WWF Tag Team Champions: Tony Atlas/Rocky Johnson, Since 11/15/1983

Vince McMahon and Gene Okerlund are your commentary team. Weird seeing/hearing Gene at the booth instead of in the back. Even weirder is Vince promising us some great PRO WRESTLING action. They announce that Dick Murdoch and Adrian Adonis have formed a tag team that will debut tonight.

Match #1: Tony Atlas/Rocky Johnson vs. Dennis Stamp/Jerry Valiant
It looks like Stamp IS booked! The tag champs look good. Johnson is really smooth in the ring, and Atlas does power stuff well. His trunks also say "GET DOWN" on the ass. The jobbers are jobber-tastic. Shitty punches from Valiant. This got to a point where it went on way too long for a showcase match, at least 5 minutes. Atlas wins with a press slam and a splash.
*1/2

Match #2: David Schultz vs. Ken Jugan

FUCK YEAH DR. D! He is such a prick here. Dominating the kid on the mat and then forcibly teabagging him on the mat while yelling at fans. He also has good forearms. Dr. D wins with the Tombstone.
*3/4

Match #3: Hulk Hogan vs. Bill Dixon

Hogan comes out to "Eye of the Tiger", and it rules. Hogan does matwork and it is so weird. It's good, but just really odd. He has a good Jujigatame. Hulk Hogan has a good Jujigatame. What am I even typing? He wins with a slam and the Legdrop.
*1/2

At ringside, Gene and Vince interview the owner of the local TV station. They talk about how this show is going nowhere. LOL.

Gene then brings out Hulk Hogan for an interview and asks about the $300,000 battle royal on 2/10. He says every time he comes here, he gets a great reaction and he got his first victory in the WWF tonight and he has his sights set on that battle royal, and then he wants that shot at the WWF Champion, which is what he's trained for all his life.

Gene brings out Dick Murdoch and Adrian Adonis next. Adonis says they are the North/South Connection and they're after the Tag Titles. Murdoch says this state makes him sick, and he's mad that their match is the main event because they have to wait even longer to get the hell out of this state.

Gene brings out Atlas and Johnson next. Johnson says this is their home away from home and this is their kind of town and they love representing them as champions, and he has the best partner he could ask for. Atlas says they're both in the battle royal on February 10th and there's no use shouting about it, because they'll do it again in the ring.

Match #4: Big John Studd vs. Jimmy Jackson
This sucked asshole and went on forever.
1/2*

Match #5: The North/South Connection vs. Terry Daniels/Kevin Collins

Great squash. Leave it to Dick fucking Murdoch to deliver. Awesome punches, violence on the floor, etc. Adonis was good too, but Dick Murdoch is clearly going to guide this team. Everything he does looks painful as fuck. Adonis wins with a Sleeper.

Generally speaking, I'm not going to hunt down full shows of jobber matches like a lot of the TV at this time is, but if I don't have it in the 1984 pack from XWT Classics and it's important or a real match, I will try to find it.

Bob Backlund vs. Sika w/ Capt. Lou Albano & Afa, Championship Wrestling (January 7th)
This is more of an angle than anything, but it was well done and important. He can't get started due to the guys on the floor, so he goes to the back, AND HE BRINGS HULK HOGAN OUT WITH HIM! After about a minute of stalling after this, Afa and Albano attack Backlund in the ring for a DQ.
1/4*

Hogan comes in for the save, and he and Bob Backlund run off the Samoans.

In the back, Gene interviews Hogan and Backlund. Hogan thanks Mr. Bob Backlund and the WWF for bringing him back. He says he's a new and different Hulk Hogan than he was last time, and he can feel Hulkamania is already running wild, and it turns him on, brother. Well there you go.

Match #1: Eddie Gilbert vs. Rene Goulet

This goes to a 20 minute draw at 19 minutes. I love what I've seen of Eddie Gilbert. Being a huge Jimmy Jacobs fan, the idea of a tragically short guy who got his break with a ton of charisma and a great booking mind for the business obviously greatly appeals to me. But pure babyface Eddie Gilbert is new to me. I enjoyed the matwork early on. Rene controls with basic cheating and Gilbert's selling rules. He keeps hanging up Gilbert on the ropes, building to Gilbert returning the favor and then coming back. They go to the draw then.
**1/2

Match #2: Swede Hanson vs. Paul Vachon

God, this sucked. Just pointless awful clubbering. Swede wins with an elbow drop.
1/2*

Match #3: The Invaders vs. Mr. Fuji/Charlie Fulton

Good showcase for the Invaders. They are good generic 80s faces. Arm drags, leapfrogs, crossbodies, etc. Fuji's stuff looked good. Fulton is basically your quintessential jobber on offense. Invader #1 has a good hot tag but then it fell to shit when Fulton botched taking a sunset flip. #2 then hip tosses #1 onto Fulton for the finish.,
**

Match #4: The Iron Sheik [c] vs. Tito Santana [WWF Championship]

Good, but not great. Tito controls with your basic babyface stuff, ar mdrags, headlocks, dropkicks, etc. He does it well and crisply, so I'm alright with it. Sheik has a good control seg, but it is not long enough at all. They do some stuff and Sheik brings a chair in. He shoves the ref away and then knocks Tito into the ref. Tito hits the Flying Forearm, but the ref is up and DQ's both men.
**1/2

Tito runs Sheik off post-match.

Match #5: Don Muraco [c] vs. Salvatore Bellomo [WWF Intercontinental Championship]
DON MURACO IS A FAGGOT. This actually ruled, and did a great job establishing Muraco. Muraco is awesome at bumping and stooging. His offense is probably his third best in-ring attribute, but it was good enough. Sal bumps well, but doesn't have a ton of charisma or anything, so they really complimented each other well. Muraco wins with a sunset flip out of the corner.
**1/2

Match #6: Bob Backlund vs. The Masked Superstar

This was shockingly great for how simple it was. Power of TMS vs. technique of Backlund. Headlock vs. Bear Hug, they build it around reversals of each move into the other, and it fucking works. Masked Superstar then works on the arm to stop Bob's headlock. Some great stuff on the arm and Bob's selling rules. It's the 80s though and this is aborted before a finish. They fight on the floor and Superstar slides in at 9 to win by count out.
**3/4

Match #6: The Haiti Kid/Tiger Jackson vs. Pancho Boy/Dana Carpenter

MIDGETS MATCH! Entertaining stuff. MIDGET AIRPLANE SPIN! Everything rules. THK and Tiger won.
**

Match #7: Andre The Giant/Jimmy Snuka/Tony Atlas/Rocky Johnson vs. Sgt. Slaughter/The Wild Samoans/Samoan #3 w/ Capt. Lou Albano [Best of Three Falls]

Weird to have a 2/3 Falls match be over in 10 minutes. Sarge's bumping during this was the best part, but he sort of just disappeared after the first fall. This is generally acceptable, but nothing important or great really happens except for Sarge. Classic send the people home happy house show main event. Samoans beat Rocky with a double headbutt to go up 1. 2 minutes later, Snuka pins Samoan #3 with the Splash off Andre's shoulders. They do some more stuff and Andre beats Afa with sitting down on his chest.

The best part of this show? PAT PATTERSON IS DOING COMMENTARY WITH GORILLA!

Match #1: Tony Garea vs. Jose Luis Rivera
As is becoming usual for these cards, the first match is your basic matwork match. I enjoy it. Everything looked good and realistic and was smooth. Garea wins by rolling through a Crossbody into a cover.
**1/4

Match #2: The Invaders vs. Mr. Fuji/Tiger Chung Lee

This went to a 20 minute draw, which was probably unnecessary. Invaders did their fun basic babyface offense again, and the heels bumped and stooged well. I again enjoyed Mr. Fuji's offense. Very Orient Express-esque in how measured everything was, which makes sense, since they were maycabe Fuji proteges. Got dry when the Japs took over. Both Invaders had good hot tags. They work the legs of the japs, but it goes nowhere before the time expires.
**1/4

Pat Patterson can actually pronounce his s's in 1984. Worthless.

Match #3: The Masked Superstar vs. Chief Jay Strongbow
Thus blew. Strongbow is severely past his prime and out of ring shape. Superstar isn't nearly as good here as he was vs. Backlund on 1/21. They spend all match with CJS going for the mask and then Superstar gets a clothesline to win.
*1/2

Match #4: Sgt. Slaughter vs. Ivan Putski

Slaughter is just the best, but this wasn't much. Awesome stalling and then bumping for Ivan's generic power stuff. Picks up when Sarge takes over, but that is not long enough. They do the same finish as Backlund/Superstar on the last show, and Sarge wins by count out.
*3/4

In the back, Gene is with Paul Orndorff. He says Bellomo will feel the Piledriver tonight, and he's been concussing everyone left and right and he wants some real competition.

Match #5: Paul Orndorff w/ Roddy Piper vs. Salvatore Bellomo
Hold the fuck on. He has Piper in his corner, and Piper's not the one cutting the promos? Fuck that shit. Awful. Paul stalled for like 3 minutes here, and it ruled. Paul has a great snap on most things he does, so this was a good showcase for him. Really dragged on though, 14 minutes was way too long for what was just a showcase. Piledriver ends it.
**

Match #6: Don Muraco [c] w/ Capt. Lou Albano vs. Tito Santana [WWF Intercontinental Championship]

Great match. Lots of good holds early on, and holy shit, Tito has awesome forearms. He does a great job of making a headlock interesting and awesome, but then they go on too long with this before Muraco takes over. His control seg is really fucking great though. Everything looks brutal and Tito is a fantastic babyface seller. He has some awesome right hands to come back and it turned into this awesome stiff fight. The ref calls it a double DQ when he can't break up the fight in the corner and it spills to the floor.
***

They get pulled apart post-match.

Match #7: The Haiti Kid/Tiger Jackson vs. Poncho Boy/Dana Carpenter [Best of Three Falls]
This is basically the same as last night, only with two falls. Same comedy spots, interactions, etc. The faces win in TWO STRAIGHT SON. MAN UP.
*3/4

In the back, Gene interviews Freddie Blassie and the Iron Sheik. Blassie says they signed to fight Bob Backlund, not Hulk Hogan. Sheik then cuts a promo in Arabic and says that means, Hulk Hogan is not an Olympic Champion like him, nor did he beat Bob Backlund fair and square. He says Hogan is big, but then Gene cuts them off and says they're out of time.

Match #8: The Iron Sheik [c] w/ Freddie Blassie vs. Hulk Hogan [WWF Championship]
This is a good 6 minutes. Hogan has some fun pieces of offense before Sheik takes over. He does the basic stuff and puts on the CAMEL CLUTCH TO MAKE HIM HUMBELL! Hogan stands up out of it, which is a HUGE deal, and he rams Sheik into the corner. Hogan gets the Legdrop and wins the title! This might be important.
**1/4

In the back, Gene interviews Hogan. He is ecstatic and says Hulkamania is really running wild now and it turns him on. He says all he asked was for the entire WWF to get behind him and he would bring it back to the USA, and he feels the energy of the 25-30,000+ people here behind him. So he's just never been good at telling the truth, ever. Andre congratulates him and says he's proud of him. Putski and Rocky Johnson also congratulate him and Andre pours champagne on him.

Posted Image

Match #9: Jimmy Snuka vs. Rene Goulet
This pretty much just happened for 3 minutes. The Goulet who was good on 1/21 is absolutely gone, as he was awful here. Snuka wins with a Crossbody.
3/4*

Match #10: Andre The Giant/Tony Atlas/Rocky Johnson vs. The Wild Samoans/Samula w/ Capt. Lou Albano

Apparently Samoan #3's name is Samula. There you go. Basically just the match from Philly, but without Sarge's bumping in the first few minutes. Not much overall. Andre beats Samula with the sit down splash.

Match #1: The Masked Superstar vs. Bob Boyer

Good TMS squash. Nice matwork, and then all his offense looked good. One of those guys who is the definition of solid but unspectacular. He wins with a Swinging Neckbreaker.
*1/2

Match #2: The North-South Connection vs. Jose Martinez/Craig Carson

Another great Murdoch/Adonis squash. Lots of fantastic violent Murdoch moments. Adonis had some good stuff too, but yeah, it's Murdoch's show. Murdoch wins with the Brainbuster.
**

Match #3: Jimmy Snuka vs. Paul Vachon

Vachon is horrible again. Goes on forever and is terrible, despite Snuka's individual spots looking good. He wins with the Superfly Splash.
3/4*

Gene brings out the North-South Connection and says they're next in line for a tag title shot. Adonis says he and the redneck are destroying everyone they face and they're amazed those guys had the guts to put the belts up.

Gene brings out Andre. He says he's winning the battle royal, and he's bigger than John Studd is. He brings on Hulk Hogan and he says the energy level gets higher and higher every time he comes back to the WWF and says The Masked Superstar will feel Hulkamania soon. He says he's in the battle royal too and also wants Studd, but if it comes down to he and Andre, they'll find out who the better man is, and they shake hands.

Gene brings out Mil Mascaras next. FUCK YOU. NOPE.

Match #4: Jerry Valiant vs. James Burke
This was like 10 minutes and Valiant spent like 8 of those minutes putting on a lazy chinlock, and just sitting there in it. He then wins with a shitty Half Crab.
43/poop

A video airs on Jimmy Snuka winning 1983 Wrestler of the Year.

Match #5: Big John Studd w/ Roddy Piper vs. Jerry Riggs
Piper is an awesome piece of shit manager yelling at the jobber, but this was still another shitty Studd squash.
1/2*

Gene interviews them in the ring. He asks about Hogan calling out Studd and Piper says Hogan is an idiot who has nothing going for him but his hair and he's already losing that. Hey, this might become an important issue.

WWF Championship Wrestling - 2/4/1984:

WE GO NOW TO THE DEBUT OF PIPER'S PIT AND PAUL ORNDORRF IS THE GUEST! YES!

He thanks him for coming here and says he has an open invitation for any WWF wrestlers to come in his Pit, but Mr. Wonderful was the only man with enough guts to do it. He compares him to the current Champion, Hulk Hogan, and there is no comparison. He says Hogan is living it up but Paul lives a clean life and he cannot wait until he wins the WWF Title. Paul says he admires Piper too and says he has a body almost as good as his, and he wanted a man with brains, and Piper is that man. They shake hands and Piper says he is a role model and a credit to the wrestling world and they hug.

$30,000 Battle Royal, St. Louis (February 10th)
Most of the important people are here, along with some jobbers. 18 men in all. Mostly clubbering, but there's some fun spots from Fuji and Masked Superstar. Studd keeps going to the floor to bide his time. It gets down to Hogan, Andre, and Stuff. Hogan almost has Andre over, but Studd pushes them both over to win the match.

WWF Championship Wrestling
February 11th, 1984
Allentown, PA

Match #1: Andre The Giant/Tito Santana vs. Rene Goulet/Paul Vachon

This wasn't listed, but it was fun in the usual Tito manner. Tito vs. Goulet matwork is most of this match, and it's good. Vachon cheats to take over for like 30 seconds and then Tito gets Andre in. He does a few headbutts, but then tags Tito back in and throws him into a Crossbody on Vachon to win. Vachon is the worst jobber they have, by far.
*3/4

Match #2: David Schultz w/ Roddy Piper vs. SD Jones

Good squash for Dr. D. During an advertisement on commentary, they say Sarge has been getting many cheers lately, which is good. Schultz wins with an elbow off the middle rope.
*1/4

Match #3: Eddie Gilbert/B. Brian Blair vs. Bill Dixon/Ken Jugan

Good babyface showcase. Gilbert and Blair do solid arm drag/dropkick/crossbody stuff. Blair beats Dixon with an Abdominal Stretch cradle.
*1/2

While running down a card for LA that I don't have available anywhere and thus won't hype up, Gene mentions that Tito Santana has won the Intercontinental Championship in Boston today. There is no footage of this title switch, unfortunately. Which is a shame, since the first Tito/Muraco match is currently sitting as the 1984 MOTY. They have other matches though. Muraco and Lou Albano come on and they say all these title matches are supposed to have tape of them happening and he hasn't seen any tape of it. He says he's not saying he's a thief, but you know what? Hey, Tito's a thief, just like the rest of his people, and he snipped the clips so he can say he beat Muraco, when they both know it was a fast count and he was robbed, and now just like Tito's backseat of his car is filled with hubcaps, he's also stolen his title belt. AMAZING!

Match #4: The Iron Sheik w/ Freddie Blassie vs. Steve Lombardi
Good 90 second Sheik squash. He got pretty brutal at points. Great Backdrop Driver, and he wins with the Camel Clutch.
*1/2

Sheik grabs the mic and says IRAN NUMBER ONE!

Coming back, Sheik is leaving and Sgt. Slaughter comes out for his match. THEY HAVE A STAREDOWN AND YELL AT EACH OTHER! FUCK YEAH! Blassie breaks it up though and gets Sheik to the back.

Match #5: Sgt. Slaughter vs. John Callahan
Too short to be truly great, but had some good stuff in a minute before Sarge wins with the Cobra Clutch.
*

Match #6: Tony Atlas/Rocky Johnson vs. Israel Matia/Bob Bradley

Basic power stuff for the tag champions. Their routine has grown old after 2 or 3 of their matches.

I have 3 matches out of 8 available for this, but with the exception of Mr. Fuji/Tiger Chung Lee vs. Gilbert/Garea and Atlas/Johnson vs. Piper/Muraco, everything I actually wanted to see or is featuring actual name guys from the WWF at this point is on dailymotion.

Tito Santana [c] vs. The Iron Sheik [WWF Intercontinental Championship]
They do more matwork here than in the January match, which for me, makes it better. Sheik keeps getting mad, until he works on the back. Good work on the back and Tito's selling rules. He keeps going to the back injury on his comebacks and it stops him from truly coming back. Tito has an awesome series of punches to come back eventually, and they go to a double count out. Between the DDQ and the DCO on the last two Philly shows, I assume they're building to a final match which Tito wins. Good booking if that actually happens.
**3/4

Hulk Hogan [c] vs. The Masked Superstar [WWF Championship]

This is the original grainy version, so you get Hogan coming out to "Eye of the Tiger". He gets a RIDICULOUS ovation coming out. The crowd keeps going nuts for like 2 minutes before they get barely quiet enough for the announcer to introduce the two of them. This is a fun 10 minutes. Superstar is thrown off by not being able to control with power as he's done in his matches before this. That's basically the point of this, establishing Hogan by having him overpower maybe the #3 most powerful guy in the WWF behind Andre and Studd. Their offense was basic, but it all looked good. The ref catches Superstar trying for use of brass knuckles and he DQ's him.
**1/4

Hogan gets the knuckles and hits Superstar with them. He tries to demask him, but Superstar escapes and flees.

Andre The Giant/Jimmy Snuka vs. Sgt. Slaughter/David Schultz
This is more of an angle than anything, but it was well done. Schultz bails early on and Slaughter works most of this 3-4 minute match. Sarge has some awesome bumping near the end. Schultz and Sarge have miscommunication near the end and Sarge tags him in. Dr. D refuses and he walks out on the match! SARGE GOES AFTER HIM AND BEATS THE SHIT OUT OF HIM! YES! Dr. D bails for a count out!
*1/2

Sarge gets in the ring and Andre and Snuka offer their hands, and Sarge takes the handshakes, now a babyface.

The Invaders vs. Roddy Piper/David Schultz

Some really amazing Piper stalling and bullshit throughout. There isn't much of an opening, but it gets Piper over big time as a scumbag cowardly heel. When they do get moving, it's pretty fun. The Invaders are fun again, and with them pissed off, they throw good strikes. Piper had some awesome punches during his control seg too. Invader II has a fun hot tag and yeah. They hit their finish of a Hip Toss onto the opponent, but Dr. D comes off the top with a knee to the cover behind the ref's back and Piper rolls on top to win.
**1/2

Tito Santana [c] vs. Don Muraco [WWF Intercontinental Championship]

Really good matwork early on. Tito control on the arm, and Muraco cheats to get out of it. He throws hands, but his arm is hurt, so it hurts him and allows Tito to fight back with forearms! AWESOME PSYCHOLOGY THERE! He then goes back to the arm. Also:

Patterson: Tito really wrestling like a champion here
Gorilla: He is a champion
Patterson: I know, he's really wrestling like one
Gorilla: No, I'm telling you, he's really a champion
Patterson: And he sure is wrestling like a champion

Muraco finally gets distance after a headbutt. Muraco has a really great and brutal control seg. Tito hits the Flying Forearm out of nowhere and Tito falls caught in the ropes, but he's outside the ring, so the referee counts it. He gets loose at 9, but Tito wins by count out.
***

In the back, Vince interviews Hogan. He says he didn't sleep last night and he was hanging and banging in Venice Beach, and he was so pumped about MSG and being the WWF Champion. The thing on his mind is Paul Orndorff and tonight, Paul is stepping into the combat zone of wrestling, Hulkster's Pit, which is what they're gonna rename MSG. Hogan just invented CZW, holy shit.

Hulk Hogan [c] vs. Paul Orndorff [WWF Championship]
Good basic stuff early on. Another match, like the Superstar match, designed to put over Hogan's strength. Paul had a solid enough control seg. Strange structure as Paul does a stalling segment during Hogan's comeback and then they sort of start from scrach again. Paul then goes to the back and is counted out.

Oops, forgot this.

Sheik is in the ring before a match with a jobber, and Sgt. Slaughter comes out. He gets in Sheik's face like last week, and they go back and forth arguing. Sarge says not to dare fly that flag and invites him to try and hit him, but the referee makes Sarge leave.

The Iron Sheik vs. Ken Jugan, Championship Wrestling (February 18th)
Good Sheik squash, once again. Sgt. Slaughter watches from the entrance fans chant "WE WANT SARGE!" Sheiky baby wins with the Camel Clutch.
*1/4

Gene goes up to Sarge, and asks what's going on. Sarge tells the people to listen up and says he knows through his career, he's called a lot of people maggots. But he can say right here to everyone here and all of the world, that Freddie Blassie and Iron Sheik ARE THE BIGGEST MAGGOTS OF THEM ALL! AND HE'S HAD IT RIGHT UP TO HERE WITH THE BOTH OF THEM! He says governments don't fight and die, it's the people, HIS BOYS, that do the job, and he challenges Sheik to a match next week!

Sheik and Sarge both come out for the match, AND THEY WAVE THEIR FLAGS IN FRONT OF EACH OTHER AND REFUSE TO LOOK AWAY! Sarge goes to salute his flag, AND SHEIK THROWS THE REF OUT AND ATTACKS SARGE! He loads his boot up with something and kicks Sarge in the head to beat him down. Blassie gives him a belt and Sheik stomps on Sarge's sunglasses and hat. He whips Sarge with the belt and Sarge's selling is amazing. SARGE GRABS THE BELT TO STOP HIM, BUT HE KICKS HIM AGAIN WITH THE LOADED BOOT! HE WHIPS HIM IN THE FACE! Sheik and Blassie leave, and Sarge tries to lunge for them, but he collapses, and referees come out to help him.

AMAZING angle. I want to see Sarge kick the shit out of him now.

The Iron Sheik w/ Freddie Blassie vs. Eddie Gilbert, Championship Wrestling (March 3rd)
Only 1:45 or so, but Eddie is a great jobber and makes Sheiky baby look awesome. Sheik has some good matwork before he lays the boots in, and then he wins with the Camel Clutch
*1/2

Post-match, The Iron Sheik spits on Eddie and then gets on the mic and says he spits on Gilbert just like he spat on Slaughter AND JUST LIKE HE SPITS ON AMERICA! SGT. SLAUGHTER RUNS OUT AND HE TACKLES SHEIK! FUCK YEAH! Sheik and Blassie run to the back, and Sarge gets back in to help Eddie up. He gets him helped to the back and then gets on the mic. He says he hopes Sheik can hear him, and he's been ambushed and wounded a lot overseas but he's always fought his way back, AND HE DECLARES WAR ON THE IRON SHEIK! He then leads the crowd in the Pledge, and it is amazing.

Match #1: Paul Orndorff w/ Roddy Piper vs. Rocco Verona

Good squash. Nothing special or remarkably violent, but everything looked good. The Piledriver ends it.
*1/2

Match #2: Tito Santana vs. Israel Matia

Good babyface squash, as usual. Tight arm drags and locks and what not. Awesome Flying Forearm off the middle rope for the win.
*3/4

Match #3: Greg Valentine w/ Capt. Lou Albano vs. Jose Luis Rivera

JLR is apparently undefeated, so this is a big deal that Valentine totally dominates him. Some awesome elbows from Greg. Rivera took some awesome bumps, and Greg wins with the Figure Four after a minute of great leg work.
**

He refuses to let go for several minutes, and Rivera is stretchered out.

MEAN GENE INTERVIEWS:

-Mr. Fuji doesn't like Slaughter standing up for America and tells an awesome story of killing a Marine as a kid and stealing his watch
-Orndorff asks how he looks and Gene asks why that even matters. Paul says he's the only person who deserves to see how good Mr. Wonderful looks. Amazing logic.
-Andre The Giant says a lot of stuff, most of it unintelligible and about The Masked Superstar. He says he'll unmask him after he beats him, because to do it before would be a DQ. I had no idea WWF was under lucha rules regarding masks.

It is now time for Piper's Pit, and his guest is Tito Santana. He says Tito is pretty smart, which is impressive since Latinos are usually on the slow side, occasionally flat footed. Tito says when his people get opportunities, they prove themselves. Piper says that's a poor excuse for their people not being able to make it, and Piper says he hasn't even beaten anyone yet and he's sitting there like a big shot. He says he just won this belt last Saturday (so this was taped before the 2/18 & 2/20 shows), and he'll fight anyone to keep this belt. ARRIBA! Piper says it's a shame the champion can't have an intelligent conversation, and he leaves.

Match #4: David Schultz w/ Roddy Piper vs. Steve Lombardi
Another average Dr. D squash.
*1/4

Post-match, Gene interviews Dr. D and he calls out Hogan for a title shot and says he's only champion because he's never fought him. He says he'll beat him to death on live TV and Hogan's a coward.

Match #5: Tony Atlas/Rocky Johnson/SD Jones vs. Ron Butler/Charlie Fulton/Goldie Rogers
The jobbers took awesome awesome bumps for team black power. Atlas eventually beats one of them with a press slam and then a splash.
*1/2

MORE GENE PROMOS:
-Dr. D cuts another awesome promo. He says he did some checking and he heard a lot of Irish people were on Hogan's ancestors boat and that's why he wants to be in Boston to fight him. He says he might find him a nice Irish woman that night after he wins the strap and says Hogan has thin hair like a woman.

WWF Champion: Hulk Hogan, Since 1/23/1984
WWF Intercontinental Champion: Tito Santana, Since 2/11/1984
WWF Tag Team Champions: Tony Atlas/Rocky Johnson, Since 11/15/1983 - LONGEST REIGNING CHAMPIONS CURRENTLY

WWF Championship Wrestling
March 24th, 1984
Allentown, PA

Match #1: The Wild Samoans w/ Capt. Lou Albano vs. SD Jones/Steve Lombardi

During this, Gene refers to Lombardi as the brawler from Brooklyn. Awesome foreshadowing. This is a fun squash. Afa beats Lombardi with the Samoan Drop.
*1/2

Match #2: Paul Orndorff w/ Roddy Piper vs. Angelo Gomez

Another quality Mr. Wonderful squash. Tight matwork to begin, and then lots of hard elbows and he wins with the Piledriver.
**

WWF UPDATE:

-FUCK YEAH
-Vince introduces video of the recent Slaughter/Sheik issues
-Clips air from what looks like a fancam of Slaughter leading people in the Pledge
-Vince plugs the new WWF Magazine

Time for some interviews with Mean Gene, promoting the next show in LA (which is not taped :( ):

-Orndorff is up first and insults Tito Santana and accuses the WWF of a conspiracy to keep him away from titles, but he will be the Intercontinental Champion.
-Sgt. Slaughter comes in next and says he'll finally get Sheik all to himself
-Blassie comes in and says he's got Tiger Chung Lee to destroy that wetback Mil Mascaras. Wonderful!
-Sheik comes on and yells about Slaughter and Los Angeles, and I cannot make out much of what he is saying but he ends by walking off and yelling IRAN over and over. He then storms back on and says he's going to kick Slaughter just like he kicks that lazy German. Wat.

Match #3: The Invaders vs. Charlie Fulton/Tony Russo
Another fun Invaders squash. They make with a lot of high flying and lucha stuff. One of them hits a somersault off the top for the win, a lot like Eddie's usual Hilo, but off the top.
**

Time for Piper's Pit! His guest is Andre the Giant, and this cannot end well. Piper slows down all his words since he doesn't know if he speaks English. Piper says he can dumb down the questions if he wants, since he gets the "big body, tiny brain" thing. He asks if John Studd has slammed him and Andre says never. Piper asks again, so Andre asks if he understands English. Piper says he could probably slam Andre, given 5 minutes, and Andre stands up. He holds Piper up in the air by his shirt, so Piper takes off his shirt and runs away. Andre leaves, and Piper comes back on. He says if Andre wants a fight he's got one and then in a classic Piperism, "YOU DO NOT THROW ROCKS AT A MAN WHO HAS A MACHINE GUN!"

Match #4: Greg Valentine w/ Capt. Lou Albano vs. Tony Garea
Fun 2 minute squash. Valentine ducks a Crossbody and then drops an elbow for the win.
*1/2

Match #5: Salvatore Bellomo vs. Ron Shaw

This was whatever. Sal wins with a Crossbody off the top.
*1/4

NEXT WEEK: Backlund vs. Tiger Chung Lee

The 3/25 MSG show wasn't taped as a whole show for whatever reason, but this match showed up on a Roddy Piper Coliseum tape at some point as in on youtube:

Roddy Piper/David Schultz vs. Andre The Giant/Jimmy Snuka, MSG (March 25th)
Not a great wrestling match, but they told an enjoyable story. Fun Piper and Dr. D stooging for Andre in the first half, AND THEN PIPER HITS HIM WITH BRASS KNUCKS! ANDRE GOES DOWN HARD! He bleeds and they keep working on it. Andre is helped to the back, and Snuka demands it continues as a handicap match. Hot crowd helps a lot and Snuka does his stuff well. They beat on him a bit, but Andre comes back out with his head bandaged up. He cleans house and Piper and Dr. D bail out, so I guess that's a count out.

WWF Championship Wrestling
March 31st, 1984
Allentown, PA

Match #1: Tito Santana vs. Mike Powers

Tito carries the jobber through matwork for a bit and then wins with the Flying Forearm.
*1/2

WWF UPDATE:

-Clips air of Sheik beating a jobber
-That's it. Okay then.

Match #2: Greg Valentine w/ Capt. Lou Albano vs. Francisco Vasquez
Another good Valentine squash that was just too short at only 2 minutes. Figure Four ends it.
*1/2

Match #3: Bob Backlund vs. Tony Russo

Usual awesome Backlund squash. Lots of awesome amateur stuff, and he wins with a backslide.
*3/4

MEAN GENE INTERVIEW TIME:

-We're now promoting an MSG card on 4/23, which is probably taped
-Greg Valentine and Lou Albano say this time, Greg will decisively beat Bob Backlund
-Tony Atlas, Rocky Johnson, and Ivan Putski cut a promo. They're supposed to be cutting a promo on Piper's stable, but Tony Atlas just keeps yelling that it's his birthday

Match #4: Paul Orndorff w/ Roddy Piper vs. Santiago Rios
You can tell things are starting to change in the WWF, as there's a lot more 1-2 minute squashes on the show and more interviews than there were in January. Another fun Paul squash in which he gets really brutal. Piledriver ends it.
*3/4

It is now time for Piper's Pit, and he has Terry Daniels on. He is now in a Marine uniform as part of Slaughter's Cobra Corps. Piper talks about how drill instructors are stupid and asks why if Slaughter is so good, why he isn't serving in the military. He calls the army nuts for risking their bodies and Daniels says he's proud to be a part of the Cobra Corps.

Match #5: Bob Orton w/ Roddy Piper vs. Lee Wong
Some nice arm work from Orton before he starts trying to end it. He wins with the Superplex.
*3/4

Match #6: Roddy Piper vs. SD Jones

This actually gets almost 4 minutes, so yay. Piper wins with a Swinging Neckbreaker.
**

Match #7: Ivan Putski vs. Frankie Williams

This was what it was, shitty Putski squash. He wins with the Polish Hammer.

Tony Atlas/Rocky Johnson [c] vs. Mr. Fuji/Tiger Chung Lee [WWF Tag Team Championship], Philadelphia (March 31st)
Well, this sucked. Nerve holds. Lots of lazy, nobody moving around, blatant resting nerve holds. The faces got in, but then immediately went to facelocks and shit and refused to actually clean house. They won with a press slam. Cannot wait for Adonis and Murdoch to take the belts.
3/4*

Tito Santana [c] vs. Greg Valentine w/ Capt. Lou Albano [WWF Intercontinental Championship], Philadelphia (March 31st)

Good stuff, but it could have been better. Valentine has some awesome work on the knees once he takes over. Tito's selling is really awesome, as usual. Constantly holding the knee, unable to really run, etc. Unfortunately, he then just sort of stops working on the knee and forgets it. They have a good fight, but it goes to a 20 minute draw.

Hulk Hogan [c] vs. John Studd [WWF Championship - Steel Cage Match], St. Louis (April 6th)
This is from a Coliseum tape, and only about 5-6 minutes of it are shown, which is probably for the best. Studd isn't exactly a good wrestler. Hogan bleeds and sells pretty well. Some nice struggle over the door at points. Hogan kicks Studd off when he's crawling after the Legdrop, and he gets out to retain.

WWF Championship Wrestling
April 7th, 1984
Allentown, PA

Match #1: Tony Atlas/Rocky Johnson vs. Johnny Ringo/Tony Colon

Another subpar squash for the champions, apart from an awesome Rocky flurry of punches. Atlas wins with the press slam.
*

WWF UPDATE:

-Jimmy Snuka was named WWF Magazine's WOTY for 1983
-A highlight video airs on Snuka

Match #2: David Schultz w/ Roddy Piper vs. Jose Luis Rivera
Good 2 minute squash. Rivera is a fun jobber, and Dr. D wins with the elbow off the middle rope.
*1/2

Match #3: Sgt. Slaughter vs. Charlie Fulton

Under a minute, so they couldn't really do a great squash or anything. Sarge wins with the Cobra Clutch.
3/4*

Sarge then leads the crowd in a USA chant and the Pledge.

GENE INTERVIEWS:
-This time, it's a Boston Garden plug, which will not make the air, so fart
-Bob Backlund says he still feels like a champion, but he wants the belt back
-Tito says he'll do his best to hold onto the belt against Tiger Chung Lee. That shouldn't be a problem

Match #4: Bob Orton w/ Roddy Piper vs. Tonga Kid
Really fun 2 minute squash. Tonga had some nice jobber babyface offense before Orton began killing him. Superplex ends it. I'd love to see Orton in a 3-4 minute squash to see what he can really do.
*3/4

It is now time for Piper's Pit, and his guest is Ivan Putski. He shits on his flexing and muscles and says he's heard him singing at the bars after shows, and it's awful. In response, Ivan starts singing in Polish and yells POLISH POWER!

Match #5: The Iron Sheik w/ Freddie Blassie vs. Lee Wong
Only a minute, so not that great. HE only gets one awesome throw and then puts on the Camel Clutch to win.
3/4*

Match #6: The Wild Samoans w/ Capt. Lou Albano vs. Tony Garea/B. Brian Blair

This actually gets 6 minutes and is a real match! Garea and Blair are fine as the technically sound but unexciting lower card babyfaces. They try to work holds, but cannot contend with the savage nature and power of the Samoans. They then have to start outmaneuvering and outsmarting the Samoans. They end up getting pissed and it breaks down into a brawl with all four men in, so the ref throws it out.
