His first few days as a member of the South Tower Guard had been fairly uneventful, and Jacob had found more than enough time to make himself familiar with the layout of Black Arch Fort's grounds and buildings. He had never spent any great amount of time inside structures of any sort, though given that he had been born into a nomadic holt and his own travels had never taken him anywhere near Redwall, it would have been strange if he had. The otter had taken in his surroundings with an eager eye, noting every room of the fort in an attempt to make it easier for himself to remember where to go at what time, and where to find certain important beasts. However, there was one place that he had not, as yet, set down his footpaws, and that was the catacombs below the fort itself. He had heard rumors, though they were probably more than rumors considering the fact that the beasts saying them would know for certain, that they eventually led down to a harbor of sorts. To water. So it was, that Jacob, his curiosity mildly peaked, started down below. |

Duran had been visiting with Warrick again, which left him, as usual, in a rather stressed and touchy mood. It was nearing the end of the day and the vole was not looking forward to facing dinner with his wife at the moment. He did not want to sit for another moment. He was a vole of action, and he dealt with stress by running or by practicing with his rapier or any other number of physical things that would get him properly exhausted and sweaty. Laurel would try to soothe him with rich food and lots of loafing about. That was how she relaxed, and he understood this. His need for a good workout when he was stressed was one of the few things she didn’t understand about him, and one he was tired of bickering about with her. So, instead of going back up the stairs after the Warrick ordeal, he began to walk down into the caverns. Tally was always encouraging members of the fort to take up swimming… perhaps he would find some solace in that today. Lost in his thoughts, the High Commander did not notice he was coming upon another beast in the tunnel until he was practically on top of the otter. “Oh! Hello there. What brings you down here today?” |

Jacob jumped slightly and a tingle rumbled down through his rudder as he whirled around in a state of mild panic that he quickly did his best to control. "I'm sorry, 'm I not supposed to be down here?" Fates! Less than a week, and he'd already inadvertently stumbled somewhere odd that he may or may not have been expected to stay away from. "I can leave now, and my apologies." A faint, but very apologetic smile twitched across his face and took a careful, slow step back towards the surface. |

Duran’s lips twitched in a smile. It was a bit of an annoyed smile, sure, but a smile all the same. Reaching up with a paw he stroked his whiskers, while his other paw reached out automatically and touched the otter on the elbow. It was a gentle but firm indication that the otter was to remain where he was. “Now, now, don’t go leaving on me. I don’t recall having met you properly yet, but your face seems a little familiar. That means only one thing—you’re new.” The vole’s smile softened slightly at this point and he withdrew his paw from the otter’s shoulder. “I’m Duran, the High Commander. Doubtlessly, we met briefly on your first arrival to the fort. It’s hard for me to keep track of all our new recruits though. Tell me your name and walk with me while? It will give me a chance to know you better, which is something I strive to do with as many as I can here. You’ll also probably benefit from a guide at the moment as well. These tunnels can get a little confusing. Have you seen the underground harbor yet?” |

"Aye, sir. Name's Jacob Scobin. And I haven't seen the harbor yet, though truth be told, I was hopin' to. Water'n all... 's good fer an otter." Jacob saluted, then faded quickly back into his normal way of existence - seemingly unfazed by most of what went on around him. He had recognized the vole's face before the introduction, even if he couldn't put a name to it. Even without the name, he had been aware that the beast who stood next to him was one of those who held power at the fort. This knowledge, in fact, had been a large part of why he had responded the way he had when first greeted. It was rather silly, now that he thought about it, but better safe than sorry. It didn't matter now, at least. There was every indication that High Commander Duran Swiftpike was every inch a reasonable, noble creature. "Might I ask if there are any plans for these tunnels, besides leading to the harbor?" |

As Jacob seemed to relax a little the vole began to lead them both farther into the caverns. The otter seemed quite polite and a well enough sort, and Duran became a little keener on getting to know him better. “There are a few ideas. For the moment the tunnels merely serve as a pathway from the supply caverns and Warrick’s forge and domain to the harbor. There are a few twists and turns that will take you elsewhere, though I suggest you do not wander down them. Members of the West Tower know the tunnels better than anyone, and it is part of their duty to watch them.” Duran paused as they came to a split in the tunnel and took the route on the left. He was not sure if Jacob was able to pick up on the implication that more than a few tunnels led outside of the fort, but he was not about to push the subject. “The harbor is what we have plans with the most at the moment. Here, it’s just around this bend. You will have to tell me what you think.” A few moments later they emerged from the dark tunnel into the famed underground harbor. And it was famed for good reason. The cavern was massive, and lit by a series of large circular mirrors strategically placed around the walls and ceiling. A few natural openings in the roof let in rays on sunlight that fell to dance on the swirling waters of the ocean that bubbled and swept against the pillars of several stone piers that had been carved from the rock. Workers and guards from the South Tower could be seen sorting supplies, tugging ropes, hauling lumber, and often breaking into spontaneous song as the construction of a decent sized ship was carried out on the far side of the harbor. A few fishing boats were drifting lazily out of the harbor and through a separate tunnel out on the water that apparently led to the open ocean. The atmosphere in the cavern was one of congenial labor and excitement. “That is the West Tower’s biggest plan at the moment,” Duran proudly announced as he gestured to the ship. As he waited for Jacob to take things in, the vole’s eyes longingly fell to the harbor waters. It had been a long day for him and he was aching for some kind of physical exertion to get his mind off matters of management and commanding and office work. For a split second he thought about shoving Jacob into the water and leaping in after him in order to go for a swim. He quickly banished the thought, however, and tried to focus on being a good commander and showing the new recruit about the harbor. |

Any mischievous look that the vole commander bestowed upon the otter were completely lost on him. It had been several seasons since he had seen a harbor with even half the potential of this one. Perhaps a river otter isn't quite as home on the sea as are his cousins, but most are hardly strangers to it. "It's beautiful, sir." The salt smell softly stung his nose as a breeze flew up from the water and played through his whiskers. "It doesn't look like you 'ave any seaworthy ships yet, though, jus' boats. Any way of knowin' when you will?" Jacob was almost smiling, or at least that was what his eyes seemed to indicate. Ship's were such pretty things. |
