Ability Points; Rolling up the NB Stat points

Hi Guys,
I’ve already had PM from Webwraith on Ability Stat points etc, so here’s the low-down.
We all do our Ability Stats on Saturday (Cam, we’ll make a plan).
There are two ways to acquire Ability Points, the classic, roll 3D6 method and it’s variants, and the Point Buy system.
The Roll-up methods are as follows:
Roll 3D6 for each Stat, reroll 1’s and any roll that totals up under 9, (we want average and up, not disabled or addled characters).
Now: With each level that you progress you get to roll for a number of things, primarily your Hit Points (how much pain you can suck up, before calling Uncle). Normally if you happen to roll a 1, well that’s how it is!
So I give the Players these options:
When rolling for your Stats:
1.You roll 3D6 for each Stat, you choose where they all go and when you roll for Hit Points each level…if you roll a 1, it sticks.
2.You roll 3D6 for each Stat, you choose where 3 of them go, the DM chooses where the other 3 go and when you roll for Hit Points each level…if you roll a 1, you get to re-roll.
3.You roll 4D6 and discard the lowest die, but you roll for each Stat in order and you can’t shift the numbers around, and when you roll for Hit Points each level…if you roll a 1, you get to re-roll.
4.Then there’s the Point Buy system.(You get a Re-roll for HP with this.)
We decide if you want a hard or easy campaign, and I issue you with between 28-32 points. You spend the points across the Abilities, using them all up. This ensures that all the characters have the same base beginning, but it’s really up to you where you put the points, the point buy table looks like this.
The nicest thing about the Point Buy, is that you can set up your Stats at home, take your time with them. You can’t cheat, I’ll just add up the points and catch you out.

So spending 1 point will get you a Stat of 9 and a Bonus of +0.
Spending 5 points will get you a stat of 13 and a Bonus of +2.
Because you have a limited number of points to spend, you can’t really go crazy on one Stat. Look at the Escalation from 15 to 16 pnts, etc.

These are two possible sets that I generated from 28 points, this gives you (+3, +2, +2, +1, +1, +0) as Bonus’
16 / 13 / 12 / 11 / 10 / 10
15 / 15 / 13 / 12 / 11 / 10
These are slightly more Max’ed Stats based on 30 points, this gives you (+3, +3, +2, +1, +1, +0) as Bonus’
16 / 14 / 13 / 12 / 11 / 10
16 / 14 / 14 / 11 / 10 / 9
These two are based on 32 points, this gives you (+3, +3, +2, +2, +1, +0) as Bonus’
17 / 14 / 13 / 12 / 11 / 9
16 / 15 / 13 / 13 / 12 / 9

If there is a solid vote for point buy then we all have to use it, so that no one character is unbalanced to the rest.
You get to add 1 Stat point every 4 levels, so remember that when planning those initial Stats. You’ll see when you look at the Bonus structure that there is a low and a high bonus number, i.e. 13 (+2), 14 (+2). So if you want an Ability to jump in the future, placing a high bonus number in the stat means that you can go up to +3 at 4th lvl - 15 (+3).
So it’s really up to you guys, I must say that both systems work very well, but the point buy has become popular.

This post is mostly for Cam's benefit.
The concensus was to roll 4d6 and discard the lowest, re-rolling 1's and any total under 9. You choose 3 placings, I choose 3 placings and you get the re-roll for HP if it's a 1.
So you'll have to roll with me at the club, but the whole process shouldn't take us too long.
