Current Night Info

The shattered corpse of a dormant city slowly stirs as life seeps back into it. It is a place where seeds of redemption now take root while a timeless struggle for supremacy begins anew. Beneath the rotted shell of the city, under the desperation and despair, lurks untapped power. Multiple factions of Kindred (and others) vie for control, and that power impatiently waits for those ambitious enough to grasp it. Welcome to St. Lawrence by Night

We are currently at maximum player population and will not be accepting additional players into the game until further notice.

On the topic of extending the nights beyond 2 IRL weeks:

I'm all for extending nights when there's a lot going on and we just need more time to get everything in, but I've noticed a pattern wherein the first week, some players are slow to post (or sometimes don't post at all), then they get moving in week 2 and ask for an extension since they can't resolve any significant actions for the night in just a few days. I will help drive the plot however and whenever I can, but you guys have to help out with that and try to push toward goals/actions rather than being pulled. I don't want to drag anyone along with a story - that's not fun for anyone. So I'll ask you to manage your time accordingly, please.

This is not me being passive aggressive or trying to avoid a confrontation - you know who you are. This isn't designed to single anyone out, but it's something we need to address because we're all playing a game together, and considerate adults make sure that the game works for everyone who's playing. Beyond that, I am the Storyteller, and this is my job - to make sure everyone is having fun and that the game facilitates that. Yes, I will have days where I don't post much, just like anyone else. We're all human. But I do my very best to keep my lapses to a minimum and to communicate them when I see them coming.

While I understand that real life happens, I'm going to ask everyone to make a concerted effort to be somewhat more active during the first IRL week of the night going forward. Waiting a few days or a week to kick things off is severely stunting the story we get to tell about your character and those you interact with, and that's why we're all here. And if you're going to be gone for an extended period? Please let us know. There's a forum just for noting upcoming absences, even.

If you aren't sure how to get started (as yes, I tend to expect you to start things off by at least making your opening thread for the night), let me know, and I'll be happy to help however I can. But please do not wait around for me to tell you that you wake up. Of course you wake up. So get on with your night. If you need some help with forming a goal/direction, I'd be delighted to help, but you have to ask me or I won't know you need help. We're telling a story together, so we have to work on this together. There are a lot of you, and I have stuff to do in real life just like you do, so please meet me halfway here and do your part.

Extending the night is, in my opinion, happening too often, to the point that we need to consider just making a night last 3-4 weeks at this point as the norm. I don't particularly want to do this, but a handful of posts over the course of ~10 days isn't a lot to work with when you're trying to get something done narratively, especially in something that's interactive. Maybe the game isn't that much of a priority to some players. That's fine, we're all adults. But then understand, as an adult, that there are repercussions to those decisions, and your story suffering is the main one.

So in short, please be an active participant as often as you can, including in the early days of the in-game night. If your real life commitments are such that you can't contribute as much time as you'd like to the game, that's fine, we'll do our best to work around it, but please consider that A. there are other players you are playing with (myself included) that depend on your participation for this to work and B. it's extremely hard to do anything exciting with your character when your character doesn't do much because we aren't getting much information from them in the form of posts.

If we want to consider making nights longer, let's discuss it. I'm more than happy to discuss changing that as long as it's what's best for the game. But in general, all of us being engaged and committed to helping each other having a great interactive experience is going to be more effective. Or we become Danse Macabre and write 32 pages of prose at each other in a single weekly post, but that is not the direction I intend to take this game. If the Vox Populi is such that that is actually the preferred style, then that is fine, and I'll gladly let someone else be the Storyteller for that chapter of our adventure, as that's not a game style I care to run.

Really and truly, I want you all to know that I take my job as ST very seriously, and I sincerely want you all to have fun here. Why else would we be here? If you aren't having fun, I'm not doing my job, but at the same time, there are a lot of other people all with that same goal and their own perspectives, so please consider those people when you're examining your approach to the game.

If you can any thoughts, comments, questions, or concerns, feel free to post them here publicly or address me in private if you're not comfortable doing that.

This is directed at no one in particular unless you feel it applies to you.

In general, whenever possible and when it makes sense narratively, 1 post per day at minimum would be appreciated by your fellow players and storyteller. If you are posting less often than that on average and it's not due to travel/holidays/etc. getting in the way, please reassess your priorities and what you're intending to accomplish with this game. Engagement is key to what we're trying to do here.

This is not a hard and fast rule. This is a guideline. This in intended to give you a general idea of the intended pace of the game. If you're averaging one decent sized post a day, you're doing alright, though we'd love to see more. If you're doing less? Well, is the game just not that interesting to you? Or are you just not that concerned with your character accomplishing much during the night? Just be realistic with yourself.

The important thing to keep in mind is who you're going to be able to interact with. If you don't post much, I'm not often going to put you together with very active posters, as they'd be left waiting on you. Bear that in mind when you're wondering about how I group characters up narratively. The more active you are, the more people you'll get a chance to play with, and that IS why we're here (even if you didn't know that).
