ROH World Champion: Adam Cole, Since 9/20/2013 ROH World Tag Team Champions: reDRagon, Since 8/17/2013 ROH World Television Champion: Matt Taven, Since 3/2/2013 ![]() ROH Charm City Challenge October 5th, 2013 Bodymore, MD Match #1: Eddie Edwards vs. Adam Page This is more the proper use of Eddie, as he gets 10 minutes against a talented young guy and makes him look stronger in defeat. It's not great or anything, but it's very good and competently done. Lesser dudes would have tried to force Page into an epic, but he's not there yet, so Eddie works a kind of young lion trial series type deal. Page looks really good for avoiding a lot of stuff, but still goes down after the Die Hard. **3/4 Match #2: Roderick Strong vs. Tadarius Thomas vs. Caprice Coleman vs. Antonio Thomas This kind of sucked. Roddy is in b-show mode here, and TD and Caprice are kind of sloppy and all over the place, showing why they're the lesser halves of their respective teams. And what the fuck? Why is Antonio Thomas back? They do things, and it drags a lot and Roddy finally beats Antonio with the Stronghold. *3/4 Veda Scott comes out and says ROH has committed another injustice, and demands that Steve Corino is reinstated, but Outlaw Inc. comes out instead. I guess because Homicide's trigger is the name "Steve Corino". Since they murdered RD Evans, Veda bails. Match #3: Outlaw Inc. vs. Ruckus/BLK-Jeez Kingston faces his former BLK-OUT stablemates. There's also sort of an issue here as at the time, there was a large debate between ROH and CZW fans on if BLK-OUT or The Rottweilers were more badass. That seems weird in retrospect when one stable has Homicide, Low Ki, AND J-Train, but peak BLK-OUT was super fucking cool. Anyways, none of this is mentioned at all because Kelly is a goon who knows nothing. Also, Homicide and Kingston continuing to wrestle in shirts and ties and normal pants is really shitty and lame. They're both past their prime, but there's no reason a team of two thuggish violent bullies couldn't work instead of this. Outlaw Inc. isn't one of the top 10 worst ROH things, but it's probably on the list of a top 25. Anyways, the match is still decent enough, but O.Inc. are dead in the water. They randomly now use a Doomsday Device for the win. Why? ** Adam Cole comes out and gets on the mic. He says he's number one now, and says he easily beat Mark Briscoe last week, and after Jay Briscoe embarrassed himself last week, he's been banned from ROH events until he is cleared to come back from injury. Roderick Strong comes out and he says he's got unfinished business with him and says he's a little chickenshit and he's never really beaten him the right way and he wants a shot tonight. Nigel comes out to make it official, and they fight. Security breaks it up, but Cole hits him with the belt and leaves. Match #4: Matt Taven [c] w/ The House of Truth vs. Cedric Alexander [ROH World Television Championship] This is a fun one for under ten minutes. They do solid opening stuff, and Cedric dominates until the girls interfere. Taven controls for like a minute before they go back into just doing stuff. Cedric has a lot of cool things, and then there's a lot of interference. Taven wins with the Climax. If they had time for this to actually breath and develop for more than eight or nine minutes (or if they used the opening minutes more efficiently), this could have been great. **1/4 At commentary, Kelly announces that Cole/Strong is now No DQ. Match #5: Kevin Steen vs. ACH This rules. Steen is annoyed by ACH's pluckiness and confidence, so he starts abusing him. They do the exact kind of flips vs. power match you would expect, and it's a lot of fun. ACH takes a lot of really nasty stuff and bumps harder for Steen than anyone besides like Generico or Jacobs in recent memory in ROH. ACH has some awesome counters to usual Steen spots, the best of which was blocking the Hanging DDT and hitting a Swinging Flatliner off the middle instead. Some great offense from ACH too down the finishing run as Steen isn't Elgin or Lethal and is actually great enough to let ACH shien on offense instead of just surviving a lot. ACH keeps countering the Package Piledriver, and Steen has to kill him with a Lariat before he hits it to win. If this took place in a real arena and not a vacuum like Baltimore's become in 2013, it might be even better. *** Match #6: Jimmy Jacobs vs. Michael Bennett w/ Maria [Trial Match Series - Match #3] Jacobs is 1-1 so far. Jimmy puts out his finest carryjob perhaps ever, and he gets an actual great match out of Bennett. Admittedly it's a low level kind of sliding scale one, but still, I've had that kind of philosophy with ROH matches since mid-2010, and Bennett hasn't cracked three before. Jimmy's been great since like 2004, but in 2013, he's seemingly mastered finishing runs too. He was more based around really well done basics and brawling before, but since the dawn of the year, he's been mostly having great normal ROH style workrate matches too. Bennett works on the neck after Jimmy's initial awesome offensive like against Steen. Jimmy sells well, and then guides Bennett through a finishing run. Jimmy again does a Tope Suicida into nothing but a chair and the railing, and manages to channel the decent finishing arsenal of Bennet properly. Nobody buys a lot of these moves like the TKO and Box Office Smash as actual finishing moves, but they work pretty well as nearfalls due to beating a lot of lower level guys. Maria causes distractions, and Bennett eventually hits the Piledriver to win. *** Caprice Coleman joins commentary for the next match, and asks why Elgin and Lethal get a title shot before he and Cedric. Outlaw Inc. are also in the crowd watching. Match #7: reDRagon [c] vs. Michael Elgin/Jay Lethal [ROH World Tag Team Championship] I really like Elgin and I kind of like Jay Lethal, but they are absolutely guys who will play to their opponents' worst tendencies. Just look at their matches against Davey Richards for example. So yeah, this is not great. Some of the opening matwork is good, because Lethal and Kyle are both decent at that. The first half of this is basically all filler. They isolate Lethal and it is the usual boring ass RD control segment. Elgin does stuff at the end, but it's more him trading highspots and less him playing his role as a powerhouse, so that kind of sucks too. Lots of stuff happens, and Lethal is beaten with Chasing the Dragon. ** Match #8: Adam Cole [c] vs. Roderick Strong [ROH World Championship - No Disqualification Match] For reasons I don't quite get, they basically don't need this stipulation AT ALL besides one spot at the end that ends up not meaning anything overall. Cole again works the shortcut taking heel thing, but Roddy basically forces him into the highspot laden match these two can do really well. It's still not great because this is their fifth match in a span of 4-5 months and they've just run out of cool stuff to do after the peak that was the Ringmaster's Challenge. Cole hits roddy with the belt at the end, but he kicks out and then they do a final run of stuff. Cole jumps off the top and into the Panama Sunrise, his Canadian Destroyer, for the win. **3/4 |

ROH World Champion: Adam Cole, Since 9/20/2013 ROH World Tag Team Champions: reDRagon, Since 8/17/2013 ROH World Television Champion: Matt Taven, Since 3/2/2013 ROH Wrestling October 12th, 2013 Philadelphia, PA TONIGHT: TAVEN/LETHAL FOR THE TV TITLE! Match #1: ACH vs. Adam Page This is only like 3 minutes. I like what they did here, but it was kind of a bad idea. They did a huge sprint for the time given and right after ACH hits his dive, he tries a Crossbody but Page rolls through to win. This is great because the idea that the match could end at any nearfall or whatever is a great one. However, people are fucking DYING to have ACH as more than just a midcard job guy, so this also doesn't work because what the fuck? This is the thing you use TD Thomas for. ** In the ring, Nigel McGuinness announces the main event of Glory By Honor XI on 10/26 in Chicago as a two hour time limit eight man CHAMPIONS VS. ALL STARS thing. He announces the all star team as Michael Elgin but then Jay Briscoe comes out before Nigel can finish. He says his only question is how he's gonna have that match when the real champ ain't even in the match. Nigel says he's injured and he can't book him if he can't wrestle. Jay says he's gonna be cleared real soon and says he knows why Adam kicked him in the head, and it's because he's nothing but a little bitch. He said he'd hand the belt over like a man and as soon as he turned his head, he Superkicked him from behind like a pussy, and that's some bullshit. He says five days before Chicago, he's gonna be cleared. Nigel says he's already booked the match and Jay says he's done what Elgin hasn't, and he's beaten Adam Cole's ass with the title on the line. Michael Elgin comes out and says the ref couldn't count three, but the fans counted three after he hit the Elgin Bomb. He says what Jay didn't do is defend the title against him when he was #1 Contender. Jay goes to interrupt and Elgin says he's talking now. He says he's looking to the future at the end of the month and he doesn't care who his partners are, because he fights for himself without his brother watching his back, and he'll beat every champion ROH has to get his hands on Adam Cole. He says Jay may be the REAL World Champion, but if Adam Cole can tell himself that his belt means he's World Champion, then he's the uncrowned World Champion. Elgin says to beat him before he calls himself anything, but referees come out to settle it down. NEXT WEEK: BENNETT/MARIA VS. BOB EVANS/CHEESEBURGER Match #2: Roderick Strong vs. Mike Mondo I believe this is Mondo's final ROH match, so that's another victory. Roddy basically just runs through stuff against Mondo's boring ass and wins with the Gibson Driver. *1/2 Post-match, Roddy gets on the mic and dubs himself Mr. ROH. NEXT WEEK: REDDRAGON VS. FOREVER HOOLIGANS VS. C&C FOR THE TAG TITLES! Match #3: Outlaw Inc. vs. Marshall Law w/ Veda Scott This is much more like it, as Homicide and Eddie run through them in a minute and win with a Doomsday Bulldog. * Post-match, Homicide snaps a different finger of RD Evans. Kingston gets on the mic and says they're happy to help Nigel clean up ROH, but they've got business with the reDRagon first, and calls them to get their snowflake asses out and do it prison style. Eddie brings a chair in and says they can wait. Coming back, they're gone and Nigel says it took security. Okay then. Match #4: Matt Taven [c] w/ The House of Truth vs. Jay Lethal [ROH World Television Championship] This is a match that absolutely happens. They again don't time out all the House of Truth stuff well, as they have like 12 minutes and the stalling and nonsense at the start takes up too much time that they could use for the control segment to make Taven look like an actual threat, since we've swung back from the summer and Taven is now treated as an afterthought again. Finishing run really wasn't anything special either. Taven wins with the Climax. ** |

ROH World Champion: Adam Cole, Since 9/20/2013 ROH World Tag Team Champions: reDRagon, Since 8/17/2013 ROH World Television Champion: Matt Taven, Since 3/2/2013 ROH Wrestling October 19th, 2013 Philadelphia, PA Match #1: Mark Briscoe vs. Tadarius Thomas During this, Kelly and Nigel say the 8 man at Glory by Honor will now be an elimination match too. FUCK. This isn't much more than a 5 minute Mark showcase. Delirious is just as bad as Cornette, but in a different way. Everything makes sense and there's not too many horrible guys left, but everything is just so god damned predictable and boring. Mark gets the best of everything and then wins with the Froggy Bow. *3/4 In the back, C&C says they finally get their shot. They say they humble the Hooligans and humble the Dragon. reDRagon comes on and says this is getting out of control and says this isn't their first shot and they've never been able to beat them. That's not their fault, because nobody can beat them, and they're another victory in the epic tale of reDRagon. They say not to chase the dragon, and Kyle says they have to go do squat thrusts. Adam Cole comes out next and gets on the mic. He says he became a real man, and a real man does and says what he wants in order to get what he wants, and he has what he wanted. He's achieved his golden dream, and it's around his waist right now. People told him that he has to smile and shake hands and he has to make sure that he's happy to be there, but then he realized that those people were trying to keep him down from becoming the best damn pro wrestler on the planet. No more shaking hands and no more fake smiles, and if he was just happy to be here, he wouldn't be World Champion. He says there are no other "real" World Champions, only him. Jay Briscoe tried to ruin his moment and he should feel lucky all he got was a kick to the head. As for Michael Elgin, they were labeled the future, but the truth is that ROH wanted Michael Elgin to be their posterboy. He's on the front of everything, but Cole is cut off as Michael Elgin comes out. Cole leaves, BUT JAY BRISCOE COMES OUT BEHIND HIM! Cole runs around and slides in and out, but Elgin grabs the belt from him. He holds it up, but Jay Briscoe then comes in. They argue over it and people break it up. NEXT WEEK: JACOBS VS. SILAS Match #2: Michael Bennett/Maria vs. Bob Evans/Cheeseburger This is whatever. A squash for Bennett and Maria. Bennett beats Cheeseburger with the TKO. 1/2* Post-match, PORDIGY brags about ending BJ Whitmer's career. He says he has the best Piledriver in pro wrestling and he's gonna show it. He goes to hit it on Cheeseburger, BUT KEVIN STEEN RUNS OUT TO SAVE! He takes offense to that and gets the mic. He says he doesn't have a problem with him ending BJ's career because BJ is a big boy and had a good career, but trying to end a kid's career before it starts...actually, he doesn't have a problem with that either. He has a problem with him lying about his Piledriver and challenges him to let him use his on him and he'll ask him again. People come down to separate them, NEXT WEEK: DAVEY RICHARDS VS. RICKY MARVIN! STEEN VS. EDWARDS! In the back, the American Wolves cut a promo. Davey says this is the wrestling other companies try to emulate but don't quite get. God damnit, Davey. They say they'll win or something, I don't know. Steve Corino comes out to try and do commentary, but they make him leave. But Corino slides in the ring and says for three months, ROH has kept him out. He signed a contract at Border Wars that makes him the PERMANENT color commentator, and Nigel comes out. Corino shows him the contract and says to do the right thing. Kevin Kelly pretends SCUM means that Corino's contract is no longer valid, and Nigel looks at it as he goes to the back. Match #3: reDRagon [c] vs. Forever Hooligans vs. Caprice Coleman/Cedric Alexander [ROH World Tag Team Championship] This happens, generally. Lots of routine time killing and it being in front of a totally dead crowd really really hurts. They beat Kozlov with Chasing the Dragon and the crowd continues to make no noise. At a certain point, you gotta stop blaming the crowd though, because Mark/TD had a really good crowd. *3/4 |

ROH World Champion: Adam Cole, Since 9/20/2013 ROH World Tag Team Champions: reDRagon, Since 8/17/2013 ROH World Television Champion: Matt Taven, Since 3/2/2013 ROH Wrestling October 26th, 2013 Philadelphia, PA Match #1: Jimmy Jacobs vs. Silas Young [Trial Series - Match #1] Kelly explains the rules of the series on commentary before the match, AND JACOBS IMMEDIATELY HITS A SPEAR TO WIN! That explains the Steen match a lot better. 45/Poop A recap airs of the Cole/Elgin/Jay angle. Match #2: Davey Richards vs. Ricky Marvin This one is also lacking, but more because Davey sucks. A lot of clunky and awkward strikes again, a la 2010 to mid 2012 Davey, so I guess he's bulking up again to try and be signed maybe. Marvin is better, but still slower and it's a real clash of styles before some cool spots in the second half. Davey hits a Lariat and then weirdly wins with a Brainbuster. **1/4 At ringside, Veda Scott comes out and hands Nigel a folder of legal papers. She leaves and Nigel says it's more Corino stuff, and Nigel leaves to handle it. Before the main event, Bennett comes down and hits Steen with the Piledriver. Match #3: Kevin Steen vs. Eddie Edwards At least this is really good, and has Steen's neck as a focus. Steen gets pissed when Eddie tries to give him a shot to get better and spits and slaps at him until Eddie goes at him 100%. They then work a 10 minute exchange of crazy shit, with Steen's neck holding him back. Steen's neck/shoulder area gives out when he tries the pick up for the Package Piledriver, and Eddie gets a roll up for the win. **3/4 |

ROH World Champion: Adam Cole, Since 9/20/2013 ROH World Tag Team Champions: reDRagon, Since 8/17/2013 ROH World Television Champion: Matt Taven, Since 3/2/2013 ![]() ROH GLORY BY HONOR XII OCTOBER 26TH, 2013 THE FRONTIER FIELDHOUSE CHICAGO RIDGE, IL Match #1: Mark Briscoe vs. Silas Young This is another one of those Silas Young matches. Very very good, but it's just missing something and isn't quite great. I feel bad for Silas, because he now has a great character and is super solid, but something just doesn't click for him outside of the magical venue in Milwaukee. Mark misses the Froggy Bow, and Silas gets a roll up using the ropes for the win. **1/2 Post-match, Mark attacks. Silas kicks him in the dick though, and then takes the referee's belt to whip Mark a lot before he leaves. Match #2: Jimmy Jacobs vs. Adam Page [Trial Series - Match #4] The out of nowhere great year continues, as Jacobs puts on another surprisingly good match. Page is good and all, but he's largely guided by the hand here. He still looks a little bit lost at points in control and they might have been better served having Jimmy work subtle veteran heel than doing back and forth, but this also might have worked in a more Southern city, because Page's more southern babyface charms aren't as well received here, in a building that's super pro-Jacobs and always has been since the I Quit match with Shelley. Still, very good, and the Contra Code gets Jimmy the win. **1/2 Match #3: Kevin Steen vs. Michael Bennett w/ Maria This is a waste of Steen, but along with the Jacobs match, this is one of the better Bennett matches ever. It's not quite great because it's not more of the sprinty thing that Jimmy did, and kind of a restrained first half and a shorter 12 minute match as the first match in a feud. There's a lot of interference and Steen kicks out of one Piledriver, but because ROH refuses to take no for answer in this push, Bennett wins with a low blow and another one. **1/2 Bennett tries another one, but Victoria/Tara comes out to save somehow. PORDIGY can't fight off Victoria. She beats up Maria, and Steen basically no sells the Piledrivers during the brawl and he gets up on the top rope and hits a flip dive onto Bennett and a lot of referees on the floor. Victoria hits Maria with the Widow's Peak in the ring. I get that she has a restaurant in Chicago now, but that was all super random. Since this is a TV taping marketed as a big show to sell some DVDs and actually get decent attendance, Steve Corino finally returns to join commentary, and they say Nigel was ordered by ROH management to find a role for Corino or risk a lawsuit they would lose. Smart move to turn an actual show into TV instead of doing a super long TV taping type show again. Match #4: Tommaso Ciampa vs. Jesse Sorensen Weird. Sorensen gets a shot to capitalize on the sympathy he's garnered both with his horrific injury and TNA's terrible treatment of him, but then kind of blows it by not being very good to remind everyone why nobody cared about him before then. He is super super average and pretty inexperienced and Ciampa wins with a Rings of Saturn, now named the Sicilian Stretch. *1/2 Match #5: Outlaw Inc. vs. Adrenaline Rush This is another pretty average one. Homicide and Kingston are clearly holding something back, as they just sort of do generic roughhouse stuff without really doing the stuff they could be doing more often. The upsetting part is that it's in no way bad at all, but it's just half speed from two guys who could be awesome if not for everything ROH is doing with them. ACH has a good hot tag, and then TD gets back in and gets beaten with the Doomsday Bulldog. **1/2 Post-match, Kingston gets on the mic and says reDRagon are pussies for not fighting them. Match #6: Roderick Strong vs. Paul London Awesome match. London again looks like the best wrestler on the card so far, and works perfectly with the go-go-go style of babyface Roddy. They escalate things very very well despite there not really being any kind of real story behind dudes doing a lot of cool stuff. Roddy debuts the Half Nelson Backbreaker on the apron, and London dives and flips around a lot. London does the cat skinning style headscissors to the floor, BUT DROPS DOWN WITH IT INTO A TOMBSTONE JESUS CHRIST. London rolls him back in and hits the London Star Press to win. *** Match #7: Adam Cole/Matt Taven/reDRagon w/ The House of Truth vs. Michael Elgin/Jay Lethal/Caprice Coleman/Cedric Alexander [CHAMPIONS VS. ALL STARS ELIMINATION MATCH] This goes 71 minutes, which is INSANELY overzealous for these four. The best of these dudes usually max out at 25. This has some loose story type stuff where both Elgin and Lethal want to pin Cole to get a World Title shot, and all the heels are kind of cowards, but not nearly as much going on angle wise as the one like this in 2011. Delirious got out-booked by Jim Cornette, in a rarity. This is a lot like the 2011 match though in that the Tag Team Champions drag it down a lot when they're in, and it's surprisingly well laid out. KYLE AND COLE TEAM UP AGAIN, AND IT'S LIKE 10,000,000 TIMES BETTER THAN ANYTHING REDDRAGON DOES! Fish is appropriately mad. Elgin has a really good hot tag like 20-25 minutes in, AND THERE'S A BIG ASS DIVE TRAIN! Fish actually rams someone into the railing so that Kyle's Missile Dropkick off the apron isn't super contrived for once. Outlaw Inc. comes out to brawl with the champs, but that's broken up, so whatever. Cole Superkicks Cedric to eliminate him first, because this is bullshit. TAVEN SUPERKICKS LETHAL OFF THE ROPES AND DOWN THROUGH THE TIMEKEEPER'S TABLE! Coleman is kind of alone while Elgin deals with other stuff, and Cole hits the Florida Key to also get rid of him at like 39 minutes. It's basically 4 on 1 on Elgin. He gets beat up for a while, BUT MAKES A KILLER COMEBACK. INSANE POWER SPOTS. HE HITS A DEADLIFT GERMAN ON TAVEN, WITH FISH ON HIS BACK! YEAH! LARIAT ON KYLE TO ELIMINATE HIM! This is the shit Elgin should be doing, not doing even jerk off exchanges and trying to work epics. Lethal gets up selling his head and has a hot tag for a moment, BUT COLE HITS THE NORTHERN SUPERKICK! BRAINBUSTER ON THE KNEE ELIMINATES LETHAL TOO! At 51-52 minutes, Elgin is now officially alone in 3 on 1. Bobby Fish's inherent suckiness is finally exposed as he has to do stuff. Elgin counters the Climax into the Crossface for the win. I don't think dudes should do the Crossface anymore. Elgin makes another comeback, AND FINALLY GETS RID OF FISH WITH THE SPIRAL BOMB AT 58 MINUTES! The last thirteen is all Elgin vs. Cole, so that's pretty great. BUT FISH HITS ELGIN WITH A CHAIR IN REVENGE! This ends up meaning nothing as Cole doesn't really take over and they just go into a finishing run. Okay then. There's something to be said for saving stuff at the end so it's fresh, but we've now seen everyone else in the match eliminated by one of these two, so the drama on some kickouts and counters of the moves that earned eliminations is earned. Elgin hits a Super Elgin Bomb for the win. This could have stood to lose 10-20 minutes in the 30ish minute period before the first elimination, but this format AGAIN succeeds in spite of itself. I'm kind of mad that this didn't suck again. *** |

ROH World Champion: Adam Cole, Since 9/20/2013 ROH World Tag Team Champions: reDRagon, Since 8/17/2013 ROH World Television Champion: Matt Taven, Since 3/2/2013 ![]() ROH The Golden Dream November 2nd, 2013 Cincinnati, OH Nigel McGuinness comes out on the mic to open the show. He says Adam Cole was concussed last weekend in the elimination match, so his scheduled title shot vs. Kevin Steen is off the books. Luckily, Jay Briscoe was cleared to compete, and he will be stepping in. Jay Briscoe comes out with his new amazing Real World Title belt, which is a belt with skulls and Confederate flags and shit with a camouflage strap. He says he heard Michael Elgin is getting the title shot at Final Battle and not him, and asks why the fuck that is. Nigel says Elgin earned a shot last weekend and says while Adam Cole is here tonight, if he touches him while he's injured, he's going to have to fine him. Michael Elgin comes out and he says it's okay, and after he took Adam Cole's title in a month and a half, he'd come back and take Jay's too. Kevin Steen comeso ut and says he gets why Jay is angry, but HE'S the one who got screwed tonight. He says Final Battle is his show after he's stolen it the past four years. Nigel says they all have a valid point, and the winner of Briscoe/Steen tonight will go in the title match as well for ta three way. Match #1: Bobby Fish vs. Mike Posey Both tag partners are there again, as ROH again books Alabama Attitude. Bobby Fish is left to his own devices here, and of course, this is fucking trash. Posey isn't good enough or important enough for him to reign in Bobby. So, Bobby does a lot of boring leg work that leads absolutely nowhere and is sort of sold and then wins with some shitty head kicks. 3/4* Match #2: Kyle O'Reilly vs. Corey Hollis This is better. Corey is pretty generic, but he's a blank slate and Kyle doesn't try and do anything super complicated, and looks like an actual good wrestler for once. Of course, we know this is all a sham, but it's a reminder that he's a guy who COULD be awesome if he was smarter or something. Decent finishing run, and Kyle wins with a Triangle Choke. ** Match #3: Michael Elgin vs. Silas Young This was really good, but not great like their 2012 match in Milwaukee. It's really solid though, and Silas works better with Elgin than anyone else he's fought since he became a full-time guy. They do some really good stuff and Elgin obviously does his buckle bobm and then the Spiral Bomb for the win. **3/4 Match #4: Davey Richards vs. ACH This was a weird one. Davey basically just poor ACH alive for 20 minutes. He dominates with some really shitty rib work for like 10-15 minutes, and then ACH comes back. This is really good stuff with his crazy dive and quality offense. He no sells the rib work, exposing a flaw finally after a year of being really well presented and protected. God damnit, Davey. Davey then comes back, and without using any of the big match moves he's used for the last 3-4 years, he just beats ACH with a Flying Double Stomp, making him look like a total jobber. Fucking hell. **1/2 Match #5: Matt Taven [c] w/ The House of Truth vs. Adam Page [ROH World Television Championship] On commentary, they say that Truth realized Taven performs best in title matches where he has to win, so they just made every match of his into a title match so he'd win more often. It's really stupid, but it's kind of genius in how it sort of makes fun of the coward heel champion deal. Kelly asks Scarlett to cover herself up, because he hates fun. This goes like 13 minutes, and they waste 5 minutes with generic opening match stuff and stalling, because Taven SUCKS at using time right. Cool finishing run at least, and Taven wins with the Climax. **1/4 Match #6: Jimmy Jacobs w/ BJ Whitmer vs. Roderick Strong [Trial Series - Match #5] If Jimmy wins, he gets a title shot and his job back guaranteed. BJ is on commentary. This is obviously really great, since they get time and these dudes rarely have bad matches, especially with Roddy not working heel. Veda Scott comes out to watch, and BJ said she's trying to stir up trouble and she asks to speak with him when he's done here. Roddy control well enough, and Jimmy comes back and there's a killer finishing run. Lots of awesome awesome counters, and Jimmy avoids the top turnbuckle backbreaker, AND HITS THE SUPER CONTRA CODE TO WIN THE TITLE SHOT AND A JOB! YEAH! *** Match #7: Jay Lethal vs. Mark Briscoe vs. Tommaso Ciampa [TV Title #1 Contender's Match] This is very much a match that happens. It's not bad or anything, but it's just this generic ass three way. Matt Taven comes out to do commentary. There's some cool stuff, but it never really develops into anything more than a parade of spots. Taven and Lethal end up getting into a brawl on the floor, and Tommaso vs. Mark is good. Tommaso gets kind of an upset win with the Project Ciampa, given that he's been given nothing to really do in the last few months. **3/4 Post-match, Lethal and Ciampa run Taven off. Adam Cole comes out to ringside to do commentary on the main event. Match #8: Kevin Steen vs. Jay Briscoe [#1.5 Contender's Match] This isn't as good as the title switch because it's Jay's first match back, so he's a little rusty and it's also only like 13 minutes. They basically just do a bunch of stuff, and this is the kind of thing that REALLY needs a lively and energetic crowd to make it work, because dudes trading huge stuff to total silence is just kind of sad. Maria comes out to pull the ref out after Steen has it won, and then Jay recovers and hits two Jay Drillers for the win. Jay's devaluing of the Jay Driller for cheap pops in 2013 is depressing. **3/4 Adam Cole attacks Jay post-match. Michael Elgin comes out to save, but he winds up fighting Jay as Cole sneaks off. |

ROH World Champion: Adam Cole, Since 9/20/2013 ROH World Tag Team Champions: reDRagon, Since 8/17/2013 ROH World Television Champion: Matt Taven, Since 3/2/2013 ![]() ROH Pursuit Night 1 November 15th, 2013 Dearborn, MI Jay Briscoe comes out to open the show with the Real World Title and says this show ain't got a REAL title match, since Cole's belt don't mean shit, and issues an open challenge. Silas Young comes out and says he wants to beat the other Briscoe. Match #1: Jay Briscoe [c] vs. Silas Young [Real World Championship] This is like three minutes, so whatever. They have a good fight, and Silas goes to try and use the ring bell hammer, but Mark Briscoe runs out to take it away from him, and Jay hits the Jay Driller when he turns around for the win. *1/2 Match #2: Bobby Fish vs. Cedric Alexander vs. Tadarius Thomas Despite Fish, Cedric and Tadarius do their best. Cedric hits a young AJ Styles level dropkick in this. TD reverts back to sort of just doing some things, and Bobby Fish adds nothing at all to the proceedings. Cedric ends up beating Thomas with the GTS Enzuiguri/Benadryller/Detonation Kick. ** Match #3: Matt Taven [c] w/ The House of Truth vs. Zach Gowen [ROH World Television Championship] This is horrible. It's fucking 2013 guys, what the hell? We learned the lesson that Zach Gowen sucks A FUCKING DECADE AGO. It's cool and he's inspirational and all, but we learned a decade ago that a one legged wrestler is no good. This goes 11 minutes for some reason Taven needs a ton of help to beat Gowen. Dogshit. He wins with the Climax. *1/2 Match #4: Eddie Edwards vs. Jay Lethal This is a low-level great match. It's kind of a face/face jerkoff match, but Eddie Edwards is so good at these 10-15 minute back and forth matches that it's super entertaining. They escalated it well and the finishing run was super awesome. THEY HAD A TOPE SUICIDA FIGHT. NEW FAVORITE SPOT. They do some really cool counters and nearfalls. Eddie keeps having the Lethal Injection super scouted, so Jay does a new set up. He backflips out of the corner to his feet and then hits the cutter part for a Backflip Lethal Injection to win. *** RD Evans returns with Veda Scott, and RD issues an open challenge. Some local dick comes out, and Veda says he's the first victim in a long list. Match #5: RD Evans w/ Veda Scott vs. Hakim Zane Somehow, THIS gets 5 minutes. That's like double Jay/Silas, which makes no god damned sense to me. RD does some stuff and he's alright, but not great yet. He hits a Super Gutbuster for the win. *1/4 Post-match, Veda gets back on the mic and says RD Evans isn't done, and they have unfinished business, so she calls out Ciampa! Tommaso Ciampa comes out to fight him, BUT MATT TAVEN ATTACKS FROM BEHIND! HE HITS CIAMPA IN THE KNEE WITH A CRUTCH! People help Taven, but Veda counts to ten, and says RD Evans wins by count out and the streak continues. Match #6: Kyle O'Reilly vs. ACH vs. Caprice Coleman This one is better, but still sort of just a match and is only slightly better. A lot of middling stuff and then they do some things. Nothing REALLY happens at all, and it's just a lot of barely connected and average spots. You get a real sense that all three are sort of handcuffed here, because ACH vs. Kyle would probably be an insane nearfall festival if they let them do what they wanted. Coleman beats Kyle with a running Snapmare Driver. ** Match #7: Michael Elgin vs. Mark Briscoe This was a MASSIVE let down, because it's only nine minutes and more of an angle than a match. They kill a lot of time in the first half, and then just do a bunch of stuff in the second half without really building to it at all. Just kind of a switch and then "WELP HIGHSPOT TIME". Silas Young comes out to attack Mark on the floor, and Jay comes out to save, and then also fights Elgin. The match is then thrown out. *3/4 Match #8: Roderick Strong vs. Davey Richards w/ Eddie Edwards This winds up being Davey's final singles match in ROH. They have 14 minutes instead of like 30, so this SHOULD be their best match since their 2008 ones, but NOPE, because true to form, they just do a bunch of shit. It's middling and super mediocre at the start, but then they turn it up all of a sudden. They also offer nothing new, and it's like a shortened greatest hits deal, except that their "greatest" hits kinda fucking blow. After a bunch of head kicks and impact things, Roddy wins with an inside cradle. I'm glad this was Davey's last singles match, so he can leave with me remembering how much he could really just fucking suck. *3/4 Match #9: Adam Cole [c] vs. Jimmy Jacobs w/ BJ Whitmer [ROH World Championship] This isn't as good as their January match, because this is sort of just a lot of stuff. It's good stuff, but it lacks the real escalation of their January match and that something special that had, because Cole is infinitely better in-ring as a babyface, and Jacobs is a little bit better as a heel leading the match. Awesome finishing run though, as Jacobs brought a lot of great character stuff when he refused to use the belt when the referee was down, again proving himself as a man of honor. Lots of big kickouts and it generally worked well to get it over as a big deal, but it's probably a bad tone that Cole will follow the rest of his run. Cole wins with the Panama Sunrise/Florida Destroyer. *** |

ROH World Champion: Adam Cole, Since 9/20/2013 ROH World Tag Team Champions: reDRagon, Since 8/17/2013 ROH World Television Champion: Matt Taven, Since 3/2/2013 ROH Wrestling December 7th, 2013 Columbus, OH These matches are from Pursuit Night One, which is the only 2013 show I haven't been able to find in any form. Match #1: The American Wolves vs. Outlaw Inc. This was pretty great, and this is Davey's actual last match. Eddie works super well with Homicide again, and this is the first time it feels like Kingston and Homicide really get to let loose. reDRagon come out to watch, since I guess that match is happening at Final Battle or something. Final Battle promotion is TERRIBLE this year, and for the first time since it became an iPPV. Outlaws surprisingly win clean, as they hit the Doomsday Bulldog on Davey for the win. *** In a pretape, Matt Taven cuts a promo. He says Tommaso Ciampa isn't even a real psychopath, and he's facing some loser with a mohawk and a bum wheel. He says he's the best TV Champion in the history of wrestling AND television, and this match is going to cement that and be a celebration of Hoopla. A hype video airs for Steen/Bennett. Match #2: Michael Elgin vs. Roderick Strong vs. Jay Lethal vs. Matt Taven w/ The House of Truth This is totally just a spot/movefest, but it's only 13 minutes, so they have MUCH less time to kill. They highlight the Taven/Lethal feud a little bit, and then the other three are there for the big ass finishing run. There's some botching, so this isn't quite great, but is very very good. Elgin beats Strong again after the buckle bomb and then the Spiral Bomb, so he looks strong going into a title shot everyone knows he won't win. **3/4 In a pretape, Adam Cole says it makes him upset that people think both his opponents at Final Battle are "real" or "uncrowned" World Champions, but there's only one. He says he's going to prove it, and his mentor is coming to New York City to watch. In the ring, Steve Corino brings out Jay Briscoe for an interview. He starts in on Jay and says his belt is cool and all, but asks if he knows that he's not REALLY a champion. Jay gets mad, but Silas Young comes in to attack from behind! Mark Briscoe runs out with a strap to fight him. They get pulled apart, and Adam Cole comes out to attack. Michael Elgin makes the save, but then Jay shoves him. They fight, and Elgin goes for the bomb, but Cole hits him in the back with the belt. Cole then lays Jay out with one to the face and holds up both belts to end the show. |

ROH World Champion: Adam Cole, Since 9/20/2013 ROH World Tag Team Champions: reDRagon, Since 8/17/2013 ROH World Television Champion: Matt Taven, Since 3/2/2013 ROH Wrestling December 14th, 2013 Columbus, OH Match #1: Silas Young vs. Tadarius Thomas This is alright. Silas does stuff and it's basically a showcase for him. This is fine, because he has midcard potential, and Thomas is still very much an empty vessel that got carried by ACH all year. Silas wins with the Silas Young Moonsault, so he at least has a decent win to recover from Jay squashing him. ** Match #2: Adam Cole vs. ACH This is really good, and ACH at least looks good, but it's basically a showcase match for Cole going into the Final Battle show that happens on this same night. ROH switched to VOD only for the most part in fall 2013, so this show is actually a real ad for Final Battle, and not a show that airs while it's already happening. Cole still isn't very good at working heel but he does knee work here. ACH sells it alright, and Cole eventually wins with the Figure Four. **3/4 Match #3: reDRagon [c] vs. Caprice Coleman/Cedric Alexander [ROH World Tag Team Championship] This felt like this was the match that should have been at Final Battle, since Outlaw Inc. aren't really super over and this rivalry has gotten a lot more build throughout the year. Cedric is awesome in this both as a hot tag and as the dude driving the opening attack. The champs isolate Caprice and work on his arm. It's the best control segment they've done in a while because it's actually something with focus. Coleman gets back in for stuff, and Kyle gets his knees up to block Overtime. They then attack Coleman's arm again, and beat him with Chasing the Dragon. That was one of the least shitty RD matches of the year, and actually was good. **3/4 So on the last show before Final Battle, they do zero hype for the show, and we have a decent idea of the card, but no hype for it beyond just telling us what the matches are, and there's some pretty big stuff otherwise on there that apparently only got an online focus (like Matt Hardy returning or the farewell match for Eddie Edwards). Delirious makes less mistakes than Jim Cornette and seems to have a better handle on what the ROH fans really want, but he is also so fucking boring and predictable and at least in terms of Final Battle, SUCKS at promoting a big event. Of course, in 2014, they hire better promotion people and managed to get a number of lapsed ROH fans (myself included) really hyped up for Best in the World despite that it didn't have a great card at all. |

ROH World Champion: Adam Cole, Since 9/20/2013 ROH World Tag Team Champions: reDRagon, Since 8/17/2013 ROH World Television Champion: Matt Taven, Since 3/2/2013 ![]() ROH FINAL BATTLE 2013 DECEMBER 14TH, 2013 THE HAMMERSTEEN BALLROOM NEW YORK, NY Match #1: Matt Hardy vs. Adam Page UGH. I know that in his 2014 run, Matt doesn't wrestle that often and works more in a managerial capacity like a Ric Flair to Triple H in 2002-3, but god damn, this was bad. The crowd didn't give a shit because this is obvious, and Matt didn't really try hard either, so Matt wins in like seven minutes with the Twist of Fate and whatever. *1/2 Match #2: Mark Briscoe vs. Silas Young [Strap Match] This is again shackled by the weird refusal to give undercard matches proper time, most of the time, as they only get nine minutes. That isn't really enough, especially when they work the normal strap match rules and not Country Whipping as you'd think a Briscoe match would be and like this feud warrants. Also, strap matches usually suck and they have to work hard to make this average. They do some stuff, but yeah, big whatever here. ROH didn't give this feud enough time or TV time to really develop anything interesting and Silas surprisingly wins. **1/4 Match #3: The Young Bucks vs. Adrenaline Rush THIS IS MORE LIKE IT. ACH fits in perfectly with the Young Bucks style, and since this is only 12-13 minutes, the Bucks look amazing in a short burst. This had a lot of Bucks spots being totally countered and made ACH and Thomas look really awesome for finally countering shit that's worked forever. They work on TD's shoulder and he sells really well. Some great false finishes before ACH saves BUT THE BUCKS CUT OFF HIS TOPE SUICIDA WITH A DOUBLE SUPERKICK AS HE'S IN THE AIR JESUS FUCKING CHRIST. After that, TD is still hurt and prone so they hit More Bang For Your Buck to win. It says a lot about how average 2013 has been for ROH that the Bucks can come in and have their routine match with a capable but not great team and it's a top 10 match of the year in ROH. *** Match #4: Kevin Steen vs. Michael Bennett w/ Maria [Stretcher Match - Loser Can't Use the Piledriver] Steen is Mr. Final Battle by this point, so he basically forces Bennett to have a great match. Steen basically brings back the amazing 2010-12 style Steen brawl that's sort of faded away as ROH has held him back for the last 6-9 months. So Steen destroys PORDIGY for the first third, and breaks the stretcher too, because this is a stupid match style in 2014. PORDIGY gets a low blow and does some stuff. Big finishing run, including the Box Office Smash off the apron and through a table. The stretcher is broken though, so PORDIGY can't win. Steen comes back and hits a Brainbuster onto an open chair and then the Package Piledriver. He sets up some chairs, and puts Bennett through all of them with another Package Piledriver and the referee stops it. *** Post-match, Maria slaps Steen, SO STEEN HITS HER WITH THE PACKAGE PILEDRIVER TOO WHOA! Match #5: reDRagon [c] vs. Outlaw Inc. [ROH World Tag Team Championship] This just DIES. It's heel/heel first of all, and both teams actually work heel during it at points, so the crowd is confused. Kyle makes a sort of hot tag in the middle and does highspots, but then they isolate Kingston with a lot of their usual slow and monotonous bullshit. The crowd chants "BORING" at them for the first time, although it's not like this is any worse than the usual boring ass RD control segment. Homicide has a decent hot tag, but then Eddie fucks up a dive. They clash styles really badly in the finishing run, and they get an "END THIS MATCH" chant. The champions retain with Chasing the Dragon on Homicide. *3/4 ROH basically blamed Outlaw Inc. for that, which is bullshit, because it took two teams to have a bad match there. Match #6: Matt Taven [c] w/ The House of Truth vs. Tommaso Ciampa [ROH World Television Championship] THIS RULED FOR FOUR MINUTES. TOMMASO IMMEDIATELY HITS A KILLER GERMAN AND GOES APESHIT WITH THE OLE OLE KNEES ON THE FLOOR! YEAH! The girls and Truth give some time, AND TAVEN HITS A CRAZY ASS TOPE SUICIDA WHAT THE SHIT?! Taven celebrates too long and hugs the girls, BUT CIAMPA HURLS HIM THROUGH A PIECE OF THE RAILING. AND HITS THE AIR RAID CRASH ON THE FLOOR! MORE KNEES INSIDE THE RING, AND THEN HE HITS SCARLETT WITH ONE AFTER SHE TRIES TO HIT HIM WITH THE BELT! CIAMPA NO SELLS THE BOOK OF TRUTH SHOT AND KILLS TRUTH. THE OTHER GIRL GETS HIT WITH THE PROJECT CIAMPA, AND TAVEN HITS THE SHITTY FROG SPLASH! BUT CIAMPA KICKS OUT AND ROLLS INTO THE SICILIAN STRETCH FOR THE WIN! That was like a slightly more even workrate version of Warrior/HTM, which is perfect for these two. Taven gets the end that a reign of bullshit and cheap tricks deserves and Ciampa now has momentum for the first time since he came back. **3/4 Eddie Edwards comes out for his farewell match next, and since ROH dumped Davey because of yet another undisclosed backstage incident, Eddie introduces the returning BJ Whitmer as his partner. Holy SHIT, nobody cares about that at all. It's easy to forget that BJ hasn't ever really been over in the North East as a top level guy (aside from the Jimmy Loves Lacey stuff), so this really should have been done somewhere in the Midwest. Match #7: Eddie Edwards/BJ Whitmervs. Roderick Strong/Jay Lethal This is kind of rough, and not the farewell that Eddie deserved. Not sure why they HAD to get rid of Davey then and couldn't just stomach him for one more match, but it would have been much better than BJ, who is working real gingerly. This is the point where BJ Whitmer is basically a corpse and can't really do very well anymore, at least from what I'm seeing here and his 2014 stuff. Eddie gets in for the finishing run though, and that takes this from average to very good. Eddie vs. Strong rules one last time, and Eddie gets an O'Connor Roll to block the End of Heartache for the win in a rare victory on the way out. **3/4 Post-match, Eddie gets the big farewell and gets on the mic. He puts everyone over (as Jay Lethal sort of disappears) and then thanks BJ Whitmer for filling in here one last time so he could also get his farewell, and BJ hugs him. BJ says that means a lot, BUT HIS CAREER IS JUST GETTING STARTED AND THEN RODDY AND BJ ATTACK EDDIE EDWARDS! Jimmy Jacobs comes out to join them, AND HE HUGS RODDY AND BJ! Jacobs gets on the mic and is mad that while he proved his honor and his worth, ROH couldn't find a spot for him on this show because this had to happen, and says he's seen everyone come and go and get the big farewell and asks why they cheer him for leaving, but don't appreciate the three of them for staying. He says everything always changes here but them, and The Decade remains a constant. Strong and BJ hold Eddie up, and Jimmy digs out the railroad spike and stabs Eddie to send him out, and they leave together. Not sure why Strong and BJ beat each other up here if they were planning this, but clearly foresight and long term planning isn't Delirious' strong suit. Match #8: Adam Cole [c] vs. Michael Elgin vs. Jay Briscoe [ROH World Championship] This is somewhat of a foregone conclusion, given that Cole just got the title and the chases of both challengers are really just beginning. That being said, this was GREAT. Cole was a really good coward type heel early on, trying to avoid everything. UNTIL JAY HITS A CRAZY ASS TOPE SUICIDA OUT OF NOWHERE TO COLE! Elgin and Jay then compete over killing Cole. It gets a little rough in the middle because they don't need to go 30+ here when 20ish would be fine, but it's not BAD or anything. Cole distracts the referee, AND MATT HARDY COMES OUT AND HITS JAY WITH THE TWIST OF FATE ON THE FLOOR! COLE HITS ELGIN WITH IT IN THE RING, AND MATT IS THE MENTOR. GROSS. Mark Briscoe comes out to fight Matt after a bit, and Jay joins in. ELGIN THEN POWERBOMBS COLE OVER THE TOP ONTO ALL OF THEM! It then goes from that peak to another valley as Elgin kicks out of two Jay Drillers as Jay tries to kill his finish forever. Jay tries a third after Cole hits Elgin with a Northern Superkick, but then Cole Superkicks Jay and schoolboys Elgin with the tights to win. This is almost 34 minutes, and if it was almost 24, it might be MOTY level. *** Post-match, Cole hits both Jay and Mark with the title. Elgin blocks a shot, but then Matt Hardy gets a low blow from behind and he hits the Twist of Fate. They hug, BUT "CHRIS IS AWESOME" PLAYS, AND CHRIS HERO COMES FROM THE CROWD! ROLLING ELBOW ON MATT! HE HITS A BOOT ON COLE AND PULLS OUT THE GOLDEN ELBOW PAD! ROLLING ELBOW ON COLE! Hero celebrates over everyone to end the show in one of the biggest ovations in the post-Steen as champion era. So naturally, nothing came of this. Although this isn't totally ROH's fault, as Chris Hero gave way to Chris Gyro some time in the late spring/early summer. As usual, the last TVs of the year are recaps, so we're done here. |

WRESTLER OF THE YEAR: 2002: Low Ki 2003: Samoa Joe 2004: CM Punk 2005: Samoa Joe (2) 2006: Matt Sydal 2007: Claudio Castagnoli 2008: Jimmy Jacobs 2009: Kevin Steen 2010: Chris Hero 2011: Mark Briscoe 2012: Kevin Steen (2) This is the least pleased I've ever been about an ROH WOTY winner. If you paid attention and had a decent memory while reading this, you noticed that in the first half of the year, Jimmy Jacobs was on fire. Dropping *** matches on pretty much every show where he wasn't handcuffed by booking, he had a strong lead through like August, but he got kneecapped by having to take 2-3 months off after the SCUM blowoff. He rallied at the end, but he wasn't booked on Final Battle, so he was held back at the finish line. Similarly, Kevin Steen had a lead at a point too, but then got shuffled into a feud with both SCUM AND Michael Bennett at points, and STILL probably could have won this if he wasn't held off the mid-November shows too. Therefore, this goes to the third best guy, basically. He was fairly consistent with a lot of lower level great matches, but 2013 is when a lot of his flaws began to get more exposed as he tried to work increasingly more bloated ROH fan type pandering epics to try and get over to a World Title level. He's still very good, sometimes great, but he probably shouldn't have won WOTY here. Your winner. ![]() 1. MICHAEL ELGIN - 77 POINTS 2. Kevin Steen 74 3. Jimmy Jacobs 73 4. Jay Lethal 73 5.
