Cool one Cammy, I must warn you tho', it's not easy playing a convincing woman, unless you're really quite in touch with your feminine side. But go for it, it'll make for a lot of roleplaying fun.
The magic-users only get light armour abilities, or they have to spend a long time learning how to cast in medium/heavy armour.
The spells can have up to three components. Verbal, Somantic, Material. i.e. Lightning Bolt: V-Shazam, M-4" glass rod, S-rub the rod through your hair, creating static and point with a flicking action, toward your target (while saying the Verbal part) So, whip out Glass Rod, rub thru' hair, point aggressively and "Shazam!" If you're wearing armour it makes all that very difficult, and so there's a chance that you screw it up and cause a 'misfire' possibly whacking a mate or the spell alters and becomes something you didn't want. Lots of Fun. (We once had a one armed Mage in our party, that was 'fun'!)
There are two kinds of Magic user, the Wizard/Mage (Arcanist) who learns their spells and commits them to memory. They need to take out time every day to learn any spells they think that they might need. Then there's the Scorcerer, who has a natural ability to channel the magical energy through themselves, converting it into the effect they want as it 'passes thru' them. Scorcerers don't need to learn their spells, but they get given a limited number of spell slots to use every day.( A level 1 spell costs 1 slot, a lvl 2 spell costs 2 slots, etc) They can cast any spells from the whole spell list for that level, but only so many per day.
So the Wizard/Mage gets more spells but they must choose them in advance (learning them in preparation for the next day's adventuring), while the Scorcerer basically 'recharges' thru' a bit of meditation, can use any spells available, but can't cast them as many times as the Mage.
For a bit of heavy magic related reading see Hypothesis of Arcane Physics. It's a very good read, Doug Seacat adds info, and it can help a lot towards your understanding of magic workings in Caen.
