The King was rather enjoying the day, he'd spent the morning catching up with old friends in the Army and unlike when the Vinitsian's had visited he was dressed in his old Special Forces uniform. His Prestige Cloak made from the feathers of exotic birds hung around his shoulders, his wife Queen Maata was dressed in a simple black and white patterned dress with her own cloak made from the skin of a wild dog. They watched as the Field Marshall's aircraft began to descend and the phalanx of green jacketed soldiers came to attention, newly polished wooden rifles tipped with silver bayonets over the shoulder, uniquely the twin cap badges of the Commonwealth Guard showed their original military unit and then the ceremonial Guards' emblem.

Sgt. Serevi stood prepared, he rather enjoyed this ceremony, the one to the Vinitsian a few days earlier had been rather tame, they were after all a merchant nation, this however was a high ranking military official. As the Field Marshall's aircraft stopped and he descended the stairs Sgt.Servei yelled out. "WHAKARONGO" [1] He rose himself to the full extent of his 6ft 8 inch height, his dark skin criss crossed by tattoo's and scars. He carried a heavy wooden club in his hand. He advanced on the Field Marshall singing in Maori and waving the club as if to commit menace. The Commonwealth Guard familiar with the song joined in.

"Who was this man
Who put out the challenge?
A chief from Ngapuhi
This was Rangi Umaga[2]

He was a strong man
In the eyes of his Maori people
He challenged the government
Of the white skinned people

The Bay was his home
Tapeka his lofty mountain
Be strong, oh friend
Respected Rangi Umaga

Tapeka was climbed
and the flagpole of Isernia knocked flat
to overcome the power of the enemy.
Keep alert there Rangi Umaga!

A chief of Ngapuhi
A strong man
The pride of the Maori people
Keep alert there Rangi Umaga!"

By now Sgt.Serevi was just a few meters away from the Field Marshall, his tongue stuck out and eyes wide open, without taking his eyes of the man he sank to one knee and took out an orchid from the back of his belt, he placed it on the floor and then took two steps back still keeping unwavering eyes on the guest.

The older Field Marshal, now Foreign Minister in the Politburo, was instantly impressed by the view of the new nation as he stepped down from the door of the aircraft. It was different, and he could tell that these people, however new, were bound to be much different. And different they were. While his own guards, dressed in ceremonial olive brown/green suits, with trench coats and low caps, holding ceremonial Bitva rifles in their arms, these men had feathers. He himself had a dark blue, almost black, suit, reserved for officers, and a dark brown trench coat with gold piping, and a large cap on his head.

What had surprised him the most, however, was the sudden approach of the man in front of him. In what seemed to be a violent tradition, one he hoped not to offend, he was beset by this singing and dancing warrior, and when it had finished, the man had laid a flower on the ground in front of him. While he watched the man carefully, he bent down on one knee, picked the orchid up, carefully cupped in his two hands, and handed it back to the man.

Sgt. Serevi didn't let on that it was the King who should have received the Orchid, infact the King had half expected this to go wrong but then again he wasn't a man to hide away his nations customs, they'd always served the people well and the bonds of tribal affiliation had been what eventually had freed their nation. Serevi turned the spear so the blade was now pointing at him, he gave a slight jerk of his head, almost invisible to anyone but the Field Marshall indicating that he should follow. Serevi now walked with exaggerated high steps back towards his King where it was him rather than the Field Marshall who handed the flower back.

"Welcome to the Commonwealth" the King said extending a hand out, without warning he pressed his own forehead gently against the Field Marshalls and touched noses. After a brief second he pulled back and the crowd cheered as those warrior and women began songs of celebration. Queen Maata approached.

"Welcome" she said settling for a handshake the Field Marshall was more familiar with, "I suppose my husband didn't explain before that" she smiled, "It's called the Hongi, its a symbolic sharing of the Breath of Life, in our culture it symbolises that a guest is now part of the tribe for as long as they stay, in the past it was a way of saying that the Chief's breath was in the visitor, as such an attack by one of the Chiefs men on the guest would be as though you attacked the chief himself"

King Piripi nodded, "Indeed" he waited for one of the singing women to approach and the crowd went quiet as she draped the Wild Dog skin cloak around his shoulders. "That is a prestige cloak" he explained, it denotes you have done some greet deeds for your community. He began walking side by side with the Field Marshall. "I apologise for all this excessive tradition upon your arrival, just you see our nation stands at a crossroads. Only recently did we finally get all Maori back in one nation here on the island. For some our traditions had been oppressed for several hundred years, for others they had hardly changed. We now have some who believe the time for what you have seen has passed, while others believe they are needed more now than ever before. Personally I think we need to keep them and educate the world about them, after all we didn't fight for hundreds of years to forget our identities." he opened the car door and motioned for his guest to enter, next Queen Maata took the seat next to the Field Marshall while the King sat opposite in the rear of the large state car. "Now can I offer you a drink?", the King pulled a bottle of red wine and a bottle of orange juice from the car's fridge.

With the ceremony complete, Corinth turned to the Captain of the Guard and waved his hand. The officer nodded, turned around, and ordered the men to cut their sabres (sheath them), which they did, and he removed his coat. It was hotter here than up in DEN, as the traditional wool trench coats did little to ease the heat. In fact, the men were relieved when they took off the uniforms, but they wouldn't let that on.

The Field Marshal only unbuttoned his coat, but that was enough to cool him down. And now he walked into the car, careful to not let the skin drop. All in all, he thought it was an interesting custom. Perhaps he'd keep this...

"Your Majesty, do not apologize for your own traditions. To do that would be to apologize for being your own, free, sovereign people, and that would be unacceptable." Corinth replied. "Although, I must admit, I did not expect any of this. I trust I did not offend too much? At any rate, I would welcome a drink. Thank you very much."

Queen Maata picked up a bottle of red wine and poured a glass for each of them. While she did this King Piripi began chatting. "I thought we'd travel to the Sea Palace, it's the Palace of the royal family here although its actually an old Iresnian Port Fortress, once the war for freedom was over it was decieded we should have a royal palace and rather than build something from scratch we simply converted one of the enemies signs of repression, you see it controlled the route into Hunter's Bay and from there the rivers that allowed our ancestors to canoe far inland." the harbour came into view and Piripi lead his guest down to the dockside.

A large carved canoe waited with around fifty paddlers already seated, the canoe captain helped Queen Maata aboard before ensuring the Field Marshall was seated before he gave a loud shout and as one the paddlers began manoeuvring the boat away from the dockside. The men began chanting as they paddled out towards the centre of the harbour where the short squat stone fortress stood, trees and plants adorned its roof along with its white light house which was now a royal villa. The internal ring that had once housed a garrisons parade square was a communal garden while the very bowels had been turned into bedrooms, state rooms, kitchens, it even had a ball room, although what the King was most pleased with was it's large communal cinema which was mainly used to host rugby match screenings on Saturday afternoons. It took fifteen minutes of paddling for them to get out there. "Usually we either helicopter on or use a motor launch, just today is special" the King smiled as he lead the Field Marshall to the roof where a table and comfortable chairs had been arranged. "Now with it being a lovely sunny day I thought our business would be best conducted here." he sat down in one of the woven reed chairs. "Now if I may ask you to indulge one of our traditions, it is customary for a visitor from a far off place to share the news of their land or a story before anything formal begins, I also find it a useful way of getting to know the people I''m talking to. Could I ask you for such a thing?"

"You may most definitely ask. I only would ask you what you would like to hear. We have many stories and news, but we do not have the time for all of them, no?" Corinth asked, sitting down carefully on the reed chairs and staring at the scenery around them. In all of his time serving his nation, he had never seen such traditions. Never had he seen anything close to the amount of traditions that he had just endured, but he could not tell if that was a good or bad thing. Nevertheless, today was a grand day, and he would spend as much time enjoying it as possible.

The Queen gave her husband a side ways glance, it was not usual for someone to want something specific to say, "Well perhaps Field Marshall you could tell us about your own history, how did you reach the rank of Field Marshall perhaps" she asked to break the ice.

"Ahh. That was quite a while ago... Let me remember... Ah. Yes. It was right after the exterminatus order had been given for Valkyrie, and after our second base had been overrun by the Wolf Clan. See, they were a religious sect and they almost destroyed us. I led the defense of Tetrarch, and held it for hundreds of days. I earned this retired rank after the 256th day of their seige, in which my Command Platoon and I personally held off the Clan at what is now known as the Red Gate for one whole week, commanding the entire defense even then." Corinth replied, coughing a little bit to clear his throat. Then he turned to continue. "Ahh.. Yes. After the 7th day, we finally pushed them back to the city's edge. But after the civilians were evacuated, we were given the order to eliminate the Clan by any means possible. I will tell you, no battle you will ever hear of will describe Tetrarch and the Siege of the Red Gate.

"We fought for every inch of that city, every room, every floor, every building and block. It was truly brutal." He replied, and finished.

The King nodded as the story was told, he'd been in his fair share of fights, most of them though Guerilla skirmishes with Iresnian Special Forces out in the Commonwealth's forests and countryside. "Sounds a rough time" the King said as the Field Marshall finished, "I'm glad to hear that like us you've put that kind of conflict behind you. So what does the future hold for the DEN?" the King asked.

"Always to business" Queen Maata interceeded. "The Field Marshall may have questions for us, I mean I think we've pretty much had him confused since he stepped off the plane, I'll admit we're a cultural throw back in many ways."

"Of course, if at any point we do anything that confuses you or if you wish to know anything just ask." King Piripi agreed. "However if you have nothing you wish to know then perhaps you would explain any objectives you've been dispatched with." the King asked his guest.

"I do not mind a country's traditions, especially when they are so proud of it as you are. Although they confused me, I must admit, it was an interesting time." He explained with a smile, and then inhaled a little, before returning to the actual topics. "Interesting. Well, we were dispatched to talk about anything diplomatic. For starters, we actually came with the interest of food. As you know, we're... what's the word, ah, frozen. So food is a little hard to come by."
