Making Edward Say "Bella Who?"

Before I Die is the book of the month for September, so lets get discussing! Feel free to add your own questions and discuss amongst yourselves, but lets try not to get too off topic. Question One: Tessa's friends all reacted differently to her cancer; Zoey by helping her with her list; her father denying it; her brother asking if they can go on holiday afterwards. Do you think these reactions are good or bad? If you were Zoey would you help Tessa with her list? Or deny it like her father? Question Two: Do you think that someone who is dying should turn inward and become self reliant or embrace life and try and do everything? Question Three: On a more personal note, what would be on your list if you were Tessa? What would you want to do before you died? |

Question One: I think it is good that Zoey will help her. Many people would feel weird or get a bit freaked out by helping her complete her list, ya know? I think it is bad that her dad just denies it. It will be that much harder when she dies and sets him up for depression. When he denies it, he tries to act like she is a normal teen with normal habits, but she isn't and it makes it harder on herself. I think it was a bit harsh of her brother to want to take a trip after. Question Two:I think that someone who is dying to embrass what is left of life! They can never come back to it and they only have so much time left on earth. They should make the most of it! Question Three: I would travel across the country and travel around countries, see the Effil Tower, parachute, bungee jump, swim with dolphins, be an extra in a film, tell someone the story of my life, sparing no details, learn to rollerblade, Put your name down to be a passenger on the first tourist shuttle to the moon, send a message in a bottle, ride a camel, fall deeply in love -- helplessly and unconditionally, learn to ball dance (properly), experience zero gravity, sleep under the stars, learn to juggle, rRaft through the Grand Canyon, Drive a convertible with the top down and music blaring, accept myself for who I am, scuba dive off Australia's Great Barrier Reef, go up in a hot-air balloon, attend one really huge rock concert, run to the top of the Statue of Liberty, kiss the Blarney Stone, make a hole-in-one, run through a corn field full of corn, and catch a ball in the stands of a major league baseball stadium. I know I have more, but I don't feel like getting my bucket list from where I hid it in my room. |

Question One: I agree with Vampire_kisses! I think Zoey did the best thing she could do in the situation by helping Tessa. Otherwise she would have just regretted it later. The easiest thing for Zoey to do would have been for her to just walk away and stop being friends with Tessa - but she didn't. So she was one of the strongest characters, in a different way to Tessa. As for her dad...denying it was about the worst possible thing he could have done. It just made it harder in the end. Her brother took it differently because he was young and found it difficult to understand. I think he missed out on a lot of his childhood because of Tessa's cancer, but overall he does love her and will miss her. Question Two: I think Tessa did the right thing by embracing life. A friend I have who read the book thinks that the author made Tessa want to have bannedword and do drugs to make a point and be a bit disturbing. My friend thought no-one would want to read the book if it was about a girl who wanted to eat an ice cream before she died. I don't think this was the point. I thought Tessa just wanted to be a normal person and live a longer life. She couldn't, so she had to compact everything she had ever thought about doing into a few months. Question Three: ^ You have a bucket list? Cool. Anyway before I die I would just like to live life to the fullest. I have tons of things, but if I don't get my blackbelt before I die I will be ashamed with myself! |

This is one of about six books that has made me cry. Excellent. Question One: Ultimately, I think that I would end up helping Tessa. But would I do it like Zoey did? Absolutely not. Even if Tessa didn't have much time left, her choices still effected the people around her. Take Zoey, for example--she met the guy who ended up breaking her heart and getting her pregnant because of Tessa's decision. (Though I have a feeling that this may have happened to Zoey somewhere down the line anyway.) Plus, even if you're dying, you can still get hurt, and hurt the people around you. Think of what could have happened the night Tessa decided to go after number one on her list... Question Two: I think that it depends on the person and their life up till then. If a person has done everything they want to do and is just tired, I believe that they should try to get closer to their family, try to live life slowly. A person like Tessa, however, should embrace life and live it to the fullest. You know how that saying goes: live like it's your last day. Question Three: Fall in love with my soulmate. Get married. Have children. See my grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Publish best-selling novels. Travel across Europe, including Ireland and Scotland. There are tons more, but those are a couple I've thought of. |
