I agree with you on the download stuff, I'd rather feel the heavy weight of the knowledge in my hands, more real that way. I have a lot of 3.5ed stuff that I brought over on disc, so I may be able to supplement us along the way. I've downloaded the IK Character sheets and spell list sheets, so we can reproduce them. We'll have to get at least MNom 1. for the IK monsters, but I'm sure we can get along with the monster database that I have, and get the Monster manuals as we can. The 3.5ed AD&D Monster manual is 10 quid new from Amazon so no problem there.
When it comes to characters (This is for all prospective Players) and your choice of character. It helps a lot to go with something that's close to home, stuff that interests and fits into your own personality.
i.e. I usually play a Bard, Thief, Scorcerer or Mage, or mix them up in multiclasses. These classes suite my way of playing. If you are more 'back-line' yourself then go for a ranged type character, one that's gonna fight from a distance or with sneaky stuff. If you are more aggressive or 'forward' then try for a 'tank' type character, i.e. Fighter, Barbarian, Ranger (melee orientated). Dwarves (Rhulic) and Humans make good fighters. Skarde and Iosans would make good Rogues, Scorcerers, Mages. Ogryn and Trollkin are tanks...fullstop. Bogrin and Gobbers are sneaky cowards, so the Rogue, Mech, Alchemist are good for them. Each Race will have classes that work better for them, and their racial advantages work to the advantage of the class.
When it comes to the IK, remember that there are many racial groups even amongst the humans, so each area may have special advantages to others. The Laelan people are intelligent and refined, so the Magical arts comes easier to them. The Khardic are more 'Spartan' and more martial. The Ordic are good seafarers, etc. Your secondary skills (Professions) are very important and may be the only means of making money outside of adventuring. It may also be the only way to get a better social rating.
This is something that we will work on all through the game, your reputation and social standing. So diplomacy and tact are good skills, so is intimidation and mis-information (bluffing).
Something that I've come across in many threads on the IK forum is that players gripe about the amounts of Gold they aquire, even through adventure. The wealth factor seems to be more downplayed than in AD&D. So using your money wisely and saving for that important magically/mechanically enhanced weapon is important. Thus a little planning will go a long way.
