The King was rather enjoying the day, he'd spent the morning catching up with old friends in the Army and unlike when the Vinitsian's had visited he was dressed in his old Special Forces uniform. His Prestige Cloak made from the feathers of exotic birds hung around his shoulders, his wife Queen Maata was dressed in a simple black and white patterned dress with her own cloak made from the skin of a wild dog. They watched as the Field Marshall's aircraft began to descend and the phalanx of green jacketed soldiers came to attention, newly polished wooden rifles tipped with silver bayonets over the shoulder, uniquely the twin cap badges of the Commonwealth Guard showed their original military unit and then the ceremonial Guards' emblem.

Sgt. Serevi stood prepared, he rather enjoyed this ceremony, the one to the Vinitsian a few days earlier had been rather tame, they were after all a merchant nation, this however was a high ranking military official. As the Field Marshall's aircraft stopped and he descended the stairs Sgt.Servei yelled out. "WHAKARONGO" [1] He rose himself to the full extent of his 6ft 8 inch height, his dark skin criss crossed by tattoo's and scars. He carried a heavy wooden club in his hand. He advanced on the Field Marshall singing in Maori and waving the club as if to commit menace. The Commonwealth Guard familiar with the song joined in.

"Who was this man
Who put out the challenge?
A chief from Ngapuhi
This was Rangi Umaga[2]

He was a strong man
In the eyes of his Maori people
He challenged the government
Of the white skinned people

The Bay was his home
Tapeka his lofty mountain
Be strong, oh friend
Respected Rangi Umaga

Tapeka was climbed
and the flagpole of Isernia knocked flat
to overcome the power of the enemy.
Keep alert there Rangi Umaga!

A chief of Ngapuhi
A strong man
The pride of the Maori people
Keep alert there Rangi Umaga!"

By now Sgt.Serevi was just a few meters away from the Field Marshall, his tongue stuck out and eyes wide open, without taking his eyes of the man he sank to one knee and took out an orchid from the back of his belt, he placed it on the floor and then took two steps back still keeping unwavering eyes on the guest.

"Well there is little the Maori like more than food" he patted his stomach, he wasn't a particularly tubby man, several decades of harsh military living ensured of that. "Our nation has a strong agricultural sector, we also have a large fishing fleet, most farms are owned by the various Iwi (tribes) who operate them a little like a Co-Operative, however they do sell their surplus and with the good weather and soil we're blessed with plenty of that, up in the Highlands where the soil is thinner we've got a rather extensive mass of sheep for mutton and lamb. So I am sure we have something to tempt your taste buds" the King grinned, "So I assume you'd be looking at some kind of deal to be allowed to purchase food supplies at a good rate? That being assumed what kind of deal do you have in mind?"

"We do have a deal for that. However, DEN buys all of the food as the government. For that, we'd like to offer you something in return. I see you have fishing fleets, no? Well... we are a very proud, strong naval nation. We would be happy to perhaps trade some ships?" He asked with a grin.

"With respect it is clear we have two different economic systems, that doesn't mean they aren't compatible. You see the issue is this, we have boats, we have fishing ships, we're a nation that has always revered the ocean, its what brought us to this land, as such ships are not a problem. Beside the various co-operative farms and private farmers based in the Commonwealth gain nothing from your deal. There is no motive for them to sell to you, we as a government do not choose who our farmers sell to, what we can do is make the export easier while you make the import into your nation easier, this would see our farmers more likely to sell to you. They make a profit for themselves and their business and meanwhile we tax the profits they make."

"Ahh. I see. Would there be anything we can offer? Perhaps energy? Anything? We would very much love to trade with your farmers and fishermen, and perhaps this way, we could work out something." He said with a smile.

" A deal is certainly doable." the King said, "In terms of offering things I think you'd find cold hard cash would work perfectly well. Perhaps a system where your government agrees to buy a set amount of foodstuffs each year and guarantees a price as long as it delivered" the King thought for a moment, "So for example you would make arrangements with a fishing fleet to say provide you with 10tonnes of Cod, you would agree a price of say.....the international market value or the price of production plus 10%, whichever is higher at the time of the deal. Then when the company make delivery they get paid, we then tax them on their profits and we can use that tax money to then run our nation."

The Queen interjected, "Let us just be clear Field Marshall, from our end there is no issue with your government approaching our farmers and offering to buy their produce, in fact should you agree to remove tariffs on food products I believe you would probably see some of our larger agricultural companies approaching you once they know you are willing to buy their harvests. Now obviously we would offer like for like removal of tariffs, you remove yours on food products we would remove ours on food products, after all our climates vary and I am sure their are food products you have a surplus of that our nation would show an interest in, so for example beyond lamb and fish our nations protein consumption is limited, you'd maybe see food production companies interested in things like beef, chicken or pork, us having removed our tariffs on food goods would therefore see more being imported and you'd reap those dividends." The Queen hoped her husband approved of her imposition.

"I was thinking the exact thing. Our more warmer climates have a particularly good steak there. Perhaps you would be interested?" He asked with a smile, and then he leaned back. "As far as cold hard cash goes, what currency do you prefer? Ours is a very high value, and we fear there may be some small issues of miscommunication."

"As for currency that would be between the seller and buyer to determine, clearly there are internationally recognised currency conversions, what matters more is whether the conversion rate is to be set at the time of agreeing the deal or at the time paid. I would suspect though that our farmers would prefer to be paid in Iwian Credits. However it is not my place to set the price at which they would sell." King Piripi replied, "Perhaps we should begin considering putting things down in writing." the King said.

"Oh most definitely. If I may... I suggest we put a set conversion rate to adjust every year and pay in, say, Iwian?" He asked with a smile. "Please. Let us discuss this."

"What is wrong with using the international exchange market, the issue I have with us setting a rate is that, and I speak for myself I am not an economist, there are people who deal with setting exchange rates as a day to day business, I suggest we allow them to handle the exchange rate. Also by setting it once a year it doesn't take into account any situations that cause swift changes, I will not see a system where fairness is not ensured." the King said, "I propose a simple solution, when two parties make an agreement a price is agreed to be paid in the currency of the nation making the sale, this deal is then set using the international exchange rate that day. So if I may illustrate, lets say your government decide to but a tonne of wheat off one of the Iwi's they would agree to pay a set amount of Iwian Credits, that deal would be subject to a contract regardless, so they simply use that days conversion rate to make sure both sides know what is being paid. Once goods are delivered that amount of money is transferred."

"I agree with this. I only suggested fixed exchange rates so we could trade reliably." He replied, and then switched topics. "I've taken a look at your military, and I must ask, is there anything I can do to help?"
