Because of the war, the world is seperated into zones based on nuclear contamination. Radiation fallout has rendered entire countries uninhabitable. The contamination has been mapped by the HUF and Keman independantly, but their maps are almost identical. A red zone is just ashes, with not only radiation but damage from explosives. Red zones are where the vampires and Keman evolved. Yellow is mid way, and a Green zone is a recovered zone, where habiation is safe.

Yellow zones can be lived in but over the years effects do appear. America is mostly yellow, having lost its power when the war erupted. Red zones are uninhabitable, and mostly placed where the superpowers used to be. Green zones are mostly places not worth bombing; deserts, large sections of Africa, places you wouldn't want to live. The Earth has become a living hell, caught between radiation, multiple dominating species and nobody trying to make it better.
