ECW World Heavyweight Champion: Shane Douglas, Since 11/30/1997 - LONGEST REIGNING CURRENT CHAMPION FTW World Heavyweight Champion: Taz, Since 5/14/1998 ECW Television Champion: Rob Van Dam, Since 4/4/1998 ECW World Tag Team Champions: Rob Van Dam/Sabu, Since 12/13/1998 ECW Hardcore TV December 23rd, 1998 Philadelphia, PA LAST SHOW OF THE YEAR. I WIN. In the ring, Joey Styles introduces the show. Taz comes out and says this is the FTW belt, and receipt #3 is gonna happen to Sabu right here in South Philadelphia! He says he'll do the heist, and Douglas WILL pay the price! Before the match, Justin Credible and Jason throw Chastity out for looking "hot". Joey announces Dreamer/Credible for Guilty as Charged in a Stairway to Hell Match. A black fan fights Chastity and beats her down. Oh hey, it's Jazz. Great. Credible canes Chastity, so she's gone to go be Raven's sister. Bob Artese tries to protect her from more caning and gets beat on before Tommy Dreamer runs out to save. Terry Funk comes out and calls him Tommy Loser, and says he loves Tommy and he'd love to kick him right in the balls, because he's yellow. He's a yellow chicken fucker. Funk and Credible get in the ring and Funk says he has a hand behind his back. He says Tommy used him and dares him to hit the one armed man, and tries to start a "CHICKEN DICK" chant and fails. They both beat on Tommy and Terry Funk says to meet his new protege, Justin Credible. PLEASE. REACT TO JUSTIN CREDIBLE. HE BEAT UP SASUKE AND MIKEY AND PUT THE SANDMAN OUT AND NOW TERRY FUNK TURNED HEEL TO BE WITH HIM. JUST CARE ABOUT HIM PLEASE. Credible then destroys Tommy's leg with a ladder and chair. They do more stuff, including Credible fucking up a Spinning Toe Hold, and it goes on and on and on and on. Match #1: Yoshihiro Tajiri vs. Antifaz Del Norte They got 6 minutes and totally killed it, although it was mostly Tajiri killing it. Clean shaven Tajiri in short trunks is so strange. But yeah, this is Tajiri's debut and he rules it. Joey tries to sell this as two stars being born, but it's immediately obvious that Tajiri is the fucking man and Norte is just a dude. He has some cool offense, but Tajiri just has "it". I hate that term because a lot of times it's not true and another way to hype up some dude, but Tajiri undisputedly has that certain intangible. Tons of brutal kicks all match, and Tajiri wins with a Bridging Dragon Suplex. *** In the back, Stevie Prazak interviews Robert Gibson who is watching the show. Danny Doring and Roadkill come over and Doring says Robert Gibson is his dad after they double teamed his mom in the bathroom of a Hardee's. He thought it was Ricky at first, but he has blond hair so it can't be him, and then does a lot of insane dancing and struts away. He asks Roadkill if he knows his mom too, AND ROADKILL RESPECTFULLY TAKES HIS HAT OFF, SHAKES ROBERT'S HAND AND SAYS "CHICKENS." Match #2: Rob Van Dam [c] w/ Bill Alfonso vs. Balls Mahoney [ECW Television Championship] Poor RVD, holding the only title without World status now. This was actually great, I was pleasantly surprised. RVD is still good with someone that provides a styles clash, but it's just against other guys similar to him where he seems to get too caught up in what constitutes an "RVD match". Balls goes nuts with power stuff, so RVD has to use crazy stuff to stay alive, like a lesser version of RVD/Bam Bam, right down to the insane RVD bumping and cool new offense. RVD finally hits the Van Daminator and IMMEDIATELY hits a Five Star Frog Splash to a chair on Balls' chest to win. *** Match #3: Taz [c] vs. Sabu w/ Bill Alfonso [FTW World Heavyweight Championship] This got 7 minutes, but was again really fucking great. Sabu immediately went after Taz and wanted revenge for his neck. Really great table and chair spots from Sabu, and then to put over the fight Sabu is putting up, Taz has to use a weapon for once to take control. He then bloodies up Sabu and destroys him in wonderful fashion. Sabu fights back, BUT TAZ HITS A DRAGON SUPLEX THROUGH A TABLE IN THE CORNER! Shane Douglas comes out and holds up three fingers. He says to cover him, and Fonzie tries to throw in the towel, BUT TAZ CATCHES IT AND THROWS IT OUT! TAZ GIVES SHANE AND FONZIE THE FINGER AND LIES DOWN! HE PUTS SABU ON TOP AND SABU WINS THE FTW TITLE. ***1/4 Taz puts the belt on his knocked out body and applauds, but leaves through the crowd. Shane is confused and Fonzie waves EMTs out. In the parking lot, Prazak interviews Taz. He says he always picks his spot, and it's just like Shane said. He did the heist, and now Shane pays the price. |

TAG TEAM OF THE YEAR: 1995: The Pitbulls 1996: The Eliminators 1997: The Dudley Boyz No tag team really lit the world on fire in ECW in 1998. the FBI were clearly on fire in the first half of the year, but ECW completely took them off TV, and turned it into a race between two teams. One of them won, whatever. ![]() 1. ROB VAN DAM & SABU - 38 POINTS 2. The Dudley Boyz 37 3. Chris Candido & Lance Storm 19 4. Little Guido & Tracy Smothers 18 5. Tommy Dreamer & The Sandman 15 6. WRESTLER OF THE YEAR: 1995: The Sandman 1996: Sabu 1997: Sabu This makes a lot of sense, as awful as he became in the mid 2000s, since he got the most TV time in 1998 and produced a high quality of matches relatively consistently. And for the first time, Biggie and I get the actual same WOTY. ![]() 1. ROB VAN DAM - 75 POINTS 2. Sabu 58 3. Chris Candido 51 4. Lance Storm 49 5. Bubba Ray Dudley 44 6. D-Von Dudley 41 7.
