![]() Official Name: "O Reino de Japao" - the Kingdom of Japao Population: 20,000,000 Government Type: Absolute Monarchy Government Head: King Shinji Medeiros IV Overview: A small yet fabulously wealthy nation in the Southeastern Sea, Japao has long had the dubious distinction of being one of the most corrupt nations on earth with a long history of decadence, excess and underhanded involvement in the far east. Drug laws are notoriously non-existent, prostitution is legal/completely unregulated and companies are free to go about daily business with little in the way for restrictions. Though crime is officially recognized as 'minimal', the sheer lack of laws and regulations ensure that - short of violence - the peddling of hard drugs (methamphetamine, cocaine, MDMA and other designer substances), human trafficking, and widespread pimping is extremely common (and ignored) by authorities too willing to take a bribe. Historically, Japao has always had an antagonistic relationship with the Divine Khanate of Los Vatican - having been the primary source of the latter's illicit drug market and frequently playing host to criminal elements peddling flesh from the DKLV and the rest of the east. Oil spills from Japao's many offshore drilling stations always end up making serious landfall onto the Khanate mainland, damaging thousands of kilometers of beach front and wildlife damage. Economy: Economically, its position as a trade hub intermediate between East and West have allowed it to reap huge profits throughout the last century. Rich oil deposits, fishing waters and offshore minerals give it a unique position as a provider for much of the West's energy needs - Ignatz is listed as the largest consumer of Japaoese oil and enjoys a number of benefits from its mutual trade agreement. As a trade hub, it has attracted hundreds of international businesses thanks to its geographic location and liberal work laws. Greater influx of trade has seen many people visit the "Islands of Sin" for its fabled casinos, nightlife, and innumerable red-light districts. The sale of recreational drugs (hard and soft) is a common attraction in the Island Nation; hundreds of thousands arrive yearly for the opportunity to drink, whore, gamble, and indulge in even the hardest of narcotics. Nearly everything short of open violence and tax evasion is permitted, giving the nation the well deserved moniker of Audaxia's '21st century Gomorrah". |

Society![]() Celebration of Carnaval in Salvador Overview: Though outwardly an exceptionally liberal people blessed with a multitude of civil rights and freedoms, there is a huge divide between the Japaoese social and military factions. Thanks to years of economic prosperity and social liberality, the overwhelming majority of the Japaoese enjoy a vibrant existence centered around entertainment, social media and a devil-may-care attitude derived from the the near total lack of drug regulations, social inhibitions and the implementation of a bread/entertainment program that ensures that even the poorest enjoy a pleasant lifestyle. The entertainment sector is recognized as one of the strongest and most prolific producers of a myriad of popular sitcoms, channels and social trends - giving birth of the overwhelming majority of Audaxia's internet memes and phenomenons. Casinos, nightlife and computer cafes bring throngs of revel-seeking individuals to major centers such as Belo Horizonte, Curitiba and Novo Joao. Drug use is rampant and the sale of drugs and sex contributes to Japao's status as a playground for Audaxia's most thrill-seeking adventurers. Officially noted as an absolute monarchy, the inefficiency, corruption and incompetence of the Medeiros line's civil servants is legendary. As a result - most daily affairs are managed at the canton level and the task of national defense/intelligence gathering is directly handled by the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces with minimal consultation from the ruling Monarch. ![]() Flag of the Japao Self Defense Forces (JSDF) Though universal conscription is mandated, a professional military corps is a large and contradictory aspect of society. Composed of career enlisted men and officers, the professional armed forces consists of a subculture within Japao's larger social structure. In contrast to the liberal nature and permissiveness of the mainstream, those in the professional military are sober-minded, conservative, hard-working and pointedly anti-drug. Most professional soldiers, sailors and airmen profess their loyalty first to their military head above their King - citing multiple failures of the State to address growing issues of moral decay, lack of effective law enforcement, growing corruption and the express need for developing civil infrastructure. ![]() Soldiers of the 2nd Japaoese Armoed Division on routine patrol in Belo Horizonte. The military has largely taken over most law enforcement and developmental projects within the nation of Japao, opting to use professional soldiers to police notorious red-light districts, drug alleyways, casino strips and rural areas. Army engineers are involved with the overwhelming majority of construction projects, being signifcantly more efficient and reliable than construction contractors funded by the state. Recently, a growing number of "security contractors" from Ignatz-based firms such as TetraVaal Incorporated (TVI) and the Contract Forces of Audaxia (CFA) have been seen operating within the nation alongside the professional military corps. Billions of Real-Yen have been thrown towards updating current military equipment and refurbishing reserve ordnance to 21st century standards. ![]() CFA representatives in Japao Edited by Ignatz, Mar 16 2016, 04:42 PM.

History Pre-Industrial ![]() Belo Horizonte, the Capital of Japao Traditionally a sea-faring and commercial race of people, the Kingdom of Japao has earned the distinction of being one of the oldest monarchies in the world. The Medeiros family has endured centuries of labyrinthine political machinations, social upheaval and technological change to earn the distinction of one of the most recognizable royal families in Audaxia; they trace their roots to "O Rei Joao I" - King John I - and his establishment of an independent kingdom from the then all-encompassing Empire of Zhao Lung following a relatively bloodless conflict in 900 C.E. Since its establishment as an independent nation, Japao's consecutive rulers saw to a golden era of exploration and trade dating from the twelfth to early seventeenth century C.E.; hundreds of Royal Charters were issued to a wide variety of enterprising explorers and merchants that effectively mapped most of the Eastern hemisphere. During this time, Japao's carracks crossed the high seas laden with exotic spices, precious metals and silks for exchange with the west. As the "gateway" to the East, the nation grew very rich by enforcing high tax rates on a variety of sea routes. Expeditions to the far West saw the formation of a lucrative slave trade and the mass forced migration of millions to the Kingdom's current borders. ![]() The Battle of Porto Verde, 1623 Military expansions by the Khanate in the 15th Century saw the fall of the Zhao Lung empire and the start of official conflict between Japao and Los Vatican. The first of several invasions by the Khanate occurred in 1562, in which a punitive Khanate expedition laid waste to the capital city of Belo Horizonte before departing back to the mainland. A second invasion - this time notably larger in strength and generalship - was attempted by the Khanate in 1623 with little success. In the Battle of Porto Verde, a vastly outnumbered force of Japaoese carracks succeeded in driving off Remak Khan's "junk" fleet with superior cannon and seamanship, albeit at the cost of much of the Royal Fleet. Japao would never recover the same naval prestige it had prior to Porto Verde, though it would retain most its wealth through a combination of sly political maneuvering and superb business decisions. Modern History The discovery of oil in 1923 within the Biscalis region effectively pushed the Kingdom of Japao towards a new era of economic prosperity and affluence. Heavy investment from outside companies resulted in the rapid buildup of an effective offshore extraction and refining infrastructure in the region, bringing billions of dollars into the already strong economy. Millionaires were built overnight and much of the oil revenues went directly towards improving the nation's infrastructure. Thanks in part to the sudden influx of foreign investors, then King Joao IV Medeiros successfully pushed for the complete legalization of all recreational drugs in 1943 and then prostitution in 1944 on the grounds of "reducing" the effect of organized crime in the nation. His reasoning - which was not without merit - was that an overwhelming amount of then powerful crime cartels would lose their monopoly on the black market to the two most stigmatized commodities in the region: drugs and sex. All prostitutes were required to submit to government taxation and health standards and the sale/use of once-illicit drugs became accepted social practice. The government would no longer need to waste resources on penalizing individuals for "social deviance" and actually benefited from additional revenues via these new "legitimate" business institutions. In addition to these benefits, enterprising Japaoese contributed significantly to Japao's reputation of being Audaxia's adult "playground" by developing huge swaths of once empty space into casinos, nightclubs, "dispensaries" and high-end brothels for "adventurous" foreigners and affluent citizens. This apparent boon, however, had the unexpected effect of significantly increasing substance addiction rates in the nation and contributing to human trafficking within the region. Japao's long-time rival - the Divine Khanate of Los Vatican - was directly affected by the Kingdom's liberal drug policies; over seventy percent of illicit drugs flowing into the traditionally teetotaler nation have passed through the Kingdom of Japao in some form. Human trafficking of rural Khanate women kidnapped by less scrupulous "entrepreneurs" invariably results in many being sent overseas to work in an assortment of nightclubs and brothels. The War of 1953 Tensions erupted between the Khanate and Japao on June 11th, 1954 following a massive oil spill in the Biscalis region. Several offshore drilling platforms run by Japaoese companies suffered a catastrophic failure due to lax government regulations and standards, spilling millions of liters of crude oil into the Southern Sea. Ocean currents deposited nearly all of the spill onto more than two thousand kilometers of of Khanate shores and causing untold ecological damage to the fishing livelihood of millions. ![]() The Battle of Ouro Preto, a Japaoese Centurion Tank In response, a Khanate expeditionary force of nearly three hundred thousand men invaded the Kingdom of Japao. Though Khanate forces initially succeeded in pushing deep within the nation, the military brilliance of the Royal Japaoese Army (RJA) halted the advance at the battle of Ouro Preto, persevering against the Khanate horde with masterful execution of armored defensive doctrine. Eight hundred of the RJA's Morelander-made Centurion tanks wreaked havoc on more than two thousand advancing Khanate T55 tanks with exceptional long range accuracy and gunnery skills, utilizing their familiarity with the landscape and the clever placement of their Centurions in "hull-down" positions on the high ground. A second armored thrust though the Khanate flanks routed the Horde, capturing three hundred T-55 tanks, tens of thousands of Khanate soldiers and a tremendous amount of military equipment/ordnance. It would be the single most devastating Khanate defeat in modern times and deterred invasion from the superpower since. ![]() Khanate POWs following the Battle of Ouro Preto |
