Juno, unfortunately, was on duty. Marching across the wide expanse of grass toward the South Wall, the hare muttered mutinous warnings under her breath at the innocent trees and vegetable gardens that got in her way. A lovely day like this, with the crisp tang of autumn moss and last night's rain melding in the grass, the delicious smells of lunch wafting around her whiskers and Roe's face when Juno had asked who was on duty today. She was sure the otter had been laughing at her secretly as Juno had wailed in disgust at the thought of being on watch without lunch. Roe had promised to bring her something edible after everyone else was finished. Juno had eyed Enamel, Torsten and the numerous other hares piling into the hall along with every other hungry, happy Fortbeast, and strongly doubted there would be any food left. And what had Roe said? 'Don't worry, I'm sure there'll be some salad left.' Salad! Salad for a hard-working hare like Juno! Salad! The indignity of it. Did Roe think she was dieting? Struck by another thought, Juno glanced down at her blue jerkin. She patted it self-consciously, then glanced around to make sure there were no beasts watching. No. No extra weight, as far as she could tell. Hah. Salad. Well, Roe knew what she could do with her 'salad'. With a sigh, Juno leaned her spear against the wall parapet, propping it up so it looked as if she were standing at attention, facing away from the fort and over to the land beyond. She stood stiffly next to it, apparently folding her paws in front of herself. Cautiously, she reached one paw into her pocket, and pulled out two small pieces of oatbread. She needed to get bigger pockets. About to sink her eager teeth into the first piece of bread, the hare paused. What was that peculiar noise? She glanced around swiftly; oh, drat it. There was someone in the tower. Of course Roe wouldn't have put her on watch alone. Now she'd have to share. Heaving another dramatic sigh, Juno shoved the bread back into her pocket, picked up her spear and headed along the walltop to the tower. Inside, she paused to ransack Enamel's bed for any sign of food; either the young hare had eaten it all or Roe had been through before her. Nothing. Climbing the ladder to the trapdoor, the hare pushed it open and clambered onto the very top platform of the tower. Oh, it was that hare chap. Teltoli, that was it. Well, at least he was decently good looking, even if she'd hardly had a chance to talk to him. They always seemed to be on different shifts. "I say, you're up here as well, wot. Did Roe tell you she'd bring you some salad too, or are you going to starve as well as me?" Juno tossed one piece of bread to the other hare and hoped that he didn't notice it was the (very slightly) smaller piece. She took a bite, without waiting for him to reply, and added, "You knew Roe several years ago, wot? Down at that bally other Fort? Ruddler. Did she starve you there too?" |
