My lifelong dream has been to write… not just to write, to publish! So, following retirement from a teaching career, I set out to accomplish my professional goal. While self-publishing using Create Space requires a certain amount of effort, their (free) services provide guided, step-by-step procedures that allow any writer the pleasure of producing and selling fiction and non-fiction. The following five tips are designed to help you begin publishing your original work on Amazon, using Create Space and Kindle. One: Create the Material First, it's necessary to create a publishable piece. I have written romance novels and self-help books that are currently for sale on Amazon Books and Kindle. Several years of experience in writing, editing, and marketing have helped, along with a degree in English (Creative Writing). I started writing my first novel, published under a pen-name, twenty-some years ago and finished it a few months after retiring. Two: Publishing Non-Fiction My second book is a How to Knit guide intended for beginning knitters. Knitting is a favorite hobby of mine and I wanted to help others learn to knit. Writing an eBook has allowed me to share the art of creative handiwork online. Once I wrote the books, they had to be carefully edited before they were ready for publishing. Three: Join Create Space I set up my Create Space account in a matter of minutes. After logging in, I began the publishing process, adding each new title to my Bookshelf. Once the title was entered, the books were assigned an ISBN. The setup stage of publishing includes title Information, the ISBN, interior, and cover designs. Additional phases involve uploading documents, reviewing, and editing materials before completing the process. Four: Using Creative Elements One of the most enjoyable aspects of my new job, and one of the most difficult tasks, is uploading documents that are properly formatted to match the book size. I found an excellent article on-line that helped with formatting. After a few attempts, I was able to create files that were suitable for the paperback (and Kindle) format. The cover designs use different templates to help upload photographs into one of several cover styles. This feature allows you to review different designs before selecting a final version. Five: Distribution, Sales, and Marketing Following the setup, Create Space reviews the book and responds (usually) within a twenty-four hour period. In addition to customer inquiries, CS provides several excellent sales channels and pricing features. Once I proofed the final texts (hard copy and virtual formats) and approved them, they were immediately available through the Amazon Sale's Channels. (At this point I created eBooks for Amazon Kindle.) Create Space can be a wonderful resource when you follow these basic tips. I have found self-publishing to be a great way to develop my new profession, to sell novels and eBooks, and to enjoy the fulfillment of a life's dream!
