hi guys forgive me this may be a real stupid question but is this different to the skirmish game Gelfins setting up + how many models do you play with and wot are the differences between this and WM/IK/H :$
What we're taking about Cam is the Iron Kingdoms Role playing game. Basically you generate a character for yourself, and then you 'play-act' that character as the Game Master (GM/DM) puts you through combat and role-playing scenarios. Over the sessions that you play your character develops, gains experience (points), better equipment and so on. As you reach certain levels in experience then you 'level up' and gain new skills and abilities. You are part of an ongoing storyline that runs in conjunction to the War that we so actively participate in with our armies.
So you pick yourself a Faction/Nation to represent and decide whether you want to be a Gun Mage, a Warrior, a Rifleman, a Mage/'caster, etc and then you roll 3D6's for all the stats out of 18 max (we all wish for an 18 !!!), choose your skills get your starting money and spend some on weapons and equipment to keep you alive as you adventure across the Iron Kingdoms.
The only figurines that are used are for 3D combat purposes, so that everyone knows where they are in relation to the other players and the enemies. So all you need is a single figure model representing your particular character. If you have a look at the Iron Kingdoms pages on the PP website you'll see that the figurines are particular characters, each with their own name. When it comes to RPG figurines, I don't think we need to even restrict ourselves to the Factions or Clans of the Iron Kindoms, there are many fantastic companies out there that make wonderful gaming figurines, take Freebooter miniatures and Hell Dorado for instance. As long as you're happy with the figure and it fits the scale and look of the IK then it's pretty cool. Most often this one figurine will go through many small conversions throughout your campaign, as your character grows and changes sometimes the only way to represent this is to change the whole figurine. Some companies do a three stage set. 1st Level, 6-7th level, 12th level<. This is so that you can 'upgrade' as you go up in levels.

To answer SD:
The first session will probably consist of setting up the characters since all dice rolls need to be made around the DM anyway. We'll all need the info in front of us, and the right books available. I'm looking into getting the 3.5ed AD&D stuff, it be about 40 quid for all three. It takes a few hours to co-ordinate the whole thing. Before we even begin to think about characters we have to have a good look at what kind of story do we wanna play out.
This will help you to have some ideas about character choices and, especially, the classes that you choose to start with.
You have to have a bit of a 'future' plan for your character since they have Prestige Classes that you have to work towards. i.e. Gun Mage: You start as a pistolleer, pick up skills in quick draw, craft pistol and ammo, knowledge arcana. You have to be able to cast 2nd level spells, which means that you need at least 3 level of Spellcaster to even begin to qualify. So you switch classes at 2nd level and again at 4th, so now you've got 2 levels in pistolleer and 2 levels in Spellcaster. So you continue and add the necessary skills and Feats and abilities so that you can fulfill the 'dream' of becoming a Gun Mage.
On average it takes 10 levels to reach your chosen Prestige Class, so you need to think it out a bit since changing your mind half way through will see you with a mediocre character that's almost good at two things. You cannot have more than 3 Classes, and no one Class may be more advanced than any of the others by more than 2 levels or you incur an experience point forfeit (10%) per level seperated.
i.e:
3rd lvl Pistolleer
3rd lvl Spellcaster (Mage)
1st lvl Arcane Mechanic

I will not incur any penalties if my next level is in Arcane Mech. But if I take another lvl in any of the other two Classes, I will take a 10% penalty on my Experience gained. BECAUSE, you start to forget some of the stuff that you haven't been keeping up with.

If we get the Player guide then maybe we can copy the pages with the character Races and Classes so that those that are interested can get some ideas.
Don't forget to check out the IK website and the Buccaneer Bass website, the unoFISHial IK website. The Forums have an entire section as well, so go look.
For those who are now interested, know that it takes a little more commitment than 'just' gaming since if you don't arrive for a session, you create hassles for the DM and cripple the 'adventure party' since your skills are absent. The sessions need to be arranged and stuck to by all, or give plenty of notice if you can't make it.
War Gaming is all about YOU, but RPG's are about the GROUP. "There is no 'i' in group"
Keep the questions coming, but add suggestions as well please. B)
