My top 5 all already got chosen (Joe/Punk I, ROH/CZW six man, Joe/Punk II, Aries/Joe) or isn't on the list (Joe/Liger vs. Ki/Danielson).

![]() #5 Samoa Joe [c] vs. CM Punk [ROH World Championship] ROH Joe vs. Punk II - 10/16/2004 Chicago Ridge, IL The psychology in the majority of this is amazing. They do some good opening matwork, but once Punk an get an opening, he starts going back to the side headlock strategy used on 6/12. The difference here is that he doesn't play rope-a-dope and try to get Joe to strike himself tired, but always goes back to the headlock. Joe tries to throw him off with cheap shots in the corner and strikes, but Punk refuses. Punk almost gets a flash pin a few times, in a callback to Joe/Cabana at Survival of the Fittest, causing Joe to bail out to the floor to stop the momentum for the first time ever in his title run. Joe also jaws with some of the fans, getting pissed. After the success, Punk gets a little cocky, allowing Joe to start with the big strikes an a Roundhouse to the head that makes Punk bail. Punk starts working the arm now a bit, but Joe fights it off with forearms and slaps, and in a panic to avoid a big blow, he starts grabbing headlocks. Joe rolls out and Punk holds onto it and Joe hits a Back Suplex on the floor! It begins to get a lot more intense in the ring, with Joe being pissed that it took almost 30 minutes to get on offense, and selling the arm really well, and wincing as he claps his hands. Punk works on the head and neck, and Joe basically stretches and beats the shit out of Punk. Punk starts taking big risks to try and turn it around, which backfires when Joe just walks away, all badassly. Joe starts working the back from the drop on the floor and the stretches, and unlike 6/12, Joe controls for a long enough period to do big damage. Punk's gradual selling of going from totally confident to barely hanging on is incredible, and there's an AMAZING moment where Joe Kawada Kicks the fuck out of Punk, but Punk stands up and slaps Joe and everyone loses their shit! They have a strike battle, but Joe cuts him off with a European Uppercut. In a cool subtle thing that I noticed for the first time, Joe gets increasingly violent with his strikes every time he cuts off a Punk comeback, going from forearms to European Uppercuts to kicks to headbutts, doing a great job of showing Joe's mounting frustration and Punk's FIGHTING SPIRIT~. Punk hits a sloppy Huracanrana off the ropes to take Joe to the floor, and I could buy that as him being worn out, and Punk hits his amazing TOPE SUICIDAAAAAAA. Punk is ballsy enough to hit Joe with two OLE OLE Kicks, but Joe catches the Rana off the apron and swings Punk into the steel guardrail. There's a super passionate strike battle before Joe hits the OLE OLE Kick, reclaiming his move. Joe soon hits his own epic dive with the Elbow Suicida. Gabe and Nutly leave the booth to let the math stand on the crowd reaction in a smart move, since they're INSANE from here. There's this cool thing where they'll be super worn down but have rushes o adrenaline. A bunch of great great builds to moves, and playing on shit like the Sleeper from last time, and Punk realizing that the Pepsi Plunge is his only hope. Watching all the way through Joe's reign and seeing him beat guys with armbars, a Lariat, Brainbusters, etc. makes those into much more legit nearfalls too. They battle on the top with Joe desperately avoiding the Plunge, and he hits a Super Muscle Buster as the time expires. So, the analysis. There are some flaws in this. I noticed this time that there's a good amount of blatant spot calling caught on here. Some sloppiness, and the total lack of time cues that would have really helped. Otherwise, this is perfect. A textbook example of how a slow and logical build can lead into an amazing finishing run. They did more than 6/12, but also didn't blow their load on a bunch of shit. All the good stuff here, it's also an incredibly important match in this decade of pro wrestling. Amazing match, but in retrospect, it is not perfect. It has flaws. Minor flaw, but flaws. I cannot go the full five stars, but everyone should see this and the first and third matches in the series. ****3/4 ![]() #4 KENTA [c] vs. Low Ki [GHC Junior Heavyweight Championship] ROH Final Battle 2005 - 12/17/2005 Edison, NJ This is kind of a perfect Japanese junior style kickfest. Neither's great at selling or known for long storytelling (although they CAN), so they just beat the SHIT out of each other. There's a subtle tone of Ki being all like "yo fuck you, this is my house" and KENTA being like "nah bro" so they beat the holy shit out of each other. It drags a bit in the middle after a crazy hot start as these matches often do, but picks up big time by the end. KENTA wins with the Go 2 Sleep. This isn't the all time classic it was praised as at the time and absolutely should not be #4 (but I gave my theory on that with Strong/Danielson), but it is fucking great and should be in the top 100. **** ![]() #3 Bryan Danielson [c] vs. Nigel McGuinness [c] [ROH World Championship vs. ROH Pure Championship - Unification Match] ROH Unified - 8/12/2006 Liverpool, England This is also overrated due to the legend of the thing and an INSANE final five or so minutes. Constant back and forth, which I can buy since they are essentially equals, but the lack of anything regarding storytelling, etc. holds it back from becoming an all-time classic. Although it's in that pantheon of essential ROH matches. Since Nigel's the face in England, there wasn't a ton of Pure rules shenanigans, but more just straight up awesome wrestling. Great back and forth and what not. The near-countouts almost beating Nigel for once was cool. It changes huuuuuuge when Danielson keeps pulling Nigel head-first into the post. He takes it straight on the forehead and shit and bleeds hardway and begins his tradition of reckless brain damage that makes him both a cautionary tale as it goes on to end his career before he can make it big and an underground legend for the punishment. Crowd gets SUUUUUUUUUUUPER fucking hot for this now, and they have an amazing final few moments of counters and big finisher kickouts. Danielson's crucifix elbows end it, and he unifies the belts. ****1/4 ![]() #2 Bryan Danielson [c] vs. KENTA [ROH World Championship] ROH Glory By Honor V Night Two - 9/16/2006 Manhattan, NY Danielson's title reign continues to be overrated to the point of legend on this list compared to the superior Joe reign, but this is one of the most hyped ROH matches ever, and one of a rare few that have the Gabe stamp of SUPER HYPE to the point of calling it his favorite ROH match ever (along with Joe/Kobashi and the DG six man, which...ugh). It's really really good, deserving of this list, but NOT #2. For me, it's lacking that certain emotion or sense of high drama or unbelievable hate to put it on that level. But there's not a lot of matches in ROH history that are better than this. KENTA targets the bad shoulder with his kicks. Danielson trying to use his left arm for everything is great. Danielson then works the knees, and pulls on the ropes and shit. This is after the first half paints him as a guy trying to gut it out and keep the title against an invader who's destroying his arm. But then the knee work is forgotten, so it was just a waste of a few minutes. They went back to the arm, and shit was good. Really great finishing run. The GTS happening so close to the ropes really killed the drama of if it would beat Danielson a 3rd time. Danielson wins with the Cattle Mutilation. Apart from the weird section of knee work with Danielson working heel which was a total opposite of the match they were working before and after, this was really fucking great. **** ![]() #1 CIMA/Naruki Doi/Masato Yoshino vs. Ryo Saito/Genki Horiguchi/Dragon Kid ROH Supercard of Honor - 3/31/2006 Chicago Ridge, IL This is great, and again, totally should be on here. It's a landmark deal that they pulled off, it got ***** because Dave freaks out when something brand new to him shows up, etc. Still, this is a great spotfest. Everyone is really on their game, and there's a ton of amazing stuff. Yoshino is so fast that it genuinely looks like he's working in fast forward at times. Lots of really fast and crisp spots. And yet, they had a basic structure and story of Blood Gen isolating Genki and bullying Dragon Kid. Then they got into an amazing finishing run. Super fast and crisp, and DK pins Doi with the Dragon Rana. Great spotfest, but once you watch DG more, it becomes clear that this isn't special outside of being a crisper and longer version of their usual big match, but with a really really hot crowd. AMAZING live match, but this style isn't something that usually holds up as classic. ***3/4 This was a ton of fun to watch all this classic shit again, but the ranking was incredibly incredibly frustrating. |
