Orion wasn't making any sort of progress. Whatever kind of trail Enamel might have left was well washed away by that time. The small group had hardly gone more than a hundred paces from the inn, and already Orion was contemplating just turning around. There just wasn't going to be any kind of trail to find. Drawing out the inevitable, he plodded forwards through the mud, the two woodlanders from the inn following grimly behind. Rounding the bend in the path that carried the inn from view, Orion felt his pulse quicken. There, in the center of the path, was an unnatural dip in the mud. Crouching down, he began inspecting it carefully. It was little more than a minor malformation in the surface of the earth, but somebeast clearly made it. "What'd you find?" came an anxious voice from behind him. Realizing he should probably share his revelation with the two with him, he turned around. "I believe Corporal Pardon passed by here on his way to the inn." The hedgehog and the other woodlander, another squirrel, peered excitedly at the spot in the path. Unbeknownst to the three, it was the exact spot where Enamel had fallen and lain for a time, leading to a very large indentation that the rain had failed to wash completely away. "Looks like we're on the right track," the other squirrel whispered enthusiastically. |
