This is along the lines of the Memphis and Mid-South sets, but lesser in volume because shit doesn't pick up until 1982 or so, and then dies off around 86/87 But hey, still, new stuff. Plus it adds to the large 80s list, which is only missing WWF stuff, and maybe some random NWA matches that Biggie didn't review, like pre-Starrcade stuff and a random Flair fancam defense or stuff like that. Ric Flair [c] vs. Kerry Von Erich [NWA World Heavyweight Championship - Best of Three Falls], 8/24/1982 Awesome matwork to begin. Flair guides Kerry well, but it's not carrying, because Kerry has his own cool little things to add to it. Most notably, where Flair used his hands to break the grip on a headscissors by Kerry on the mat, Kerry reapplies it a few moments later, and now puts his feet over one of Flair's hands, to avoid him breaking it up in a similar way. Classic Flair work getting over the strength of a challenger, and then a control seg. Flair has lots of awesome punches and stuff as usual. Great slugfest portions at the end of the first fall and Kerry accidentally Discus Punches the first ref. Another comes out as Kerry has a Sleeper on, but then the first DQ's Kerry, so Flair goes 1-0. Kerry goes nuts with stuff, but then Flair targets the knee. Kerry's selling is so much better than I would have expected. Kerry's counter of the Figure Four into the CLAW HOLD~ is awesome, and Flair bleeds a lot. The claw gets Kerry a pin, and it is at 1-1. AND NOW FLAIR GOES NUTS WITH PUNCHES AND HEADBUTTS AND SHIT! Flair has no regard for the rules, although he's not cheating, since he'll keep the title if he's DQ'd anyways. They just start killing each other with straight punches to the face and shoving the ref away, and the ref calls it a Double DQ. **** They get pulled apart, and Flair leaves with the belt. Other referees come out, along with Fritz and the other Von Erichs. Fritz yells at the ref and holds up Kerry's arm, and the biased announcers yell that Kerry should be the champion. Well, no. Because there's these things called rules, and when you break them and keep shoving the ref and hit the ref in the first fall, you tend to get DQ'd, and that's why you're losers. Ric Flair [c] vs. David Von Erich [NWA World Heavyweight Championship], 10/11/1982 This kind of sucked, especially in comparison to the last match. Both men come out to the Star Wars theme, despite this not being one of the WCCW Star Wars shows. They claim Flair/Kerry from August was at a Star Wars show, which is not listed online at all. Maybe Fritz just got confused and named all his arena shows "Star Wars" to draw in the kids. The announcers also talk about how Flair screwed Kerry, and these may be the most bias announcers ever. FLAIR DIDN'T CHEAT ALL. AND THAT'S RIC FUCKING FLAIR. RIC FUCKING FLAIR NOT FUCKING CHEATING IN A MATCH IS COMPLETELY AMAZING, AND YOU STILL SHIT ON HIM?! Anyways, this match. Flair carries David on the mat. I say carries now because unlike Kerry, David didn't have a ton of fire or cool little stuff to bring to the table. Matwork went on too long, since David didn't bring anything to it. David keeps going to the arm for like 5+ minutes, and Flair doesn't sell the arm at all. Flair's control seg is easily the best part, since it's impossible for that idiot David to ruin. Kerry comes out to cheer on his less talented idiot brother when Flair goes to the leg, and Kerry is on crutches. Flair then attacks Kerry when he gets on the apron, and David hits Flair in the back of the knee with the title belt RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE REFEREE. David then hits Flair with the crutch, and the ref finally has to call a DQ since David is being blatant about it. **1/2 |

Ric Flair [c] vs. Kerry Von Erich [NWA World Heavyweight Championship - Steel Cage Match - Multiple Referees, One of Whom is Michael Hayes], 12/25/1982 The biased announcer actually introduces Kerry as the uncrowned world champion. Before the match, Hayes says he brought his big brother Terry Gordy out to stay in front of the door to keep it fair. This is almost all action, and the only breaks are to get over Hayes as an unbiased ref. Kerry initially targets the knee in revenge, and Flair sells well in transition. Tons of great little slugfests like their last match. Flair bleeds a lot. When in trouble, he goes to the knee. Hayes enforces rules by pulling Kerry off of the Claw when Flair is in the ropes. Kerry shoves Hayes down. Flair spits at Hayes and shoves him, so Hayes punches him. He tries to get Kerry to cover, but he refuses, so Hayes goes out the door. Flair shoves Kerry into Hayes from behind, and he falls out. They do more stuff AND TERRY SLAMS THE DOOR INTO KERRY'S HEAD! YEAH! FUCK YOU! They are ejected, and the match continues. He has good unconscious selling, and Flair gets real brutal. The ref eventually stops the match, and Flair wins. ***1/4 |

Before the match, promos are included: -Ric Flair says he's no stranger to Terry Gordy, and he's known him since he began wrestling about 5 years ago. He says he's the most qualified of the Freebirds to receive a title shot, but he's still a long way from being Ric Flair, and he's gonna show him that. -Terry Gordy says this is Terry Gordy's night, and Flair's had it for a while, but it's time for him to give it up, jack. Hayes says Flair is only still champion because of them, and they're not as stupid as the Von Erichs, so the title will be property of the Freebirds. Ric Flair [c] vs. Terry Gordy [NWA World Heavyweight Championship], 2/4/1983 This is on TV, so it's only like 10 minutes, but that's for the best, because who wants to see long Terry Gordy matches? Flair is working face and chopping the tree down. Gordy takes over, and it's pretty solid. Match isn't anything special though, it's just kind of two guys doing stuff. Flair ducks under Gordy leaping at him and Gordy hits his throat on the top rope, so Flair covers to win. **3/4 Terry Gordy/Michael Hayes/Boddy Roberts vs. Kerry Von Erich/David Von Erich/Kevin Von Erich [Lumberjack Match], 2/18/1983 Really really fun brawl. Kerry again has a ton of fire and shit. The Freebirds hold their own too, since they all have awesome punches and good looking offense and huge bumps. David isn't much, but Kevin has a ton of energy, and is a great FIP as a result. Kerry is isolated next and takes a NASTY bump to the concrete. Hayes comes off the top ILLEGALLY~ to hit Kerry with an axe handle, but when he covers, David does the same, and the Von Erichs win. Well, they have their revenge. Feud's over. *** |

Ric Flair [c] vs. Kevin Von Erich [NWA World Heavyweight Championship], 4/1/1983 Kevin is somewhere between Kerry and David in terms of matwork. This is classic Flair vs. a young high flyer. Flair breaks Kevin's nose with a straight punch and works the face. Kevin does awesome stuff, and Flair keeps escaping by going to the broken nose, using it to break both the Claw and a Sleeper. There is a ref bump, and shit breaks down. Kevin fights back with punches to the nose in revenge. I have little spurts of thinking guys are the G.O.A.T. Obviously my heart goes with Benoit on a sheer in-ring level, but if I'm using my head, it's Flair. I've had spurts where it's Lawler or Arn or Bret or Misawa or whoever, but it seems every time I see classic Flair against a new opponent (as in not Sting or Steamboat or Luger), it reaffirms that Flair is the greatest of all time, just for all the different kinds of shit he was capable of. Just in the WCCW stuff, he's worked neutral but aggressive champion, babyface chopping down a big heel, desperate cheating champion, and now angry veteran against a young punk. And all of them have been perfectly done. Anyways, there's two ref bumps, and both men throw each other over the top. Flair bleeds, and a new ref comes out. Kevin hits a Crossbody off the top, AND WINS THE TITLE! ***1/4 Oh. nope. The first ref calls it a double DQ, so the title goes back to Flair. Terry Gordy/Michael Hayes/Buddy Roberts/Jimmy Garvin vs. Kerry Von Erich/Kevin Von Erich/David Von Erich/Iceman King Parsons [Elimination Match], 5/27/1983 Necro Butcher would have been a great Freebird enforcer, solely because they have the same theme music. There is an initial chaotic mess to begin. Terry tries a Piledriver on David, but Kevin hits them both with a Crossbody. All the Von Erichs and Iceman cover Gordy, and somehow that's legal, so Gordy gets pinned. The same thing happens to Parsons, so I guess there are no rules. Elimination also can apparently be over the top, so David and Garvin eliminate each other. It then becomes another awesome chaotic brawl. Hayes eliminates Kerry with a Flying Elbow Butt off the top. They try to force Kevin over the top, but when they push him, he skins the cat back in after momentum takes both Buddy and Hayes out. So the Von Erichs win AGAIN. *** |

Harley Race [c] vs. Kevin Von Erich [NWA World Heavyweight Championship - Over the Top Rope DQ Banned - Race Can Lose Title on DQ], 6/17/1983 Race is mad that he has to defend in stipulations that were made for Flair, before Harley beat Flair for the belt. Awesome Harley bumping early on. It takes a little bit to get going, but once Kevin hurts his arm, this picks up HUGE. Kevin's selling is AMAZING, and he can't even whip Harley with it. He goes to the arm after basically everything he does. Harley works the arm really well. Then it gets ruined a little with the same usual finish. David Von Erich comes out to help Kevin with his arm, but Harley kicks him through the ropes, so David comes in and attacks him. I have no idea how all the Von Erich brothers don't hate each other by this point. ***1/4 Terry Gordy/Michael Hayes/Buddy Roberts [c] vs. Kerry Von Erich/Kevin Von Erich/David Von Erich [WCCW Six Man Tag Team Championship - Best of Three Falls], 7/4/1983 This is super super super fucking goddamned amazing, and has one of the hottest crowds ever. Tons of awesome Hayes bumping. Awesome energy from everyone, especially Kevin. Pretty much every piece of offense and strike thrown looks brutal as hell. The Freebirds dominate the first fall, but Hayes reverses a roll up by Kerry and grabs the tights to go 1-0. 2nd fall is longer, and has the Freebirds isolating David. Kerry has an awesome hot tag, but is also isolated. The Birds do a lot of illegal double teaming, which causes a break down in the rules. Behind the ref's back, Kerry and Kevin hit Roberts with a Double Clothesline in revenge for the 2nd fall. 3rd fall is total chaos. Lots of awesome punches and brawling, and Kevin beats Hayes for the belts with his Reverse Crossbody off the top. ***3/4 |

Kerry Von Erich/Kevin Von Erich/David Von Erich [c] vs. Terry Gordy/Michael Hayes/Buddy Roberts [WCCW Six Man Tag Team Championship], 8/12/1983 Buddy is wearing a padded helmet to hold his wig on after being shaved at some point. Usual amazing Freedbird bumping early on. David is again the weakest of the brothers, and Kerry and Kevin have tons of energy and crisp offense. Usual awesome barfight style match between the two teams. Kerry has Hayes up for a slam, but Buddy headbutts him in the back of the head, and Kerry collapses, knocked out. Buddy covers to win, and speculation begins that it is a loaded helmet. *** |

David Von Erich [c] vs. Terry Gordy [Texas Heavyweight Title - Best of Three Falls], 9/5/1983 Good chaotic first fall. They brawl a lot and everything looks good. David hits Gordy with a surprise Jumbo High Knee for the pin to go up 1-0. 2nd fall starts the same and Gordy does his awesome Flair Corner Bump variant. Buddy Roberts comes out to help Terry take over. Gordy gets the Asiatic Spike on and David passes out to even it up at 1-1. Final fall is less wild as expected. David rolls up Gordy to win. **3/4 |

Terry Gordy/Michael Hayes/Buddy Roberts vs. Kerry Von Erich/Kevin Von Erich/David Von Erich [Elimination Match], 11/21/1983 This is joined in progress and just really fucking great immediately, but that's probably the peak. Gordy is destroying Kerry with some incredible jabs as the tape cuts in. Kerry has uncharacteristically weak punches in his comeback, which is a shame since they're supposed to bust open Hayes. They keep fighting and knock the ref over, so he DQs both Kerry and Hayes within 4 minutes. Kevin carries David again and is the lifeblood of his team now. Then unfortunately, he gets beat with a double team Gutbuster, and it's down to this sack of shit David. Gordy looks awesome on offense again and makes David look not awful too. OH BUT APPARENTLY, YOU CAN WIN BY THROWING THEM OVER THE TOP, BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT HE DOES. BIASED RULES TO FAVOR THE GOLDEN BOY. FUCK YOU DAVID. *** |

Kerry Von Erich vs. Michael Hayes [Steel Cage Match - LOSER LEAVES TOWN], 11/24/1983 This is JIP with eight minutes, but is still great. Lots of gritty violence and blood and punching in front of a crazy hot crowd. Hayes bloodies up Kerry and unwraps his knee tape to choke Kerry for a while. He comes back and uses the tape to fling Hayes into cage walls until he bleeds a lot. The Freebirds come out to interfere, and Fritz cuts them off. He shakes the cage as Buddy climbs up top, which causes him to get crotched. Terry throws knucks in to Hayes, but Kerry ducks and hits the Discus Punch. Fritz slams the door on Terry in revenge, and Kerry puts the knucks on and hits Hayes with them to win. *** |
