This is some manner of a 24/7 or Classics on Demand special where they set up a tournament using their gigantic archive of footage. Scott Stanford says that The Rock won last year. PLAY-IN ROUND: Match #1: The Big Bossman vs. The Brooklyn Brawler [Venice Beach Bracket - Play-In] WWF Superstars (3/9/1991) Bossman squash. Most Bossman squashes from his face run go about *1/2, so this was more of the same. Bossman wins with the Bossman Slam, and is now the #8 seed. *1/2 Match #2: Al Snow vs. Test [Miami Bracket - Play-In] Las Vegas Street Fight - WWE RAW ROULETTE (10/7/2002) Ton of fun. Total nonsense Hardcore Title style match, which Al is really amazing at, as it's one of the only times in his career that he's been actually entertaining. Al does the fantastic bowling ball spot and then he hits Test in the face with the bowling ball for the win, and he gets in the tournament! **1/4 Match #3: Larry Zbyszko [c] vs. William Regal w/ Jeeves [Minneapolis Bracket - Play-In] WCW Television Championship - WCW Clash of the Champions XXVII (6/23/1994) This was wonderful. Regal starts out with a really brutal offensive of European Uppercuts and forearms, and Larry actually makes a pretty hot comeback. Really really hard fought exchanges. Like, they want to wrestle and have some great exchanges of holds and throws, but it's mixed up with some fantastic hate-filled fights. Exactly what you think of when you think of a William Regal match. Jeeves helps Regal reverse a Sunset Flip into his own pin and he grabs the ropes for the win. *** Match #4: Kama w/ Ted DiBiase vs. Duke Droese [Parts Unknown Bracket - Play-In] King of the Ring Qualifying Match - WWF Superstars (5/27/1995) Son of a bitch. This was pretty horrible, and the highlight was Vince's overexcited commentary, as always. Kama wins with one of the worst Double A Spinebusters ever. 3/4* Edited by Big Tuna, Mar 13 2012, 07:53 PM.

FIRST ROUND - PART ONE: Match #1: Bill Goldberg [c] (#4) vs. Kevin Nash (#5) [Venice Beach Bracket - 1st Round] WCW World Heavyweight Championship - WCW Starrcade 1998 (12/27/1998) This is fine enough. I have a soft spot for Goldberg, and he had some neat little sells here. Cool idea where Goldberg tries his finishing combo too early, and Nash is able to take over as a result. This is hardly a bad match at all, it's just pretty uneventful until the end. Spring Stampede 1999 is clearly their best match together, unless I forgot some Nitro match that ruled. Everyone knows the finish, etc. Nash wins to move on in the tournament. **1/4 Match #2: Hulk Hogan (#1) vs. The Big Bossman (#8) w/ Slick [Venice Beach Bracket - 1st Round] WWF at Madison Square Garden (1/23/1989) This is a generally good classic Hogan match. Bossman bumps really well and the hot crowd helps it a lot. Hogan handcuffs Slick to the ringpost early on, and keeps going out to the floor to mock him and slap him. Hogan is also the first to cheat and BBM unlocks Slick when he takes over. They do stuff, Hulk Up, etc. Hogan tries to use the nightstick, but shoves the ref away and Bossman leaves, BUT BOSSMAN WINS BY DQ! YES! CINDERELLA STORY BEGINS! **1/2 Match #3: Booker T (#3) vs. Lex Luger (#6) w/ Liz w/ Liz's New Tits [Venice Beach Bracket - 1st Round] WCW Nitro (1/24/2000) This was a 5 or so minute Luger match in 2000, so this sure fucking occurred. Booker looked pretty great though, as usual, and did a good job making this not totally worthless. Stevie Ray distracts the ref and Big T comes out and attacks Booker from behind with the slapjack. Luger then puts on the Torture Rack to win. *3/4 Match #4: Sting [c] (#2) vs. The Great Muta (#7) w/ Gary Hart [Venice Beach Bracket - 1st Round] NWA Television Championship - NWA Power Four (9/1/1989) 1989 Muta is the only year I don't hate admitting that Muta/Mutoh was any good. Lots of awesome fast paced stuff. Terry Funk also comes out after Muta takes a breather early on and the distraction lets Muta take over with a great control seg. Sting just sort of comes back after not long enough, but it's still really good. Sting does his punches in the corner, and Gary Hart shoves him over the top to the floor for a DQ, so Sting advances! **3/4 In the second round of the Venice Beach Bracket, we have: -Kevin Nash (#5) vs. The Big Bossman (#8) -Lex Luger (#6) vs. Sting (#2) Match #5: The Rock (Rocky Maivia) [c] (#1) vs. Al Snow (Lief Cassidy) (#2) [Miami Bracket - 1st Round] WWF Intercontinental Championship - WWF Raw (2/17/1997) OH MY GOD, WHY?! They had a great cage match in 1999 and I remember other matches they had in 1998-99 that weren't awful. This was terrible, and Rocky wins with the Shoulderbreaker. 3/4* Match #6: Vader (#4) vs. The British Bulldog (#5) [Miami Bracket - 1st Round] WCW World Wide (12/11/1993) I know they had real matches, but this? This is a fucking arm wrestling challenge. It cuts in when Rick Rude is attacking Bulldog's arm before the contest, and then Vader comes out. Bulldog is getting taken to the back until Vader calls him a coward, so he goes back in, but since he has a fucked up arm, Vader easily wins. God fucking damnit. Match #7: Mankind (#3) vs. The Big Show (#6) [Miami Bracket - 1st Round] WrestleMania XV (3/28/1999) This is an underrated match. Not a classic or anything, but a fun Foley mauling. He takes a bunch of totally ridiculous and insane bumps and makes Show looks totally amazing. Show just murders Foley with stuff involving a chair at the end and he Chokeslams him through two chairs, which causes a DQ, and Foley wins! **3/4 Match #8: The Undertaker (#2) w/ Paul Bearer vs. Sycho Sid (#7) [Miami Bracket - 1st Round] WWF Raw is War (6/2/1997) Sid gets slightly more of the crowd's cheers. Fuck yeah, Sid. One of the more fascinating things in WWF history is the crowd's constant refusal to boo Sid on a consistent basis, no matter what he did. As for the match, it was Sid vs. Taker. You know what you get, it's not the best match. Taker wins with the Tombstone. ** In the second round of the Venice Beach bracket, we have: -The Rock (#1) vs. Vader (#4) -Mankind (#3) vs. The Undertaker (#2) |

FIRST ROUND - PART TWO: Match #1: Ric Flair (#1) vs. William Regal (#8) [Minneapolis Bracket - 1st Round] WWE Raw (11/14/2005) This is from the Eddie tribute show, so it's fun, but not amazing. Their 2004 match was way better. That being said, this is 5 minute of awesome matwork and cheating and awesome strikes. Really what you'd want from a Flair/Regal match, just not as long as you'd want. Flair gets the Figure Four on for the win. **3/4 Match #2: Rick Rude [c] (#4) w/ Percy Pringle vs. Kerry Von Erich (#5) [Minneapolis Bracket - 1st Round] NWA American Heavyweight Championship - WCCW (1/5/1986) This is pre-peak Rude, and he doesn't look like much at all here, sadly. I really don't like Kerry. Not like the kind of intense visceral hatred I have for post-comeback Shawn Michaels or anything, but he just bothers me. They had a generic wrestling match, with a hot Sportatorium crowd helping them. Rude's control seg on the leg was good. Kerry comes back without selling at all. Kerry works the knee, and then Rude also totally ignores it. Percy causes a distraction and Rude hits a DDT with a terrible Kerry bump to retain. ** Match #3: Ricky Steamboat (#3) vs. Barry Windham (#6) [Minneapolis Bracket - 1st Round] WCW Saturday Night (1/9/1993) This is magnificent. Lot of hot action early on, before Barry takes over briefly. Barry works the arm, and has some great and brutal looking strikes all throughout. Steamboat's selling is fantastic, as usual. He tries to work the arm in revenge and they trade arm work really well. Barry's selling also rules. Barry drifts away a little bit by starting to work on the leg when he takes over for a longer time. But he sticks to the knee then and Steamboat's selling of that is also great. He makes a comeback and the ref is knocked to the floor. He sees Barry throwing Ricky over the top though, so Steamboat wins by DQ. ***1/2 Match #4: Steve Austin [c] (#2) w/ Lady Blossom vs. Brian Pillman (#7) [Minneapolis Bracket - 1st Round] WCW Television Championship - WCW Pro (10/7/1991) Only 3-4 minutes, but a lot of fun. Tons of energy from both men, in terms of both offense and bumping. Austin cuts off a Pillman offensive by throwing him over the top, so Pillman wins by DQ! **1/4 The Minneapolis Bracket's second round is: -Ric Flair (#1) vs. Rick Rude (#4) -Ricky Steamboat (#2) vs. Brian Pillman (#7) Match #5: The Ultimate Warrior (#1) vs. WWF Superstars Taping (5/19/1992) Warrior being the #1 seed in a bracket with Bret Hart and Randy Savage is ridiculous. This is apparently the first time this has seen the light of day, so that's cool. This was not bad at all, but it was certainly a long way from good. There is a distinct lack of voodoo here. Warrior makes his comeback and wins with the Big Splash. ![]() *3/4 Match #6: Jake Roberts (#4) w/ Alice Cooper vs. The Honky Tonk Man (#5) w/ Jimmy Hart [Parts Unknown Bracket - 1st Round] WWF WrestleMania III (3/29/1987) This was enjoyable. HTM's stooging was enjoyable and I did not mind him as a generic cheap heel. Jake took some really amazing bumps and was pretty fucking awesome. Hart grabs Jake's leg to block the DDT and Honky gets a shoddy looking schoolboy with the ropes to steal the win. **1/2 Match #7: Bret Hart [c] (#3) vs. Razor Ramon (#6) [Parts Unknown Bracket - 1st Round] WWF Championship - WWF Royal Rumble (1/24/1993)[/b] I've reviewed this before. It's good, not great, due to them both getting lazy and not selling limbwork. Bret wins with the Sharpshooter. **3/4 Match #8: Randy Savage (#2) w/ Sherri vs. Hacksaw Jim Duggan (#7) [Parts Unknown Bracket - 1st Round] WWF Saturday Night's Main Event (1/27/1990) I've also done this before. Really good Savage performance, both on offense and bumping around to make Duggan look awesome. Duggan did his stuff and he was generally okay. Savage got a roll up with his feet on the ropes and then Sherri also held down Duggan's legs, so Savage was able to get the pin. **1/2 The second round for the Parts Unknown Bracket is as follows: -The Ultimate Warrior (#1) vs. The Honky Tonk Man (#5) -Bret Hart (#3) vs. Randy Savage (#2) Edited by Big Tuna, Mar 14 2012, 08:08 PM.

SECOND ROUND Match #1: Kevin Nash (#5) vs. Ray Traylor (#8) [Venice Beach Bracket - 2nd Round] WCW Monday Nitro (1/26/1998) This is right after the Jackknife Powerbomb ban has started, so this is more of an angle. Nash throws coffee at Traylor's face and hits the Powerbomb, CAUSING A DQ! AND HOLY SHIT, BOSSMAN MOVES ON AND THE CINDERELLA STORY CONTINUES! YES! 45/Poop Match #2: Sting (#2) w/ Miss Elizabeth vs. Lex Luger (#6) [Venice Beach Bracket - 2nd Round] WCW Starrcade (12/19/1999) Better than I expected in 1999. Luger seems fairly motivated, and them only doing 5 minutes or so helps out a lot. Sting has a lot of fire and puts on quality work. Liz tries to swerve Sting with a can of mace, BUT IT'S SILLY STRING! STING FINALLY SEES A TURN COMING! AMAZING! He then makes his comeback and Liz hits him with the bat for the DQ, and Sting advances! **1/4 Match #3: Rocky Maivia [c] (#1) vs. Vader (#4) [Miami Bracket - 2nd Round] WWF Intercontinental Championship - WWF Raw (3/3/1997)] UGH ANOTHER 1997 ROCKY MATCH?! What the fuck is this? Stolen from my 1997 review: "The degree to which Vader pulled his shots to not injure the kid was disgusting. he's basically totally neutered by now. This had way too much Rocky offense too. Anyways, some stuff happens. Mankind comes out and hits Rocky with the urn on the floor, and Vader is not happy as Rocky wins by DQ." *3/4 Match #4: The Undertaker (#2) w/ Paul Bearer vs. Mankind (#3) [Miami Bracket - 2nd Round] WWF King of the Ring (6/23/1996) THE TOURNAMENT FINALLY DELIVERS AGAIN! Really fucking great match from them. Review stolen from my 1996 review, but I'm watching it again because I adore this match: "Bearer comes out alone and when the lights come on, Taker is on the top rope and hits a Flying Clothesline. He hits an AMAZING flurry of angry punches in the corner. This settled down briefly, but picked up hugely when Mankind took over. It's very Foleyish after that. It's rough and sort of gritty in a WWF brawling way, but it all comes off as an actual fight, which is sort of amazing for a dead man Undertaker match. Lots of brutal shots and when Taker made his comebacks, it was super desperate and aggressive. They had some super brutal stuff with a chair. I don't want to get recappy, but overall, they did an amazing job making Mankind with this, as he felt like the first man who was an actual equal to The Undertaker. Mankind took the urn, but Bearer took it back. Mankind tried to get the Claw, but Taker held him back with a choke. Bearer got on the apron and tried to hit Mankind with the urn, but he pulled Taker in the way! Taker was out of it, and Mankind put on the Mandible Claw to win." ***1/4 Match #5: Ric Flair (#1) [c] w/ Fifi vs. Rick Rude (#4) [Minneapolis Bracket - 2nd Round] WCW International Championship - WCW Fall Brawl (9/19/1993) This gets like 30 minutes. Not quite great, but hey. Probably would have been tighter with 20 minutes, but giving Flair/Rude 30 minutes is hardly a bad idea. Rude has Fifi on his tights. Flair apparently has a bad neck here and tries hard to protect it and tries to end it quickly with the Figure Four, but Rude is too close to the ropes. Flair works the arm. Some good armwork, but Rude's selling left a lot to be desired considering how long Flair worked the arm. Rude then works the neck. Flair gets the Figure Four on a comeback after Rude tries to kiss Fifi but as the ref tries to stop her from getting in, Rude pulls out brass knucks and hits Flair! He is KO'd and Rude is able to get out of the hold and he covers for the win! **3/4 Match #6: Ricky Steamboat (#3) vs. Brian Pillman (#7) [Minneapolis Bracket - 2nd Round] Lumberjack Match - Saturday Night (2/20/1993) UGH LUMBERJACK MATCH. The lumberjacks aren't the focus here though, which puts this as one of the better Lumberjack Matches. It's still kind of a restriction though. The lumberjacks do eventually get involved, but it's a platform for Austin and Shane Douglas fighting on the floor to advance the Blonds vs. Steamboat/Shane feud. The action is good, but it's clearly two talented guys just doing stuff instead of having a real story. Steamboat ducks a clothesline from Austin to Pillman, and he throws Austin out and then rolls up Pillman to win.**3/4 Match #7: The Ultimate Warrior (#1) [c] vs. The Honky Tonk Man (#5) [Parts Unknown Bracker - 2nd Round] WWF Intercontinental Championship - WWF Saturday Night's Main Event (1/7/1989)[/b] Vince and Jessie claim that Honky could be the first man to be a two time IC Champion, which is bullshit. Muraco, Pedro, and the greatest IC Champion of 1984 so far, Tito Santana, have both won the belt twice. I get forgetting the first two due to WWF often retconning things before the current era, but Tito won it the second time in 1985. This was fine enough. They were both motivated and they had a fun basic match. Warrior wins with a Diving Shoulderblock. **1/4 Match #8: Randy Savage (#2) w/ Miss Elizabeth vs. Bret Hart (#3) w/ Jimmy Hart & Jim Neidhart [Parts Unknown Bracket - 2nd Round] WWF Saturday Night's Main Event (11/28/1987) Fuck, this was great! Tons of energy from Randy, and both men were super super crisp. I've always been interested in the evolution of people as wrestlers, like how it's awesome to watch mid 90s Benoit or 2003 CM Punk or 2003 Samoa Joe and see how guys slowly began incorporating elements of what will make them great in the future. There's a lot of that with Bret here. It's not all together yet, but he already has a great snap on all his offense. He also takes huge sternum bumps. They do good work in the first half, and it'd be *** on its own, but then Savage hurts his ankle and it gets AMAZING. Bret can work a leg with the best of them, and Savage's selling is amazing. Savage can't run or climb or anything, so he has to cradle Bret to counter a slam for the win! Really made Bret look almost on Savage's level, so great job by both men on that. ***3/4 THE QUARTERFINALS: -Sting (#2) vs. The Big Bossman (#8) - VENICE BEACH BRACKET -The Rock (#1) vs. Mankind (#3) - MIAMI BRACKET -Ricky Steamboat (#3) vs. Rick Rude (#4) - MINNEAPOLIS BRACKET -The Ultimate Warrior (#1) vs. Randy Savage (#2) - PARTS UNKNOWN BRACKET |

QUARTERFINALS: Match #1: Sting (#2) vs. Big Bubba (#8) [Venice Beach Bracket - Finals] Lights Out Match - WCW Slamboree (5/21/1995) Really enjoyable match, but they could have done so much more. Lights Out here just means No DQ. They used a table for some fun stuff, but it was a real table, so they didn't get a lot of mileage out of breaking it and combine that with them not really doing anything you haven't seen before, and this is disappointing. Sting gets a Huracanrana onto the table on the mat and then he puts on the Scorpion Deathlock for the win. **1/2 #2 Seed Sting wins the Venice Beach Bracket, and he goes to the Final Four! Match #2: The Rock (#1) vs. Mankind (#3) [Miami Bracket - Finals] WWF IYH: Cold Day In Hell (5/11/1997) ANOTHER MAIVIA MATCH?! His entire run in this tournament is a HUGE waste of good footage. They could have done the Cage Match with Al Snow, his fun match vs. Vader from Raw 1998, and there's at least 5 better matches against Foley from the 98-99 feud that could have been used. Review from my 1997: "Best Rocky match since his debut. He got violent at some points, with a Rock Bottom on the ramp and a great Northern Lariat. Of course, Mankind bumped like a psycho to make it work. He rolled through a Crossbody from Rocky, and got the Mandible Claw for the win." **1/2 #3 Seed Mankind wins the Miami Bracket, and he goes to fight Sting in the Semi-Finals! Match #3: Ricky Steamboat (#3) w/ Ninja vs. Rick Rude (#4) [c] [Minneapolis Bracket - Finals] WCW U.S. Championship - SuperBrawl II (2/29/1992) This was what you'd expect. Lots of Steamboat armwork early on, and Rude's selling is wonderful. Much better than it was in the Flair match. Jesse telling JR on commentary that he'd be much more successful if he wore a cowboy hat is AMAZING. Rude has great work on the neck and Rude selling his arm as he flexes is amazing. His control seg went on a little long though. Ricky did make an awesome comeback though. AND THE NINJA PULLS OUT A HUGE ASS CELL PHONE AND HITS STEAMBOAT WITH IT! RUDE WINS! They're capable of more, and they would do better in 1992. **3/4 #4 Seed Rick Rude wins the Minneapolis Bracket! Match #4: The Ultimate Warrior (#1) vs. Randy Savage (#2) w/ Sherri [Parts Unknown Bracket - Finals] CAREER VS. CAREER - WWF WrestleMania VII (3/24/1991) Review stolen from my 1991: "ELIZABETH IS IN THE CROWD! This is classic. Not so much for the match, but for the entire package including the match and post-match. That's not to undersell the match or anything, it's really great, but not an all time classic. Early part is carried by some really great Savage work. He leans into all of Warrior's punches to make them look like not total dogshit for once, and bumps around like crazy. He takes over after Warrior accidentally jumps into the buckles. Good control seg. Sherri accidentally hit Savage with her shoe, and Warrior came back into it. Savage hit 5 Flying Elbows AND WARRIOR KICKED OUT?!?!!??! WHAT THE FUCK?! That is some bullshit. Warrior made his big comeback, but Savage kicked out of the Splash! Warrior then talks to his hands a lot, allowing Savage to knock him to the floor. Sherri holds him on the railing and Randy tries to crush his larynx, but Warrior moves and Savage hits the steel! Back inside, Warrior hits a series of shoulderblocks to a basically KO'd Savage to win." ***1/2 They also air the incredible post-match. #1 Seed The Ultimate Warrior wins the Parts Unknown Bracket, and he will fight Rick Rude in the Semi-Finals! |

SEMI-FINALS & FINALS: Sting (#2) vs. Cactus Jack (#3) [Semi-Finals] Falls Count Anywhere Match - WCW Beach Blast 1992 (6/20/1992) What a fucking great match. Hot crowd combined with really wild brawling. Both men are crisp as hell and most of the spots they do still stand up as being really brutal. Basic story of the Ace character having to dig down and find his brutal side to beat the insane brawler. A ton of really insane Foley bumps too, and the subtle thing of Sting using a lot more wrestling based stuff on the floor was a neat way to get over the story of it. I love when people fight on the gigantic ramp to the ring. I fucking love the ramp that goes right to the ring. Sting gets a Flying Clothesline off the top to Jack on the ramp to win. **** Match #2: The Ultimate Warrior [c] (#1) vs. Rick Rude (#4) w/ Bobby Heenan [Semi-Finals] WWF Intercontinental Championship - WWF WrestleMania V (4/2/1989) Awesome Rude performance here. Awesome bumping and selling by Rude for the 10 or so minutes that this went. Warrior was not awful, but this, like all their matches I've seen, is a great Rude carryjob. Warrior works his back early on, and his selling when he takes over is great, like not being able to do his hip swivel because he's hurt. The finish of this is fairly famous, with Heenan tripping up Rude as he tries a Suplex and he holds his feet down to steal the belt for Rude. AND RICK RUDE GOES TO THE FINALS! FUCK YOU WARRIOR! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! **3/4 AND YOUR FINALS.... Footage airs of before the finals (wink wink) of Luger attacking Sting from behind on the ramp and injuring his knee! Stanford says Luger is mad about his loss in the second round and wants to cost Sting the tournament. FANTASTIC BOOKING OF THE TOURNAMENT THERE! Match #3: Sting (#2) vs. Rick Rude (#4) w/ Paul E. Dangerously [2011 MARCH MADNESS FINALS] WCW Clash of the Champions XVII (11/19/1991) STING LIMPS IN WITH HIS KNEE TAPED UP! FUCK YEAH! This was awesome. Sting's selling is really fucking amazing and he has a ton of fire and this is perfect for 5-6 minutes with the angle they were working about the knee. Rude's bumping was also really amazing. Rude eventually goes to the knee and it is fantastic. Sting comes back while selling a ton. He grabs Dangerously for interfering, but Rude clips the knee and gets a schoolboy with the tights AND RUDE WINS THE TOURNAMENT! *** STATS FORTHCOMING |
