PWG Battle of Los Angeles 2012 Night Two September 2nd, 2012 Reseda, CA Match #1: Sami Callihan vs. TJ Perkins [Quarterfinals] This is sort of a dream match for me. And probably me alone. The only match that could be more of a dream match solely for me would be like, Cape Fear/Kikuchi vs. AMW/James Gibson. And god damnit, fuck me for even thinking of how amazing that'd be. Anyways! Steen is on commentary again, and him going from hating Sami on his PWG debut to now sort of taking him under his wing has been AMAZING and inspires amazing WCW ideas. Sami pulls a Steen and tries to kiss TJ to freak him out, and Steen pops huge and yells to thumb his butthole now. Great speed/technician vs. striker story. There's a great little thing where TJ's only chance is moving around a lot, but by moving around a lot, he also leaves himself open to Sami's big shots. BOTH MEN DO AMAZING TOPE SUICIDAS! NO WONDER I LOVE BOTH GUYS! It's a Sami slugfest under 15 minutes. Not a ton of depth, but tons of cool shit. Stretch Muffler ends it. *** Match #2: Eddie Edwards vs. Adam Cole [Quarterfinals] Holy shit, this...this was good too. Eddie Edwards has become a good wrestler. I have no choice but to arrive at that conclusion. Not great or anything and he has clear weaknesses and I'm sure that being around dudes like Davey and the Young Bucks would bring back his bad qualities, but he's been great in PWG recently. Here he pulls off a great shtick performance early on, some good selling of the hand after transition spot, and lots of fire on his comeback. Cole is good too, and they deserve credit for actually getting the Joe/Ki cutoff of a Tope Suicida with an Enzuiguri spot right. Lots of guys fuck the timing up on that big time. STEEN AND EXCALIBUR TALK ABOUT THE REXPLEX! OMG. Cole has a sweet Basement Knee, the best I've seen since Jimmy Rave. They do a little too much at the end, but it ends before it gets too ridiculous. Cole wins with a Northern Superkick and a Straightjacket German. *** Match #3: Michael Elgin vs. Brian Cage [Quarterfinals] This was like 10 minutes of an amazing power vs. power match in a match that needlessly went 20 minutes. Like, seriously cool stuff with them trying to show each other up. Then they started doing stuff just to do stuff and it lost me. Steen comes down after a ref bump and hits Cage in revenge with the Deep Sea Diverticulitis. Instead of that being the end like it would be in a great match (Steen/Ricochet for example), they go on for a few more minutes before Elgin wins with the Spiral Bomb. I blame Cage for this, because Elgin's been great against other good wrestlers lately. **1/2 Cage then calls out Steen, and they have a brawl, but The Young Bucks come out to attack Steen. It's a three on one, AND RICK KNOX COMES OUT TO SAVE?! He tries to get them to leave after Steen rolls out, AND CAGE ATTACKS FROM BEHIND! EL GENERICO ALSO HATES THE BUCKS, AND HE SAVES RICK KNOX, MUCH LIKE RICK KNOX ONCE SAVED HIM FROM THE MEN OF LOW MORAL FIBER! Rick Knox gets on the mic and says this is gone on way too long and challenges them to a six man and says they'll find another partner. Steen gets on the apron and Knox says to unite for one more night to help destroy the Young Bucks. Steen gets into the ring and Generico is not happy. AND STEEN GIVES GENERICO THE FINGER AND WALKS OUT. ![]() Match #4: Roderick Strong vs. Ricochet [Quarterfinals] Unfortunately, ROH Roderick Strong showed up here. Which meant this was good, but the body lacked that special something. Strong seemed fine keeping it in neutral all match and grounding Ricochet. It was a good idea in theory, but Steen did it in a way that kept the fans into it through the force of Ricochet's amazing bumping, where as Strong just kept him down on the mat and it kind of killed the crowd. Finishing run was too short, and Ricochet wins with the SSP. **3/4 Match #5: Davey Richards/Kyle O'Reilly/Joey Ryan vs. Willie Mack/Drake Younger/B-Boy The typical losers multi-man match. Davey and Kyle both have old Joey Ryan gear on, and it is amazing. This is what a lot of PWG shows after 2009 have lacked and it's a mostly comedy match in between a lot of super serious finisher heavy matches. Kyle is terrible at this kind of shtick stuff though and looks like a kid playing dress up. Usually he looks like a wrestler wrestling, even if he's not a good wrestler. Davey is awesome at it, and probably better at pure shtick than actual serious stuff, and it makes me miss 2007-8 Davey who was all about the the entertainment in the NRC days. Willie beats Joey. **3/4 Match #6: Sami Callihan vs. Adam Cole [Semi-Finals] This was great, to the surprise of nobody ever. Sami's buzzsaw stylings are now in perfect contrast to Cole being a chickenshit. They waste no time and do 10 minutes of cool spots and painful strikes. Sami is the king. Cole's been impressive and all, but Sami's the MVP of this tournament, so Cole winning kind of sucked. Finish didn't really work either. He repeatedly targets the knee, but not in a way where it's an issue at all. He then puts on the Figure Four, and Sami taps. *** Match #7: Ricochet vs. Michael Elgin [Semi-Finals] Sort of an awesome story here, as Elgin is selling exhaustion since he's not exactly an endurance guy, so Ricochet tries to tire him out and runs actual circles around him. He eventually is caught and Ricochet has his customary insane bumps. Crazy crazy spots in the finishing run and a totally fucking insane Ricochet dive over the post. Ricochet has Elgin worn out, but can't do anything that will actually pin him, so it's a matter of time until he is caught, and Elgin wins with the Spiral Bomb. Elgin also seems to hurt his knee in this match, going into the Finals against a guy with a Figure Four in his arsenal. *** Match #8: El Generico/Rick Knox vs. The Young Bucks/Brian Cage This is a ton of fun. It's mostly due to the insane crowd and some of the best PWG booking ever, but fuck it, it was a blast to watch. Rick Knox wrestles exactly how a guy who's trained but doesn't wrestle and hasn't been in training for at least 10 years should wrestle. Kind of awkward, but he has the basic stuff down. Generico is Generico, he's the best. He's a great FIP and his hope spots are fantastic. He almost has the tag, but Matt Jackson pulls Knox off and throws him into the post and then the chairs at ringside. GENERICO HITS CAGE WITH THE BRAINBUSTER AND CRAWLS, BUT KNOX IS DOWN! ![]() HOLY SHIT, KEVIN STEEN GETS ON THE APRON?! AND GENERICO MAKES THE FUCKING TAG! I DON'T EVEN REMEMBER READING THIS! HOOOOOOOOOOOOLY SHIT FUCK YES! STEEN HOT TAG, AND STEEN, GENERICO, AND KNOX HIT A TRIPLE FLIP DIVE! ALL CAPS BECAUSE I AM MARKING OUT *SO* HARD! RICK KNOX HAS TO FINALLY GET IN WHEN STEEN AND GENERICO GET TAKEN OUT, BUT HE BLOCKS MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK WITH A LOW BLOW AND LOWBRIDGES CAGE OUT! RICK KNOX USES THE FUCKING VIOLENCE PARTY ON ONE OF THE BUCKS! STEEN AND GENERICO GET BACK IN AND THEY DO THE PACKAGE PILEDRIVER FOLLOWED BY THE BRAINBUSTER! FUUUUUUUUUUCK. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEES. KNOX COVERS FOR THE WIN! IDK PROBABLY ONLY LIKE ***1/2, BUT FUCK IT. TWENTY MILLION STARS WATCH IMMEDIATELY. Steen and Generico stare each other down post-match. Steen offers a handshake and now Generico goes to shake, but Steen gives him the finger again. He goes to leave, but Generico grabs his arm to stop him, AND GENERICO GIVES STEEN THE FINGER NOW! Steen laughs, and that was perfect. Match #9: Michael Elgin vs. Adam Cole [2012 BATTLE OF LOS ANGELES FINALS] I honestly feel bad for these two, because nothing's topping that. Good story with the knee injury and him being somewhat winded, but it took them 10 minutes to get there. This was really disappointingly laid out and weird. They do a bunch of big stuff in the first 10 minutes, but then Cole goes after the leg and they tease the exhaustion. Also, Cole's been booked all weekend as this smart chickenshit heel, but he gets to be the first guy in PWG and the tournament to kick out of the Spiral Bomb? Shit's fucked up. They then forget about the knee and just do more spots. Cole gets a Superkick to the knee, a Canadian Destroyer, another Superkick, and the Straightjacket German to win. This reminded me a lot of Strong/Omega in 2009, in that they're capable of having a great BOLA final, but they just seemed fine doing random spots and occasionally remembering to do the story they've built up. **3/4 RANKING THE BOLAS: 1. 2008 (Hero/Ki, Hero/Danielson, Hero/Necro, Hero/Lost, Danielson/Perkins, Ki/Yoshino, Omega/Bonham) 2. 2011 (Steen/Generico, Steen/Finlay, Hero/Mack, Generico/Claudio) 3. 2006 (Generico/CIMA, Super Dragon/Necro, Steen/Sydal, Claudio/Evans, Generico/Sabin, Three Way Tag, Strong/Romero) 4. 2005 (AJ/Evans, AJ/Danielson, Quicksilver/Bosh, Generico/Bosh, Steen/SD, amazing eight man) 5. 2007 (Generico/CIMA/Strong, Shelley/Sydal, Shelley/Strong, Claudio/PAC, Nigel/Generico, Nigel/Necro, Hero/Tornado begins, Hero/Joey, Strong/Romero) 6. 2012 7. 2010 (Hero/Tozawa, Claudio/Ricochet, Hero/Gatson, Hero/Daniels) 8. 2009 (Generico/Shelley, Strong/Gatson, Shelley/Gatson, Lost/Omega) |
