Harley Race [c] vs. Giant Baba [PWF Championship], AJPW (February 11th, 1983) Baba's odd body structure always amuses me. He looks like he has the skeletal structure of a t-rex, being really tall, but with frail short arms. Japanese commentary rules. It is both highly entertaining when they freak out, and forces you to actually pay attention to the ringwork for a story instead of having them just tell it to you. Slow start. 80s Baba isn't really that good. He's almost immobile, which on top of his weird frail and yet tall body, makes him awkward. So him controlling Harley and working the arm is ridiculous. That being said, he's got this lovable grandfatherly quality to him, so he's easy to root for. Also, his offense is a slow Big Boot and the aptly named Baba chop (think Great Khali). Harley didn't sell the arm much at all. He takes over with a Piledriver, and works the head and neck. Baba's selling is non-existent. They have a finishing run and yeah. Race's selling was good. Baba wins with a Reverse Bulldog. Not a good match. *3/4 Jerry Lawler/Randy Savage vs. Rick Rude/King Kong Bundy w/ Jimmy Hart [No Disqualification Match], Memphis (September 17th, 1984) Savage hits his dive on Rude early on, and him vs. Rude is amazing. Lawler vs. Rude also rules. Rude bleeds. Basically, they try to keep Bundy down on the floor and kill Rude. Savage trying to choke out Bundy with the ringside rope is fantastic. He gets in though, and it breaks down hugely. Awesome chaotic fight. The chair shots suck, but it's the 80s. RUDE FUCKING THROWS A TABLE AT RANDY SAVAGE IN THE CROWD! Savage has awesome KO selling after this. The table is put back in, AND THEY PUT IT ON LAWLER UPSIDE DOWN AND BUNDY STANDS ON IT! Looks brutal as fuck, since it's this thick ass blue wood table. Lawler hits a Piledriver on Rude and the ref counts BUT BUNDY SPLASHES THE REF! Savage hits Bundy with a flying axe handle off the top. Another ref runs out, but Hart pulls him out before 3! Savage hits Rude with a Back Suplex and the first ref slowly counts. Both men's shoulders are down, but Rude gets his arm up just before 3 to win. *** Dick Togo vs. Masato Tanaka, Zero 1 MAX (September 30th, 2007) Togo coming out to "Insane in the Membrane" is always great. This not immediately being a huge fight angers Dick, so he throws Tanaka out and chucks a table at his face. HE THEN HITS A HILO FROM THE RING TO TANAKA ON THE TABLE! And Japan and Memphis have the same size of tables, so it looks painful as fuck. This one breaks though, and Togo throws the table parts at him. Tanaka gets a nasty cut on the side of his face that adds a lot to this. He makes Dick bleed too, but he doesn't have the force of Dick, so it's not as nasty a cut on Dick's head. He does get pretty violent though, and Togo's selling rules. Togo makes a comeback and hits an awesome Flipping Senton. It settled into more of a bombfest after this, but it's these two, so it all looked good and there wasn't much bad stuff. Maybe could have had some stuff trimmed. Togo's counter of the Sliding D into the crucifix pin and then a Crossface was great. Togo also invents a one-arm Straightjacket Crossface, which looks AMAZING. Sliding D ends it and Tanaka wins. ***1/4 |

Harley Race [c] vs. Mil Mascaras [NWA World Heavyweight Championship], AJPW 9/11/1980 This kinda sucked. Race does these hilarious wobbly sells for Mascaras flying headbutts that don't really connect at all, and it looks like the fakest shit ever. They have an alright crowd brawl and Mil has a good Plancha. It gets better when Race takes over, since his offense actually looks good. They brawled again, and it went to a double DQ. Good Harley showing. I will now refuse if I see any more Mil matches. *3/4 Randy Savage w/ Angelo Poffo vs. Austin Idol, Memphis 5/14/1984 From commentary, I gather that Idol put Randy's dad in a Figure Four and broke his leg. So Randy jumps him with one of Angelo's crutches to open it up. And yet, somehow in all of this, Idol is the babyface, which is a shock to me, as I've mostly seen him as a heel vs. Lawler. Some really great angry Savage brawling as he beats the shit out of Austin. Idol eventually fights back and has some awesome punches too. Savage takes a super brutal and realistic looking Flair bump into the corner. Idol gets the Figure Four to win. Really great 5 minutes. **3/4 Jerry Lawler vs. Randy Savage [Steel Cage Match], USWA 1993 As entertaining as this was in WWF, this is a much better pairing when Lawler is the face. Cage Match is sort of misleading with the Memphis Cage. It's a cage, not set on the apron, but set on the floor, about as far back as the HIAC cage is set. Not on the level of their 80s feud, but it's 10 years later, so that's not surprising. Good Savage control seg. Lots of great Lawler selling. He starts to come back, but Sherri climbs over the cage, and gets in. She hits Lawler for a DQ. Fucking really? DQ in a cage match? No wonder your promotion fucking died. Awful. **3/4 |

I was gonna do some 1988, but the Superstars pack never finished and I can't torrent at school. So uh...why not dig this up? This is now a cover all so I can review some AWA/Other NWA/Random stuff that looks interesting too. I will take reasonable requests of stuff I haven't seen before, but no dailymotion. But first, I'll try and go through the previously posted requests, at least which matches are still on youtube. Kerry Von Erich vs. The Punisher, USWA 1989 The quality on this is horrible. Fits the match quality, since it's pre-good Undertaker in a mask and post-prime Kerry Von Erich. So yeah, pretty terrible, and it's mostly Kerry's fault. Lots of botches from Kerry and moments where they both seem lost. Kerry wins with a backslide. *1/4 PG-13 vs. RNRX is down, as is the Malenkos in ECW tag. Tito Santana/Stan Hansen vs. Shane Douglas/Don Muraco, ECW (August 8th, 1993) TITO COMES OUT TO "LA BAMBA"! AMAZING! "The Fabulous" Shane Douglas has a terrible ring to it. Stan Hansen is still basically in his prime, since he was still putting on amazing matches in AJPW in 1993, so he's the best guy in this. Theoretically, that is. He never really gets in, and there's too much Muraco and Tito, who is not giving a shit. Muraco is decent enough, but clearly not giving much of a shit. Luckily, it's only 7 minutes. Hansen hardly gets in before the end. AND THEN WITHIN 30 SECONDS OF THAT, MURACO BREAKS THE TOP ROPE. AND THEY HAVE TO RUSH TO A FINISH. OH COME THE FUCK ON. Eddie Gilbert and The Dark Patriot come out to attack for the DQ. *1/2 Eddie tries a fireball on Hansen, but he moves and it hits Dark Patriot as the credits roll. Terry Taylor vs. Jake Roberts, Mid-South (February 11th, 1986) This was very simple, but real good shit. Two babyfaces, but Roberts was a big time heel once. A lot of matwork with a competitive feel building, and Taylor hits the Fivearm, but Roberts rolls out. Later on, Jake hits the DDT, but Terry's foot is on the bottom rope, and the ref has to tell Jake he didn't get it. Jake is PISSED, and misses a knee lift. He turns around into an inside cradle, and Terry wins. *** Tully Blanchard vs. Ricky Morton, Eden, NC (1998) TULLY WAS AWESOME HERE WTF. Huge corner bumps, some killer European Uppercuts, etc. They have some great matwork too, and this is completely catching me off guard. Tully has awesome cheating and arm work. Morton is solid and doesn't look as bad as he has in other of his post-prime matches, but this is mostly Tully's work. Morton refuses to sell the arm though, and the finishing run is a little rushed. Tully gets a pin in the ropes in the corner to win. **3/4 Dusty Rhodes vs. Bobby Eaton [Steel Cage Match], NWA (February 1988) This was about 7 minutes, and mostly Bobby Eaton bumping, but Bobby Eaton is an awesome bumper, so it was good for what it was. Bobby has a lot of awesome near escapes, but eventually, Dusty catches him stuck on top of the cage. He hip tosses him off the top to the mat, and then meets him getting up with a Bionic Elbow off the top for the win. **1/2 Arn Anderson [c] vs. Dusty Rhodes [NWA Television Championship], NWA Pro (September 9th, 1986) Classic Arn/Dusty work here. Arn stooges and bumps a lot. Dusty does his stuff well. Dusty initially attacking the ankle of Arn was an awesome receipt for how the whole feud began. Arn eventually goes to the knee, and it's Arn fucking Anderson working a limb. I won't say he invented the shit, but there's a reason working a limb gets associated with the Andersons. Dusty's knee selling is great, and the hot crowd helps a ton. Dusty's bad knee cuts off his first comeback, and allows Arn to take over again. Dusty makes a final comeback, and it's awesome. Arn tries to use a chair when the ref is down, but Dusty cuts it off and hits a DDT on a chair to win the title! ***1/2 |

Arn Anderson vs. Manny Fernandez, NWA World Championship Wrestling (April 6th, 1985) Ole does commentary, and does the most amazing job getting Arn over. Manny has some solid work on the knee of Arn early on. Arn sells it like the motherfucker that he is. Arn then works the arm, and has tons of cool stuff. Manny makes a good comeback, and sells the arm well. Ole comes to ringside to give Arn advice, but Manny hits him, so the Andersons attack him for a DQ. *** |

Fit Finlay vs. Dick Togo, EWP (October 7th, 2011) I still can't believe this actually happened. It happening in a mostly empty gymnasium in Germany makes it even cooler. When it's two underground G.O.A.T. level guys like this, I want it to be in a nearly vacant grimy setting. Togo coming out to "Insane in the Membrane" is totally fantastic. Togo has taped ribs. Finlay obviously rules with the matwork, and Dick is no slouch either. Finlay does his thing and Togo tries to work the ribs or knees, but has trouble finding an opening. Togo cheats for an opening, and takes over with knee work. Finlay's selling is great as always, and he has some really cool hope spots. Not like you normally see, with a few punches thrown, but where he grabs a limb and tries to do something, but Togo panics and goes to the eyes to cut it off. Great slugfest at the end and Finlay wins with the Tombstone. *** Ric Flair/Arn Anderson/Ole Anderson vs. Dusty Rhodes/The Rock n' Roll Express [Steel Cage Match], NWA (October 28th, 1986) This is in Japanese commentary for no real reason. This was fun and all, but also kind of disappointing. I mean, it wasn't bad, it's Flair vs. Dusty and the RNRX vs. Arn and Ole. Those are really good matchups, as are the 2nd tier ones like Flair/Morton and Arn/Dusty. But they spend half the match getting the cage over and having the Horsemen bump around, which would be fine if the match wasn't only like 10 minutes. Once they got going though, it was great. Morton was obviously a really good face in peril. Morton pins Ole with something, but the camera wasn't focused on them, so we miss the actual ending. Fantastic work, NWA editing team. **3/4 |
