WWF Champion: Randy Savage, Since 3/27/1988
WWF Intercontinental Champion: The Honky Tonk Man, Since 6/13/1987 - LONGEST REIGNING CHAMPION CURRENTLY
WWF Tag Team Champions: Demolition, Since 3/27/1988

WWF Superstars
August 13th, 1988
LaCrosse, WI

Match #1: Randy Savage w/ Miss Elizabeth & Hulk Hogan vs. Conquistador Uno w/ Dos

SAVAGE SQUASH AS CHAMPION! YEAH! This ruled as usual, since it's Randy Savage with over 2 minutes. He wins with the Flying Elbow.
**

Post-match, Hogan fights off Dos, and raises Randy's hand. Somehow, this warrants "Real American" playing, despite Randy just winning. All three faces then pose. "She could be the downfall of this team. You can't have one woman and two men." - Jesse.

WWF UPDATE:
-Gene runs down the SummerSlam card

Match #2: Rick Rude w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Buck Zumhoffe
RUDE HAS CHERYL ROBERTS' FACE ON THE CROTCH OF HIS TIGHTS! AMAZING! Only 90 seconds yet again. Rude delivers. He beats Rock and Roll with the Rude Awakening.
*1/2

Posted Image

Rude makes out with a local.

EVENTS CENTER:
-Ted DiBiase says he's not patient anymore, and he can't wait to get Hulk Hogan back in a ring so that he can pay him back for his part in the robbery at WrestleMania IV. He says Hogan isn't a champion anymore, and he's not even the #1 Contender, because that's his too, just like Hogan's spot is his now.
-The Harts want a rematch with the Rougeaus, and Bret says Jimmy Hart might have signed them against the Rougeaus again, but they'll roll over them this time

Match #3: The British Bulldogs vs. Chris Curtis/Tom Burton
This is short and uneventful. Dynamite beats one of them with the Back Superplex.
*1/2

Match #4: Bad News Brown vs. Jim Yates

Another solid but not great BNB squash. He picks up the win with the Ghetto Blaster. Ken Patera does an inset promo and says some words about things.
*1/2

EVENTS CENTER:
-SummerSlam promos now
-The Mega Bucks cut a promo. Ted says it's time for all the brats to go back to school, and they're going to take the Mega Powers to school in two weeks' time. He says they'll learn that he wasn't lying and the truth is that money is power and money buys everything. He says Hogan is desperate to stay on top, and Andre says it won't happen. Andre says the only thing Elizabeth can manage is buying cheap dresses, and all she's good for is serving pancakes at a waffle house.

Match #5: Jim Duggan vs. George Patraski
Only a minute. Whatevs. Duggan wins with his move.
*

Craig is on the stage, and he brings out Demolition and Mr. Fuji. They have Jimmy Hart with them, and Jimmy Hart says he still owns the Hart Foundation's contracts, and he's going to tell Mr. Fuji all about the Hart Foundation, and he'll squeal like a canary to make sure that they never win the WWF Tag Team Championship again. Smash says they are champions and they've beaten up every opponent and they've beaten them bad. Smash says they're gonna kick their teeth in. Ax says the Foundation is no better than the bums and lowlifes they've destroyed.

Match #6: Dino Bravo w/ Frenchy Martin vs. Chris Zarnoff
This happened. Sucked.
1/2*

Match #7: The Powers of Pain vs. Rick Gantner/Frankie DeFalco

Too much Warlord here, and not enough Barbarian. So it wasn't as great as their first squash. Still very good. They win with the Powerslam/Diving Headbutt combination.

The Blue Angel vs. Barry Horowitz, Los Angeles (August 13th)
A new market being taped! Angel is Owen Hart under a slightly different Blue Blazer costume. This is acclaimed or whatever reason, so I'm giving it a shot. AND WHAT THE FUCK?! IT'S A GREAT MATCH ALMOST? Owen has tons of cool flying and armwork early on, AND BARRY HOROWITZ FLIES AROUND TOO AND HAS A SWEET SUPERKICK. They kind of fall apart at the end, since neither has any actual finishing offense. Owen wins with a Moonsault.
**3/4

Randy Savage [c] vs. Andre the Giant [WWF Championship], Los Angeles (August 13th)

Liz and Heenan are there. This is really really enjoyable. Heenan is ejected for repeatedly threatening Elizabeth early on. Great cat and mouse game. Andre catches him and does his entertaining lazy cheating. Savage takes huge bumps and has brief frantic comebacks. He gets Andre down finally and hits the Flying Elbow, BUT ANDRE KICKS OUT HOLY SHIT WHAT. Andre rolls out and Savage fights on the floor, and it goes to a double count out.

Match #1: Haku w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Mike Richards

Very good, but not long enough. Haku wins with the Superkick.
*3/4

WWF UPDATE:
-Gene runs down the SummerSlam card AND THEY USE THE EARLY 90S RUMBLE SONG FOR IT! AWESOME!

Match #2: The Rockers vs. Trent Knight/Al Navarro
They get 3 minutes, so they get to do lots and lots of cool stuff. This time, Marty hits a Flying Crossbody to win.
**

EVENTS CENTER:
-He's plugging a Trenton house show for some reason

Match #3: The Big Bossman w/ Slick vs. Bob Emery
Bossman finally gets another squash, and it was great. Bossman Slam ends it.
**

Bossman handcuffs him to the ropes and beats him with the night stick.

EVENTS CENTER:
-Now a Hartford show, what the fuck is up with this week?

Match #4: The Junkyard Dog vs. Johnny Zeigler
THUMP.

Craig is on the stage, and he brings The Mega Bucks onto the stage. Ted says it's about a week away, and they call themselves the Mega Powers. He says they can't and won't get along like he and Andre, because they don't have the kind of bond only money can buy. He says Hogan could have handed him the belt and retired a wealthy man, but it's going to cost him everything. Andre says he can't wait to get back in the ring with Hulk Hogan, and then nothing else he says sounds like English. Heenan says they have a referee that will give them a fair shake, and says he talked to Jesse, and Jesse always tells it like it is, and he'll call it like it is. Ted says EVERYONE has a price for the Million Dollar Man.

Match #5: The Ultimate Warrior vs. Dusty Wolfe
This happens. Splash ends it.
*

Match #6: Outlaw Ron Bass vs. Jim Evans

This is under a minutes, so it's not much. Bass wins with his proto-Pedigree.
1/2*

He is about to use the bullwhip again, but Brutus Beefcake runs out to save. He then cuts the whip in two.

The Hart Foundation vs. The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers, Philadelphia (August 27th)
Pretty much the same match as in Boston, except that this is 17 minutes instead of under 15. Great matwork, Rougeau stooging, Neidhart power, etc. The Rougeaus start to break out some 2007 Chris Hero level great bullshit unnecessary gymnastics. Neidhart has a great hot tag, and Bret gets back in. He Piledrives Ray, but then the other one hits a Flying Double Axe during the cover and Raymond covers Bret to win.
***

Randy Savage [c] vs. Ted DiBiase [WWF Championship], Philadelphia (August 27th)

This was great. Again. Savage is now finally jumping Ted after 5 months of cheap shots. More of an all out fight than a normal wrestling structure, which is a nice way to change it up and to prevent them from repeating stuff. They do their thing and Randy is shoved off the top again by Virgil for a DQ to set up the cage match in this town.

I lack the 8/27 and 9/3 episodes of Superstars.

WWF Superstars
August 27th, 1988

8/27/88 - included Craig DeGeorge conducting an interview with WWF World Champion Randy Savage, Hulk Hogan, & Miss Elizabeth regarding their match at Summer Slam against Ted Dibiase & Andre the Giant:

Koko B. Ware pinned Brian Costello at 1:45 with the Ghostbuster

Hercules (w/ Bobby Heenan) defeated George South via submission with the full nelson at the 59-second mark

Bret Hart & Jim Neidhart defeated the Conquistadors at 2:14 when Bret scored the pin following the Hart Attack; after the bout, Jimmy Hart - who had watched the match from the interview platform - promised the Harts would not win the tag team titles at Summer Slam before Bret & Neidhart chased him backstage

Jacques & Raymond Rougeau defeated Brad Anderson & Lanny Poffo at 1:17 when Raymond pinned Anderson following a double team move off the top

Brutus Beefcake defeated Tony Burton via disqualification at 1:52 when Ron Bass interfered and attacked Beefcake with his whip, eventually busting him open with his spurs, resulting in a big 'censor' sign to appear on the screen; Bass continued the attack until a number of wrestlers swarmed the ring; the incident forced Beefcake out of Summer Slam two nights later and his IC title shot against the Honkytonk Man

WWF SUMMERSLAM 1988
AUGUST 29TH, 1988
MADISON SQUARE GARDEN
NEW YORK, NY

Match #1: The British Bulldogs vs. The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers

This strikes me as the first GREAT WWF PPV opener. There've been good ones, but one of the key elements of WWF/E PPV style is starting off with talented mid-level guys to start a show off hot. Bret/Owen, Razor/Jarrett, Bret/Hakushi, Kid/Hakushi, etc. And this is really the birth of that. SUPER hot crowd, tons of athletic spots, all really crisp and inventive, huge bumps and sells from everyone, and it gets time. 20 minutes exactly. Instead of the Rougeaus' awesome bullshit stalling, the first half is the Bulldogs beating the shit out of them. It's probably because Dynamite is a surly piece of shit and hates the Rougeaus, but god damn, was it fun to watch. Great Rougeau cheating throughout, and yeah, good finishing run too. The 20:00 time limit expires.
***

Gorilla says Beefcake cannot compete for the IC Title tonight due to the attack by Outlaw Ron Bass. Thank you, Ron Bass! They then show clips.

Match #2: Bad News Brown vs. Ken Patera
I usually complain on 1985-1991 PPVs about matches being too short, but this did not need 6 minutes at all. Really didn't click at all, and was full of really shitty looking stuff. BNB wins with the Ghetto Blaster.
*1/2

In the back, Gene interviews The Megapowers. Hogan says they can already feel MSG rumbling, and he knows what the Mania and the Madness feels like, but together, they are the strongest force in the universe. Savage says he's never felt so much electricity, and besides that, they have their secret weapon, Elizabeth. Hogan says they wouldn't go in alone, and the last thing those Mega Bucks will see is the kiss of death.

Match #3: Rick Rude w/ Bobby Heenan vs. The Junkyard Dog
Rude has gone back to tights without Cheryl's face on them. This is whatever as well. Rude does the best he can with Rude, and at least it's not Patera/Brown. Rude takes off his tights again to reveal Cheryl's face on his underneath trunks, so Jake Roberts runs out and attacks him for the DQ.
**

Rude bails out and he and Heenan run to the back.

In the back, Gene interviews Honky and Jimmy Hart. Honky says he knew Brutus would chicken out, but being the humanitarian that he is, he asked for someone else to wrestle. Gene says he's heard rumors of who it is, and Honky says he doesn't want anyone to know, and he wants to surprise everyone. Gene says he's very strong and Honky says he wants whoever it is to be surprised by it. He says he'll take anyone thrown at him and he loves surprises.

Match #4: The Powers of Pain w/ The Baron vs. The Bolsheviks w/ Slick
SO BAD. Terrible clubbering match, no matter how hard Barbarian tries. The POP beat Boris with the Powerslam/Diving Headbutt combo.
3/4*

THE SURVIVOR SERIES: THIS THANKSGIVING NIGHT!

It is time for the BROTHER LOVE SHOW. IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOU! This has apparently been going on for a while, but on Wrestling Challenge, unfortunately. He says the WWF promised him a special guest, but his guest is anything but special, and it's Hacksaw Jim Duggan! He says a lot of stuff and Love says Duggan has no love for him or his country, AND DUGGAN LOSES IT AT HIS LOVE FOR AMERICA BEING QUESTIONED FUCK YEAH. Duggan runs him off with the 2x4.

The Honky Tonk Man comes out for his match, AND HIS OPPONENT IS THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR!

Match #5: The Honky Tonk Man [c] w/ Jimmy Hart vs. The Ultimate Warrior [WWF Intercontinental Championship]
SLAM. SHOULDERBLOCKS. SPLASH. NEW CHAMPION!
THE FAMILY THAT I LIVE FOR ONLY BREATHES THE AIR THAT SMELLS OF COMBAT

Well, it's over now finally. And I can officially say that Honky was not a great champion at all. The idea of his reign is amazing. Bragging lazy shithead lucks into the title and holds into it for a retardedly long time without ever winning a title match clean and only actually winning title matches by pinfall a few times. But god damn, those matches mostly blew. Only the Savage series delivered, and that's because it's Randy fucking Savage, the actual greatest IC Champion ever. Maybe if HTM didn't waste the last 6 months on Brutus Beefcake, I could say he was a good champion, but nope. Not even as good as the upper mid-level IC Champions like Shawn Michaels, Jeff Jarrett, Razor Ramon, Orton, etc. Let alone touching guys like Perfect, Benoit, Jericho, Tito, Valentine, or especially Savage. But it made Warrior a huge star in one night for ending it, which is kind of the point of a reign like this.

Footage of some Survivor Series matches from 1987 airs to hype the second annual SurSer.

Match #6: Don Muraco vs. Dino Bravo w/ Frenchy Martin
This was also really bad. At least it was only 5 minutes though. Martin causes a distraction and Dino wins with a Sidewalk Slam.
3/4*

SURVIVOR SERIES: NOVEMBER 24TH!

In the back, Mooney interviews Jesse. He says this is the best decision Jack Tunney has ever made, because he's the only man here that's man enough to referee a match of this magnitude. Sean asks about Ted's comment that everyone has a price, and Jesse asks if Sean is a fool. He says if someone wants to give him money, he's no fool, he'll take the money.

Match #7: Demolition [c] w/ Mr. Fuji & Jimmy Hart vs. The Hart Foundation [WWF Tag Team Championship]
Shame this is only 10 minutes, but it delivers as you would expect from two of the best teams of all time. This is probably the best case you can make for Demolition as an all time great team as well despite the time restriction, although the greatness of this hinges on you seeing it relative to all of Demolition's run to this point. Which I am, so it works. This also shows how well a strong build can put people over even in defeat. Demolition are unstoppable and have steamrolled everyone. They underestimate the Harts a little bit due to having Jimmy there, but they pay for it early on as Bret gets a super close nearfall. Neidhart gets in and they try to clubber and bully him, BUT NEIDHART HAS NONE OF IT AND SOMEONE FINALLY OVERPOWERS DEMOLITION! Demolition stalls a little. They've stalled before against Strike Force and the Bulldogs, but that felt like them briefly surprised, and here it's like they're totally thrown off of their game. Jimmy gives Fuji advice and he relays it to Smash on the apron, who kicks Neidhart in the back as he runs off the ropes to take over. Great control seg again, and Demolition now seems like they're trying to just contain opponents. Bret gets in, AND DEMOLITION ACTUALLY BEGS OFF HOLY SHIT! He has a great little false hot tag, but Jimmy's advice plays in again, as they dodge a corner charge and Bret hits his arm off the post. They work the arm, and Bret sells like Bret Hart. Neidhart eventually has a great hot tag, and goes crazy with athletic stuff. NEIDHART WITH A FUCKING DIVE HOLY SHIT! Bret gets back in, and goes for the Piledriver. Fuji tries a distraction, BUT NEIDHART PUNCHES HIM OUT! FUCK YEAH! BUT THEN JIMMY HART THROWS SMASH THE MEGAPHONE AND HE HITS BRET WITH IT! BOOOOOOOOOO! He covers to win.
***1/4

In the back, Gene is with Honky and Jimmy Hart. He yells that he's been ripped off and robbed and that this isn't fair. He says the belt belongs to him, it's his belt, and he'll always be the greatest of all time.

Match #8: The Big Bossman w/ Slick vs. Koko B. Ware
This gets 6 minutes and rules. Tons of cool Bossman big man bumping, and Koko had a load of energy as usual. Koko had a few nearfalls, but Bossman wins with the Bossman Slam.
**1/2

Match #9: Jake Roberts vs. Hercules

For some reason, this gets over 10 minutes and is the second longest match on the show. It's not outright bad or anything, Jake carries Herc a little bit, but it's really really goddamned dull. DDT ends it.
*3/4

Video airs of the events leading up to the main event.

Match #10: The Megapowers w/ Miss Elizabeth vs. The Mega Bucks w/ Bobby Heenan & Virgil
Really fun match, especially if you're like me and don't mind late 80s heel Andre. Savage demands to start. Ted and Savage carry their respective sides through force of bumping and selling and cool offense. Hogan and Andre are solid and don't drag it down, but they mostly stay out of the way. Savage had a great hot tag, and yeah. Savage misses the Flying Elbow and Jesse tries a quick count when Ted covers, but Savage kicks out. And then Liz unveils the secret weapon and rips off the lower half of her dress!

Posted Image

HNGH. Everyone is distracted and The Megapowers dispose of Andre. They hit Ted with the Flying Elbow and Legdrop, and Jesse doesn't want to count to three, but Savage forces his hand down a 3rd time.
**3/4

Posted Image

They celebrate, and hoist Liz up on their shoulders. Savage takes her all on his though and Hogan suspiciously puts his hand on her ass for balance. Savage puts her down and holds up the title. And behind his back?

As stated, this episode is also gone.

9/3/88 - included Craig DeGeorge conducting an interview with new WWF IC Champion the Ultimate Warrior in which Jimmy Hart interrupted, distracting the Warrior long enough for the Honkytonk Man to sneak up behind him and attack the champion with his guitar; featured WWF President Jack Tunney announcing that Ron Bass was fined $10,000 for his attack on Brutus Beefcake the previous week:

The Powers of Pain defeated Pete Sanchez & Al Kirkland at 2:37 when the Barbarian pinned Sanchez following the running powerslam / diving headbutt combo

Dino Bravo (w/ Frenchy Martin) pinned Don Driggers at 2:03 with the side suplex

Jim Duggan pinned Joe Cruz at 2:25 with the running clothesline

Bad News Brown pinned Neal Rodgers at 2:42 with one foot on his opponent's chest after hitting the Ghetto Blaster
Rick Rude (w/ Bobby Heenan) pinned Reno Riggins at 1:20 with the Rude Awakening

The One Man Gang (w/ Slick) pinned Tommy Angel with the front suplex at 1:50; during the bout, a pre-recorded promo from Slick aired in which he said OMG would soon have a new look

Paul Roma pinned Barry Horowitz at 3:52 with a missile dropkick

WWF Superstars
September 10th, 1988
Providence, RI

Match #1: The British Bulldogs vs. Gene Ligon/Rusty Riddle

Solid squash, but not great or anything. Rocket Launcher Headbutt gives them the win.
*1/2

WWF UPDATE:
-Gene covers the Muraco/Valentine feud

Match #2: The Big Bossman w/ Slick vs. Paul Vandello
This is under 90 seconds, but Bossman makes the best of it. He hits the Bossman Slam to win.
*1/2

Bossman handcuffs him to the ropes and beats him with a nightstick.

Match #3: Tito Santana vs. Trent Knight
Tito randomly delivers a ton of matwork for 2-3 minutes and it's awesome. He picks up the pace with great babyface offense, and he wins with the greatest Flying Forearm ever.
**

EVENTS CENTER:
-Hacksaw Jim Duggan yells "2x4!" a lot and urges kids to carry 2x4s around too. He says he's hunting for a giant, and no matter how big or tough Andre is, he can't knock him down forever. He says he'll keep coming until he knocks him down, TOUGH GUY! HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
-Terry Taylor says some words before he ruins his career forever

Match #4: Rick Rude w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Tommy Angel
This is also only 90 seconds. Rude delivers the goods yet again, and wins with the Rude Awakening.
*1/2

Rude takes off his normal tights to reveal the Cheryl Roberts again. Roberts comes out and attacks him. He rips the tights off of Rude, and it is censored on TV.

EVENTS CENTER:
-Hulk Hogan is now wearing his delightfully retarded helmet. He says Jack Tunney is hard to find these days, because he's afraid of the war helmet, brother. He says he's declaring war on Jack Tunney and the entire WWF and he was the greatest champion of all time, and until someone beats him, he's still the champion in his mind, brother, and nobody is even close to his level (what a fucking piece of shit!). He says the Million Dollar Man Andres know that Hulk rules, brother, and he rips off his new HULK RULES shirt. He says once he starts chasing down the whole WWF, some of those dudes might run out of gas, so he took a fuel tank off one of his Harleys, brother, and he filled it with some Python Powder and dust from Mars, dude, and when they run out of gas, he'll slurp this thing down and take a double dose and then he'll give 'em a good dose of Hulkamania. He says on his road back to the WWF Title, things might get crazy and he doesn't want any excuses like someone got hit by a truck or fell into a plane engine, because that won't cut it, dude. WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO WHEN THE HULKSTER RUNS WILD ON YOU?!
-HO
-LY
-SHIT
-YEAH, FUCK THE TRUMP FLOOD PROMO, THAT IS THE MOST INSANE HOGAN PROMO EVER

Match #5: Outlaw Ron Bass vs. Joe Cruz
This is about 45 seconds, since Hogan took 5 minutes to ramble like a fucking lunatic. Bass wins with his Pedigree deal.
1/2*

Match #6: The Honky Tonk Man w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Dave Lanning

Honky now gets 3 minutes. I guess since his purpose has been served, they're now not even trying to make him look like a great wrestler, so they let him expose himself as being mediocre by having to fill 3 minutes of offense, and it is not good at all. He's fine bumping and stooging a lot, but he can't do that against a jobber, and his basic punch/kick stuff only works at around 90 seconds. He wins with the Shake, Rattle, and Roll.
3/4*

Honky gets on the mic and says that belt belongs to him and he's going to get it back.

Match #7: The Hart Foundation vs. Len Kruger/Tony Ulysses
The Harts got 3 minutes now, and they got to show off a lot of cool stuff. Neidhart especially has some great power spots, and they won with the Hart Attack.

The Hart Foundation vs. The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers, Boston (September 10th)
This pairing is fantastic and all, but it's kind of getting frustrating to see them have all these great matches and yet it never produces that all-time level great match that they should be capable of. This is the worst of them, since it's 12 minutes instead of 15 or 17. Which should logically mean less time on the admittedly entertaining bullshit stalling, but it means they trim shit out of the middle instead. They are at least moving on to new finishes, but the finish blows. A Rougeau accidentally hits a ref for the DQ.
**3/4

In the next match, something retardedly amazing happens:

Posted Image

Hulk Hogan vs. Ted DiBiase w/ Virgil, Boston (September 10th)
This was fun, but also problematic. I've wondered since 1984 when the point would come when Hogan stops giving a fuck and starts showing up solely to do his spots and poses. The answer was clearly on his 1988 vacation. This is the Hogan people always complain about. Cheating against a heel who hasn't done anything, big Hulk Up, etc. Also, after six months of the WWF Champion Randy Savage making Ted DiBiase look like his equal, Hogan dominates 70% of this match and sort of buries the actual WWF Title picture as a result. I mean, it's how 1980s WWF is and I get it and don't have a huge issue with it generally, but after a much more logical style of working things for the last six months, it's a bit upsetting. That being said, Ted made everything look awesome and Hogan was trying a little bit. Helmet stuff was beyond retarded. Hogan hits Ted with it and then hits a Legdrop to win.
**3/4

The Hart Foundation vs. The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers, Meadowlands (September 11th)

This is rare that a Meadowlands show is taped, and this is the only thing from it showing up. Quality stuff as usual. They go back to the finish they've been working for the last few months, instead of the horrible Boston finish from the night before. Still only 12 minutes, but that doesn't make it less great. Logical finish is what separates this match from the one the previous night. Bret has a Sleeper on and Jacques breaks it up with a Flying Double Axe for the win.

This happened for 2 minutes. Warrior wins with the Slam and Splash as usual. Honky does an inset promo and says this idiot has something that's rightfully his.
*

Craig has The Rougeaus on the stage. He asks if they're moving to the US. Jacques says ever since they said they would move to the US, they've gotten tons of fan mail and phone calls asking for them to be neighbors with everyone. Ray says they have a surprise and they need a manager to manage details for them, AND THEY BRING OUT JIMMY HART! YEAH! He says as a signing bonus, he's giving them each 25% of the money he's still making off of the Hart Foundation's contracts!

Match #2: Ted DiBiase w/ Virgil vs. Jon Latu
Quality squash yet again from Ted. He wins with the Million Dollar Dream.
*3/4

EVENTS CENTER:
-Andre and Heenan stand by. Heenan says Andre has never rightly been beaten and is the only undefeated WWF Champion ever. He says he is the one true phenom in sports, and Randy Savage and Hulk Hogan know it too.
-Randy Savage says he's gotta be ready for anybody. He says challengers get tougher and tougher from Bad News Brown to Andre the Giant, but the bigger they are, you know who it is, because he's ready for anybody, yeah!

Match #3: Dino Bravo w/ Frenchy Martin vs. Mario Mancini
This blew. Yep.

Overly long for Patera at nearly 4 minutes. He wins with the Full Nelson.

Nah.

EVENTS CENTER:
-Demolition and Mr. Fuji are standing by. Fuji says he opens door and pulls red carpet out for new victims. Smash says people beg to knock on the door, and they wait and wait, and when the door is open, they kick their teeth in. Ax says tons of people want in the door, and they have an open invitation.
-The Ultimate Warrior says you can feel it. He says the same sweat and blood in his body is the same in all of your bodies. He says they are the champions and says to jump on his back and hang on, because if they have to swim across the world, they will survive, he promises.

Match #4: Haku w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Martin Leroy
Haku gets lots of time to kill the jobber, and that he does. He wins with his amazing Superkick.
**

EVENTS CENTER:
-The Hart Foundation say it really makes them sick how Jimmy Hart is taking money out of their pockets. Bret says he's a bloodsucker and Anvil has to calm him down instead. Anvil says that's 50% harder they're going to throw and slam them and kill them, and Bret calms him down now and drags him off screen.
-Rick Rude says he made a fool out himself for thinking Jake would face him like a man and not pull his tights off from behind. He says he's gonna wear his tights wherever he pleases, and about his old lady, it won't take long before she comes back with him.

In a pretape, Bad News Brown has a WWF Magazine article saying why he should be #1 Contender. He tells Randy to stop hiding behind Elizabeth's skirt and to be a real Macho Man and give him the title shot that he deserves.

Match #5: The Powers of Pain w/ The Baron vs. Bob Emery/Chance McQuaid
Solid tag power squash. Barbarian carries the load. They win with the Powerslam/Diving Headbutt combo again.
*1/2

Craig brings Outlaw Ron Bass on the stage. He says Brutus had it coming, and whatever.

Match #6: Jake Roberts vs. George South
This happens for a while. Jake is good, but it's still a babyface Jake squash. He wins with the DDT.
*1/2

Match #7: The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Lanny Poffo/Burt Centeno

They get 3 minutes and it was a ton of fun. They combine awesome double teams with their incredible stalling and unnecessary gymnastics. The Rougeaus win with the Flying Dick Attack.

Demolition [c] w/ Mr. Fuji vs. The British Bulldogs [WWF Tag Team Championship], Philadelphia (September 24th)
This is still not as good as the first MSG match, but that seems to be a perfect place and time scenario where they got 20 minutes because they needed to fill some time. This is under 15 minutes, but the time is irrelevant because it fails due to being weird. The first half has the Bulldogs cheating a lot and making illegal tags and working the arm. I sort of like it, but at the same time, I don't. The story of Demolition has been different strategies against them, and it's why I've loved them so much. One of my favorite things ever in wrestling was Samoa Joe's ROH Title run, because you had guys trying new strategies to try and beat the unbeatable. Homicide tried brawling, Punk tried extending him, Daniels tried a ground game, and Danielson tried to take out the legs. Here, Strike Force have tried to contain them, the Bulldogs tried to extend them, and the Harts matched power with power. A natural step is an opponent who just cheats a ton. Except the heel/face divide there is all fucked up and the time to do that kind of match would be AFTER Demolition's face turn. As a result, this falls flat. They also get forced into a Heel in Peril match due to the time. Really more of a Bulldogs match than a Demolition match, and that's why it's only good. Because the Bulldogs were never a GREAT team. Some stuff happens, and Demolition uses the cane to win.
**3/4

Randy Savage [c] vs. Ted DiBiase [WWF Championship - Steel Cage Match], Philadelphia (September 24th)

As best I know, this is their final taped match in this feud, and it delivers. It's not as great as the MSG cage match, but that was 15-16 minutes and this is 12. So it's really only because of that. This has all the elements that made the MSG cage match so great. It starts and ends in a slugfest, and they have some impressive cage bumps in the middle. Virgil keeps getting involved, leading to Savage hitting Ted and Virgil on top of the cage with the noggin knocker, and climbing out to win.
***1/4

Randy Savage [c] vs. Andre the Giant [WWF Championship], MSG (September 29th)

Liz and Heenan are both at ringside as you would expect. This was also a ton of fun. Better than the LA match because they both seem to be trying harder, and now they have a better idea of what works in this pairing. Savage does all the heavy lifting, but Andre also does all his stuff well and is smart about it as always. Savage tries to stick and move, and eventually is caught. Andre's lazy cheating continues to rule. Andre is knocked to the floor after a series of Flying Double Axe Handles. He grabs Liz's ankle when she gets on the apron to escape him. Savage dives onto him, and they fight to a double count out.
**3/4

The Ultimate Warrior [c] vs. The Honky Tonk Man w/ Jimmy Hart [WWF Intercontinental Championship], MSG (September 29th)

This is only 3 minutes, thankfully. Not good, but it's better than SummerSlam by default. It's about 3 minutes of Warrior being Warrior and Honky bumping around. They go to the floor and as the ref draws near 10, Jimmy Hart jumps on Warrior's back and Honky rolls in to win by count out to ensure a rematch.

WWF Superstars
October 1st, 1988
Indianapolis, IN

Match #1: The Honky Tonk Man w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Phil Newkirk

This is 90 seconds of whatever. HTM wins with the Shake, Rattle, and Roll.
*

WWF UPDATE:
-Gene hypes up the Powers of Pain and shows clips of POP/Bolsheviks

Match #2: Koko B. Ware vs. Bob Emery
FUCK YEAH KOKO SQUASH! Koko looks very good as usual, and he wins with the Ghostbuster.
*3/4

Match #3: The Big Bossman w/ Slick vs. David Stoudemire

Only 90 seconds, but Bossman makes due and beats the shit out of the jobber in fantastic form. Bossman gets the win with the Bossman Slam.
*3/4

Post-match, Bossman handcuffs him to the ropes and beats him with the nightstick.

EVENTS CENTER:
-The Rockers explode with cliches about coming at you full force. YEP.
-Bad News Brown says he's undefeated and he's running out of opponents. He asks if he has to beat up referees and Jack Tunney next so he can have an opponent. He says when he gets in the ring, he has no mercy or sympathy and he takes no prisoners.
-Sean Mooney covers for BNB forgetting the angle he started last week on the show by saying Brown also wants a WWF Title shot

Match #4: Greg Valentine w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Reno Riggins
Valentine got two and a half minutes, and Riggins is a great jobber, so this ruled. Greg beats the fuck out of him, and wins with the Figure Four.
**

EVENTS CENTER:
-JYD says words. He's just about done, so fuck it.

Match #5: The British Bulldogs vs. Trent Knight/Johnny Zeigler
Quality squash, but still not great. The Bulldogs win with the Rocket Launcher Headbutt.
*1/2

Gene is on the stage, and he has Bobby Heenan, Hercules, Ted DiBiase, and Virgil. Gene says they had some kind of announcement, and asks what it is. Ted says he has a new possession to unveil. He says everything and everybody has a price for the Million Dollar Man. Gene asks what it is and Ted says several hundred years ago, lots of men had what he now has, but now, he's the only man in the world. He hands Bobby Heenan a briefcase and TED SAYS HE NOW OWNS A SLAVE! AMAZING! Gene is dumbfounded and Ted says he bought the greatest bodyguard, he's paid Bobby Heenan in the past for managerial advice, and now he has a slave, AND IT'S HERCULES! Herc is mad and Heenan says he's earned this and he'll be treated well. HERC GRABS HEENAN BY THE THROAT, BUT THEN DIBIASE KNOCKS OUT HERCULES WITH THE BRIEFCASE! They all leave him down on the stage like the piece of shit he is. With anyone other than Hercules, this would be an all time great angle, but it leads to matches involving Hercules, so fuck it.

Match #6: Brutus Beefcake vs. George South
Nah.

The first Mr. Perfect vignette debuts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Quxo730I7G0 FUCK YEAH!

Match #7: Akeem w/ Slick vs. Allen Kinsley
OMG still rules, despite the ridiculous outfit. He still is given almost no time, getting 30 seconds here, so that sucks. He wins with the Gourdbuster.

Randy Savage [c] vs. Akeem [WWF Championship], Paris (October 7th)
1988 is clearly the peak in terms of the amount of house show footage available, expanding from the MSG/Philly/Boston trio and adding occasional shit from LA, Meadowlands, random PTW tapings, and now international stuff. This is a lot of fun. Randy's getting awesome at the speed/power matches, and Akeem is more mobile than Andre, so they can do a little more with it since Akeem is willing to take huge bumps. He ends up shoving the referee down when beating on Randy in the corner for the lazy DQ finish.

Indianapolis, IN

Match #1: The Ultimate Warrior vs. Gene Ligon

This happens. Warrior is somehow getting worse on squashes. He wins with the Slam and Splash in under a minute.
3/4*

WWF UPDATE:
-They replay the DiBiase/Heenan/Hercules angle

Match #2: Dino Bravo w/ Frenchy Martin vs. John Latu
Hey, this also sucks!
1/2*

EVENTS CENTER:
-Slick and Akeem say jiving is what they're about, and the homeboys feel the pain. Slick calls Akeem a brother and Akeem does amazing fake black speech.
-Ken Patera speaks in a monotone voice

Match #3: The Rockers vs. Sandy Beach/Rusty Riddle
Great jobber names. This rules again, and The Rockers use a sweet Doomsday Crossbody for the win in their quest for a regular finishing move.
**

SURVIVOR SERIES: NOVEMBER 24TH!

Match #4: Bad News Brown vs. Warren Bianchi
Brown beats up Bianchi a lot. He wins with the Ghetto Blaster.
*3/4

EVENTS CENTER:
-Brutus Beefcake says words
-Bobby Heenan and Haku speak. Haku speaks in Tongan. Heenan says he is showing proper respect to the King by bowing his head when he speaks, and it's what all the humanoids should do whenever he walks to the ring.

Match #5: Don Muraco vs. Larry Stevens
Ugh, go away already and stop wasting Greg Valentine's time. Muraco wins with his shoddy ass Tombstone.
*1/4

It is time for the Brother Love show. IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE YOOOOOOOOOOOOU. He introduces his friend, Brother Bobby Heenan. Heenan says as the greatest manager in the world, he can take any average wrestler and make them a star, like he did to Hercules. So he went out, and he found a limited guy, and Terry Taylor comes on. He says he's not big like Andre or muscular like Rick Rude, and Terry agrees. He says he's not as good as King Haku, and Terry says he's a good wrestler, and Heenan says he will be. Heenan says he's going to take him to the top, because as limited as he is, he's a member of The Heenan Family now.

Match #6: The Junkyard Dog vs. Brian Costello
This sucked. THUMP.
DICK THUMP

Match #7: Demolition w/ Mr. Fuji vs. Tommy Angel/DJ Peterson

Another great squash, but it's only about 90 seconds this week. Decapitation ends it.
*3/4

They keep beating on them, until the Bulldogs come out to make the save like faggots.

Randy Savage [c] w/ Miss Elizabeth vs. Bad News Brown [WWF Championship], Boston (October 10th)
Good shit, and almost great. BNB pummels Savage with gut shits and knees and what not. Savage makes his awesome comeback, and it turns into a slugfest. It goes to the floor, and at around 7 or 8, Brown uses Elizabeth as a shield. Randy stops, and Brown throws Liz at him and rolls in at 10 to win by count out.
**3/4

The Hart Foundation vs. The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers [Special Referee - Brother Love], Boston (October 10th)

Solid as usual, but now only 10 minutes. They do their stuff, but there's too much focus on the referee. Love gets knocked out of the ring on accident, and Dave Hebner comes out. The Harts make a comeback, and Jacques gets beat with the Hart Attack.

Match #1: Rick Rude w/ Bobby Heenan vs. David Isley

This is now only a minute, so that is the bullshit. Rude wins with the Rude Awakening.
*

Rude makes out with a local wench post-match.

WWF UPDATE:
-Gene covers the Harts/Rougeaus feud

Match #2: The Blue Blazer vs. Joe Cruz
Fun 3 minutes. Owen flies around a lot, and wins with the Moonsault.
*3/4

Match #3: The Big Bossman w/ Slick vs. Jim Evans

This is also only a minute, so what the fuck? Bossman wins with a Bossman Slam.
*1/4

Bossman handcuffs the jobber to the ropes and beats him with the nightstick.

EVENTS CENTER:
-Dino Bravo is now feuding with Jim Duggan. Nah.
-The British Bulldogs say they will win the tag titles for Matilda. Not because you want to be champions or anything that goes with that, but for a fucking stupid dog.

Match #4: The Hart Foundation vs. Tom Stone/Rick Gantner
THE HART FOUNDATION MUSIC FINALLY DEBUTS! This gets 2-3 minutes as well and the rest of the squashes only get around 90 seconds, so clearly Stu Hart was in charge of match layout this week. This is great as usual, and the Harts win with the Hart Attack.
**

EVENTS CENTER:
-Don Muraco says words
-Andre and Heenan are standing by. Heenan talks about how big Andre is and how much he weighs and how big his hands are. He says Andre the Giant has NEVER lost in wrestling, despite what the biased media says. Andre says he put Hulk Hogan out and he will stay undefeated

Match #5: The Red Rooster w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Lanny Poffo
LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL. Taylor is solid as always, but that's all. He wins with a Sharpshooter.
*1/2

Jim Duggan is on the Brother Love Show, and it leads to a Bravo/Duggan war of words. NO THANK YOU.

Mr. Perfect plays chess: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFwWLye9jm8

Match #6: Outlaw Ron Bass vs. Mike Richards
This is also really short and Bass wins with the semi-Pedigree.
*

Match #7: Hercules vs. Barry Horowitz

Hercules still is terrible as a babyface. He wins with the Torture Rack.

Match #1: Haku w/ Bobby Heenan vs. David Isley

They get 2 minutes, so Haku gets to do lots of brutal offensive stuff. He wins with the Superkick.
**

It is now time for the Brother Love Show. IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOU. He brings out his guest, Hulk Hogan! He says Hogan has no love and since he lost his title, he's also lost all control, and he even has attempted to put his greasy hands on Brother Love. He says his benefactor wants Brother Love to spread the word of love has provided Brother Love with some protection AND SLICK AND THE BIG BOSSMAN COME ON! He says they have love in their hearts. Hogan tells Slick to stay in control because all these Hulkamaniacs have surrounded him and he's the judge and jury here, and they'll be singing the Hulkamania Prison Blues. He tells Love's benefactors to keep control because he's not a caged man. he says he's free. AND BOSSMAN HITS HIM IN THE THROAT WITH THE NIGHTSTICK! SLICK SPRAYS MACE IN HIS EYES! BOSSMAN HANDCUFFS HIM TO THE RAILING AND BEATS ON HIM! FUCK YEAH! SERVE HARD TIMES YOU EGOTISTICAL PIECE OF SHIT! And then of course because it's post title loss Hogan, NOBODY CAN EVER MAKE HIM LOOK WEAK BROTHER AND HOGAN GETS UP WITH THE RAILING AND NO-SELLS EVERYTHING TO RUN THEM OFF. Holy shit, he is the worst.

Lately, I've been thinking a lot about parallels between Cena/Punk and Hogan/Savage (and where other Cena opponents fit in as Hogan opponents. Edge is clearly Piper and I think H and Shawn both represent Andre, and I want to call Orton as Orndorff, but that doesn't totally fit, because Hogan and Paul never clicked on the level Cena and Orton did from 2007-9). Cena and Hogan in their peak years were sort of likeable. They gradually got more questionable, but you can see their actions and decisions and usually justify their behavior. Hogan might not have returned Orndorff's call right away or given Andre a title shot, but you can explain those away. Cena's done terrible things to Edge, Orton, and Wade Barrett, but they usually deserved it. But once they had been away from the WWF/E Title for a while and a new babyface champion was leading the company with the belt for a while, they both started to become totally unbearable pieces of shit. I find this really interesting.

Match #2: Tito Santana vs. Pork Chop Cash
HOLY FUCK PORK CHOP CASH IN WWF?! AMAZING! He was a pretty great Mid-South/Memphis wandering lower card journeyman. He's lost a lot of Tito gets 3 minutes to work, so it delivers. Tito wins with the Flying Forearm.
**

EVENTS CENTER:
-The Ultimate Warrior says this package did not come naturally, for he was sent in a capsule from a place long from here and he came here for one reason. TO ATTACK AND KEEP COMING. NOT TO WANT, BUT JUST TO GIVE. NOT TO WANT, BUT JUST TO SEND. SEND THE POWER OF THE WARRIOR DOWN THE THROATS OF EVERYONE IN THE WWF UNTIL THEY BECOME SICK OF IT. BECAUSE THIS FREAK OF NATURE RIGHT HERE IS JUST BEGINNING TO SWELL AND WHEN HE GETS BIG ENOUGH BROTHER, THERE WON'T BE ROOM ENOUGH FOR ANYBODY ELSE BUT HE AND THE WARRIORS, FLOATING THROUGH THE VEINS IN THE POWER OF THE WARRIOR
-As far as Warrior promos go, that's probably a #2 in infamy next to the "TEAR DOWN THE COCKPIT DOOR" promo
-Bad News Brown says he can't wait to take the WWF Title back to Harlem and he won't hide behind a skirt like the "Macho Man"

Bobby Heenan comes out by himself, and he introduces the two newest members of The Heenan Family, TULLY BLANCHARD AND ARN ANDERSON, THE BRAIN BUSTERS!

Match #3: The Brain Busters w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Tommy Angel/Bob Emery
AND YOUR 1989 TAG TEAM OF THE YEAR ARRIVES! I have gone on record years ago saying Arn and Tully are the best tag team ever. I don't know if I still feel that way after since being more exposed with the Hardys, Dudleys, AMW, Kawada/Taue, Demolition, Harts, etc. and given that their run was no more than 3 years tops. But they are a great great fucking team, considering they're probably 2 of the top 5 heels of the 1980s. Probably put Flair, Savage, and either Piper or Valentine up with them. ANYWAYS, they get 3 minutes and it's amazing. Arn hits the Spinebuster, and Tully follows with the Slingshot Suplex to win.
**

SURVIVOR SERIES UPDATE:
-Gene goes over the rules of SurSer matches and says matches will be announced in the upcoming weeks

Match #4: Jake Roberts vs. Barry Horowitz
ANOTHER good squash on this episode! Jake wins with the DDT.
**

WWF UPDATE:
-Gene goes over the Duggan/Bravo feud

Match #5: Akeem w/ Slick vs. Scott Hudson
Unfortunately, this is not Akeem beating the shit out of the future WCW announcer. Akeem is less violent now that he is not a one man gang, and retardedly, this means he gets more time now. Goddamnit. He wins with a Big Splash.
*1/4

Mr. Perfect plays golf: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_oe1YoGsVY

Match #6: The Powers of Pain w/ The Baron vs. Larry Stevens/Bob Blackburn

Really great all around episode.

Demolition [c] w/ Mr. Fuji vs. The Rockers [WWF Tag Team Championship], MSG (October 24th)
AND WE GET A NEW STRATEGY! Strike Force are the only team to fight Demolition that even resembles The Rockers, and their strategy of containment not only failed, but got them killed. So The Rockers rely on pure speed, since they have no other hope. It works sometimes, and they start to wear out Demolition, but their lack of experience is their undoing. They end up beating the fuck out of Shawn and he is a great FIP. Marty has a sweet hot tag, but the lack of experience has Shawn going out of the ring and distracting the ref, so Ax can sneak in a Northern Lariat from the apron on Marty, and Smash covers to win.
***

Randy Savage [c] vs. Andre the Giant [WWF Championship - Savage Loses Title on Count-Out], MSG (October 24th)

Great stip. Liz and Heenan are there. This is great because fuck it, I'm in a good mood and it was just on that borderline. Andre has a lot of variance in his lazy control now, with some great punches to the backs and various stretching holds. Savage has his best comeback yet against Andre, and they build to Andre's falling down really great. Savage misses the Flying Elbow, but then hits the Diving Double Axe to the floor. Andre is down, but Heenan tries to prevent Savage from getting back in, and the ref sees it and calls a DQ.
***

The Hart Foundation vs. The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers, MSG (October 24th)

This is their longest match yet, so they get a lot of time to do their stuff. Great matwork to begin, and even Neidhart gets in on that. Then the amazing Rougeau bumping, stalling, and stooging. They isolate Bret and have lots of great double team stuff. They also rule at the little things, like wildly punching Bret whenever he manages to escape from a hold. Bret has several awesome hope spots before he can actually make the tag. Neidhart has a great hot tag with his power spots and the Rougeaus take tons of huge bumps. The 20 minute time limit then expires.
***

Rick Rude vs. Jake Roberts w/ Cheryl Roberts [Finisher Match], MSG (October 24th)

The rules say they can only go for pins to end the match after their finishers, or as they call it in modern WWE, a normal match. This still isn't great, since I guess that just isn't going to happen for them, but it's their best match yet. They had some good reversals to the finishers, and Jake wins with the DDT.

One of the episodes I am missing:

10/29/88 - included Hercules as a guest of the Brother Love Show in which WWF World Champion Randy Savage & Miss Elizabeth came out, with Savage saying he wanted to shake Hercules hand, then doing so; featured the fifth 'Mr. Perfect' vignette of him playing basketball:

WWF Tag Team Champions Demolition (w/ Mr. Fuji) defeated John Latu & Mike Richards at 1:51 when Ax pinned Richards following the Decapitation

Greg Valentine defeated Scott Casey via submission with the shinguard-assisted figure-4 at 2:20

Shawn Michaels & Marty Jannetty defeated Sandy Beach & Brian Costello at 2:51 when Jannetty pinned Costello with a crossbody off the top as Michaels held Costello up in a suplex

The Red Rooster (w/ Bobby Heenan) defeated Reno Riggins via submission with the Scorpion Death Lock at 1:31

Bad News Brown pinned Red Tyler at 2:03 with the Ghetto Blaster

Brutus Beefcake defeated Gene Ligon via submission with the sleeper at 1:48
