The King was rather enjoying the day, he'd spent the morning catching up with old friends in the Army and unlike when the Vinitsian's had visited he was dressed in his old Special Forces uniform. His Prestige Cloak made from the feathers of exotic birds hung around his shoulders, his wife Queen Maata was dressed in a simple black and white patterned dress with her own cloak made from the skin of a wild dog. They watched as the Field Marshall's aircraft began to descend and the phalanx of green jacketed soldiers came to attention, newly polished wooden rifles tipped with silver bayonets over the shoulder, uniquely the twin cap badges of the Commonwealth Guard showed their original military unit and then the ceremonial Guards' emblem.

Sgt. Serevi stood prepared, he rather enjoyed this ceremony, the one to the Vinitsian a few days earlier had been rather tame, they were after all a merchant nation, this however was a high ranking military official. As the Field Marshall's aircraft stopped and he descended the stairs Sgt.Servei yelled out. "WHAKARONGO" [1] He rose himself to the full extent of his 6ft 8 inch height, his dark skin criss crossed by tattoo's and scars. He carried a heavy wooden club in his hand. He advanced on the Field Marshall singing in Maori and waving the club as if to commit menace. The Commonwealth Guard familiar with the song joined in.

"Who was this man
Who put out the challenge?
A chief from Ngapuhi
This was Rangi Umaga[2]

He was a strong man
In the eyes of his Maori people
He challenged the government
Of the white skinned people

The Bay was his home
Tapeka his lofty mountain
Be strong, oh friend
Respected Rangi Umaga

Tapeka was climbed
and the flagpole of Isernia knocked flat
to overcome the power of the enemy.
Keep alert there Rangi Umaga!

A chief of Ngapuhi
A strong man
The pride of the Maori people
Keep alert there Rangi Umaga!"

By now Sgt.Serevi was just a few meters away from the Field Marshall, his tongue stuck out and eyes wide open, without taking his eyes of the man he sank to one knee and took out an orchid from the back of his belt, he placed it on the floor and then took two steps back still keeping unwavering eyes on the guest.

The King was slightly taken aback. "Our military is an area where we are aware we may not be on the technological cutting edge. You have to remember we've been in a perpetual state of war for almost the last century. Despite being ill equipped compared to the Iresnian's we've retaken our island and established the Maori nation here, our military is purely defensive and we see no reason to change that. Our military, like our country, will go through modernisation, however this will only be after our Ministry of Defence have undertaken a full review and any procurement having gone through a tendering process, but thank you for your concern."

"Sounds much like our history, a perpetual state of war. Unlike you, however, our economy thrived on that. Regardless, anything we can do to help, if that means training or equipment, we will be happy to provide. Even building." He replied, and fished through his pocket, before producing a folded batch of papers, upon which was a seal. He put it on the table, and slid it towards the King. "Your Majesty, that is a detailed list of any available asset we can sell or gift you. It includes our economic output, our raw materials, our services, mercenaries, vehicles, and weaponry. I think it would be most useful."

"We do not use mercenaries" the King said sternly, the concept of being loyal to anything other than your people was abhorrent to the Maori, a man was loyal to his chief and his King. The guest seemed intent on pushing a military agenda, the King was aware that his country may not have been as well equipped as others but what they lacked in up to date technology they made up for with their skills and organisation.

The Queen spotted her husbands disdain for the very notion, "You see, we're a nation that is moving away from war, we're a nation that is piecing together our future, we are more than able to defend ourselves and we have no desire to expand, after all that would make us a hypocrite, fighting for years to free ourselves from Imperialism, only to practice it ourselves. I think what you'll find is the average Maori wishes nothing other than being permitted to enjoy being part of their Iwi, have a good game of rugby, the occasional hangi[1] and know that their children are going to have a better future than themselves."

"My wife is....as always.....right" the King said, "Our military review will be undertaken in due course, any equipment we wish to buy will be put out to public tender, ensuring we get the best value for money. I don't wish to sound rude but I suspect should we decide to buy a new frigate several other nations would be interested in supplying us, including our own dockyards, we would be foolish to commit to buying from just one nation as we can then haggle over the price and get the best deal for us."

"Do not worry in the least. That list has everything we could possibly trade." He replied with a nod. "Anything that you may wish, please tell me. I will be most grateful to provide. But I fear I may have pushed diplomacy much too much."
