Current Night Info

The shattered corpse of a dormant city slowly stirs as life seeps back into it. It is a place where seeds of redemption now take root while a timeless struggle for supremacy begins anew. Beneath the rotted shell of the city, under the desperation and despair, lurks untapped power. Multiple factions of Kindred (and others) vie for control, and that power impatiently waits for those ambitious enough to grasp it. Welcome to St. Lawrence by Night

We are currently at maximum player population and will not be accepting additional players into the game until further notice.

Gaining and Spending XP

As you play the game, as you'd expect, you will generate XP. Everything, as ever, is up to the ST's discretion, but here are the guidelines you can expect.

- Each week in real life gains you 1 XP. This is the baseline that everyone gets as long as they're actively playing. If you're away and talk to the ST about it, we'll work it out, but you'll probably be fine. If you just disappear for days on end and you leave everyone hanging? Might be a problem. Respect the other players you share the game with; that's all we ask.

- The standard in-game day will last for 2 weeks IRL. This may vary at the ST's discretion, but that's the expectation. I'm not going to set an exact schedule for when days end, but that is the expectation. Talk to the ST with any questions.

- There may be times when we skip multiple days at a time in game rather than just moving on to the next day on the calendar. It will be made clear when we do that. When it happens, XP gain will be determined by the Storyteller for that case depending on the situation.

- Writing a good quality and decent length short story set in the World of Darkness (preferably in the more specific world in which we're playing here - past or present) will net you 1 XP, as well. I don't expect there to be any issues with either length or quality - we're all adults and talented writers, so respect your own work and your fellow players/readers and don't try to crank out hastily written crap or 100 word pieces to inflate your XP - it won't work the way you might hope it would. Please also make it something original - recounting your player's background/history isn't sufficient. Telling a story in detail from your character's past and engaging the reader in it? And maybe from a particular character's perspective? That's absolutely what we're looking for.

It doesn't have to be a masterpiece, but write something that people will enjoy reading, especially if it teaches us (and you!) something about your character that hasn't been fully fleshed out in the course of the existing narrative. Maybe during the game you made a reference to something in your character's past, but didn't get to explore it much. Put it in a story, get some XP. Exceptionally long stories may be broken up into pieces, but the breaks should occur at logical points in the story; don't just insert breaks because it looks long and you want more XP out of it. I'm not setting word counts or anything like that. Just use your discretion and best judgement. I've put lots of my own work in there to give you an idea of the kind of stuff I like to write and read. You don't have to write stories like that, but you're welcome to. It's up to you.

The max XP you can generate per week IRL with stories like this is 1. I don't want to give anyone the chance to write 10 stories in 1 week and suddenly have a flood of XP to spend.

Please post your stories in this forum here and let me know when you do.

- If your personal narrative for the in game night is particularly complex/compelling/exciting, etc. and/or if you display exceptional roleplaying, the ST may award bonus XP on a case by case basis. 2 XP will be exceedingly rare. 1 XP will be rare. The norm will be 0. Don't go fishing for this, but this will always be something I am considering. Know your audience.

- Certain things in game may result in some additional XP gains, as well, such as achieving a major victory, reaching a critical goal in the story, etc. These rewards will be given at the ST's discretion and will typically come as a surprise, but consider this incentive not to just screw around. Contributing to the plot is important, and you will be rewarded for it. Yes, XP will be given to groups who accomplish things as a group. You don't have to score the killing blow on the dragon or whatever to get the bonus XP. You just need to seriously contribute to the effort.

- There may be other reasons XP is awarded, again, at the ST's discretion.

- All XP awards will be made at the end of the in game night.

Rules for spending XP? We got 'em. Sorta.

- When increasing a trait, it would be good to have some narrative basis for the increase, though it is not strictly necessary. The more XP you spend on something, the more important it is for you to have some narrative justification for the increase. If you're going to level up Firearms, for instance, it would be advisable that you at least handles a gun at some point during your recent story or in your downtime. This will not be strictly enforced, but we're telling a story here. Respect the story and the fact that it should make basic sense.

- Retainers and similar do not increase any of their traits over time, as they are not the narrative focus of our story, though the Storyteller may alter their traits over time manually at his discretion as the story requires. You may, however, spend your own XP to advance traits for your Reetainers, if you so choose, though any increases must be justified to the ST and approved by the same.

- Once XP is awarded, please contact the ST with any requested spends within 24 hours of the XP awards if at all possible. Posting in your XP tracking thread is a good way to do this.
