Impressive First Impressions Positive and Memorable First Impressions Can Create Success As a self-published author, filmmaker, or musician, establishing a professional identity is key to building a personal brand. This is true in just about every arena because people "buy" the person before they buy the product or service the person is offering. The impression you make is critical to selling yourself, and they say you only get one, so here are a few tips to ensure that your first impression is always a success. Smile--And Mean It! It may seem simplistic, but your sincere smile is quite possibly the most important tool in your networking toolkit. Smiling shows you are friendly and open to meeting new people. Be Other-Centered Along with smiling, the greatest way to make a positive first impression is to demonstrate immediately that the other person--not you--is the center of action and conversation. Critical to showing your interest is asking--and remembering--the name of the person you've just met. Have a difficult time remembering names? Instead of worrying about what you're going to say next during an introduction--which is the primary reason people "forget" names so quickly--establish rapport by immediately using the name of the person you've just met. Concentrate while you do this and you will remember the name. Exchange Business Cards You never know when you're going to make a connection with a fan or potential resource, and a business card is an efficient and professional way to exchange contact information with those you meet. Make sure that the contact information on your cards is always up-to-date, including a working e-mail address, phone number, and website. Promote your book, DVD, or CD on your business card--an image of the cover, a sentence description, or a particularly favorable review is enough information to hook your audience. Finally, don't forget to ask others for their business cards, to show your genuine interest in the other person and to build your contact list. Maintain Strong Social and Professional Ties When you make a new contact, send that person a brief note recapping who you are, what you do, and that you enjoyed meeting him or her. Ask to stay in touch--this person could be a valuable addition to your mailing list or a good connection to other audiences. Never Miss an Opportunity Whether you're at the grocery store, gym, or with a group of fellow professionals or artists, always be open to the opportunity for an introduction. It takes all kinds of people to make the world go 'round, and many of them may want to learn more about your product. Help Others As the saying goes, "You can get everything in life you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want." Networking is a two-way street, and if you are open to lending a budding author advice or a leg-up, the gratitude you receive will only open more doors. By presenting yourself as someone willing to create a reciprocal relationship, you send the impression that you are relatable and caring. People want to buy from those they know, like, and trust. Sell yourself with a favorable first impression and a positive personality to match, and achieve the self-publishing success you desire. https://forums.createspace.com/en/community/docs/DOC-1003 |
