Current Night Info

The shattered corpse of a dormant city slowly stirs as life seeps back into it. It is a place where seeds of redemption now take root while a timeless struggle for supremacy begins anew. Beneath the rotted shell of the city, under the desperation and despair, lurks untapped power. Multiple factions of Kindred (and others) vie for control, and that power impatiently waits for those ambitious enough to grasp it. Welcome to St. Lawrence by Night

Masquerade Status Score

Needless to say, maintaining the integrity of the Masquerade is more important to some than others. Regardless of how any individual feels about it, its overall affect on the city and game world that we’re concerned with is potentially very substantial. As Kine become more aware that the supernatural exists, many things can and/or will change, some subtle, some not so much. Generally speaking, however, those who wish to hide their true nature (not just vampires, mind you), will find their existence more difficult to manage as the Masquerade erodes.

Given that the main antagonist in this arc of the story is the Sabbat (who cares nothing for the Masquerade), and because it didn’t occur to me sooner, we are now introducing a new game mechanic to our game, and that is Masquerade Status. How will this work? I’m glad you asked.

We will represent the integrity of the Masquerade in St. Lawrence with a score on a scale of 0 to 100. At 100, mortal humanity is entirely unaware that the supernatural exists and walks among them. It’s a good time to be a hidden predator born of a supernatural curse at this stage. At 0, humanity knows without a doubt that the supernatural exists, and while they might not be able to wrap their collective heads around it, they won’t have much choice if they want to continue existing at all. And when they get together and decide they don’t want to be prey anymore? Well, no one expects the Spanish Inquisition!

But seriously, it’ll be bad news bears, I promise.

At higher scores, things like hunter/Hunter patrols and anti-monster initiatives will be rare. Supernatural activities will proceed mostly unhindered and humanity will turn a blind, oblivious eye to most things that are unusual. The consensus that the supernatural belongs in movies and fairy tales will remain intact, and mortal humanity will go about their business, unaware of the truth.

At lower scores, however, various factions who oppose the supernatural will become more prevalent and active in St. Lawrence, and humanity will begin to open its eyes to the truth that the supernatural world and their own are indeed one and the same. Humanity will withdraw in fear more and more, so it will be harder to hunt, and the mortal authorities will likely become more vigilant as they start to cast doubt on everything they once knew about being the top of the food chain.

So how will Masquerade Status change? Put simply, as things transpire that provide evidence for or reason to believe in the supernatural (such as seeing a vampire feeding, witnessing obvious Disciplines in use, observing any inhuman looking supernatural entity in its inhuman state, finding bodies drained of blood, blood banks getting robbed, zombies walking the street, people disappearing more often than normal, strange murders, cattle mutilations, unexplainable behavior perhaps driven by Disciplines, sudden changes in demeanor without apparent cause, etc.), the Masquerade Status score will go down.

Zombies attack Elysium en masse? That was a doozy. Lots of people saw that, and it’s hard to explain away, and it’s blatantly supernatural. That’s probably about a 25 point hit to the Masquerade’s Status score, just by way of example. Another example might be Mercedes killing a cop and draining him dry, though she DID slit his throat (after draining him). That would be a 3-5 point deduction from the Masquerade Status score.

So you’re probably wondering if there is any way to restore Masquerade Status. As a matter of fact, there is! After the Tremere chantry incident (probably a 20 point hit since they found the spider creature intact), the Tremere sent ghouls to site who used a combination of drugs, domination, and thaumaturgical relics to cover up what the Department of Homeland Security found. Mason and Alice helped a bit with their stories, as well. Primogen Brandt did his best to keep local law enforcement in the dark and distracted with the bombing at the Dominion. In any case, the efforts of the Camarilla to cover up this massive Masquerade breach probably restored 17 or 18 points because it was a thorough response. The same is being attempted after the zombie attach on the opera house, but that was bigger and more pervasive, and the concealment effort (playing it off as the filming of a zombie movie), while effective, was not as complete as it was at the chantry, so the score only recovers 15 points (it would have been less if not for David pitching in).

Additionally, every day (in game) that goes by will see the Masquerade Status score go up by 3, so as long as those who uphold the Masquerade can keep breaches to a minimum, time will help cover mortal eyes to the supernatural once more, as humanity doesn’t really want to know that there are truly things that go bump in the night.

The Masquerade Status for Sleeping Dragons will be set to 70 right after the time skip at the end of Act I completes. It’s up to you and the game how things go from there. Good luck!
