Time to be productive! I'm just going to spill out all the thoughts I have/questions we should probably figure out. -What kind of time frame are we looking at? Modern day? Futuristic? Dystopian future? Recent history? Way far back? -Along the same line... Earth? New realm? -So, the powers in general. In my head they are called Bestowings. (Bay, I don't know if Sam's told you (or if I told you for that matter), but the main idea for this came from a story I had in my brain back in the early college years.) In my head, this is how they work: A Bestowing -some sort of magic gift/power- is granted to a child at a young age by creatures called Casters. In my story, they were supposed to be skills that would somehow benefit them in their life (eg someone being resistant to fire becomes a skilled blacksmith or a firefighter). Everyone assumed Casters knew the future and would grant Bestowings accordingly. But then you get to the idea of, well, did So-and-So become a blacksmith because it was his destiny and the Caster gave him the appropriate Bestowing, or do the Casters just grant Bestowings willy-nilly and So-and-So becomes a blacksmith because it just makes sense with his gift? Destiny vs Free Will and all that jazz. However, Sam and I were discussing the government being behind Bestowings. Maybe when every child is born, genetic testing is done to test for mental/physical abilities, and when someone is found to have a genetic pre-disposition for possible greatness, they are given a Bestowing (either by governmental experiments or by Casters -who are maybe forced to work for them?) Trouble is, you aren't guaranteed what kind of Bestowing you're going to get (or maybe not, we can decide that). When they work out, then the government has these powerful individuals that they can use for whatever purpose (law enforcement, education, research and development, exploration, whatever). Some people enjoy working for the government, some don't, especially since some people are never given a choice. So you've got individuals who are forced into a lifestyle they don't want, while others revel in the power. Some escape/quit/are let go from government work (when little Billy's Bestowing is to turn anything to the color red, the government has no need for him so he goes off to live a mundane life with this random-ass power that does absolutely nothing). So going along those lines, you have all sorts of different plotlines available. Overthrowing the government, obviously, trying to find meaning in your life, blah blah blah. We also discussed there being one individual whose Bestowing is to remove other Bestowings. So those people who hate their power for whatever reason try to seek him out, but s/he is kept hidden lest the person is abused. So yeah.... that's what I've got to contribute so far. DISCUSS! |

LOL, oh god, "The Almighty." Love it XD Anyway! As for a time frame, I personally have a preference for modern day. I was telling Sam last week I have a problem when it comes to writing things in other time periods and/or worlds. I get way too into the research... and it distracts me from the story. The site I had in high school with lady pirates never even got off the ground because I got too nit picky with the details and I kind of just gave up. So, yeah, I like modern day. It's easier. As for location, real city or made up city? Or is it going to span into other cities? Maybe for the sake of things not getting to convoluted, maybe we could just focus on one? And, yeah, Sam filled me in a little bit. I totally love the whole destiny vs. free will thing. I think there's a lot that could be done there... and I'm going to apologize in advance because the right side of my brain is severely dusty so I may not be much help when it comes to being creative and plotting anything... but I will try my best! But, yeah, the government being behind it is interesting... usually they're the ones trying to stop whatever's going on. Maybe it's a secret branch, like MI6 in James Bond. I'm going to leave this here and keep thinking... |

Ok, brainstorm time!!! ![]() I like the idea of modern day, I vote on keeping our world pretty standard to reality, aka we live in the USA, etc. But maybe a made up city? I had an idea that kind of ties in a few of the things mentioned, feel free to add, subtract and generally tear it apart - it's just a rough draft. So say that some millionaire invented a serum that gives a bestowing. He creates "ENTER GRAND COMPANY NAME HERE" and markets it to the general public, federally regulated of course for health reasons. And all bestowings are unknown at the time, it's a roll of the dice. Has to do with your genetic makeup and stuff. The only way to get a bestowing, is to directly buy one from GRAND COMPANY or one of its distribution centers. The distribution centers are where any and all Casters work; out of choice, not force, but if your ability is Casting, then you pretty much want to work for GRAND COMPANY as it will be a very affluent job choice. All bestowings must be registered with the company. About half of the population have a bestowing, the upper-middle class and upper class as it's expensive. This would be where the running comes in - because let's face it, all good stories have running. You're either running to something or away from something. We can have a little of both; a couple of things going on at the same time. -Some characters are attempting to find the rumored "de-casters" to remove a bestowing that they don't want. That government list isn't public so it's just a rumor to the public and of course the company and govt don't want people to know if there is someone out there that can take your powers away - price would drop real quick on bestowings. -Some people, very few, like .05% or something (though obviously our own charries ;)) who have a bestowing end up developing more than one ability. These other abilities show up later, sometimes years later. And would obviously be quite hard to control at first; you have to learn all over like with your first gift. These secondary abilities are not limited to one, some people have developed several. In fear of having "supervillians" out in the world, the company (with the backing of the government regulators) snatch these people up quickly. Our story could start with the company figuring out that some genetic anomaly causes the multiple bestowing issue, although they don't know WHY it causes it, just that it does. So they are left to simply go down their list of registrants and grab the ones that have/will develop multiple abilities. For what purpose? That can be left up to interpretation - kill them, lock them up, study them, etc. What's your thoughts? |

Oh gosh, can you imagine some creepy guy walking down the street in a trenchcoat. "Wanna buy some Bestowings?" and he opens up his coat to reveal a bunch of needles and vials. It's an amusing image in my head. Street-bestowings. Not nearly as good as the real thing, but a lot cheaper. I bet there are folks who 'claim' to have higher quality Bestowings for a higher price. Supply and demand, bitches! Oh god, what if the serum uses Caster blood? Also, what if there are government-run schools/facilities where folks are encouraged/forced to attend to learn how to use their bestowings? Gov't isn't going to want a bunch of folks with new powers running around all willy-nilly without being able to use them properly. The common folk aren't permitted to attend (for their safety, obviously - untrained Bestowings inside an all that). |

Ohh street bestowings - that sounds way dangerous. And would totally happen! I like the idea of gov't schools for the bestowed, either one year required to learn how to control your powers or maybe just highly suggested. And if you're going to pay that much for a bestowing, you'll probably want to attend/have your kid attend anyway. So it wouldn't need to be forced, necessarily. |

Okay, real quick, the word "bestowed" totally jumped out at me. So how about that for the site name? Assuming it's not already taken. Anyway, all of the above sounds fascinating! I like the idea of a company behind it, too. It's very LuthorCorp. My only concern is why they would want half the public having super powers. I get that they want shit loads of money... but it just seems like it wouldn't go over that well. Too chaotic. I feel like there has to be a legitimate reason behind it. Like, okay first thing that comes to mind, in Repo! The Genetic Opera there's a worldwide organ failure going on and then suddenly this company pops up called GeneCo and they sell healthy organs to people and if you don't make your payments... the repo man comes and takes them back. Anyway! Not to completely rip off of other stories, but like I said, there should be a need for the bestowings. Maybe they're a form of protection? Like, the world has gone to shit. skyrocketing crime rates, etc. Maybe there's "supervillains" of sorts who started dishing out bestowings first and GRAND COMPANY somehow jacked the formula for themselves to combat it.... I mean, not to get too dystopian... but there should be something bad going on besides someone out there who can remove the gifts. And since this is primarily for the wealthier people, like you said, there could be street deals going on. Maybe it's a group. They give out bestowings for something else other than cash, such as services. Like, "Oh yeah, you can have a power... but you have to work for us and stop the bad guys or be the bad guys...pick up my dry cleaning... whatever lol" Kind of like an Oliver Twist situation. I do like the "rolling of the dice" thing and that it depends on your genetic makeup. Maybe there's some black market deals going on in the side where instead of having them removed, they're trying to change them into something cooler. I don't know, I kind of just word vomited. Hope it actually made sense, haha. I like how my ideas lean more towards "comic book" like story lines. XD Edited by Bailey, Dec 24 2014, 01:05 AM.

Hhhmmm good point. I guess it my head it was kind of like the movie Surrogates, where a company creates it just to "better humanity". Maybe at first it was for people who were handicapped, like couldn't walk. But then it got blown out of proportion as the $$$$ came rolling in. I think I like the idea of having a non-perfect world better though, gives an overarching story. Oh! Oh! I got it! What if the company was originally headed by two people, one goes supervillian and splits, so the other is sorta forcibly taken over by the govt to combat him. Could even be used as encouragement: Want to be a superhero? Get a bestowing and attend our Bestowed University for one year to train in your powers and become the superhero you always wanted to be!" Totally get people's attention and they wouldn't even care (at first) that they were working for some secret Sector 7 type govt agency. |

I like the idea of the two people! So their original intent was to better humanity, such as helping people with disabilities. I can even see them going so far as thinking this is the next step in human evolution. And maybe that could still be tied into the non-perfect world? I don't know, like they're doing their thing with creating this formula/whatever the hell it is and then shit happens. Maybe they piss someone off in the process thus dooming society? Or if magic is involved, maybe they fuck something up while they're trying to get it right. I also dig the university. LOL, our Star Fleet, Hogwarts, Xavier's Academy... etc. Edited by Bailey, Dec 24 2014, 01:41 AM.
