"Who, me?" Jelal asked innocently as Orion came on the topic of his being there. It was an honest question he supposed, and it was a very, very nice day outside. Of course many beasts were not out to enjoy it except to stand guard duty at the walls; frolic and fun were not two of a military fort's favorite activities!

He held the papers to his chest as he considered his answer. No excuse seemed to make it as far as the back of his throat before dying out. The truth of it was, he had been nervous to really show his face in front of the others so soon after his arrival. He had only just got here, and while his entrance had been impressive enough, he did not think he was truly cut out for this kind of life. But he had nowhere else to go, nobeast else to turn to. So he was determined to throw himself into this new existence with a will, and see where it took him.

But he wasn't going to say any of that out loud. He was supposed to be a stoic soldier after all.

"Well... I wasn't about to embarrass myself," he offered. "To be sure, most of the creatures I've seen 'ere r' experienced fightin' beasts! Had to make sure I was up to snuff before I went an' got my rudder smacked around by 'em!" He grinned to make the whole illusion complete. It was partially true after all, he had no interest in getting publicly humiliated by veterans who had been training their whole lives, compared to the "casual" fighting that Jelal had done throughout his own seasons.

"An' it's a pleasure to meetcha, sir Fulcry, but if you don't mind my sayin' so, it doesn't seem like you were headin' out for a picnic yourself," he remarked, gesturing to the papers that remained in a disorganized clump on the floor.

"Were these to be for letters, or maps? I'm good with maps."

OOC: Eep! Sorry for taking so long. >.>
