![]() The invites had been sent out over a week ago and Queen Sonia was now nervously expecting their arrival. Around the circular grass lawn stood members of the household guard ready to give salutes to any arriving representatives. Inside the grand hall in the West Wing a large circular table had been set up with each seat set with an identical folder, pen, notepad, microphone, flag and name holder. Bottles and glasses of water stood ready and a royal chamberlain ran a well trained eye over everything before satisfying himself that all was in order. King William and Crown Prince Richard, the Queen's two husbands waited with her on the Palace steps equally as nervous, this would be the first time they'd hosted a foreign delegation. Inside each folder sat a draft copy of the treaty that she'd drafted along with Prime Minister Aideen Sterling and Minister of Justice Aideen Sterling, they all doubted it would avoid the butchers knife but Sonia was at the moment hopeful. Draft Treaty OPEN TO NEGOTIATION AND EDITS OOC- Thanks to Ben, TU and Dave for checking through this. Now just turn up 16. "That's funny. If I recall, you deliberately persecute gays because of your religion. I don't remember killing anyone. Tell me, what was our last 'burning session'? Never? I thought so." |

Martin again appeared uneasy, "Religion can be a force for good that inspires people to do good in their communities, however some people will twist the messages within their holy scriptures to justify their wrongdoings. Religion is not evil, some religous people are evil, some are good, almost everyone is somewhere inbetween." |

"As a nation that has carved itself out through almost six centuries of war I can tell you in our case not a single one was caused by religion." Emperor Hans spoke up on behalf of his young leaders, "Our ancestors fought for land, yes, for pride, of course and for political control, obviously or a would not be sat here as Emperor looking after two young royals, so perhaps then if we're banning things that cause war we should ban these things also. In fact I can categorially say that ever war has been fought between armies, therefore as the common denomiator we should ban armies. The view I believe of the majority around the table is that religious conscience should and must be protected. Would you all not agree? As for Article 20 I believe several people have explained, it is not about which form of government a nation chooses but the ability of its people to have their voice heard, now should someone wish to redraft that treaty then put it forward." |

“Esteemed Delegates, please.” It was Aira Herendilde of Ascarenor who finally spoke up. She and the rest of the delegation from Ascarenor had remained quiet throughout most of proceedings. They, too, wished Article 18 ought to disinclude religion. After all, foreign religions were a plague that brought nothing but hate and fear-mongering. It was the belief among the Arda Tuluvans that these heathen faiths were set upon the world to test their resolve. “We are not here to discuss the tenants and merits of religions, nor their ideologies. We are here to discuss issues that affect each and every citizen of Audaxia.” She looked upon the Doge and then to the DEN delegate. “Neither are we here to debate political ideologies. We are the representatives of our respective sovereign nations; we should act in accordance due our station and not bicker among ourselves like barbarians.” Barbarians, indeed. All barbarians. They cannot even behave with a modicum of decorum. And they call themselves doges and emperors. Lady Herendilde thought to herself. “There is no need to redraft Article 18. Instead, I propose that certain nations who do not wish to include religious liberties ought to be exempt from the aforementioned Article, a simple amendment is all that is needed.” |

"In my opinion" This time it was Princess Kaia who spoke, "Permitting nations to pick and choose which Articles they follow is not truly a decleration of Universal Rights, nations may as well just legislate nationally. If we permit nations for example to be exempt from Article 18 why not permit them to be exempt from others? Is that what we wish to create a document fragmented where people pick and choose which rights apply to citizens like a person picking from a buffet?" |

"Perhaps" Queen Alison took a breath before continuing, "We should have to reconsider Article One if this is the route we wish to go down, a Pick n Mix charter." she took out her draft document, "Let me read it to you, Article 1 states "1. All sentient beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights." What we are suggesting is changing that to read "1. All sentient beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights unless they are from certain nations at which point some of these so called Universal Rights do not apply." Is that truly the message that we wish to send that it is ok in some nations to give people certain rights we call Universal yet in others deny them these rights? If so then I believe this meeting is a waste of time because we will not have created a Universal Rights charter, merely a list of options or suggestions." |

"That is precisely what I am saying, Your Highness. If this Conference wishes to see this Delcaration be inacted by its signatories then comprimises must be made. You would sacrifice all other rights for the sake of one to be superseded upon our respective nations? "Such is the nature of politics. This world is marred, Highness, some realities are what they are. But I believe this Declaration can be passed and most of the Articles will be upheld by all. But to ensure its success then exceptions or changes must be made." |

"The issue being that once we start permitting people to pick and choose where the exceptions are, then is it truly Universal Rights, we have heard from the majority around this table that wish the article on religion to be included, are we seriously asking the majority to give up the rights to please a minority and where pray is the compromise? For example look at the nation of Morheim, they have a history of being a refuge for people being religiously persecuted, had this treaty been around would that have happened? Possibly not, who is to say, without that article we are sending a message that it is ok to deny someone a basic right by simply using their religion as an excuse." the Princess responded once more. |
