WWF SATURDAY NIGHT'S MAIN EVENT
OCTOBER 29TH, 1987
BALTIMORE, MD

TONIGHT: RUDE VS. ROBERTS, HOGAN VS. HAKU, DEMOLITION VS. THE HART FOUNDATION

PROMOS:
-Jake says he knows everything about snakes, and wants to know if Rude can take pain like a man
-Heenan says Cheryl only gets pleasure from being close to the Ravishing One. Rude says Jake can wrap Damien around his neck if he wants, but he'll wrap Cheryl around his neck when it's all said and done.
-Slick says he's going to unveil America's best weapon in the war on crime, the Big Bossman. Bossman says the harder he hits you, the harder you'll land. Bossman says you have the right to suffer and feel pain, and if you wish to have an attorney present, he'll beat them too
-Demolition says they'll demolish the Foundation beyond any reconstruction
-Hulk Hogan says they'll find out who the real King is, and he's sat on his throne long enough, , and he has Elizabeth by his side tonight. She comes on and he poses. Hogan requests a match on a show Randy isn't booked for so that he can get Elizabeth to himself for the night. You devious motherfucker.

Match #1: Jake Roberts vs. Rick Rude
Cheryl Roberts and Bobby Heenan are there. Yet again, good not great. Good back work by Rude and Jake's selling is top notch yet again. Jake hits the DDT, and goes to remove the tights with Cheryl's face on them, but Heenan gets in and attacks him for the DQ.
**3/4

Jake goes after Bobby Heenan, AND ANDRE THE GIANT COMES OUT! OH SHIT! He throws Jake out and helps Rude on the mat, BUT JAKE PULLS DAMIEN OUT AND ANDRE FUCKING FAINTS! Jake holds Damien up over Andre.

In the back, Gene is with the Hart Foundation. Neidhart says they're sick of Jimmy Hart and his hyena voice. Bret said they got the titles for themselves and Jimmy Hart lost them the titles. Bret says they rely on speed and teamwork and there's no secret Jimmy Hart can tell Demolition. Neidhart says the only way Jimmy Hart can hurt someone is to manage them and then laughs his amazing laugh.

In the back, Jesse interviews Jimmy Hart, Demolition, and Fuji. Jimmy says the Hart Foundation was nothing before him and they're nothing without him. Fuji says knowledge his power, and Smash says he learns fast, and Ax says they win faster. Jimmy Hart then says his Fabulous Rougeaus will also be there to observe several broken Harts.

Match #2: Demolition [c] w/ Mr. Fuji & Jimmy Hart vs. The Hart Foundation [WWF Tag Team Championship]
This is good again, but now it's only 6 minutes, ending the streak of great Demolition defenses. Due to the time restriction, they sort of just have a match instead of another match based around strategy and what not. Doesn't mean it sucks, but it's not great. Anvil has cool power spots, Demolition has a good control seg, and Bret makes a sweet hot tag. The Rougeaus come out and when Neidhart gets back in, he tries to attack them, but it leaves him open to Smash to hit him with the megaphone for the win.
**3/4

A video on The Ultimate Warrior airs.

Video airs of Hogan injuring Harley Race on the 3/12/88 SNME and how Haku was named the new King in the summer.

In the back, Gene is with Heenan and Haku. Heenan says this match was made because King Haku decreed it and after what Hogan did to their friend Harley Race in March, Haku made a royal oath that he would avenge it. Gene asks Haku, and Heenan says he doesn't talk to peasants. Gene asks if Hogan wins, if he'll bow. Heenan asks him to show him to bow, so Gene does, and Heenan thanks him for respecting the King and the crown. Awesome.

In the back, Gene interviews Hogan and Liz. Gene asks about last week's incident and Hogan says Bossman beat him like a dog, but every dog has it's day. Gene asks about Haku, and Hogan says Heenan and Haku are making his Hulkamaniacs bow down, but nobody tells the Maniacs what to do but the ruler of that kingdom, and that's him. He says nothing concerns him when he has the inspiration of Miss Elizabeth, on loan from his Megapower partner, Randy Savage. You fucking prick, Hulk. They leave and Gene says all the kings and queens in history pale in comparison to those too. So you're in on this too, Gene? That's unfortunate.

Match #3: Hulk Hogan vs. Haku
Elizabeth and Heenan are there. This is 6 minutes and total Hogan Formula. Haku has better offense to fill the time with than a lot of other guys, but it's still nothing to write home about. Hogan kicks out of the Superkick, Hulks Up, and wins with the Legdrop.
**1/4

SURVIVOR SERIES: NOVEMBER 24TH!

Match #4: Dino Bravo w/ Frenchy Martin vs. Ken Patera
This is useless bullshit for 3 minutes. Dino wins with the Sidewalk Slam.
1/2*

In the back, Gene interviews Slick and The Big Bossman. Slick says he doesn't find men, men find him and that's because of his knowledge, ability, and mental ingenuity, now can you dig it? Bossman yells at Gene for only calling him "Bossman" and makes Gene spell Big Bossman. Bossman says to look in his eyes, and he likes to hurt people like he hurt Hulk Hogan. He says he sees no reason to change now, and Gene brings up his opponent, Jim Powers. Slick says if the brother's guilty, you never know. Gene asks what he's guilty of, and Bossman says "BREATHING!" They leave and Gene says Bossman would bring a box lunch to a lynching. AMAZING.

Match #5: The Big Bossman w/ Slick vs. Jim Powers
Great squash, and Powers has some fun jobber offense. Bossman wins in 3 minutes or so with the Bossman Slam.
**

Bossman handcuffs Powers to the ropes and beats him with the nightstick.

WWF Superstars
November 5th, 1988
Ft. Wayne, IN

This episode is only 30 minutes long, so something is missing.

Match #1: The Ultimate Warrior vs. George South
This happens. Typical Warrior. He wins with the Slam and Splash.
*

It is time for The Brother Love Show. He brings out his benefactor, Brother Million Dollar Man and Virgil. They come out and Love says he bought a man, but a man who had no gratitude. Ted says that's right and since the first day he stepped foot in the WWF, he's always been able to get what he wanted. He says he's already bought and paid for Hercules, and he will soon understand that he is his slave. He asks who cares what Randy Savage thinks about Hercules and Love says Hercules is now on the bandwagon of The Megapowers. Ted brings out his Survivor Series team, and it's Big Bossman, Akeem, Red Rooster, and Haku, along with Slick and Heenan.

Match #2: Dino Bravo w/ Frenchy Martin vs. Jim Evans
This sucked again.
1/4*

EVENTS CENTER:
-Mooney announces the SurSer card
-Warrior/Brutus/Blue Blazer/Sam Houston/Jim Brunzell vs. HTM/Ron Bass/Danny Davis/Valentine/Bad News Brown. Poor Valentine.
-THE HART FOUNDATION/THE ROCKERS/POWERS OF PAIN/BULLDOGS/YOUNG STALLIONS VS. DEMOLITION/ROUGEAUS/BRAIN BUSTERS/CONQUISTADORS/BOLSHEVIKS HOLY FUCK
-Andre/Rude/Bravo/Mr. Perfect/Race vs. Jake/Duggan/Tito/Patera/B. Brian Blair
-And in the main event, The Megapowers/Hercules/Koko/Hillbilly Jim vs. Ted/Bossman/Akeem/Rooster/Haku

Match #3: Mr. Perfect vs. Chris Zama
Hennig gets to show off a lot for 2 minutes, and he's fucking Mr. Perfect. So this is great. He wins with the Perfect Plex.
**

Match #4: Outlaw Ron Bass vs. Billy Bowman

Short and useless. I tire of Ron Bass squashes.
1/2*

Looks like the rest of the promos are what got cut out.

Match #5: The Big Bossman w/ Slick vs. Rusty Riddle
Bossman gets time to get real brutal and violent, and it rules. Bossman wins with the Bossman Slam.
**

Bossman handcuffs the jobber to the ropes, and beats him up with the nightstick.

Randy Savage [c] w/ Miss Elizabeth vs. Bad News Brown [WWF Championship - Title Can Change Hands On Count-Out], Boston (November 5th)
Not as good as the October match, but this is also only 7 minutes. They do the same general things, and the only real flaw in their game is the lack of time making things seem kind of rushed. Brown's work on the midsection rules, Savage's comeback is great shit as always, and the final brawl portion delivers like last time. Savage rolls through a slam with a cradle to finally win a title defense by pinfall.

WWF Superstars
November 12th, 1988
Baltimore, MD

Match #1: The Rockers vs. The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers w/ Jimmy Hart

This is 3 minutes and more of an angle than anything, but god damn, was it a fun 3 minutes. The Rougeaus go to use the megaphone, so The Hart Foundation comes out to attack them and the ref throws the match out as a result.
**

WWF UPDATE:
-Gene runs down the SurSer card

Match #2: Koko B. Ware vs. Mike Williams
Koko gets time to shine again, and has lots of cool offense. Koko wins with the Ghostbuster.
**

They replay Jake/Rude and the post-match from SNME in full, which kills like 15 minutes.

Match #3: The Brain Busters w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Al Kinsey/Mario Mancini
This is great, yet again. Literally everything Arn and Tully do has a purpose, is intense as fuck, and looks incredibly painful. Arn hits the Double A Spinebuster, and Tully then hits Kinsey with the Slingshot Suplex for the win.
**

The Brother Love show happens. He has Team Honky Tonk Man on, and they say nothing of any interest.

Match #4: Hercules vs. Al Navarro
This blows again. Herc wins with the Torture Rack.
1/4*

Match #5: Akeem w/ Slick vs. Tommy Caruso

Decent squash. I'm glad Akeem is getting more of a spotlight now, but his work is far inferior as Akeem :( He wins with a Big Splash.
*1/2

Another pretape airs where Bad News Brown calls out Randy Savage to stop hiding behind Elizabeth, and says maybe Jack Tunney is the one protecting him.

Match #6: Jim Duggan vs. Bob Blackburn
For whatever reason, Duggan now gets 3 minutes. Like I've said before about Duggan and HTM, they're good at the limited things they do, but asking them to fill that much time with pure offense isn't going to work. Duggan wins with the clothesline.

Match #1: The Rockers vs. Gene Ligon/George South

The Rockers get 3 minutes and put on a fantastic showcase of teamwork and highspots. Nobody should be surprised that this is great. Weirdly, they use a Canadian tag staple with the Superkick into a Bridging German Suplex by Marty for the win.
**

WWF UPDATE:
-Gene plugs Survivor Series again
-Clips air of fans talking about the PPV

Match #2: Ted DiBiase w/ Virgil vs. Scott Hudson
Typical Ted squash. Very good, technically perfect, but lacks that certain something needed for a great squash. Ted wins with the Million Dollar Dream.
*3/4

EVENTS CENTER:
-Mr. Perfect promises to lead his Survivor Series team to victory, because he is absolutely perfect

Match #3: Tito Santana vs. Steve Lombardi
This was great. Lombardi is willing to go on the mat with Tito for 2 minutes of the 3 this went, so that was entertaining. Tito then picks up the pace with some classic babyface offense, and he wins with the Flying Forearm.
**

Match #4: The Red Rooster w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Rusty Riddle

Taylor still has not dyed his hair. He does stuff for 90 seconds, and whatever. He wins with his shitty looking Sharpshooter.
*1/4

EVENTS CENTER:
-Team Andre, with Dino, Rude, Race, and Perfect cuts another promo. Dino Bravo yells a lot about how Duggan is an idiot and for some reason, does all the talking for his team, and gets almost everyone's name wrong, particular "Rude" Rick Ravishing. Great work, idiot.
-Jake promos for his team. He says they all have something to give, in the spirit of the day. Duggan says they won't work together perfectly, but they're all gonna go crazy and they're gonna win and survive, TOUGH GUY! HOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Match #5: The Hart Foundation vs. Johnny Zeigler/Larry Stevens
The Harts get 3 minutes again, so they deliver their usual great squash. Power spots, precision blows, etc. The Hart Attack gives them the win.
**

It is time for the Brother Love Show, and he brings out Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth! Love says he thinks he's bitten off more than he can chew, and runs down the opposing team's line up. He then brings up Brother Hulkster and says he will once again learn a lesson. Savage says no way, and says if he wants to talk about Hulk Hogan, then he can come get him, but he's talking to the WWF Champion now. Love says that won't be necessary and his little female manager won't be able to help. Savage tells him to shut up and listen to the sound, and he brings out Hulk Hogan, and Hogan chases Brother Love off.

Match #6: Brutus Beefcake vs. The Honky Tonk Man w/ Jimmy Hart
Thankfully, this is under 2 minutes. Brutus gets the Sleeper on, and then Ron Bass comes out to attack him for the DQ.
1/2*

The rest of their teams now run out to engage in a SHOW. ENDING. BRAWL.

WWF SURVIVOR SERIES 1988
NOVEMBER 24TH, 1988
RICHFIELD, OH

Match #1: The Ultimate Warrior/Brutus Beefcake/Sam Houston/Jim Brunzell/The Blue Blazer vs. The Honky Tonk Man/Greg Valentine/Outlaw Ron Bass/Bad News Brown/Danny Davis w/ Jimmy Hart [Elimination Match]

Better than it had any right to be. This was thankfully the shortest match of the night, but it was still 18 minutes. They do a better job of last year than getting the trash out of the ring early, although not as well as they ideally could. Brutus eliminates Davis with the Sleeper within a minute. Thankfully, Valentine stays in through the entire match, since he's one of the only guys who can guide this group of idiots (and Owen Hart). Owen and Valentine have a ton of cool matwork and highspots together. Brown has some decent spots, and he also helps trim the fat when he beats Brunzell with the Ghetto Blaster in around 5 minutes. Valentine and Brown wreck the shit of all the motherfuckers, but Valentine accidentally hits BNB, so he walks out and is counted out like a bitch. Sam Houston gets in finally, only to be quickly beat by Bass to even it up. We get another good extended Owen/Valentine run for a few minutes, until Valentine beats Owen with the Figure Four. Brutus and Honky slow the match WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY down with their awful fighting. They go to a double count out! YEAH! FUCK YOU BOTH! Valentine tries to carry Warrior, but then Warrior Warriors Up. He beats Bass with a Flying Double Axe Handle, and then does the same to Greg for the win. Warrior's Double Axe looks like absolute shit, so I'm hoping he drops that as soon as possible and focuses solely on the Shoulderblocks/Slam/Splash stuff, since that's all he can do well.
**1/2

Match #2: The Hart Foundation/The Rockers/The British Bulldogs/The Powers of Pain/The Young Stallions vs. Demolition/The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers/The Brain Busters/The Conquistadors/The Bolsheviks w/ Mr. Fuji, Jimmy Hart, Bobby Heenan, & Slick [Tag Team Elimination Match]

This is really great, but as you expect for 42 minutes, there's patches of downtime in the middle. There's so much talent here that pretty much every pairing has one good wrestler in, and the best ones have two all time greats facing off. Rockers vs. Arn/Tully gets a ton of play early on, and that's on the short list for best tag pairings in WWF history (Strike Force/Islanders, Steiners/Headshrinkers, Hardys/E&C/Dudleys, BookDust/Vitamin C, WGTT/Guerreros, MNM/Londrick). First 5 minutes is super fast and wild, and unfortunately, Bret eliminated Ray Rougeau first with a cradle, and the Rougeaus are gone. This was done to avoid a Rougeaus/Bulldogs fight in the back, as the Rougeaus left after they were eliminated, and this is the Bulldogs' last night. Fucking Dynamite Kid. Anyways, we now start to tease Demolition/POP a lot. AND ROMA PULLS OFF THE MARK JINDRAK LEAP TO THE TOP ROPE INTO AN EFFORTLESS TURNING CROSSBODY SPOT!? HOLY SHIT! POWERS OF PAIN VS. DEMOLITION HAPPENS AND POWERS OF PAIN OUTPOWERS AND DOMINATES DEMOLITION! HOLY FUCK! This is the only time we ever see Brain Busters vs. Bulldogs, and it delivers. Suddenly, the Bulldogs are now working like it's 1985 again. None of the laziness of the last few years, as they take GIGANTIC bumps all match. Boris rolls through a Crossbody from Jim Powers to even it up. More happens, and Boris gets beaten with a sunset Flip by Marty! YEAH! TAKE OUT THE TRASH! POP dominate now, and Tully is a grade A chickenshit. Tully and Bret have a great exchange and Bret hits a German Suplex, BUT HIS SHOULDERS WERE DOWN AND TULLY GOT ONE UP! THE HARTS ARE OUT! Rockers and Busters fight again, and since it's the 80s, the ref is a pussy and calls a Double DQ on them for brawling in the ring, so they're both out. Bulldogs vs. Demos is pretty fun and Dynamite misses a Diving Headbutt. Smash then wipes him out with a clothesline to eliminate him. CONQUISTADORS STILL ALIVE! YEAH! Mostly POP vs. Demolition here. AND FUJI PULLS DOWN THE TOP ROPE TO LOWBRIDGE SMASH OUT?! WHAAAAAAAAAAAT? SMASH IS COUNTED OUT! DEMOLITION GOES AFTER FUJI AND THEY SLAM HIM ON THE FLOOR! FUCK YEAH DEMOLITION! They leave, AND THE CONQUISTADORS MAKE A HELL OF A RUN AT IT! FUCK YEAH! SOME NEARFALLS EVEN! FUJI TRIPS A CONQUISTADOR FROM THE FLOOR AND BARB HITS A DIVING HEADBUTT TO WIN!
***1/4

THE POWERS OF PAIN CELEBRATE WITH FUJI! SON OF A BITCH! Demolition runs down, and they run off the new heel trio. Great double turn.

In the back, Mooney is with Bad News Brown. He says he's been undefeated since he came to the WWF, and he don't need no partners. He tells all the beer bellied sharecroppers to listen up because there was a conspiracy tonight to try and take his undefeated streak away from him, but it didn't work. He says he won the battle royal at WrestleMania IV and he wants to know why he hasn't had his title shot yet.

In the back, Gene talks to Mr. Fuji and Powers of Pain. Fuji says he made the Demolition and he made them champions, and their head got swelled up. He says they thought they knew more than the master, so he found these two and HE brought them to the WWF, and they will demolish the Demolition! Warlord says they lost Fuji and they'll lose the belts soon. Gene says Demolition and Fuji helped each other, and Fuji says he did everything for them, but they disrespected his discipline, so they will pay.

1989 ROYAL RUMBLE: JANUARY 15TH!

Match #3: Jake Roberts/Tito Santana/Jim Duggan/Ken Patera/Scott Casey vs. Andre the Giant/Mr. Perfect/Rick Rude/Harley Race/Dino Bravo w/ Bobby Heenan & Frenchy Martin [Elimination Match]
They actually got a fucking jobber to replace Blair! Amazing! This is great surprisingly, but not as great as the tag match. And how could anything be? Jake, Tito, Perfect, Andre, Race, and Rude all put in good showings. Andre is 80s heel Andre. I love his lazy but smart heel cheating. Rude eliminates Patera first with the Rude Awakening. Patera is out before a legitimate jobber. AMAZING. Casey is then out next after Bravo's Sidewalk Slam. Bravo does his best to totally ruin this, but he's the only bad one left, so he can't do it. Tito does a great job as ring general, holding everything together. Andre sells a lot for Tito, and Harley vs. Tito RULES. Tito hits the FLYING FOREARM AND ELIMINATES RACE! WHOA! I expected him to be fodder, so that was nice. Andre vs. Tito happens again, but this time, Tito is caught. Andre hits the headbutt, and then hits TREMORS~ for the elimination on Tito. :( Andre starts to dominate now, and they isolate Jake. He's a pretty great FIP again. Duggan gets the hot tag, and he ends up hitting Bravo with the 2x4 for a DQ. AND JAKE IS ALL ALONE! He does a great job with it, and yeah. Him vs. Perfect is the best, and him vs. Rude also delivers again. Dino still sucks. He eliminates Rude with the DDT, but then Andre is in, and is mad about the snake. Andre is DQ'd for refusing to stop choking Jake, and then Perfect steals the pin and Perfect and Dino are the survivors.
**3/4

Jake runs off the heels with Damien.

In the back, Gene interviews Team DiBiase. Slick says the big hour is near and the Brain and himself have put their wits together to come up with a system of elimination. Ted says Thanksgiving is useless, but Hercules will thank him tonight for showing him his position in life, as his slave. Akeem says they're all survivors. Heenan says he'll show proper respect to the King and so will everyone else, and they all bow. Gene asks if the Rooster can talk, and he says he can and he can also wrestle, and says he won't let Bobby down. Big Bossman says he and Hogan's paths are gonna cross again and he's gonna hurt him bad like the dog he is.

Hulk Hogan is the only one in the entire night who refuses to enter with the rest of his team, and has to have his own entrance.

Match #4: The Megapowers/Koko B. Ware/Hercules/Hillbilly Jim w/ Miss Elizabeth vs. Ted DiBiase/The Big Bossman/Akeem/Haku/The Red Rooster w/ Slick, Virgil, & Bobby Heenan [Elimination Match]
Fun match. Probably too long at 30 minutes, but Savage did a great job as the anchor and really carried this. Ted helped a lot for the 17 minutes he was in too. Focus is Hogan/Bossman, which gradually becomes Megapowers vs. Twin Towers. Savage gets to shine a lot in the first third, and eliminates Taylor first with a Flying Elbow in about 6 minutes. Heenan yells at Red Rooster for being a loser. Savage vs. Ted gets a lot of play too, since that's a guaranteed great match. Thankfully, Jim is barely in. He does a few things, but Akeem quickly beats him with the Big Splash. Koko has a good little run of offense, but is eliminated after the Bossman Slam. Ted and Bossman then bump around and make Hercules look competent before Virgil causes a distraction, and Ted rolls him up to eliminate him, so it's down to just Hogan and Savage on the other end. Soon after that though, Herc distracts Ted, and Savage schoolboys Ted to eliminate him! Savage vs. Bossman really is fantastic, as is Savage vs. Haku. Both operate as these gritty slugfest-y type fights. Savage is isolated. HE is taken to the floor and as Haku and Akeem do stuff, Bossman attacks Hogan! BOSSMAN HANDCUFFS HOGAN TO THE BOTTOM ROPE AND ATTACKS HIM WITH THE NIGHTSTICK! YEAH! FUCK YOU HOGAN! Unfortunately, this means Bossman gets counted out. :( We go back in, and Savage is still isolated. He makes comebacks, but can't tag out. Akeem and Haku double team him a lot, and the ref warns them. Akeem shoves the ref down, and is DQ'd! SO HE HITS SAVAGE WITH THE BIG SPLASH! HAKU COVERS, BUT SAVAGE GETS HIS ARM UP! YEAH! Slick taunts Hogan and Liz with the handcuff keys and Savage is injured now. His selling is fantastic. He hangs on long enough and manages to send Haku into Slick on the apron! LIZ GRABS THE KEYS AND FREES HOGAN! Savage still has to fight back, and he makes the tag! Hogan hits some punches, the Big Boot, and the Legdrop to win.
***

Hogan celebrates like he just won the World Series, despite being in there for all of 10 seconds at the end while Randy had to hang on for the last 13 minutes by himself, about 5 of those while Hogan was handcuffed, and Savage also had to create the opening for Hogan to get free. How does this piece of shit Hogan repay his best friend?

Posted Image

Hogan picks up Liz and twirls her around, and holds her around his waist for a few seconds. After seeing it once at SummerSlam, Savage could put it off as an accident. It happens, you let it go. But twice? Nah, fuck that. Savage is pissed, but Liz quickly gets down once Hogan lets go, and rushes over to Randy, and raises both of their arms. Savage is still upset and tries to talk to Hogan about it, but Hogan ignores him and celebrates at the show ends.

I remember watching WrestleMania V as a kid, and the only build up they showed was Hogan helping Savage win the title, and then Savage turning on Hogan for carrying Liz to the back. Savage's turn seemed totally illogical and insane. But seeing the whole picture? What they don't show you is Hogan now making Liz his manager without asking Randy, grabbing her ass at SummerSlam, the insane promo where he says all other WWF Champions are nothing because he never lost the belt, basically slapping Randy in the face, and now this self aggrandizing display, taking Randy's spotlight and groping his wife after Randy did most of the work winning them the match.

Randy is a saint for not already having beaten the shit out of Hogan.

Yeah, Hogan had it coming. You can't even argue otherwise.

Tito Santana vs. Greg Valentine, MSG (November 26th)
There's a serious case to be made for this as the best pairing of the 80s in the WWF. Savage vs. Tito and Savage vs. Steamboat are the only other serious contenders. Savage vs. Steamboat just isn't as good as the other two, as much of a sacred cow as it is. Savage/Tito's highs are better than Tito/Valentine, but this has the edge in consistency. Whatevs. This is a 20 minute draw, which means it's Tito vs. Valentine for 20 minutes. They work holds, they punch each other a lot, and they chop the shit out of each other. It's generally what I want in my pro wrestling. Tito sells really well and has one of his great fiery comebacks. He hits the Flying Forearm, but Valentine rolls out. They keep going, and Valentine starts to work to the Figure Four as the clock runs out.
***

Hulk Hogan vs. The Big Bossman w/ Slick, MSG (November 26th)

This is carried almost entirely by Bossman's amazing bumping. Slick has some great interference and stooging spots, but Hogan is content to do his shit. Camera catches tons of daylight on his punches. I miss 1986-early 88 Hogan. Can we have him back? Bossman's control seg ruled, and then he took some huge bumps for Hogan's comeback. Bossman takes it to the floor and tries to cuff Hogan to the ropes, but Hogan cuffs Bossman to the ropes instead! He gets back in and wins by count out.

WWF Tag Team Champions: Demolition, Since 3/27/1988 - LONGEST REIGNING CHAMPIONS CURRENTLY

WWF Superstars
November 26th, 1988
Baltimore, MD

Match #1: Jake Roberts vs. John Latu

Good stuff. Jake is Jake and he wins with the DDT.
*1/2

It is time for the Brother Love Show, and he brings out WWF President Jack Tunney! Love calls him lazy and useless and says he's done absolutely nothing since taking office. He brings out a man who's done something, and brings on Bad News Brown. He says he's finally caught up with Jack Tunney, and for the last 5 months, he's been calling him and sending messages, and he has not gotten a response. He's here in front of the beer bellied sharecropper and Spanglish cockroaches around the world and he wants to know why he's not the #1 Contender. Tunney says he's not protecting anyone, and Brown says ever since Macho Man won the World Title, Tunney's been driving nicer cars and in a nicer house and asks if there's some kind of deal there. Tunney says no, and Brown nods. He says he can be a little slow, but it finally dawned on him what's going on, and asks if it's Elizabeth doing "favors" for him, and that's why he's protecting them. Tunney asks who he thinks he is to speak to him like that and touches him, so Brown grabs him by the tie and forces him down on his knees, and says nobody puts their hands on Bad News, and he leaves.

Match #2: Mr. Perfect vs. David Stoudemire
Quality work here yet again, as Perfect gets 3 minutes to show off. He wins with the Perfect Plex.
**

EVENTS CENTER:
-Brutus says words
-So does Outlaw Ron Bass
-Master's cum is a gift

Match #3: The Ultimate Warrior vs. Barry Horowitz
This happened, and Barry did a good job carrying him. Slam and Splash wins for Warrior.
*1/2

EVENTS CENTER:
-Tito Santana talks about how heels are mean lowlifes, and he doesn't like it. Well, nobody ever said he was a good promo.
-The Rougeaus brag about how the Harts are losers, but now Jimmy's told them all of their weaknesses, so they'll never beat them

Match #4: Rick Rude w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Billy Woods
Good squash. Rude has graduated from 90 seconds to about a minute forty five. He wins with the Rude Awakening.
*1/2

Rude makes out with a local post-match.

WWF UPDATE:
-Gene recaps the Demolition/Powers of Pain double turn

Match #5: Haku w/ Bobby Heenan, Ted DiBiase, & Virgil vs. Hercules
Haku gets a decent 2 minutes out of Herc. Interference happens, so Herc clears the ring with his chain for the DQ.

Match #6: The Young Stallions vs. Bubba Kirk/Max McGiver

This is all of a minute, before Powers wins with a Missile Dropkick.
3/4*

Match #7: The Big Bossman w/ Slick vs. David Isley

Another great 3 minute Bossman squash. He keeps yelling for Hogan. He wins with the Bossman Slam.

WWF SATURDAY NIGHT'S MAIN EVENT
NOVEMBER 26TH, 1988
SACRAMENTO, CA

TONIGHT: SAVAGE/ANDRE FOR THE BELT! DUGGAN VS. ZUKHOV IN A FLAG MATCH! HERC VS. VIRGIL! SQUASHES FROM WARRIOR AND THE ROUGEAUS! THE BROTHER LOVE SHOW!

PROMOS:
-Warrior yells that he has war paint on and he does not believe in peace or Thanksgiving, and he's going to spoil their Thanksgiving
-Heenan says their job is to get the belt back around the waist of the biggest man in the world. Andre says he wants his belt back, and Heenan says fee, fi, foe, fan, he smells defeat for the Macho Man!
-Randy Savage says tonight is the night he faces his biggest threat ever. He's over 500 pounds of terror and the most horrifying athlete ever, and he'll face Andre and beat him. He says Andre is strong like Goliath, but he's got his slingshot ready, YEAH!
-Ted DiBiase says he doesn't believe in giving, he believes in buying and selling, because it's the American way. He says Hercules is already bought and paid for, and Virgil is going to teach him a lesson.
-Hulk Hogan wishes everyone a happy thanksgiving and says he's going to speak to Brother Love tonight

Match #1: The Ultimate Warrior [c] vs. Super Ninja w/ Mr. Fuji [WWF Intercontinental Championship]
Total squash for Warrior. Goes about 2 minutes, and Warrior wins with the Slam and Splash.
*

Video airs of the Hercules/DiBiase feud.

In the back, Jesse talks to Ted DiBiase. Ted says Hercules is being anti-American by refusing to honor this contract, and he's going to take possession of what's his. Jesse asks why Ted doesn't do it himself, and Ted says he would never touch a slave, and asks if Rockerfeller would pump his own oil or if Trump would build his own skyscraper, and says that's for people like Virgil to do.

Match #2: Hercules vs. Virgil w/ Ted DiBiase
SO BAD. It was only 3 minutes, but still terrible. Herc wins with a Powerslam.
1/2*

Ted yells at Virgil for losing.

Video airs of the Jake/Andre incident at the last SNME.

In the back, Gene asks Andre and Heenan about the fear of snakes. Heenan says to never talk about snakes in front of Andre again. He then asks about the match next, and Andre says he's the champion. Heenan says Andre was ripped off in february and the belt was stolen from him, but they'll take the belt from him tonight. He says Heenan has momentum, and he's a better champion than Hogan for how frequently he's defended the title, but Andre squashed Hogan and all of Randy's momentum won't help when he runs into a 7'4'' 500 pound brick wall.

In the back, Gene is with Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth. Gene asks why Savage would risk it against Andre the Giant. Randy says that's exactly what he's trying to say, and Andre is the 8th Wonder of the World and 500 pounds. He says to be a great champion, he has to beat the Giant, and Hulk Hogan was a great champion, and he beat the Giant. He says he works for the fans and the title and he went to Hogan and most importantly, he went to Elizabeth, and they all know he can beat him. Gene brings up Bobby Heenan and Savage says he knows him to be a two legged snake and he'd be real surprised if Andre isn't afraid of him too! YEAH! THE TIME IS NOW, ELIZABETH, DOWN THAT AISLE, TO BEAT THE GIANT! YEAH!

Match #3: Randy Savage [c] vs. Andre the Giant [WWF Championship]
Elizabeth and Heenan are both there. This rules again, although I probably like it more than most since I like Andre's heel schtick more than most. Savage bumps around like a lunatic, and has awesome comebacks. Jake Roberts comes out and puts the bag under the ring, before the ref makes him go to the back. Savage gets his most offense in yet, and Jesse and Vince do an awesome job putting over how he's gotten even more offense in against Andre than Hogan did. Andre avoids the Flying Elbow though, and he sees the bag now. He makes Heenan take it to the back, but this brings out Jake. Savage fights Andre again, but he shoves him away and now Jake attacks Andre for the DQ. This worked to further the Andre/Jake feud, while also putting Savage over huge as the match ends where it looks like he'll probably be able to beat Andre.
**3/4

Savage throws Heenan into Andre to knock Andre into the ropes where he's trapped. Savage and Liz chase Heenan, and Jake pulls Damien out of the bag, but Andre gets free and runs away before Jake can throw Damien on him again. Jake leaves, and Savage and Elizabeth celebrate with the WWF Title.

Match #4: Jim Duggan vs. Boris Zukhov w/ Slick [Flag Match]
This happens for 2 minutes. Duggan wins with a clothesline.
3/4*

Footage airs of Bossman attacking Hogan on the set of the Brother Love Show in October.

The Brother Love Show is set up in the ring this time. He introduces a man who is a tremendous asset to the WWF, a Real American, and he brings out BROTHER DOCTOR OF STYLE, Slick! In the back, Hogan is mad and says he thought he was the guest. Love tries to interview Slick, and Hulk Hogan comes out! Love says he is in control tonight and he's not afraid of him. He asks how it felt when Big Bossman whipped him and handcuffed him, and Love doesn't let him answer. Slick joins in too and says Hogan is a criminal, and says all it takes is one phone call to make it happen again. Hogan then throws Slick out and clotheslines Brother Love out. Hogan then poses for like 3 minutes, because beating up a skinny manager and a fat talk show host is worthy of that.

In the back, Jesse interviews Jimmy Hart and the Rougeaus. Jimmy Hart says the Rougeaus have officially moved to the US, and they are now good old American boys! Jesse asks where and Jimmy says they moved to Memphis, TN of course, and Ray says to come visit them and they can have grits and mint julips. Jesse says that sounds great, but Jimmy says it's FABULOUS!

Match #5: The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers w/ Jimmy Hart vs. The Young Stallions
This was a great 3 minutes. Powers' jobber offense is great again, and the Rougeaus have cool double teams, and they win with the Flying Dick Attack.
**

In the back, Jesse interviews Andre the Giant and Bobby Heenan. Jesse says he can't believe Andre is afraid of snakes, but Andre grabs him and yells that he's not afraid. He tells Jake to come and face him without his snake and then they would see who was afraid, and says to fight him like a man.

In the back, Gene interviews Jake. He says the Giant has a small problem with snakes. He says a man's strength is being able to think and act, but a snake doesn't have to think. They sense the fear, and when the fear is there, they can do anything they want. He says he smells the fear, and he can do anything to him.

In the back, Gene interviews Hulk Hogan. Hogan says it felt good presiding as Judge Hogan over the Brother Love show, and being the executioner turned him on too. He says he found them guilty as charged, dude, and with this Ronald Reagan/George Bush transition of power, it's the perfect window for truth, justice, and the Hulk Hogan law to take over, man. He says the only thing he feels sorry about is that the main criminal, Big Bossman, wasn't on the stand. He says when you step on the stand and he passes that guilty verdict, it won't be the chair or the gas chamber, but he's gonna put a lifelong dose of Hulkamania, dude, and he might put the handcuffs on and give him a view downtown, brother. Did Hulk Hogan just threaten to mouth rape Big Bossman? WHATCHA GONNA DO WHEN JUDGE HOGAN PRESIDES ON YOOOOOU?!

Match #1: Brutus Beefcake vs. Chuck Campbell

Nah.

WWF UPDATE:
-Gene recaps the Andre/Jake feud so far, and plays the last several minutes and post-match of Savage/Andre

Match #2: Dino Bravo w/ Frenchy Martin vs. Ricky Ataki
Wow, so this episode is terrible so far. Dino wins with the Sidewalk Slam.
1/2*

Match #3: Harley Race vs. Jim Gorman

Race is all alone now, and has a big scar down his stomach. Haku does an inset saying that Race will bow at his feet like everyone else, because he is the king. Race delivers his usual really brutal squash. Painful knees and headbutts, and all the throws looked great. He wins with the sort of Fisherman's Buster.
**

EVENTS CENTER:
-Tito Santana still does not like heels
-Danny Davis is still here, I guess

Match #4: The Hart Foundation vs. Barry Horowitz/Iron Mike Sharpe
JOBBER SUPERTEAM RIGHT HERE. They make the Foundation look even better than they already are. And yeah, Bret and Anvil look great as always. Barry gets beat after the Hart Attack.
**

EVENTS CENTER:
-The Brain Busters talk. Tully says for a long time, Bobby didn't have a tag team, but he went and got himself the only tag team good enough to have the name Heenan Family wrapped around it. Arn says they've been called overachievers, but all they are is men who believe in a standard and a symbol of excellence (!), and what they are is the foundation of a profound dynasty

Match #5: Akeem w/ Slick vs. Louie Spicolli
Akeem kills him in about 90 seconds with the Splash.
*1/4

It is time for the Brother Love Show. IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOU. He brings out his guests, Randy Savage and Elizabeth. He recaps last week and says he would like to address some of the accusations made by Bad News Brown and says Jack Tunney has been protecting him and maybe there's been kickbacks been given to Tunney. He then asks Elizabeth what favors she's been doing for Tunney, and Savage chokes Love! He grabs the mic and says he's going to do him a favor and allow him to keep existing after saying that, because he's way out of line. He throws him down and says he wants to talk to Bad News Brown. He says he'll give him the title shot he wants so bad, but he should be very very sad about this. He says he insulted Elizabeth, and that is something he can never forget or forgive. OOOOOOH YEAH BAD NEWS FOR BAD NEWS! DIG IT!

Match #6: Rick Rude w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Rico Gomez
Rude is back to only 90 seconds now. :( Rude delivers the goods again, and wins with the Rude Awakening.

This is the final episode that I don't have.

12/10/88 - included footage of Hulk Hogan and Slick on the Brother Love show from SNME:

Jim Duggan pinned Darryl Peterson at 1:53 with the running clothesline

Jake Roberts pinned the Black Knight at 2:37 with the DDT

Bad News Brown pinned Frankie Valdez at 1:58 with the Ghetto Blaster

The Red Rooster (w/ Bobby Heenan) defeated Scott Casey via submission with the Scorpion Death Lock at 2:33

Shawn Michaels & Marty Jannetty fought Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard (w/ Bobby Heenan) to a no contest when all four men began brawling on the floor prior to the match beginning; eventually, both teams battled their way backstage with numerous referees and officials trying to seperate them

Ted Dibiase (w/ Virgil) defeated Lanny Poffo via submission with the Million $ Dream at 1:50

Jacques & Raymond Rougeau (w/ Jimmy Hart) Sam Houston & Stefan Diablo at 3:37 when Raymond pinned Diablo after a double team move off the top

Match #1: Demolition vs. Nick Ferrari/Art Penna

Demolition are not as great as faces. They're still really really fucking good, and this is great, but them and Fuji together was a perfect act. They still get around 3 minutes to beat the fuck out of jobbers, so that's great. They win with the Decapitation.
**

It is time for the Brother Love Show, and he brings out Andre the Giant and Bobby Heenan. They deny Andre being afraid of snakes, and Heenan says the WWF is not a place for animals, let alone serpents, and that snake shouldn't be allowed at ringside or in the ring, and this isn't about whether or not Andre is afraid, it's about Jake needing to control his animal. Andre challenges Jake to fight him like a man without his snake.

Match #2: Hercules vs. Steve Lombardi
This sucked, but was at least only 90 seconds. Herc wins with the Torture Rack.
1/2*

ROYAL RUMBLE: JANUARY 15TH!

Match #3: Mr. Perfect vs. Nito Gomez
Perfect gets only about 90 seconds now, but deliver as best he can. Perfect wins with the Perfect Plex.
*3/4

EVENTS CENTER:
-Outlaw Ron Bass wants to skin Brutus alive
-Rick Rude says he wants the gold now, and he's destined to become a champion in 1989

Match #4: Haku w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Frankie Valdez
Also very short, so wtf. Haku wins with the Superkick in about a minute.
*1/4

EVENTS CENTER:
-The Young Stallions suck dick on live TV
-Dino Bravo says words

Match #5: The Big Bossman w/ Slick vs. Pete Kitchum
This is ALSO only like 90 seconds. WTF. Bossman wins with the Bossman Slam.
*1/2

Bossman handcuffs him to the ropes and beats him up with the nightstick.

Match #6: Ted DiBiase w/ Virgil vs. Lanny Poffo
Also very short. Goddamnit. During this, Vince and Jesse announce a posedown between Warrior and Rick Rude for the Royal Rumble. That sounds pretty terrible. Ted wins with the Million Dollar Dream.
*3/4

Match #7: Greg Valentine/The Honky Tonk Man w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Paul Brown/Rex Farmer

Now, for whatever reason, this gets close to 5 minutes, and it's almost all Honky. Who the fuck laid this episode out? None of this makes any fucking sense. At all. Greg finally gets in at the end, and he beats one of them with the Figure Four. Total disaster.

Hulk Hogan vs. The Big Bossman w/ Slick, Los Angeles (December 17th)
Since it's from one of the Hogan DVDs, the picture is at least nice and clear here, so that's something. This is their best match yet, since Hogan cares here. He handcuffs Slick to the ring cable early on. Bossman has some great selling and bumping before he takes over. Bossman uncuffs Slick and takes over. Hogan makes a comeback, but Bossman cuffs him to the ring cable in the corner! Bossman beats on him, but Hogan breaks free! He Hulks Up now and hits the Big Boot and Legdrop to win.
**3/4

Randy Savage [c] vs. Haku [WWF Championship], Philadelphia (December 17th)

Liz and Heenan are both there. This gets 10 minutes, so it rules. Haku punishes Savage with lots of awesome looking karate, chops, and kicks. Savage sells his ribs really well, and has his usual awesome comebacks. Haku does well feeding Savage on the final comeback, and yeah. Haku misses a Diving Knee Drop off the top, and Randy hits the Flying Elbow for the win.

Match #1: Akeem w/ Slick vs. Juan Valdez

Typical Akeem squash again. He wins with a Big Splash.
*1/4

It is time for the Brother Love Show. He brings on Brother Bobby Heenan and introduces an old friend of his who is making a return, BIG JOHN STUDD! He says he's back, but he doesn't want anything to do with Heenan and refuses to shake his hand. He calls Heenan a weasel and he tries to beg off, and Studd says he will be no part of any family that welcomes Andre the Giant! CONTINUITY!

ROYAL RUMBLE 1989: JANUARY 15TH!

Match #2: The Powers of Pain w/ Mr. Fuji vs. Lanny Poffo/Joe Cruz
This is good, but POP are no Demolition. They win with a sloppy looking Suplex/Flying Clothesline combo.
*1/4

EVENTS CENTER:
-Ted DiBiase says this Royal Rumble must involve the Million Dollar Man and says he can buy wherever he wants in this Rumble, and says he's going to prove that everyone has a price
-Brutus says he will win. Nah.
-Haku says the Royal Rumble belongs to royalty

Match #3: Jim Duggan vs. Tony Suber
Typical Duggan squash. He wins with the clothesline.
*

EVENTS CENTER:
-Andre the Giant says nobody can throw him over the top
-Hulk Hogan says he's going to throw out 29 other dudes, and it doesn't matter what number he gets, and everyone in there is an enemy. He says he's going for Bossman and Akeem, and when he wins, that puts him right back in the #1 Contender spot, and then the Real World Champion will hold the title again, brother. What an asshole.

Match #4: Rick Rude w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Unknown Jobber
Good Rude squash, but again very short. Rude Awakening ends it.
*1/2

Rude makes out with a local post-match.

WWF UPDATE:
-Gene hypes up the Royal Rumble and explains the rules

Match #5: Bad News Brown vs. Bob Emery
BNB hits the Ghetto Blaster in like 20 seconds to win
BEER-BELLIED SHARECROPPERS

Brown keeps stomping on the jobber, and he calls out Randy Savage to fight him right now if he wants to give him some bad news. He says he can talk all he wants when he's not here, but as far as he's concerned, Savage is only champion now because of Elizabeth's favors to Jack Tunney AND RANDY SAVAGE RUNS DOWN TO THE RING AND ATTACKS! YEAH! FUCK YEAH SAVAGE BEATS THE SHIT OUT OF BROWN! They get pulled apart by most of the roster. This feud is great now.

Match #6: Ronnie Garvin vs. Barry Horowitz
HEY RONNIE GARVIN! AWESOME! He beats the fuck out of Horowitz with the HANDS OF STONE~, and Barry does his job really well. Ronnie wins with a Piledriver.
**

THE BUSHWHACKERS ARE COMING. FUCK. EVERYTHING.

Match #7: Outlaw Ron Bass vs. Martin Roy
Another typical Bass squash that he's been doing for 2 years now. He wins with his sort of Pedigree.

Mr. Perfect vs. Koko B. Ware, MSG (December 30th)
Hey, this was fun! The goal is to get Perfect over big, but they get 11 minutes to play around. Good matwork and some great Hennig bumping and stooging before he took over. Usual solid work, and Koko's comeback was thing that was also good. Everything about this was good. Perfect wins with the Perfect Plex. This was borderline, but I'll give it to them,
***

Greg Valentine vs. Ronnie Garvin, MSG (December 30th)

YEAH! HOLY SHIT YEAH! THEY BEAT THE DOG SHIT OUT OF EACH OTHER! They have some really rough and great matwork to begin too, but yeah, this is a huge fucking war. In Garvin, there is finally someone who Valentine can't bully around with strikes, and Valentine is thrown off his game in a big way. AND HIS CHEST IS BLEEDING FROM THE CHOPS! HOOOOOOOOLY SHIT THIS RULES. This is pretty much all punches and chops for 5 minutes of the 17 it goes, but they do it in such a compelling way. Hammer cheats to take over, AND FUCKING KILLS GARVIN WITH A RUNNING FOREARM RIGHT TO THE TEMPLE! GARVIN BLEEDS! WHAT PROMOTION IS THIS?! Valentine goes to the knee for an opening, and Garvin has experience selling a knee after the Figure Four, so that's good too. VALENTINE KICKS GARVIN IN THE HEAD WITH THE SHINGUARD! He keeps on the leg and Garvin's selling is really amazing. He fights back with the hands of stone. He takes off the shinguard and tries to use it in revenge but the ref takes it from him. This allows Valentine to get a schoolboy with the tights to win.
***1/4

Randy Savage [c] w/ Miss Elizabeth vs. Bad News Brown [WWF Championship - Ghetto Fight], MSG (December 30th)

ANOTHER AWESOME FIGHT! We haven't seen violent brawling Savage in a year and a half, and it is AMAZING. Chaotic and out of control, and both men really lay everything in. Savage takes several huge bumps to the floor, and Brown does his awesome series of body blows to Savage. Randy's rib and gut selling is fantastic, as are his hope spots and comebacks. Savage dodges the Ghetto Blaster and BNB rolls out, AND HOLY SHIT WHAT? RANDY SAVAGE DOES A TOPE SUICIDA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah, Randy's comeback is amazing now. He misses the Flying Elbow though. Brown takes too long trying a slam and Randy rolls through with a cradle for the win.

This is the most stacked tag division in WWE history. The old argument was 2000-2001, in which you had three all time great teams and a cast of really good teams around them. But here you have the Hart Foundation, Demolition, the Rougeaus, Rockers, Brain Busters, Bulldogs, etc. You can put together any pairing and it's two of the best teams ever going at it (although the Bulldogs ARE very overrated, they can be taken along for a ride and channeled into a great match as 1988 showed).

Unfortunately, only one team can win, and isn't it fitting that this is the year they do.

In a just world, this is never in doubt. But WWF/E's TV structure can lead to injustice. Lots of times, they don't let the top face work every week. It makes sense. But it robs certain guys. Steve Austin in 1998, John Cena in 2007. You can look at NWA/WCW too. Ric Flair was clearly robbed in 1989 by this same structuring idea. But for once, it didn't happen.

This is sort of an upset, and yet not even a little bit of an upset, as he's clearly the best in the company.

This win breaks the rule that no standing WWF Champion has won WOTY until 1992, which was also an upset win breaking that trend at the time I reviewed 1992. This man is also the first man to win WOTY three times in a row in non-consecutive years.
