Orlaith looked up and smiled at the rather handsome man, "No help yourselves" she said gesturing for him to take a seat, she looked carefully at him, he seemed familiar in someway. "Are you staying at the Royal Hotel in town?" she asked, then almost as soon as she said it the memory hit her, "Oh, I'm sorry, your Prince Robert of Moreland aren't you?" she said feeling herself blush. "I'm Duchess Orlaith from the Teutonic Union" she said rather more formally, "This is my friend Aideen." the Duchesses friend gave a casual wave still wondering exactly who this guy was.

"Hi" Aideen said returning to her drink.

"How you finding the games then Your Highness? " Orlaith asked.

Robert took the seat next to Orlaith, she wasn't what he'd expected from a Celt, blonde hair and blue eyes, perhaps being from the Teutonic Union they'd been some inter-marriage with other families, he mentally kicked himself, here he was sitting enjoying a drink with a beautiful woman and he was allowing his mind to wander to nonscence. "They've been interesting" Robert said with a smile. "and please, it's just Robert, or Rob, or whatever, just not Prince or Your Highness, after all I'm off the clock so to speak, just here to enjoy a few good drinks, some cultural experiences and good company" he raised his glass towards the Duchess. "Now it's Orlaith Ó Dubhshláine isn't it?" he pronounced the surname carefully but was still not 100% sure he hadn't butchered it. "As a Celt then I'd assume this is all second nature to you, perhaps you and Aideen could be our guides to the events, because frankly one looks like throwing a bag of hay and another running around with a telegraph pole?"

Orlaith burst out laughing, "Oh dear" she chuckled striring her drink with her straw. "These games developed over centuries of secrecy, you can't just say things like that, there vital to my cultural identifty" she tried to keep a straight face and then just burst out laughing again. "But seriously" she placed a hand on his, "Probably not the best place to mock their games, they are very serious." She leaned back in her chair finishing the last of her drink. She studied him carefully for a moment, he was a rather handsome man she thought, influential, handsome, charming, he was ticking the boxes.

"I'll tell you what, get me and Aideen a cocktail each and you can count us in as tour guides." she extended a ladylike hand towards him. "Deal?"

OOC- Sorry forgot about this

"Done and done" Robert said shaking Orlaith's hand before tapping Tom and motioning towards the bar, "Help me get the drinks in."

"I'll never say no to you putting your hand in your pocket" Tom said standing up and following Robert towards the bar. As they got out of ear shot Tom nudged Robert in the back, "You two seemed to be getting on well, I reckon your in there, although your batting well above your average."

"Its not like that Tom" Robert said looking back to where Orlaith and Aideen were talking, "Although she's a good looking woman" his words made Tom laugh.

"Jeez Rob you sound about sixty, she's hot Rob, your allowed to say it. Anyway if your not interested maybe I could have a crack."

"Not on your life" Robert said defensively, truth be told he did fancy her, she was pretty and seemed to be fun, the fact she was a noble was a bonus as his sister couldn't complain if he did hit things off with her. "Yes Tom she's hot, ok" the bar staff appeared and asked what he wanted, "Four cocktails of your choosing so long as they have whiskey in them please" Rob ordered and watched as the man began slinging bottles in the air mixing a cocktail with an audience. He slid four drinks over towards Robert moments later, each topped with a curl of orange peel.

"Four Auld Fashions" the man announced as Robert handed over the money and picked the drinks up. They returned to the two girls just as two other guys had begun inching their way over. Rob slid into the seat next to Orlaith and presented her with the drink. "An Auld Fashioned apparently." he handed her the glass, "Cheers" he said raising his glass.
